DRC: UNT picked to finish 4th in C-USA West Division
Harry replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Man I am going to tell you this, they beat Mac like a red-headed step child 56-21 in our last game in 2014. Their coach recruited the hell out of jucos and transfers and they were one of the most talented teams we played that season in my opinion. Now they have rebuilt and believe me they put together a smart plan which maximizes their situation with the layoff. They have the same exact coach and he will have them extremely prepared. I think they are the darkhorse of the league this year. People are calling them America's team given their remarkable return from the football grave. Here is a good article to catch up on them: http://gridironnow.com/2017-uab-blazers-football-new-americas-team/ -

Andy Flusche named to Wuerffle Trophy Watchlist
Harry replied to AustinFromUNT's topic in Mean Green Football
Andy Flusche Named To Wuerffel Award Watch List Senior Defensive Lineman Recognized For Athletic, Academic, Community Achievement FORT WALTON BEACH, Florida – North Texas redshirt senior defensive lineman Andy Flusche was named to the Wuerffel Trophy preseason watch list Tuesday, the All Sports Association announced. Flusche is one of 108 student-athletes vying for the coveted award. Flusche, recently honored along with six other Texas collegiate scholar-athletes by The National Football Foundation (NFF) Gridiron Club of Dallas Chapter, boasts a 3.27 grade-point-average with numerous Dean’s List appearances and is the first North Texas football player to graduate with an allied health kinesiology degree. He is also now pursuing a degree in criminal justice. A tremendous student, the Muenster, Texas, native is also a key fixture along the Mean Green’s defensive line. Flusche played in all 13 games for North Texas last season, including the Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas Bowl. He totaled 17 tackles from his defensive end spot, and posted a season-high three stops at Rice in September in a double overtime win for the Mean Green. Throughout his career in Denton, Flusche has made 31 appearances, posting 45 total tackles and two-and-a-half sacks. In addition to his success in the classroom, as well as on the field, Flusche is also a huge part of the Denton community. He is involved with several community outreach activities through the North Texas football program. He routinely visits local elementary schools to read to students, has worked with Salvation Army and the Denton Food pantry to help provide food and other goods to those in need and captained the softball team that plays the Robson Ranch community team each spring. Flusche’s work in the classroom and off the field demonstrates what a student-athlete at North Texas truly embodies. The Wuerffel Trophy, named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the Football Bowl Subdivision player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement. Voting for the Wuerffel Trophy is performed by a National Selection Committee that includes college football television and print media, industry notables, former head coaches and prior Wuerffel Trophy recipients. Semifinalists for the award will be announced on Nov. 2 and finalists will be announced on November 22. The formal announcement of the 2017 recipient will be made at the National Football Foundation’s press conference in New York City on December 5. The Mean Green kick off the 2017 season on Saturday, Sept. 2 at home against Lamar. Season tickets are on sale now and fans can purchase tickets through the Mean Green athletics ticket office. For more information, visit meangreensports.com/tickets or call the ticket office at 940-565-2527 or 800-868-2366. -

DRC: Two UNT head coaches receive 1-year extensions
Harry replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
This concerns me because it indicates financially based decisions especially pertaining to Kee. There is NO reason we aren't more competitive in softball. She blew it and she knows it but was able to get away with it. All I can figure is we blew our wad on Litty and Mac2. -
Darrell Dickey, the lone holdover from former coach Justin Fuente's staff, will be paid $305,000 in base salary next year after making $275,000 as the Tigers' running backs coach in 2016. Last week, athletic director Tom Bowen announced that HC Mike Norvell's contract had been extended one year through 2021. A source said Norvell made the increase in salary pool for his assistants an emphasis in contract negotiations, and did not receive a raise himself. Norvell is due to make $1.86 million in base compensation in 2017, and his salary increases by $60,000 annually. read more: http://www.commercialappeal.com/story/sports/college/memphis-tigers/football/2017/05/19/memphis-football-assistants-darrell-dickey-ryan-silverfield-get-raises/333572001/

