  2. Rivalries Louisiana Tech Bulldogs Known as the Rivalry in Dixie, Southern Miss and Louisiana Tech first played in 1935 and played each season from 1946 until 1972. Today, the two schools compete as conference foes in Conference USA's West Division. Tech and USM also were conference foes in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association from 1935 to 1941. In addition, Tech and USM were both founding members of the Gulf States Conference which began play in 1948. The Bulldogs and Golden Eagles have played 11 times between 1975 and 1992. In 2008, Louisiana Tech AD-HC Derek Dooley and USM AD Richard Giannini signed a four-game contract to renew the rivalry with the first game being played in Ruston on September 25, 2010. The contract became unnecessary in 2012, when Louisiana Tech joined Southern Miss in Conference USA's West Division, which guarantees the schools will play each other every year.[39] Southern Miss–Louisiana Tech: All-Time Record Games played First meeting Last meeting USM wins USM losses Win % 47 November 28, 1935 (lost 0–27) November 25, 2016 (won 39-24) 33 15 68.8% Memphis Tigers Known as the Black and Blue Bowl, the long-standing rivalry between Southern Miss and Memphis dates back to October 26, 1935.[40] This yearly classic garnered its name from the intense competitive nature of the contest, as well as the competing schools' colors: the black of Southern Miss and the blue of Memphis. From 1995 to 2012, both teams were members of Conference USA in the Eastern Division. The two schools are located only about 110 miles from each other (Southern Miss in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and Tulane in New Orleans, Louisiana) via Interstate 10 and Interstate 59, making for a heated game. Beginning in 1979, The game was played annually until the reconfiguration of Conference USA in 2006 and is now played two out of four years as a cross-divisional conference match-up. The most recent game, a 46–30 victory by the Golden Eagles, was played in New Orleans in 2010. Southern Miss holds a 23–7 lead in the series. 3. Southern Miss has some of the most rabid fans in college football, and are frequently in Twitter conversation with this very site, on how their team is doing, our coverage of said team, and what they think we’re getting right or wrong about the Golden Eagles. This is a storied team that’s been playing football for 105 years, and up until a few recent dark years, they’ve been a southern mid-major power for decades. Their Wikipedia page lists nearly 100 USM alums who have gone on to play in the NFL, AFL, or AAFC. Coming into this game with a very different history is North Texas. The Mean Green (once known as the Eagles) have been playing football for 104 years, but have never quite had the national press or recognition as Southern Miss. While USM was playing and beating teams now in the SEC and AAC, North Texas was languishing in the Sun Belt... where they won four consecutive conference titles. And lest you think UNT’s accomplishments are less than, remember the stat-line at the top of the page: Their all-time record is 6-5 in favor of Southern Miss, after North Texas beat them last year by a touchdown. With UNT’s second-string QB. This is not to say that Southern Miss hasn’t improved or adjusted from 2016 to 2017. Quite the opposite. But North Texas has done the same and while one of these teams may have the more vocal fanbase, one team might have home field advantage, a higher-profile history, 82 more wins all-time, and Brett Favre as an alum, the match-ups between these two are FUN AS HELL. read more: https://www.underdogdynasty.com/conference-usa/2017/9/29/14588730/southern-miss-golden-eagles-north-texas-mean-green-preview-betting-line-start-time-prediction-cusa
  4. Yeah but probably not for a couple of weeks. They have La Tech and MUTS coming up before playing Charlotte which is probably their best 1st shot at a C-USA win.
  5. Sept. 29, 2017 DENTON – Sophomore Michael Lawrence utilizes a razor-sharp focus when he does what he loves. The Mean Green’s leading receiver through the first third of the season has a passion for hunting and playing football. Both require intense concentration and guile. Lawrence grew up in the small west Texas town of Sweetwater, noted for cotton fields and a bevy of windmills. Not always having a ton of entertainment options at his disposal (the nearest movie theater is in Abilene, roughly 45 minutes away), Lawrence and his friends spend a lot of time hunting. His favorite target? White-tailed deer. The slot receiver says there’s no doubt that he’s the best hunter on the team. There may be a few in the locker room that have something to say about that claim. “You’ve got to have a lot of patience in hunting,” Lawrence said. “There’s a lot of time that it takes to make sure everything is set just right. It’s a lot like practicing for football. When I’m out at the range practicing with my bow, it’s the same as running my routes. It’s about repetition and making sure I’m doing them absolutely right to perfect my craft.” Lawrence is known around the Mean Green’s facility as a technician in route running, so much so that he is nicknamed “The Standard.” He’s hauled in a team-high 16 catches for 243 yards, also a team high, after posting just one for 16 yards as a true freshman. A lot of his growth can be attributed to his relationship with fellow sophomore Mason Fine. Lawrence recalls looking up Fine on Twitter when he learned that Fine was the quarterback coming in as part of the same class. A quick commonality was discovered when Lawrence dug a bit deeper and learned that Fine also came from a small town. That immediately created a level of comfort, and Lawrence felt like the two would click, which they certainly did. Read more: http://www.meangreensports.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/092917aaa.html
  6. Just scanning this two deep -- this is a pretty young UNT team across the board folks. Also USM's interior line on both sides is pretty big.
  7. Is transfer Greg White officially redshirting?

  9. SAN ANTONIO – UTSA volleyball (3-10, 1-0 C-USA), which checked in at No. 3 in the Conference USA standings this week, will look to keep its momentum going against North Texas and UTEP this weekend. UTSA went 1-1 last week, falling to then-No. 6 Texas on Tuesday for its last non-conference matchup before rebounding with a 3-1 win against Southern Miss on Sunday in Hattiesburg, Miss. After opening conference play with a victory for the fifth consecutive season, UTSA will make its way to Denton for a 7 p.m. match on Friday at the North Texas Volleyball Center. The Roadrunners will close out the weekend back in the Convocation Center as they host UTEP in a noon matchup on Sunday. Fans can stream both matches live with a paid subscription to C-USA.tv. Last week, UTSA put up impressive numbers in the Roadrunners' 3-1 victory over Southern Miss. Senior Marijeta Runjic had a match-high 24 kills to claim her second 20-plus kill performance this season. Joining Runjic in double figures with 22 winners was Brianna McCulloch. The sophomore also added a team-best 10 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. Overall, McCulloch has recorded 218 kills (3.82 per set) and currently ranks fourth on Conference USA's kills list for the season. Runjic joins her on the list to rank sixth in conference with 195 winners (3.48 per set), Defensively, the Roadrunners are paced by Emily Ramirez with 167 digs (3.48 per set) and McCulloch with 131 (2.47 per set). Stopping opposing teams at the net is Kara Teal and Runjic. Teal has notched 37 total blocks, six of which are solo blocks, while Runjic has tallied 31 total blocks, including two solo blocks. Scouting North Texas Series: The Roadrunners currently lead the all-time series, 16-8. UTSA last defeated the Mean Green in a five-set match at the Convocation Center last season. In the conference meeting, three Roadrunners reached double figures with Runjic pacing the team with a match-high 22 kills. Mean Green Notables: North Texas is coming off a sweep against Oklahoma on Wednesday night. The midweek matchup saw senior middle Holly Milam deliver 12 kills, seven digs and a pair of block assists, to become the first person in school history to accumulate 900 kills, 600 digs and 250 blocks. Overall, North Texas is 13-2 on the season, including an 8-1 mark at home and a 1-1 record in C-USA. The Mean Green are hitting .294 as a team and has five players hitting above .300. Leading the group is Aman Chamberlain with a .495 attack percentage and 161 kills this year. The Mean Green also has four athletes with over 100 digs this season, including Henrianna Ibarra with a team-best 138. read more: http://goutsa.com/news/2017/9/28/volleyball-utsa-to-play-north-texas-utep-this-weekend.aspx
  10. Actually I heard they fired their golf coach after losing to lowly "NTSU".
  11. When is Bryce expected to be back and how long before he will make an impact? what is UNT's record or w/l percentage over the past decade on road games after a home win? Who is an unsung hero or most improved player on the OL? what will it take to get more student attendance?
  12. How in the heck does Bruce Pearl at Auburn keep his gig? Wasn't he already in trouble for items at Tenn.?
  13. This thing is HUGE but what makes me mad is that the NCAA is pretending they knew nothing about it. Read this carefully worded statement from the Emmett at the NCAA and tell me you think they are innocent on this deal: “The nature of the charges brought by the federal government are deeply disturbing. We have no tolerance whatsoever for this alleged behavior. Coaches hold a unique position of trust with student-athletes and their families and these bribery allegations, if true, suggest an extraordinary and despicable breach of that trust. We learned of these charges this morning and of course will support the ongoing criminal federal investigation.”

  17. I also thought you did a fantastic job on that and it certainly hasn't been the same since your departure.
  18. The No. 1 offense in Conference USA is not Western Kentucky. Nor is it Louisiana Tech. It’s not Middle Tennessee, UTSA or even Southern Miss. No, four weeks into the 2017 season, the leaders in the C-USA clubhouse in both yards and points per game is — that’s right, you probably didn’t guess it — North Texas. The same team, with the same quarterback, same running back and four of the same five offensive linemen, that was next-to-last in the league in scoring offense (24.8) and dead last in total offense (341.8) a year ago. After averaging 24.8 points per game in 2016, the Mean Green (2-2) have so far enjoyed a significant reversal of fortune. Under second-year coach Seth Littrell, the former offensive coordinator for Larry Fedora at North Carolina, North Texas has a 37.8 scoring average in four games and is gaining 503.5 yards per game over the same span. “Very good offense. One of the best in the country right now,” Southern Miss defensive coordinator Tony Pecoraro said. “They’re loaded on offense. They’ve put some points on the board. So we’re definitely going to have to come up and play Saturday, that’s for sure.” read more: http://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/story/sports/college/southern-miss/blitz/2017/09/25/first-look-north-texas-bringing-plenty-offense-southern-miss-saturday-football/697415001/

  21. It’s a year of milestones for University of North Texas Regents Professor of Double Bass Jeff Bradetich. His treasured bass turned 250 years old this year; he celebrated his 60th birthday – 50 of those years have been dedicated to playing bass; he marked 30 years of honing the skills of talented musicians in his summer strings institute; his foundation just celebrated its first decade; and now he plans to commemorate it all by performing at Carnegie Hall 35 years – almost to the day – after his debut in the prestigious venue. 22. Jalen Guyton has dedicated his life to football. He grew up in a town where state champions are the closest thing to royalty and played multiple games in an NFL stadium. “I have a new type of respect for football,” Guyton said. “I kind of look at life in terms of football. Today is a football game that I got to overcome. This week is a football game. It’s a metaphor for life.” Currently at North Texas (2-2, 1-0 Conference USA), his third college in three years, Guyton is trying to hang onto his NFL dream. A four-star recruit out of Allen (Texas) High school, Guyton committed to Notre Dame and redshirted his first season. On Dec. 18, 2015, two weeks before the Irish faced Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl, Guyton was suspended for disciplinary reasons and left the program. After a one-year stint at Trinity Valley (Texas) Community College, Guyton returned to Division I football and enrolled at North Texas. Guyton has started all four games and is second on the team with four touchdowns. “I don’t see (North Texas) as an endgame,” Guyton said. “Right now, I’m focused on being the best football player, student, teammate I can be.” read more: http://dailyorange.com/2017/09/two-transfers-north-texas-jalen-guyton-matures-offensive-threat/
