North Texas Will Struggle To Fly In Loaded Conference USA
Harry replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Look at even th b st offensive plays by Fine last year. Much of it was his adjustments to a line that was being penetrated extremely early. to me it's all on the oline and the 1b is Fine's QB IQ development. If he can use QB draws and quick outs to beat the rush he will aid the oline and keep the defense honest. -
Good to see indeed!

He's got a great shot. Enjoying watching him compete. Interesting they said he was concerned he was going to lose his scholarship and then excelled with two C-USA championships. Fun watching this! -
Said that he almost thought the coach at UNT was going to pull his scholarship and then proceeded to win two CUSA championships. Pretty amazing story.

It all depends on the offensive line. -

I hope you are right. If there were 7 wins which teams would they be in your opinion? I say best chances are Lamar, Rice, UTEP, UAB, UTSA, FAU and Army. -
North Texas Will Struggle To Fly In Loaded Conference USA

This has all the looks of a transitional year. And he is right, there will be some tough programs to beat in C-USA. I like to look at the eastern C-USA draw which has been a tough one for us in years past with Marshall, MUTS and WKU (2015-16). This year, with the UAB restart as a west partner, we go down to two eastern opponents, ODU and FAU. ODU is tough and FAU under Kiffen should be improved. UAB scares the hell out of me even after being shut down, cause they have that same coach and he can recruit the jucos. Tech will be strong, Rice is improving, UTSA is always a tough game, USM won't have a green QB and UTEP beat us to death last year with their ground pound. Army evidently screws the whole thing up with their veer run offense we have to prepare for. SMU has their best team period under Chad Morris and they have a nice easy schedule other than TCU. This is just a very challenging schedule for us -- no way to sugarcoat it. I would love to see 6 wins but who would they be realistically? Will we be improved - absolutely. How much is the key question. It's tough to figure how we make this win total improvement in 2017 but I remain hopeful. -
Fall practices are fast approaching, but UNT has adapted leadership and team bonding exercises this summer. Behold, “The House of Pain”: No this isn’t “Kid Nation” — although I am curious what that kid is doing on his belly, rocking back and forth like a wobbly boat. His inconsistent movements mirrored North Texas last season; one of only five other Texas FBS programs that qualified for the postseason, the Mean Green received an invitation from the Heart of Dallas Bowl on the merits of their academic standing, despite only notching five victories. The program had highs — beating Army early in the season — and also had lows — losing to Army in a 38-31 overtime in the postseason. A long history of losing — one winning season since 2004 — has perpetually sunk the Mean Green to the bottom brackets of C-USA; six other conference programs are expected to make postseason this upcoming season, according to Athlon and Sporting News national publications, respectively. read more: http://texashsfootball.com/north-texas-will-struggle-fly-loaded-conference-usa/

According to the Construction Report the remodeling of the Super Pit has started. It’s the second entry or Flag 2 and it looks like two ticket booths will be added on the east side along with some additional offices but I would think the offices would be added into the underground basement level and not on the concourse level but I could be wrong. The bathrooms are also getting refurbished. I know we have a lot of big basketball fans so I thought I would pass this exciting information along to you. I knew this was on the horizon but they started much earlier than anticipated. Have a great weekend. DRC: Report shows UNT ranked 3rd in C-USA in revenue
Harry replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
I would like to see this data broken down more specifically to show things like administrative salaries, recruiting budget, etc. I like th fact we can compare our performance against othe C-USA schools. What this doesn't show is the succcess and failures of hiring the right coaches. You can have the most financial resources and best facilities in C-USA but if you don't hire the best coaches who can recruit and win it doesn't matter. -

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Kason Martin, a 2018 quarterback from Texas powerhouse Manvel, breaks down his commitment to North Texas. Manvel High School produces as much FBS talent as almost any program in the state of Texas, and the 2018 class is no different. Kason Martin will be the trigger man for Manvel's offense this fall and has already made his college commitment. North Texas landed the 6-foot-3, 182-pounder in mid-June. "North Texas was my first offer. The whole coaching staff really felt like a family," said Martin, whose father Kirk is the head coach at Manvel. "(Special teams coordinator) coach (Marty) Biagi was the guy who was really selling me to the coaches. When (offensive coordinator) coach (Graham) Harrell sat down and watched my film, he was like, 'Why haven't we offered this guy yet?' "He told me that I reminded him of him when he was young and that just really meant a lot. I grew up watching Graham Harrell at Texas Tech and he's been my childhood idol for a really long time. I really felt like it was a really great fit." Read more: http://www.scout.com/college/football/recruiting/story/1789197-2018-qb-talks-pledge-to-unt