If they do not have a ticket they will not show up. Key difference. You guys are taking this down a rabbit trail I don't mean to go down. Sure I want to maximize revenue to the program. But I would like to fans sitting in the Wing more. I don't like seeing it empty in every picture I see. Have you been to the upper levels of the wing? It's hot, and a long way up pretty vertical stairs. By virtue of its temporary status in the plans, it does not open itself up to older fans who may have knee issues etc trying to get up and down. It is crying out for some type of promotion or something to help fill it up. Someday after many consecutive winning seasons maybe we won't have that problem but we do now. Why not discuss potential solutions?

North Texas #8 in DL Rankings (State of Texas)
Harry replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
I don't know if there is a better player on this years team than Finney was. Scott was not spectacular but steady. I agree with Garner but I didn't see enough from Ejiya to say he is an improvement. Wheeler is a stud and that helps ease my mind. Minor has talent he just needs to be consistent. -

Hambone and Young on the ends and English in the middle is pretty damn salty. I wouldn't say we are deep but so have a little depth IF we stay healthy. The problem is not the line, it is one of the better ones we have had IF English lives up to the hype. The problem is linebacker. We lost a LOT from last year and it is not very deep. That will be the position to keep an eye out on. -
And as we debate the pros/cons of promotions, the sands of time keep passing. I will tell you this, our good buddies down south will have Houston in for their opening game. Of course it's a better opponent and that has its advantages. But the home attendance disparity right out of the gate is going to be daunting. As a C-USA home attendance comparison for opening week (9/2/17): Rice plays neutral against Stanford in Australia -- likely a national broadcast but not an attendance factor FAU gets Navy at home so should be a decent crowd for them La. Tech gets Northwestern State in Ruston - similar scenario to ours but they have more wins. momentum Marshall gets Miami of Ohio at home. No idea. MUTS get Vandy at home. That will be a big boon for MUTS attendance. ODU gets Albany at home but as we know they sell out every game no matter who the opponent. Southern Miss gets Kentucky at home -- huge boon for Golden Eagles attendance UAB gets Alabama A&M at home but since they are brand new it will probably be a decent crowd... UTSA gets Houston as discussed above. Could be a big crowd coming off their first bowl and a Texas opponent. Eastern Kentucky at WKU -- not likely a good crowd as typical for WKU. And I close by asking @UNTFan23 respectfully -- is there not a dollar value applicable to home attendance? Does that not indirectly impact the value of the program from a marketing perspective and in terms of recruiting etc? It sure seems that it matters to some of our conference mates. If you consider our history, most would agree with me that this Lamar game has all the makings of a lower attended game on this schedule. Why would we not try to boost this through creative promotion?

North Texas had a surprisingly effective defensive line in 2016. Second year defensive coordinator Troy Reffett along with then co-coordinator Mike Ekeler took a lot of disparate parts and made them into a cohesive unit. Reffett will need to perform a similar transformation in 2017, but he has the benefit of more workable numbers this season. Inside T.J. Tauaalo moves to nose tackle full time with Kansas State transfer Bryce English getting work as well. English was a highly productive high school player out of DeSoto, but his height caused bigger schools to back off. He's a smart player who can use leverage to reestablish the line of scrimmage. In Reffett's defense the nose guard is asked to play the 0-tech, drive the center and generally occupying blockers. North Texas wants their defensive ends to set the outside edge and contain. Roderick Young started twelve games in 2016, eleven at nose, one at defensive end. He'll move outside to defensive. He possess ideal size against the run on the edge. At the other defensive end Andy Flusche came out of spring as the starter. All CUSA Freshman selection LaDarius Hamilton will push for playing time as well. Tillman Johnson is going to be part of the rotation. Johnson set a freshman record two seasons ago with 5 sacks. North Texas has options on the defensive line and a lot of guys who can play in different roles. read more: https://swcroundup.com/news/2017/7/6/position-rankings-defensive-line?utm_content=buffer1ec7c&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer
