Let's be honest, UNT did not always support the program to the level they are today. They were doing just enough to be able to say they had a program and reap the positive aspects of marketing etc. I see much of this occurring during the Hurley regime. Yes a move was made to I-A but that was done on the cheap, building crappy metal bleachers to meet the attendance requirements. Other than that not much else was invested. At the time you got caught up in the move to I-A hoping it would lead to bigger things. In hindsight you realize that it was a shell game, smoke and mirrors and had little chance of much success. During the Pohl administration I think they really actually started to realize that it would take investment. You saw Gene Stallings come in and give his assessment. You saw the move to the Belt which was the best we could do and did give us access to a bowl game. You had 4 straight bowl years under Dickey which were a great step but we could not beat or compete with an out of conference opponent to save our lives. That diminished the value of those bowls in the eyes of our fans in my opinion. I do believe the bowls and success gave us just enough push to make much needed facilities a reality however and for that I am eternally grateful. Next you had the Gretchen B/Dodge years where we were able to finally get the athletic center and stadium finalized. Wow - huge step forward for UNT historically, but when compared to other similar sized programs we were just playing catch-up. I think many of us fell prey to the belief that the facilities would change the game when in reality it was something that we should have done a long time ago. Rawlins shows up and the facilities combined with our location gives us a spot in C-USA which was the best conference we had been in since Fry. I marked 2011 as the first time that UNT was really in this deal. Prior to that, our coaches were woefully underpaid and we played in a dilapidated stadium, sub-par facilities etc. We paid Mac decent money and allowed him to pay his assistants. We had a nice stadium and decent facilities. Mac looks like the guy, then has major health issues and other than a terrific 2013 season things go downhill in recruiting and on the field. But at least starting in 2011 we had a fighting shot. Fast forward to now (2017), and we have highly thought of coaches and assistants who are well compensated. We make buy-outs to get the guys like McCasland that we need. We identify issues in our facilities and set goals to get them repaired or in place. We have a very highly thought of AD who has a track record of success. So in my mind, we are well above where we were in 2011 which was the high water mark in my years of following football. We have all the pieces in place to be successful in this conference. Will it be easy? Hell no. Every school in C-USA is throwing major resources at their sports programs. Heck, UTSA just announced the matched our salary for Litrell paying Wilson $900K. But even with that being said, we are well positioned to have success in this league now versus underfunding the program in past years and hoping for the best. So in that particular regard, I do agree with Vito that there is a lot of excitement and optimism around UNT these days and for good reason.

Former SMU quarterback Ramon Flanigan is back on the Hilltop as Director of External Affairs and Former Player Relations for the program. Wherever the staff needs Flanigan's assistance, from helping cut up film to working with boosters and other spots for Chad Morris' program, SMU's all-time leader in total offense will assist with. Flanigan plans to leverage SMU's alumni and networking to assist players during and after their playing days to get the most out of their SMU degree. read more and see video: http://scout.com/college/southern-methodist/Article/A-look-behind-the-curtain-at-Ramon-Flanigans-role-at-SMU-106365443

DRC: UNT to play more man, media day notes
Harry replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Man is good but be patient. We may get burned a few times early in the season especially against some of the tougher teams. The payoff on playing solid man coverage is huge from a pass rush perspective in my opinion. -

I am extremely impressed. These are the most well thought out designs I can recall. Very pleased with these. Great job! I like the black the most -- but like all three! GMG!

The most visible symbol of Lee Jackson’s 15-year tenure as chancellor of the University of North Texas System may be its newest campus. Perched on a bluff in southernmost Dallas, UNT-Dallas’ small cluster of academic buildings reflects Jackson’s goal of making affordable, employable degrees more accessible to all North Texans. UNT-Dallas is the first public university within the city limits, and it serves students, local employers and the surrounding community. It’s one of many examples of how Jackson has quietly, skillfully and respectfully worked the machinery of local and state government to do useful things for the people of North Texas. In his four-decade career in public service, he has been a state representative and a county judge. He was named chancellor of the UNT System in 2002. In March, Jackson announced he planned to retire this year. On Thursday, UNT Regents announced the sole finalist for the next chancellor: Lesa B. Roe, acting deputy administrator of NASA. We welcome her to her new position, and wish her great success. UNT will miss Jackson’s productive combination of temperament, experience and knowledge. Born in Austin and raised in Dallas, Lee Jackson has brought the same game to every job he’s had: relentless preparation, good sense, self-control and a desire to get things done rather than to grandstand. “Lee is the best example of public service in this community,” said Dale Petroskey, president and CEO of the Dallas Regional Chamber. “The best public servants are those who can stand in the shoes of those who are opposing them, and forge some sort of compromise so that everybody can win. ...I’m going to miss him terribly at our board meetings,” read more: https://www.dallasnews.com/opinion/editorials/2017/08/17/can-name-new-unt-chancellor-impossible-replace-leadership-span-retiring-lee-jackson

Zach Orr Officially Retires a Second Time
Harry replied to MGNation92's topic in Mean Green Football
This was tough enough the first time. I send my prayers and thoughts with big Zach. Really tough break to work as hard as he did only to have the doctors say you can't play the game you love. Please, please North Texas find a way to hire this young man. He would be a wonderful ambassador for the program. -
We had this debate awhile back. I do believe most agreed that a secondary team was allowed unless they play UNT and in that case you pull for UNT or your man card is in question.

They've evidently moved up from KFC now. Looks like they are hanging with Boston Market types these days.

That actually makes me proud of C-USA.

UNT System selects sole finalist for Chancellor
Harry replied to Cerebus's topic in Mean Green Football
Right that is the Johnson Space Center but most in Houston call it NASA. On another note, I think that the head of NASA who she reports to is a political position that changes with Presidents which may explain why she came open for the job. -
Kind of sounds like longest yard movie no?

UNT System selects sole finalist for Chancellor
Harry replied to Cerebus's topic in Mean Green Football
Hey I'm all for her if she can do similar things here that Rene Khator the 1st woman chancellor at U of H has done: https://ssl.uh.edu/president/about/ Khator graduated from Purdue with her Masters + PhD from Purdue. She also spent 22 years (through 2009) at South Florida where she saw a pretty dramatic rise in athletics during that time period. In fact she was at USF when they were nationally ranked in football. On the positive side, our candidate got exposure to college athletics at her undergrad alma mater Florida which is considered a pretty pro-athletic and spirited place. I think that the undergrad school is typically where people get their athletic identity or main exposure. So hopefully she will carry some positive memories of that time and try to apply it to this situation. -

Impressive resume for sure and like the NASA connection but does she see the value in athletics? Remains to be seen.
