  1. Who is on your all-time Mean Green Name Team: RB Hut Alred(great football name) LB Cougar McBride DT Booger Kennedy(I know it's a nickname, but it is greatness)
  2. I would also have to add: Brian Smith as a punt returner. Brock McGrew and JT Smith returning kickoffs. David Brown who played opposite Redwine in the early 90's was a great receiver as well. I would add Matt Simon as the starting Diet Coke Boy.
  3. I was torn between Silva and Blount and I couldn't, for the life of me, remember Washington's name.
  4. Who are your picks for the All-Time Mean Green team? QB - Steve Ramsay RB - Abner Haynes RB - Ray Renfro TE - Luis Silva WR - Ron Shanklin WR - John Love OL - Glen Holloway OL - Nick Zuniga OL - Philip Armour OL - OL - Felton Whitlow DE - Cedric Hardman DT - Joe Greene DT - Brandon Kennedy DE - Willis Hutson LB - Burks Washington LB - Brad Kassell LB - Cody Spencer DB - J T Smith DB - Spider Lockhart DB - Beasley Reece DB - Bill Brashier P - Toby Gowin K - Iseed Khoury
  5. We owe Greene's talents to "Old Speedy": The hard-charging possessor of 66 quarterback sacks, Greene still insists that he's a "pussycat," that his dishing out pain was an acquired skill, not the stuff of a natural-born intimidator. "All players have to learn how to be cold-blooded--an aggressive streak comes from education and motivation. He has to evolve, be cultivated." Greene's own education began with "Old Speedy," one of his Dunbar High classmates while growing up in Temple, Texas. This older boy regularly bullied Greene, humiliated him in fights, and one night, crept into Greene's house and stole $5 from his mother, Cleo. "I can still hear him say, 'Yeah, I took it. What are you going to do about it?' " recalls Greene. At the time, Cleo was struggling to take care of four children (Greene's father had abandoned the family), and she pleaded with her son to stay out of trouble. But Speedy's taunts enraged Greene, and overcoming his fear of the bully, he took matters into his own hands. "I mopped the floor with him, I gave him a really good beating," insists Greene, zealously. "That fight, when I was in the ninth grade, got me over the hump. I went from average football player to good player. I was able to find myself as a man after that fight." Brawling with football opponents became a constant for Greene, who concedes, "I guess I could've been really nasty in a losing situation." Apart from his aggressive nature, the six-foot-four Greene possessed the dedication, savvy, and raging spirit every college football coach covets. An agile pass rusher able to slash through blockers, he was scouted by numerous schools before winding up at North Texas State University in 1965. Wearing green uniforms, the football squad was dubbed the Mean Green. The team was even more ferocious during Greene's years, going 23-5-1. But Greene acquired more than a reputation for flattening quarterbacks. Attending numerous Cowboys games in nearby Dallas, he discovered a hero who would serve as a model for his future style of play. "Getting off the ball, bam, the explosive quickness and charge, that's what fascinated me about the Cowboys' Bob Lilly," marvels Greene. "This guy came at you, so quick off the snap. I tailored my whole game to be like him."
  6. You are right. I have corrected my post.
  7. I purposely left out the 97 points against Dallas Baptist because that would run away with the poll. 1. 11 sacks in one game is unreal. I don't know how any player can be that dominant in a game. Hardman did it on homecoming 1969 against Tulsa. The NCAA record for a game is listed as 5 which apparently means that sacks were not a recognized statistic by the NCAA in 1969. 2. DD is nowhere close to the total that Mitchell had. DD is 5th on the NT all-time list and he will be long gone before he approaches 122. 3. Jamario is a special player and I could have chosen any number of his records. I just think that his 6 200 yard games(NCAA record) as a freshman will be hardest to beat. 1801 yards as a freshman was a close 2nd. 4. Andy's record could be broken, but the player would have to play in every game starting his freshman year(12 games per year) and we would also have to appear in at least 2 bowl games during that span. 5. 2.6 points per game allowed is a monstor stat plain and simple.
