  1. I feel sorry for them. It is so tough for the G5 trying to compete against so much speed talent and depth. Every mistake is amplified. And to have it happen at home really stinks. You really need the p5 to make some mistakes. And most of them are well coached. Hopefully they can fight back and make this a game but it's 28-6 nearing the end of the 1st half.
  2. @Evan and @BeyondTheGreen are there.
  3. Can I hope that it is at least respectable? That is all I think anyone can ask from a pay-check game like this along with limited injuries. Some fine day we should look forward to presenting more of a concern to the p5 teams. But for now just a respectable showing ala Georgia/Florida would be very encouraging and helpful...
  4. IOWA CITY — For a little more than 20 years, what we all know now as the Air Raid offense has graced college football with its wide open, gun-slinging fun. Well, everywhere except the Big Ten, that is. College football’s unattached fans have, in large part, Mike Leach to thank for that. As an assistant at Kentucky, then predominantly at Oklahoma, the offense took hold. His years at Texas Tech made it a household name. Along the way, former players and assistants who worked for him caught the bug. One of those guys? North Texas head coach Seth Littrell, who brings his Mean Green football team to Kinnick Stadium for a 2:30 p.m. date Saturday with Iowa (ESPN2). Quarterback Mason Fine pilots the offense for North Texas now and the style with which he and the offense play offers the same challenges the Hawkeyes saw against Iowa State — and struggled with, at times. An Air Raid attack can either shrink the gap between mid-major and Power 5 conferences, or it can exacerbate it. Littrell is well aware of that. “Depending on who you’re playing, what your opponents’ strengths and weaknesses are, it can help,” Littrell said. “But it can also hurt you. It’s wide open. You’re getting after it. You’re playing fast. But if you’re playing against a good defense and not getting first downs, it doesn’t help you because your defense is on the field.” read more: http://www.thegazette.com/subject/sports/college/football/north-texas-riding-air-raid-into-kinnick-stadium-20170914
  5. This fall, 4,908 new freshmen at the University of North Texas are learning what finding the perfect fit feels like, making it clear that UNT remains a top choice for serious students seeking a Tier One education in a welcoming and diverse environment. View Full Article
  6. Like your imagination but I have a friend who is an Arkansas fan that is saying they are already prepared to offer Sumlin the moon if he every leaves TAMU. I get the feeling Sumlin will have a bigger market than Strong had after he left TU. Both are guys who can flat out recruit.
  7. In last week’s individual matchup to watch, BoilerHawk picked Akrum Wadley and Joel Lanning to keep an on eye, mostly due to Lanning’s inexperience as a linebacker and Wadley’s ability to make defenders look silly. It ended up being the perfect choice, as the Iowa halfback left Lanning in his dust on his way to the game-tying score with time running out in the fourth quarter. Luckily for the Hawkeyes, there’s another huge matchup that they should be able to exploit this coming weekend against the North Texas Mean Green. Nate Stanley has shown that he’s more than competent enough to lead the Iowa offense, while the Mean Green defense might not be able to stop anyone through the air. North Texas Defense It’s been a tale of two games for the Mean Green, as they demonstrated some defensive prowess in their Week 1 matchup against Lamar University. However, as you might expect, a lot of that might have to do with the fact that they were playing Lamar dang University of the Football Championship Subdivision*. North Texas only gave up 14 points and 266 yards of offense against the Cardinals, 180 of which came through the air on 41 attempts (4.4 yards per attempt). That’s how you stifle an offense. *It should be noted that the following week, Lamar gained about 650 yards of total offense against UT-Permian Basin, although they’re a Division II team and it really doesn’t even matter at all. It simply comes out to a lot of yards against a lower-level team, although Iowa probably would gain 250 yards of offense before running it to the short side of the field over and over until the game ended 21-0. That’s neither here nor there, however. read more: https://www.blackheartgoldpants.com/2017/9/14/16305916/iowa-football-receivers-north-texas-secondary-ihmir-smith-marsette-nick-easley-noah-fant

  12. Ferentz said a lot about the Mean Green, but didn’t say the most important thing: North Texas is the ideal tune-up opponent for the Hawkeyes. Iowa State and its spread offense exposed Iowa’s pass defense last week. The Hawkeyes need to fix it before No. 5 Penn State comes to town on Sept. 23. Finding a way to stop North Texas’ Air Raid attack is the perfect warmup for facing the Nittany Lions. “Being 2-0 is good, and it really doesn’t mean anything if we aren’t improving this week,” Ferentz said. “We won’t be playing for games that count in the conference in November.” A Big 12 team put on an offensive show, especially in the second half, against Iowa. Now one from Conference USA, which uses the most popular offense in the Big 12, will try to do the same this week. The Mean Green brings the Air Raid to Kinnick. Their average of 328 passing yards per game ranks 17th nationally. “Really, it’s unlike any we’ve seen this year,” Ferentz said. But it’s not that different from Penn State or Iowa State. North Texas wants to spread the field, push tempo and create mismatches in space. read more: https://www.landof10.com/iowa/iowa-football-pass-defense-north-texas-penn-state-news-stats-update-2017

  14. Sept. 11, 2017 THE FLATS - Four of the first five home games (Northwestern excluded) on Georgia Tech’s schedule are part of the Ramblin’ Wreck Showcase. North Texas is the third game of that event, Nov. 24 at McCamish Pavilion. This is the fifth in a series of previews of the Yellow Jackets' non-conference opponents. Location: Denton, Texas Conference: Conference USA Home arena: The Super Pit (10,500) 2016-17 Record: 8-22 overall, 2-16 in C-USA (14th), 338th in NCAA RPI Post-Season: None NCAA Postseason Appearances: Three (last 2010) All-time series record: 1-0, Georgia Tech (1997-98) Head coach: Grant McCasland (entering first season) Starters returning/lost: 2/3 Top scorer returning: A.J. Lawson (11.4) Top rebounder returning: Shane Temara (4.6) Quick preview for 2017-18 Looking to regain the program’s stride of old, first-year head coach Grant McCasland will have to capitalize on the young, raw talent currently on his roster in order to compete with the tough Conference USA. Helping lead that charge will be A.J. Lawson, who is coming of his best year collegiately and looking to up his scoring average. In the paint, the Mean Green will have to replace their leading rebounder in Jeremy Combs. Shane Temara wasn’t far behind him in the average, but could be exactly the board crasher they need with another year of experience under his belt. 15. What, you say Iowa isn’t Las Vegas? Having been to both, my reply is this: Tell me something I didn’t already know! Now, on with this week’s Fun Facts. 1. Hayden Fry was North Texas State’s coach before coming to Iowa. His record there was 40-23-3. None of the nine coaches who have followed him at North Texas had/has a career winning record there. 2. Iowa’s Nick Easley is the first player in Kirk Ferentz’s 19 seasons as head coach to catch touchdown passes in his first two games as a Hawkeye. 3. The Hawkeyes had just one more first down than North Texas when they met in Iowa City two years ago. Yet, they won by 46 points. 4. Iowa’s 44-41 overtime win at Iowa State was its first road victory under Ferentz in a game in which it trailed by double-digits in the fourth quarter. 5. North Texas is averaging 493 yards per game. That’s a bit deceptive, since the Mean Green gained 668 yards in their opening-game 59-14 win over FCS Lamar. 6. North Texas is getting $900,000 to make this trip. 7. This is the second-straight game Iowa is facing a head coach younger than 40. Iowa State’s Matt Campbell is 37. North Texas’ Seth Littrell is 39. read more: http://www.thegazette.com/subject/sports/fun-facts-north-texas-iowa-20170911
