DRC: UNT picks up commitment from JC linebacker
Harry replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Beating out other conference teams - solid conference teams -is a very good sign. -
Wow man great catch. I had forgotten about that. Koons is looking like a great hire. BTW - it looks like Nate Brown was responsible for the big lineman we landed tonight. We have to start rewarding these assistants who are landing these Key commits. Recruiting is picking up folks!!

I hear you but I want to be clear that my comments on Isadore are coming from his being a non factor this spring and from me not expecting much out of him this Fall. Today changed that - I think he's come a long way from his injury and what he looked like in the spring. I still see Fine as #1. I now think that Isadore could be a legitimate part of conversation behind Fine. My hope is we will take care of business against Lamar and give some other QB's behind Fine a chance to play. Right now there is a battle for who gets that chance. If Isadore proves worthy he has a shot. Unless Pearson just jumps out like Fine did last Fall I think you would want him to redshirt. To me the battle is now between Shanbour and Isadore for those 2nd team reps. Isadore will not beat Shanbour on knowledge of the offense and playbook. Shanbour is like a coach on the field. He will have to do it on his plays and reads on the field.

DRC: UNT's defense dominates first scrimmage of fall practice
Harry replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
You really need to redshirt every single one of your oline men and we haven't been able to do that. Guys like Jordan Murray would have benefitted so much from a redshirt year but Mac left such a damn mess we had to play him right away. So if we intend to move our program to the next level we need to load up on quality o-linemen until we have a good base to work from. I commend the staff for realizing this and implementing the plan. -
You can read a lot into these reports because they reflect what the coaches want to convey to the fans. On the other hand they can use them to motivate player who they want to see more out of.
-
Agreed you just can't have enough of them. Attrition is higher and you need quality depth.
-
I meant including the lettering photo etc. just a great overall picture don't you agree?

Offers from Memphis, Southern Miss and Tulane.

Just a friendly suggestion. -- You can page him on these types of questions by doing @Brett Vito that sends him a notification to his GMG account so he will know about your question. -
DRC: UNT's defense dominates first scrimmage of fall practice
Harry replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
We will always be limited until we can develop a long ball threat. Honestly despite them trying a few times I didn't see many signs of that today. You are absolutely correct that our oline is not able to give enough time to allow these type of plays develop. But we also need to have better routes and more precision deep passing. I truly hope that changes. -
Also have to give a shout out to the UNT graphics staff. That image of Darth Vada in the North Texas jersey is awesome and you have to think it helped in convincing him to commit.

Looks like he may have signed with Ark st out of high school but went to Holmes juco instead. Dude is pretty ripped and I like his motor in his high school video.
-
The deal is they put him in early today and he got way more reps than I expected. To me that may be the story of the scrimmage. We know that Littrell and Harrell will go with the best guy after last season so this is pretty telling to me. Perhaps this was an audition to see if he was worthy of more looks? It will be interesting to see how it plays out. Let me say this, he looked the part today. You could see why teams like TCU/Baylor etc were giving him looks. Like @AustinFromUNT said how will handle actual contact remains to be seen. This was a big step forward day for him though for sure. Thanks. The Tulane and Ohio offers are impressive. Those coaches don't mess around with idle offers. Would love to know the inside story on him and which coach landed him etc. Wonder if Ek was involved on him before he bolted and threw us a bone?
-
Thanks for the correction. I was speaking specifically of White -- I had forgotten that we added him late and he was getting a lot of reps early. He doesn't look like a late pick-up guy. We need to do some more research on him, especially coming from Georgia. Looks like we may have picked up a very nice player although he did have some drops today. Can anyone confirm his offer list or what the story was there. I remember us picking him up but could not recall the details as to why. We have had some juco's from Georgia but I don't recall a HS player we ever landed from Georgia.
-
Sorry I meant to say Hair Griffin on that it was #4.
-
Yeah he had that one wobbler to the end zone but it seemed like there might have been a whistle blown. I had to leave early so I am hoping some of the others there will fill in the blanks etc. All in all I thought it was a very productive 1st scrimmage and there is a lot to be excited about this season.
-
Yeah the jersey numbers were throwing me off today. Darden is the real deal and I heard from several insiders that he was really making a huge impression to the staff. White from Georgia is impressing them as well. He may have dropped a couple of passes in the scrimmage but his size and showings in practice are turning heads.
-
I know some have written him off after a shaky Spring and with the bum wheel. However, after seeing him garner fairly significant reps today with production I think it is a fair thing to say he may be back in the mix. Not saying he will eclipse Fine etc but they would not have given him as many of the limited reps as they did unless he was showing them something. I was impressed with him today. Big arm and decent speed. His height gives the offense a different look. Again, he was wearing a red shirt as they all were but we may have another candidate to consider.
-
I missed mentioning him in my write up but I agree 100%. There were several who caught my eye, Means looks like a man and Mayfield impressed me with his size.
-
Good to see @BeyondTheGreen doing his thing as well.

1). Fine looked good at QB and to me is showing no ill effects from the shoulder. I actually saw some nice things from Isadore today. All the QB's have red jerseys so you have to take that into account but he has a good arm and decent wheels. His height gives the inside passing game a different dimension. 1a). Next time they need to unlock the front gates. The only entry point was on the Athletic center side. No big deal but would make things easier. 2). Good to see Sam Rice there. He will be missed. Also saw former coach Chuck Mills. 3). Coach Littrell looks like he could line up and play. He is in great shape. 4). Hearing big things about White #16 the kid from Georgia. Looks the part although he dropped an easy one. 5). Deon Hair Griffin is going to help us this season. Great speed and routes. 6). Starting oline looked like Left tackle Big Jordan, guard Elex Woodworth, Creighton Barr at center, TJ Henson right guard Riley Mayfield at tackle. 7). Mayfield is a big dude but he got beat a couple times around the edge by guys like Wheeler which is no crime. Looks physically like a big time I-A tackle to me. 8). Saw a lot of Wilson and Nic Smith both lining up in the backfield. Was nice to see a lot of attention to Wilson with swing type passes and misdirection. My sense is we will see a lot of Smith and Tucker to spell Wilson this season and keep him healthy. 9). Tucker had some nice plays and may be a darkhorse to keep an eye on this season. 10). Saw one play where the had TE Kelvin Smith lining up in the backfield sort of like an H-back. 11). As far as first impressions on defense #4 Khari Muhammad made the biggest initial statement with a couple of key blow-ups against the 1st team offense. He looks like a player. 12). Jeff Wilson looks great. He had an impressive inside run on the 1st team D for about 7 yards where he showed he has some power. 13). 1st good hands award went to Deon Hair-Griffin who made a nice one handed grab. 14). Practice was very high intensity and up tempo. Loved hearing the music on the loud speakers. Another one bites the dust by queen, Tom Sawyer by Rush and some Beat box when I was listening. 15). I saw some nice things from #5 Mylam Peters from an standing end technique. Put a lot of pressure on the QB's. 16). Again, Muhammed (#4) breaks up passes very athletic. 17). 2nd team oline looks like Jalen Thomas left tackle, Gunter at guard, Mose at center, Pahinui at RG, Chandler Anthony at RT 18). Big Chum #15 had a nice curl reception while I was there. 19). #50 Hambone had a nice sack and just blowing up some linemen.. He just looks dominant out there folks. Exciting! 20) Bussey looked like he tweaked his leg on a play near the end zone but seemed fine after and walked off. 21). Kemon Hall the Itiwamba juco transfer had the biggest hit I saw while I was there. 22). Former QB Connor Means has really paid his dues in the weight room. He looks like a linebacker now. 23). Bryce English was very active and looks like he will help us a lot. That is all for now. I know there were others and I hope they will share their thoughts. Good to see @AustinFromUNT there as well as others. Good to see @SilverEagle as well.

I sure hope so!

It seems to be a young man's game right now. Look at Texas and OU and Texas Tech the list goes on. Back in the day you saw more older guys and they wouldn't think of hiring a 32 year old. Not saying Holtz is old, he's 53, but in today's world he's nearing the danger zone.

Linebacker is a big concern for me this year. I think we lack depth, and also a physical presence. We don't have a physical player like Josiah Tauaefa - but than again we aren't alone in that particular regard. It is definitely a position that we need to address in this next class. On a positive note, I do think our d-line and secondary could be solid.