  8. the four retired jersey numbers are. 28 - RB Abner Haynes 33 - RB Ray Renfro 75 - DT Joe Green 55 - LB Richard Gill
  9. Ding Ding Ding that's one. Two of the remaining three should be pretty easy but it's the fourth one(actually the first NT number to be retired) that is difficult.
  10. Who can name the 4 numbers that are not available(without looking at the roster first) and why.
  11. http://www.meangreensports.com/ViewArticle...0&ATCLID=119051 Sprinter Earns Sun Belt Runner Of The Week Honors The Mean Green track and field team will return to action May 7 at the UTA Invitational. DENTON (5-03-05) - Rachael Runnels was named the Sun Belt Conference Women's Track Athlete of the Week for her two gold-medal performance at the Jason's Deli Mean Green Twilight Invitational. Runnels won gold in the 4x100-meter relay and the 200-meter dash, qualifying for the NCAA Regional Meet in both events. The relay's time of 45.33 set a school record and is the 13th fastest time in the region this season and the second fastest time by a team from the Sun Belt Conference. The freshman finished the 200-meters in 23.95, the fourth fastest time in school history and the 13th best in the region. This is the first time Runnels has been selected to the honor and the third time a North Texas athlete has been named this season. The Mean Green has one final tune up meet, the UTA Invitational, before it heads to New Orleans for the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Championships. After taking the indoor crown in February, the women's team has a chance to sweep with a victory in the Crescent City.
  12. How do you post an image in your signature line ala the eagle in ipEAGLES posts? How can I make my signature green?
  13. Well, at least we will have "new helmet and uniform" talk for the next 3 1/2 months until football starts up to keep us busy.
  14. The eagle, as it looks in ipEAGLE's sig line, looks pretty decent. It looked horrible on the hat. I think the stiching makes it look pretty bad. It will pretty good on screen printed shirts etc...
  15. I am illiterate, esecially when it comes to things like photshop. Can someone please put together some helmet possibilities based on the new logos and wordmarks? Deepgreen, AustinTalon, anyone?
  16. http://www.dentonrc.com/sharedcontent/dws/....21b0cc989.html Hines, Bobo honored at UNT basketball banquet By Brett Vito / Staff Writer Junior guards Isaac Hines and Erika Bobo were named the MVPs of the North Texas men’s and women’s basketball teams on Tuesday during the teams’ annual banquet at the Gateway Center. The UNT men and women both finished 14-14 last season and lost their first games in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament with teams that featured several underclassmen. "Both of our teams are young," UNT athletic director Rick Villarreal said. "Our women are all coming back and our men are returning four or five players who started at one time or another and a great supporting cast. I am excited about where our basketball program is headed." Hines and Bobo are part of the reason for Villarreal’s optimism. Hines became the first player in UNT history to lead the team in assists, steals and rebounds, in addition to averaging 6.5 points a game. Leonard Hopkins, who was named UNT’s offensive MVP, is one of three departing seniors. Hopkins finished his career as the eighth leading scorer in school history with 1,340 points. "I am excited about next year," UNT men’s coach Johnny Jones said. "The guys are already all up early working out to get ready for next season." Bobo earned her MVP honor after a breakout season that saw her average 13.0 points a game and reach double figures in all but four contests. Bobo will head a veteran team next season. UNT returns all but one player from a team that finished one game behind Sun Belt West Division champion Louisiana-Lafayette and lost to Middle Tennessee in overtime in the conference tournament. MT went on to win the tournament title. "We are excited about next year," UNT women’s coach Tina Slinker said. "Most years you are ready for a break after the season. I am ready to get started with what we have coming back." Rike to interview at Tulane North Texas associate head coach Fred Rike will interview next week for a position as an assistant coach at Tulane. Dave Dickerson was introduced as the Green Wave’s new head coach on April 1. "Tulane has a great reputation and coach Dickerson won a national championship at Maryland," Rike said. "I am familiar with Tulane from my days at Memphis and have always had success recruiting in New Orleans." Rike has played a key role in UNT’s gradual rise under head coach Johnny Jones and recruited several of the Mean Green’s junior college players over the last four seasons. He is the second UNT assistant to interview for an assistant coaching job with another program this spring. Kobie Baker interviewed with Alabama a few weeks ago, but was not offered the job. Women MVP – Erika Bobo Most improved – Erica Howard Top rebounder – Talicia Sanders Offensive MVP – Erika Bobo Defensive MVP – Mian Williams Hustle award – Natalie Mireles Men MVP – Isaac Hines Top 3-point shooter – Calvin Watson Best field goal percentage – Justin Barnett Academic award – Marqus Mitchell Defensive MVP – Jeffrey Simpson Offensive MVP – Leonard Hopkins Hustle award – Michael Jones
  17. To me, what we, the fans and alumni, hear opposing fans call us by adding a certain letter to the beginning of UNT(i.e. a name for a part of the female anatomy) is not so much the issue. It is the fact that our female athletes have to hear it. To me, that certain word is among the most offensive in the English language and I'm a man. I can only imagne what it is like for one of our female athletes to have to hear it. If you don't think it happens, ask a softball, soccer or track, athlete and they will tell you.
