Stump would be crazy not to take the assistant job at UNT. As would any other high school coach looking to move up into college coaching. Theonly reason someone like Stump may not be interested is lifestyle. The travel in college coaching can be daunting compared to high school. If you are a believer in Coach Dodge's abilities, you would have to think that landing an assistant job with him could eventually turn into a BCS gig!

Dude you guys got to a bowl and have a terrific head coach and AD. Things will only get better!

I think they see Santiago as a natural strong guard and they think he will be a very good one in line with the likes of Lineberry. Here are some of the interesting players to consider for the defensive line next season. Eddrick Gilmore - He should have his eligibility back as a reshirt sophomore and have put on more size. This guy has a frame that could carry a lot of weight, he's 6-5 and 245 as a true freshman a couple of years ago...my guess is he could be in the 270-280 pound range before all is said and done. He could he play defensive end or will he stay at linebacker? Marquis Sykes - Listed at 6-3, 253 but should also be bigger before all is said and done. Redshirted last year even though he made some plays in Fall camp. Likely a defensive end next year. Draylen Ross - 6-4, 245 but probably bigger than that now - played a lot last year as primarily a blcoking tight end. With Dodge, I could see him more back over to defense perhaps at defensive end initially although this kid is another possibly defensive tackle before all is said and done. Huge frame. Ty Rexrode - 6-3, 260 - Will be a junior this year and really seemed to be on the cusp of being something last fall. Very athletic former running back in high school. Sam Owosu Hemeng - 6-1, 235 - Very quick athlete that will benefit from a redshirt season. Plays bigger than his size. Kail Krider - 6-3, 245 - Early reports were he was a bust but he was just a true freshman. The thought was he would grow and eventually be an Evan Cardwell type of kid. Remains to be seen. Kendrick Ridge - 6-1, 270ish guy that is a fireplug and could thrive in the 3-4 alignment. Blake Burriss - 6-7, 255 - Heeees baaaackk - Burriss will never be a star but really showed some signs that he could play last season. Love his size. His offseason development (technique, strength training) will be a key. Joe Miller - 6-3, 270 - Joe has been a steady player but needs to improve his upper body strength to move it to the next level. Willie Ransom - 6-3, 242 - If he gets a medical redshirt and is healthy he could help this team. I just wonder if he will ever have his health back again. Jon Stewart - 6-2, 266 - Has a huge upside but didn't really get to play a lot last season. Another guy that needs to work on his strength. Has a lot of raw ability.

I think we are ok at center and guard, but need serious help at tackle. You always need to have plenty of quality lineman if you can. I also think our linemen need to get stronger in the weight room and hope this will be addressed.

Muts doesn't seem to have the spark I saw when they spanked us in Denton. CMU looks pretty solid tho.

http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/hssport...ge.231554c.html <H5 class=vitstorydate>Web Posted: 12/22/2006 10:58 PM CST</H5> Dan McCarney Express-News SOUTHLAKE — If their luminous history is any indication, the Southlake Carroll Dragons will have no trouble winning without Todd Dodge. They did plenty of that long before Dodge arrived as head coach in 2000. So much, in fact, that one of Dodge's first official acts was to institute a motto that would come to define his tenure: Protect the Tradition. Yet it's fair to wonder if Carroll will be quite the same after today, Dodge's last game before moving on to head the program at North Texas. A victory over Austin Westlake in the Class 5A Division I championship would put the finishing touch on one of the finest runs in state history, a five-year odyssey in which the Dragons reached the finals in every season while losing just one game by a single point. "It has been," Dodge said, "an incredible ride." Even to those who experienced them firsthand, Carroll's achievements over that span — a 78-1 record, two mythical national titles, three state championships and a current 47-game winning streak — stagger the imagination. "It gives you chills," said junior Riley Dodge, Todd's son and Carroll's starting quarterback. "You think, 'How did we do all this?'" <script language=javascript src="http://www2.mysanantonio.com/global-includes/rminclude.cfm?file=/news/includes/sidebars/mailbag/highschool.html"> The reasons are plentiful: top-flight facilities that include an indoor-practice field and a $15 million stadium; well-schooled athletes who follow directions to the letter; location in one of the nation's wealthiest suburbs. Sitting at the top of the list is Dodge. And like other iconic high school coaches — Gordon Wood at Brownwood, Ron Schroeder at Westlake, D.W. Rutledge at Judson — he could be difficult to replace. "It's easy to say they won before (Dodge) got there," said Cedar Hill coach Joey McGuire, whose team plays Cypress Falls in the Division II final today. "But look at what he's done. His record is ridiculous." It's been a dazzling rise for the 43-year-old Dodge, a former University of Texas quarterback who arrived at Carroll with a reputation as an offensive innovator and a modest 27-33 record. As the trophies piled up and his program grew stronger, Dodge's status soared. By last season, his talents were in such high regard that Rice tried to interview him for its head coaching job (Dodge declined) and Cowboys coach Bill Parcells considered taking him on as an assistant (Dodge interviewed but wasn't hired). When North Texas athletic director Rick Villarreal came calling last month, Dodge was presented with an opportunity he couldn't pass up. "I could have stayed here and won a lot of ballgames," he said. "But I don't have to move, I can take care of my family financially in a way that few high school coaches get, and all I have to do is drive 17 miles up the road (to Denton)." Throughout Carroll's reign, countless observers have dissected every minute detail in an attempt to fathom how one coach, working in arguably the most competitive city in arguably the most competitive state in the country, could dominate so completely. The attention makes Dodge wince. After all, players win games, not coaches. But coaches foster the environment in which players operate — a task at which Dodge has proven to have few, if any, equals. "He's just a great leader who knows how to treat people," said assistant Doug Stephens, a 25-year coaching veteran. "He's the best guy I've ever worked for." "We all have great trust in him," running back Tre' Newton said. "The things he tells us about other teams, he's always right. Nobody has any doubt that what he tells us is true." With mere hours remaining in his Carroll career, Dodge has precious little time to savor what he describes as "absolutely the most fabulous year I've ever had in coaching." That's because Dodge finally had the opportunity to coach his son as a varsity starter. The two have been dreaming about this season for years, ever since Dodge was working his way up the ranks and Riley was a fledgling quarterback who hung on his dad's every word. Now that it's almost over, neither can think of a better way to complete the experience of a lifetime than winning another championship. "I'm going to miss him so much," said Riley, who has thrown for 3,932 yards and 51 touchdowns. "It's going to be very emotional, probably some tears. Hopefully, we can come out on top and have a storybook ending." "For us to do all this together has been unbelievable," Todd said. "I have to make sure I stay focused on the task at hand. But I can't lie — it would be pretty dang special." Dodge spoke from behind his desk, hanging not far from which is a photo montage adorned with a fitting message: "Carroll football: A tradition well-protected." Just like he planned it. dmccarney@express-news.net

