  11. The Denton Record-Chronicle is going to be locally owned again. Bill Patterson, the longtime publisher of the Record-Chronicle, is purchasing the paper from A. H. Belo Corp., which has owned the publication since 1999. The sale will be completed by the end of the year, he announced Tuesday afternoon. "I think there's a great opportunity in Denton," Patterson said. "I feel strongly that Denton needs a daily newspaper and robust and trusted digital portfolio, and I believe we can be productive and grow." The decision to buy came after Patterson and leaders at A. H. Belo realized the solutions to problems at The Dallas Morning News, the flagship publication of A.H. Belo, wouldn't necessarily work at a smaller paper like the Record-Chronicle, Patterson said. Grant Moise, executive vice president of A. H. Belo, reiterated that the paths forward for the two papers weren't the same. So the split makes sense, he said. The two companies will continue to work together after the split, Moise said. The newspaper will still be printed and distributed through Belo, and The News and the Record-Chronicle will continue to share content. "The real difference will be in the ownership structure, and Bill and the DRC team will have real, true autonomy and independence over the strategic decisions they make in the future," Moise said. "We're excited we're going to remain business partners with the DRC, and I hope we'll be able to play a meaningful part of their future, just in a different way." read more: http://www.dentonrc.com/news/news/2017/10/31/longtime-publisher-buying-denton-record-chronicle-ah-belo
  12. Love or hate em - as most of us do - you have to be impressed with what SMU has been able to accomplish this season. They have won 6 games and clenched their 1st bowl bid in awhile. Will they win their division or the entire AAC remains to be seen. I did notice something about their model which I think we could learn from. Back in 2014 Chad Morris had a blueprint for how he was going to turn a morbid SMU program around. First off, SMU had to lure Morris away from Clemson. Not sure if you noticed that SMU was listed as paying the highest head coaching salary in G5 a couple of days ago at $2,095,793. So with the disclaimer that it doesn't hurt to have big pockets let me focus in on a particular assistant coaching model that Morris implemented. Morris hired a lot of young up and coming assistants that SMU didn't have to pay too much for. Hungry guys that were looking to move up the food chain and believed that Morris was the guy to ride up the ladder. One of those assistant hires was extremely key to their success. Interestingly enough this hire was their DC Van Malone. Malone was at UNT for one year in 2005. I remember Coach Dickey and many other on the staff who raved about his ability as a recruiter. He played college ball at Texas and played 4 years in the NFL for the Detroit Lions. I remember feeling sad that we didn't even really try to keep him on the staff when he was lured away to coach at Tulsa for way more money. My point is every staff needs that one guy who can swing it out of the park as a recruiter. I am sure he is a fine coach and you certainly have seen the results of his and Morris' recruiting efforts on the Hilltop over the past several years. Please don't read this as an indictment of our current staff as it is not. We have some outstanding recruiters on this staff and have landed some great players. We may well have this type of guy on the staff now. Or maybe not. My point is with recruiting being the lifeblood of any program, perhaps we should be using a model that allows for a coach with a specific recruiting resume and history of success to be a big part. You are going to have to compensate this person at a very high level and offer them a pathway to future success. My point is, if the system requires this type of person to boost your recruiting efforts perhaps you need to address it in terms of staffing. We are already seeing this type of thing happening with other teams in C-USA. Frank Wilson hired Bo Davis from Alabama as a defensive line coach. Scout.com’s 2016 national recruiter of the year. He also had some NCAA baggage which allowed UTSA to get him at a good price. But you get my drift.
  13. http://www.meangreensports.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/102917aaa.html Oct. 29, 2017 Box score HOUSTON – Freshman Zachary Simmons scored the game-winning basket with 18 seconds left to lift North Texas men’s basketball on the road at Houston Baptist, 84-81, in an exhibition Sunday at Sharp Gym. With the Mean Green trailing by one point 81-80, Simmons was able to muscle his way inside and score with 18 seconds left. The new look team finished with four players in double-figures, including 20 points from Smart and 19 points from freshman Umoja Gibson. Sophomore A.J. Woolridge filled up the stat sheet with 12 points, five assists, six steals and three rebounds. In the second half, no team had a lead bigger than eight points thanks to nine lead changes and 10 ties. Smart scored 11 of his 20 points in the second half to help North Texas come away victorious. North Texas led 47-43 at halftime thanks to 17 points from Gibson. Lawson added 11 points and Smart hit three three-pointers. The Mean Green used a 15-3 run in the half to build a 10-point advantage. Gibson sparked the rally with 10 of the 15 points. Houston Baptist kept the game close by closing the first half on an 11-2 run to cut the deficit to four. 14. That’s what he gets for bowing up to Coach Littrell and wrongly accusing Wheeler like he did. Who will be his replacement? Here’s a list of possibles: https://www.seccountry.com/florida/florida-gators-coaching-candidates-jim-mcelwain-replacement Surprised that Kiffin wasn’t on the list.

  16. He is missed in many ways. I loved his energy and his recruiting.
  17. GMG Old fart dictionary translation: "/s" is suppose to imply sarcasm.
  18. Knowing @AustinFromUNT as I do, and he is a really good guy and great young fan, I really don't think that was what he meant. But I also understand, as a long time fan you often get grouped into that "bad" category by omission, which can feel offensive. I think back to the Dickey, "these mofo's" comment. At the time, that really bothered me when he said that because I felt it was directed at me. After all I was a "fan". In hindsight, I realize that it probably was not me or many other good fans that he was addressing with his comments. At the emotional point of him saying that he probably didn't feel the inclination to add the caviat, "with some exceptions.." etc. Those that were around at that time get my drift. There is a small but very loyal group of fans who have been there through thick and thin and they are often maligned by being grouped with the fair weather ones who seem to come and go. They are different and I agree there is a distinction between the two that needs to be addressed.
  19. Agree 100%.
  20. I thought Nic Smith really stepped up tonight. He’s just a RS freshman and that bodes well for the future. Rico had a solid night too. I know we could have done better but there were some bright spots.
  21. We have to get our line improved anough to get these 1-yard plays for 1st downs. This play has killed drives all year long. Find one or two guys that can pile drive.
