Sad to report that our good friend @EagleMBA has passed away. He joined Gomeangreen back in 2002 and was a valuable contributor to the community here for many years. He was also at every game and was a frequent visitor at @KingDL1 tailgates. He has a good sense of humor was always very generous at the tailgate offering his extra tickets at no cost to people that were in need.

As major college football returns to normal in 2021, one of the lingering effects of the pandemic season will be the return of hundreds of extra, older players who choose to stick around for another year. With spring practice approaching, more than 1,000 scholarship players are expected to take advantage of the NCAA’s eligibility mulligan, according to an Associated Press review of rosters provided by 129 schools. The number of these super seniors on each team is subject to change and likely to go down as players continue to assess the value of an playing extra year of college football, but their presence is likely to have a major impact on the 2021 season. ESPN’s SP+ power rankings use returning production (everything from yards and points scored to tackles and interceptions) to project how teams will do in the coming season. Bill Connelly, who created SP+, said there will be more returning production across college football in 2021 than in any year since he started tracking it in 2014. Connelly said on The AP Top 25 College Football Podcast the typical national average for returning production among FBS teams is about 62% per team. As rosters continue to come together, with transfers still finding homes for next season, the national average for returning production has already topped 70% per team. “Everybody’s like eight to 10 (percentage points) higher because they’re returning more seniors, because all the seniors got a chance at an extra year of eligibility,” Connelly said. CONFERENCE USA Charlotte – 8. Florida Atlantic – 18. Notable: CB Zyon Gilbert. Florida International – 14. Louisiana Tech – 10. Marshall – 15. Notable: all-C-USA TE Xavier Gaines. Middle Tennessee State – 12. Notable: S Reed Blankenship, 309 career tackles. North Texas – 6. Old Dominion – 8. Rice – 5. Southern Mississippi – 15. UAB – 12. Notable: All-C-USA LB Kris Moll. UTEP – n/a. Total: 123. read more: https://www.denverpost.com/2021/02/28/college-football-super-seniors/

Scouting the Mean Green The lone league losses for North Texas have been at UTEP (62-52) on January 16 and at Louisiana Tech on February 5 (60-55). Quincy Noble leads the Mean Green with 18.7 points per game (fifth-highest in the league), while Madison Townley rips down 8.2 boards and N'Yah Boyd dishes out 3.9 assists per contest. Noble is also, far and away, the team's biggest threat from beyond the arc with 48 3-pointers made to go with her 39.3 percentage from deep. Her 3.2 triples per game are tied for the league lead, while the percentage stands second. Townley also leads C-USA in offensive rebounds per contest at 4.1. The Mean Green lead the league in 3-point percentage defense (26.0), but are 11th in the conference in 2-point percentage defense (46.8), field goal percentage defense (41.8), defensive rebounds per game (24.9) and defensive rebounding percentage (67.2). UL Lafayette also hired inside Linebacker Coach Galen Scott as Austin Armstrong left after one season to become Southern Mississippi’s defensive coordinator. Scott previously coached at the University of North Texas, and prior to that, was the Co-defensive coordinator/safeties Coach at Virginia Tech. There, the Hokies achieved a 10-win season and won the ACC Coastal Division. According to Mean Green Sports, “the Hokies defense twice was among the top-15 defenses in the country, as well as ranking within the top-10 against the pass in both seasons.” Link: https://www.thevermilion.com/sports/cajun-football-signs-31-new-players-sees-changes-in-leadership/article_0d6be6ec-76be-11eb-8ecf-cb7e48214066.html