Good points Matt. I was very impressed by Riley - the kid is just a tremendous competitor and I would love to have him here. Tre Newton looks like the real deal too. To me there was no question that Westlake had more talent, they just didn't have discipline and coaching that the Dragons had. What a great ending to Dodge's high school career! I can't wait to see him build something special at North Texas! It is truly an exciting time to be a Mean Green fan. GMG!

Wow that was very impressive...

Santiago is from El Paso. 6-3, 290 range. My understanding is that he will be asked to play offensive guard for us. He had an very impressive first year on the scout team and appears to be a major contributor for us down the road.

As excited as I am about the wins over WKU, Tulsa and NCC I still think the conference tourney will be the ultimate yardstick that Johnny is measured by this year. Let me say this for the record, I am impressed with the talent that Johnny has put together especially when you consider that Flemings and Dennis are set to play next year. I think Johnny has realized the importance of landing transfers that want to get closer to home and get playing time. The Michael Sturns signing is starting to look huge. I am starting to feel very optimistic about the basketball program at UNT and I just hope that it will continue throughout the year and into the Sun Belt tourney. By beating WKU on their floor I think it is realistic to think we could land a spot in the big dance and just think of what excitement that would provide us! GMG!

I would say it is doubtful.

North Texas carrying a Tune It was good to read today about Celina’s ex-QB Nathan Tune earning a scholarship at North Texas. The true freshman went there as a walk on and shined in North Texas’ first scrimmage. Tune is about as good an athlete as I’ve ever seen come out of Celina in my six years here. He did an outstanding job helping lead Celina to the 28-12 victory against Omaha Paul Pewitt in last year’s Class 2A Division II championship by rushing for three second half touchdowns, including a 56-yarder in the fourth quarter. He outshined Ennis’ Clark Harrell for the North in the Texas High School Coaches All-Star game last month. Posted by David Hinojosa at 1:59 PM (E-mail this entry) | | Comments (1) Comments Thanks David for the kind comments re: Nathan! You, we all saw what he can do in the THSCA All-Star game. Had his HS circumstances been different, he probably would have had big stats and been considered one of the top QBs in the State (at least in DFW area) out of the 2005 Class. Mind you, Celina is a special place and we would not trade our 7 years here for anything. Very special community without question!! However, press and spotlight for Nathan was not meant to be. I call him "Cinderella Man" since he was underutilized in a power running offense and in 2A which gets little to no respect from D-1 schools. I can say that the good Lord must have bigger plans for him as he was put to test on several occasions over the past 8 months going back to the State Game. He broke his throwing arm elbow in the district tract meet last April (running high hurdles/a coach walked in front of him while doing his run up) which delayed his weight lifting/throwing 2 plus months. He then survived a accident (rollover) in his truck (2 weeks before All-Star game) where his girlfriend made him put his seatbelt on seconds before the accident (speed was not a factor). He shouldn't have been able to play in the All-Star game due to life crippling injuries or even loss of life. I told him the "Big Man upstairs must have big plans for him and soon" to get his attention and let him escape with only scrapes from crawling out of the window while upside down. His girlfriend and another friend also escaped unharmed. How awesome to have a miracle performed on/for you at such an early age! I have a feeling Nathan is going to do some special things for UNT. He is a great story right under your nose and just up the road!! As for Celina, you guys need to give them more coverage. I feel confident in saying that there is no place in the State of Texas that supports their youth more than Celina (no matter the activity). Every kid in the community is supported by the entire community. It is truly unique. Posted by: Steve Tune | August 20, 2006 11:26 AM
