My understanding is we got pretty burned last year with two of our top juco recruits not ending up qualifying and they are very hesitant to let that happen again. Personally I think you have to take some calculated risks to land the big fish but I also can appreciate their concern after what happened last year.

Fayetteville is an awesome college town. There is a scenic drive there that's amazing and Dickson street has some good bars. Definitely a UNT trip worth taking especially with them being a tad down (but still SEC talent).

DRC: Follow up thoughts on signing day, C-USA power dynamic
Harry replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Ok, so the curb stomped comment was a little hurtful albeit accurate. Otherwise good art. -
DRC: Mark Tikhonenko cleared by NCAA, will redshirt
Harry replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Basketball
If we were Texas this wouldn’t have happened. Very frustrating. Not fair to the young man and his family. -
I have seen it from time to time.

I think the point that needs to be made here is that FAU and FIU are starting to be the programs that C-USA projected them to be. I know many questioned when these programs were added as being deserving. Now they appear to be powerhouses not just in C-USA but in G5. It is a good thing for the conference. Also our bowl performance as a whole has been on the upswing.

http://www.meangreensports.com/signingday/ Dec. 20, 2017 DENTON – North Texas head football coach Seth Littrell announced the first group of the 2018 Mean Green signing class Wednesday, in conjunction with the newly-instituted early signing period. The class thus far, is comprised of 14 student-athletes from four states and features 11 high school signees and three junior college transfers. “As we raise the level of expectation around this program, we have to continue to bring in players that can help us accomplish our goals,” Littrell said. “Competing for championships and playing in bowl games is now the standard for Mean Green football, and these young men that we signed today will help us do that for the foreseeable future.” North Texas will announce the remainder of the 2018 signing class on National Signing Day on Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2018. For a full list of the 14 Mean Green signees, as well as bios and videos, head to Mean Green Signing Day Central.

'18 DT Tayland Humphrey (Hutchinson CC, Kansas)

Impressive pickup for Butch. East is getting stronger and the Florida schools in particular. -
@Rudy had a good vantage of this play. I will let him respond in detail but it was clearly a shoulder. There were some damn bad calls in the game but this was not one.

I know this question beats people down but anyone heard anything on the Russian and will he become eligible this season at 2nd semester?
-
He’s a difference maker and one of the best we have had. Problem is we need 4-5 more like him.

In hindsight it wasn’t probably not the best bowl from a timing standpoint and certainly not the best matchup for us. However, from a player/fan perspective it is still such a damn fun town to visit. And it’s nice for it to be over a weekend so you don’t have to miss much work. Had an amazing dinner at ACME after the game today and it brought me spirits up from the post game loss blues. It reminded me of what a great and unique town this truly is. PS I tried the chargrilled oysters tonight and they were amazing.

Well stated.

I feel like our situation is eerily comparable to the Houston Oilers back in the "Luv you" Blue days. They would get better every year but they still had to play Pittsburgh in the AFC championship game. Yes it would be great to win the conference and get in the top 25 and those are good goals to have. But guess what, in C-USA you still have to beat Kiffin and FAU to do that my friend. And so far he is still there. Can we make that type of jump on one year? I think we can but we are going to have to kill it in recruiting and I don't mean high school guys you have to hit big on jucos as well. We also have to figure out why our preseason top ranked defensive secondary went down the commode. What the hell happened and how can we fix that? As painful as the FAU games and this Troy game were, we need to remind ourselves at how good they were against us and what we can do to get where they are. At this point in time, they are further along the path we need to take to reach our goals.

"IT IS ALL ABOUT RECRUITING"..."IT IS ALL ABOUT RECRUITING"... This pertains especially to life as a g5. Under Mac, we could not recruit a QB to save our life. Now we have a great QB but we need to improve the line in front of him or we could lose him to injury. I think our skill position players matched up well against Troy perhaps even better. But they dominated us in the front lines, front seven. In the end, they just had better players than we have. And recruiting is not just about stars and accolades, it is also about character and potential or projecting what a player could be. Before TCU came into their place in the Big 12 and upper echelon of college football programs, they had claw and scratch like we do and they did it by being creative. They turned running backs into nosetackles and tall rangy tight ends into offensive tackles. We should follow their model. And I get that we have to have speed on defense, I truly do. But Troy had some linebackers with size and physicality today. That took a toll on us as the game went on. We need more size and nasty physical players on D. I think Littrell is a great evaluator. Fine at QB taught me that as well as Bussey and several others. Fine may be the best we have had at the most important position. I don't know if Littrell (and when I say Littrell I include his staff) are yet the closers that we need them to be. In Littrell's defense, he inherited a mess from Mac. Lane Kiffin and Neal Brown were given a better deck of cards personnel wise, I am convinced of that. It takes stime to change the perception that had been tattered over a decade under Mac and Dodge. In the end, it was a very good season for us and I do not mean at all to take away from what was accomplished. When you look at where we have been just a couple of years ago it is amazing how quickly Littrell et al has turned this thing around. But I see today's game and the losses against FAU as a good measuring stick for where we need to be and how we need to get there. There needs to be a sense of urgency about this. There have been some disappointments this year as well. I felt like our secondary would be the strength of the team. As today evidenced, it may be the weakest. How did that happen? What went wrong? Needs to be some soul searching and study into that issue and it needs to be addressed. As great as the offense was this season, and it was statistically one of the best, I felt like our defense took a big step back. A bigger step back than they should have if you look at who we brought back. As great as this season was, we can't afford to stand still. If we don't have the right system and right coaches to recruit than we need to get them in place. I am thrilled with Wren Baker and Prez Smatty and the BOR. We seem to have all of the pieces in place to build this program to heights we have not seen. What we cannot have happen again is the false post bowl sense of "we have finally made it..." I remember after Mac took us to a win in a bowl, we were all convinced that we had made it to the next level and it turned out we had built our house on a deck of cards. And believe me, 95% of that was recruiting deficiencies. Luckily we will have Littrell and most of the staff for another season. Will we either stick with what we have or will we try to make improvements and be able to stand tall in games like today or in the conference championship against FAU. My hope is for the latter. GMG!