DENTON, Texas - Certain positions within programs can easily be overlooked or taken for granted. In some cases, that distinction falls on kickers. North Texas has one of the greatest the program has ever had, and one of the best in the country in senior Trevor Moore. The Edmond native is a perfect 99-for-99 on extra points, and holds the school record for field goal percentage (75.0%) through the first three years of his career. In total, Moore sits atop seven statistical categories in school history heading into his final season in Denton. In addition to field goal percentage in a single season as well as career and most consecutive extra points made, Moore also is the leader in extra point percentage in a single season as well as career (100%), extra points made in a single game (11 against Nicholls in 2014) and field goals made in a single game (five against SMU in 2014). "I've always been grateful for the success that I've had so far since I've been here at North Texas," Moore said. "I wouldn't be able to do it without the trust from my teammates and the coaches. Leading in seven categories is a great honor and really means a lot to me as an individual, but I wouldn't have these honors if it wasn't for the guys around me pushing me every day to be better. I know my position can help the team win games and that's what it is really all about, helping the team any way that I can." read more: http://www.edmondsun.com/sports/moore-is--for--in-extra-points-at-north/article_2fd491b8-601d-11e7-979e-8bac7e318b09.html

Why These Games Are Important Since 2005, when the NCAA ceremoniously allowed a 12th regular season game, Power 5 schools have been scheduling FCS and lower Division-I programs on a yearly basis. These contests are referred to as “guarantee games.” For instance, during the Saban era alone, Alabama has faced Kent State, North Texas, Middle Tennessee, Georgia Southern, Charleston Southern, Western Carolina, Chattanooga, Georgia State, Florida Atlantic, and San Jose State, among others, and has drawn considerable backlash for doing so, particularly for booking FCS opponents. The media will banish these programs into the categories of patsies, cupcakes, “rent-a-victims” and any major Power 5 program that schedules them can expect to be lambasted for padding their schedule with these runts of the litter. “Every time I saw Coach Saban, I thanked him. “I said, ‘Thank you so much for playing us, I really appreciate it.’ We need it to keep our programs alive and do the things we need to do to be successful. For us, it’s huge.” -- Russ Huesman, former coach at Chattanooga Oddly enough, this mind-set of the college football biosphere is the exact opposite of college basketball, as no one would want to see a March Madness ball without Cinderella. What the critics, analyzing in a silo, don’t understand is that these perceived unsexy contests benefit college football as a whole, and the trickle down effect keeps programs that desperately need the revenue afloat. I won't get in the politics of this, but if they can help us build this conference and be a good partner I would be open to it. I didn't know that much about ODU either but they have turned out to be strong. UTSA came directly in and have faired well. Rice is not in a conference with us because they feel we share in the same academic air. They did it because it was their best option to compete and build their program.

18' QB Davis Brin (Boerne Champion) - 3*
Harry replied to UNTLifer's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
Keep in mind UTSA is pretty stacked numbers wise at QB according to their roster with starter Dalton Sturm a junior returning, Jaylon Henderson a redshirt freshman 3 star from Kingwood, Manny Harris a 3 star RS freshman from Copperas Cove, Jared Johnson a senior from Grand Prairie, Bryce Rivers from San Antonio is a 3-star 2017 signee/early enrollee and their star recruit Frank Harris will be there in the Fall. This doesn't account for a couple of walk-one they have as well. If a UTSA fan wants to clarify the above please do. My point is p5's are able to double stack QB recruits but it is more difficult to do that at a G5. At some point they have to take numbers at the position into account. -
UTSA beat us at home in our first game against each other and robbed us of a C-USA championship game. We compete against them for recruits and they are in our state. That puts them in the rivalry category for me. I will grant you that we just do not have many rivals. Keep in mind recent history. We were I-AA in the Southland and I would say our biggest rival from that period was UTA who dropped football. Fast forward to now and we obviously don't want to point to any of those schools as rivals as we don't ever play them and are now FBS. After that we were independent for a year = 0 rivals. In the Belt we were the only school in the conference in Texas = 0 rivals. Sorry but our average alum has no emotion toward MUTS, ULM or Ark State. Now we are in a conference where rivalries SHOULD develop but after a promising start in 2013 we spit the bit and lost a lot of ball games. It's just very difficult to develop rivalries when you aren't winning games. SMU will always be a natural rival for us but keep in mind that has always been a one-sided rivalry as SMU feels we are beneath being considered a rival to them. Their rival in their mind is TCU. so the truth is we really don't have a rival although we finally are in a conference where IF we get our act together CONSISTENTLY we should be able to develop them. We desperately need rivals as they help build interest in the program.

A high level o-line can be developed at the C-USA level as UTEP has proven out recently. We had a good thing going with Coach Davis until he was lured away by Coach Butterteeth. numbers don't mean a damn thing if you don't have quality. the biggest challenge is tackles. Big tall long armed nasty dudes who have good wheels are in short supply. So we have to try and develop them and that is difficult to do and may explain the increased numbers at this position.