  18. If gas prices continue to go up, then it will be much more expensive to travel to Los Angeles to watch Southern Cal(SC) play this next season. It will not, however, be very expensive for RV to drive to Fort Worth to laugh at any TCU offer.

  20. http://www.meangreensports.com/ViewArticle...0&ATCLID=115453 Track's Williams Runs Nation's Third Fastest 400-Hurdles Senior Kory Williams qualified for his first NCAA Regional Meet by running a 51.13 in the 400-hurdles. Arlington, TX (04-02-05) - Mean Green sprinter Kory Williams ran the nation's third fastest time in the 400-meter hurdles, qualifying for the NCAA Regional Meet at the Arlington Invitational on Saturday. The senior ran a 51.13, the second fastest finish in North Texas history and the top mark in the Sun Belt this season. This will be Williams' first trip to the regional meet. "It was an unbelievable day for Kory and North Texas track and field," said Mean Green head track coach Rick Watkins."Kory has worked really hard throughout his entire career and he has put it all together this season." The men's 4x100-meter relay also qualified for the regional meet with a second place finish. The team of David Schwein, Derek Logan, Brandon Irabor and Ryan Roberson finished in 40.63, the 16th fastest time in the country and tops in the Sun Belt. Jessica Henderson set the school record in the hammer throw and recorded the second best discus throw in North Texas history. The senior's hammer throw of 143-09 (43.81m) earned her a fifth place finish. Henderson's discus toss of 146-07 (44.68m) was good for third place, and is the best throw in the conference this year by just under 10 feet. The two-time regional qualifier already owns the school record for the discus and the indoor 20-pound weight throw. Rachel Runnels and Chi Chi Echebelem each achieved the fastest 200-meter times in the Sun Belt this season. Runnels and Echebelem finished back-to-back in eighth and ninth place and in times of 24.49 and 24.50 respectably. Both finishes are three tenths of a second faster than the conference's previous top time. Deidra Wesley and Ryan Hill also set the conference's top mark in the high jump. The pair tied for fourth place with a leap of 5-05.75 (1.67m). For the second straight meet, the Mean Green competed against world-record holder Jeremy Wariner. Running as an independent in the Arlington Invitational, Wariner ran the fourth fastest 200-meters in the world this year with a time of 20.52. The Mean Green will return to action on Thursday, April 7 at the Texas Relays in Austin.

The Mean Green shot a final round of 306 and had two of the top three individual finishers to win its second tournament of the season. “This was a really good tournament for us. The girls are really starting to understand everything and things are starting to come together for us,” said North Texas head coach Cindi Padgett. “I’m really proud of the way the girls continued to battle and it’s a nice way to go into the break with a win”. Freshman Lauren Cheves finished tied for second place with a three round score of 233. The second place finish is the best of the season for Cheves and marks the fourth top-five finish of the year for Cheves.
