  1. I know that. My point is perhaps we hold off on offering and closing early in some cases. The early commit while possibly building program momentum also puts a huge target on said recruits back. It's imperative that we are very secure that we expect to hold on to an high rated recruit we land early. Here's a quote from an article I will link: “If someone can force you to make a decision, it’s very easy for another person to come in and make you change your mind about what you just did.” http://www.hookem.com/story/charlie-strong-explains-slow-approach-to-texas-recruiting/
  2. I had thought we had a good shot on this one. Good luck to him at Houston.
  3. As a follow-up to Jim's points, I wish we would study these decommits and figure out what is happening. Is it the high school coach? Is it the peer group? Is it opposing coaches who are involved? I think we can all agree it is negativity towards North Texas that is driving this. And there may not be a damn thing we can do about it. If that is the case then why even offer a high profile guy early? Would we not be better served to show interest and hold the commitment i.e. not publicize it? It seems like Charlie Strong was doing something similar to this at Texas the last couple of years. Or has twitter removed our ability to even control the recruits messaging? It seems to me that twitter has engulfed recruiting like no other medium ever. When I visit the recruiting services these days it seems like they are primarily reposting twitter posts from recruits and analyzing them. Back to strategy, I often wonder if it would not be in our best interest to stockpile our scholarships until other school options start to become more clear. I wonder if the early high profile commit is worth it unless you are very sure that they will stick. Having a recruit type out a "thanks but I want to just be friends" tweet doesn't seem to help build momentum. its an interesting question and I really hope it is being strategized and discussed at the HIGHEST levels of this program. It's far too important to just leave it up to the coaches. They need every bit of support we can muster as they try to solve this critically important rubix cube.
  4. Ernie's a Saint and very much appreciate his generosity. So glad to hear of the upgrades. Basketball is fixing to get fun again.
  5. That would be good.
  6. Losing these two stings for sure. Have to do better.
  7. It’s crazy how recruiting works sometimes and Manvel running back Deneric Prince is a perfect example of how quickly things can change for a prospect. In early April, the three-star prospect was picking up offers from programs like Southern University, Abilene Christian and North Texas. http://tamu.247sports.com/Article/Deneric-Prince-discusses-his-commitment-to-Texas-AM-53102743
  8. Not sure if our C-USA games will share the same feed technology but they have the Comey thing on twitter home page right now and it is crystal clear and good audio. Very impressive technology. Could be huge.

  10. I would also mention Kevin Galbreath. Yes he was a juco and only here two years however, he was a horse -- gaining over 1000 yards in each season and led the team to a big bowl win against Cincy - our 1st win against a I-A team since returning to I-A. That was our 1st major bowl win in the modern era and he ran for 130 yards and a 35 yard touchdown that was a back breaker. He was also a class act off and on the field.
  11. Wow -- now that's a bad typo!
  12. I found this website from the son of our former QB. Looks like he is in the fitness business. http://www.vidalcarlinfitness.com/aboutvidal/
  13. Scott Davis had some huge wins against power program schools at the time. That said, I think those teams really struggled in conference games. There are some others worth mentioning like Jordan Case, and Vidal Carlin I think this is a pretty accurate list. I believe that Derek Thompson earned his place in the UNT HOF with his senior year performance and winning the bowl game which was huge. However, you could argue there are other UNT QB's who had more prolific careers. I think if there was one on the list you could debate it would be Thompson and I would think a guy like Scott Davis might be worthy to share his spot in some particular regards. There have been many discussion and debates on NT QB's on this site over the years, here is just just one:

  15. For decades, coaches have had a huge upper hand in the recruiting process. They knew how the system worked. For the most part, the recruits and their parents had no idea. Sure, a few of the best players could dictate terms and string along the coaches, but this lopsided information dynamic allowed coaches to dictate the terms of the process to the vast majority of recruits. Recently, services such as Rivals, Scout, and 247Sports have pulled back the curtain on the recruiting process and allowed players and their parents to become educated. Still, coaches controlled one vital piece of information—whether their scholarship offer actually was an offer. Now, coaches have to put their cards on the table six weeks earlier. Some of them hate that. Most programs hand out more than 100 scholarship offers but aren’t allowed to sign more than 25 players a year. Obviously, they need to offer more than 25 players because not everyone they offer will sign. But do they need to offer 231? That’s how many players claim offers from Minnesota in the class of 2018, according to the 247Sports database. Do they need to offer 265? According to rivals.com, that’s how many class of ’18 players claim offers from Ole Miss, whose coach thinks allowing players to sign six weeks earlier is reckless. Even if we correct for the possibility that some of the players are claiming offers they don’t have—let’s estimate that number liberally at 50—it’s still an astounding number of offers. Before this recruiting cycle, coaches could watch the dominos fall through December and January and either cut loose committed players or ask them to take a grayshirt, which would require them to delay enrollment until the spring of the following year. Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh made headlines in January of ’16 for pruning his recruiting class of committed players. Alabama’s Nick Saban has made headlines in multiple years for having the grayshirt conversation with players close to National Signing Day. (Grayshirting as a practice is fine; the problem is when coaches spring the conversation on a player just before National Signing Day when the player has fewer options.) read more: https://www.si.com/college-football/2017/06/05/early-signing-period-recruiting-coaches?utm_campaign=campusrush&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_medium=social&xid=socialflow_twitter_sicr
