  1. Put any coach in front of a microphone and ask him if stars matter and he’ll probably say one or all of the following: “We don’t look at that stuff.” “We trust our own evaluations.” “Give me a 5-star heart any day.” College football coaches are a pathologically competitive lot and recruiting is the lifeblood of the sport, but they don’t care about recruiting rankings? Look at it this way: You could build a pretty solid roster of NFL players taken in the fifth round or beyond, but you’d be nuts to take that roster over a roster of first-round picks. Being a 5-star recruit in and of itself guarantees you nothing, but in the aggregate, a 5-star is much more likely to succeed at the college level than a 2-star. Don’t ask me, ask the data. read more: http://footballscoop.com/news/stars-matter-recruiting-data-says/
  2. @TheReal_jayD is on 🔥🔥🔥
  3. I think we all pray that is the case. I would also say though, we have to start building a system with replaceable parts and not have the Fine era be a once every decade blip. We need to start weening the replacements in games where we can, even if it means Fine's numbers may suffer a tad. Shanbour is like a coach on the field but he has been here like 10-years so I think he graduates after this season. One of the others will have to step up and become the heir apparent.
  4. And believe it, this nightmare scenario did happen in the Danny Mac regime... whereby we gave out a lot of early ships and later we were not able to offer higher quality players who wanted to commit late in the process. look at the other C-USA teams and you will See many of them are holding onto as many as they can for later. also, I recall that nUTSAck had one year under Larry where they had a ton of early commits who were highly regarded and lost a lot of them late in the game so there is that concern as well. I do feel much more confident with this staff and their ability to manage the process. GMG
  5. He participated in spring in Fayetteville. He since decided to transfer to North Texas and is listed on the official 2018 roster.

  7. The nice thing about Aune is that even if it doesn’t work out at QB — he is athletic enough to play other positions.
  8. More on a new addition to the UNT 2018 roster... Cole McCrary’s game is simple. His key attributes are effort, motor, and passion. “I have a high motor and play with a chip on my shoulder. My will to be around the ball every play separates me from other recruits at my position,” said McCrary. The 6’2″ 230 pound two-way athlete has used these skills to dominate at the High School level. McCrary was nominated as a Senior Captain and helped lead the Woodrow Wilson (Dallas, TX) Wildcats on both offense playing Tight End and defense playing Defensive End. He was a 3x All-District player who finished his career with 17.5 sacks, 15 Quarterback hurries, 151 total tackles, 30 tackles for a loss, 5 forced fumbles, 4 pass knockdowns, 2 blocked Field Goals, 1 interception, 9 touchdowns, 400 receiving yards, and 30 receptions. His Senior season was extremely special because he played with a broken hand in a cast and still found ways to make an impact. “I improved my game a lot, became a better leader, and improved my weaknesses,” he said. read more: http://www.thegridironcrew.com/cole-mccrary/
  9. You know that's a great question. He was on the roster and played in the SMU game and just flat out disappeared. If anyone knows where he landed let us know.
  10. Here a good background story on Aune if you are wanting to catch up: https://sportsday.dallasnews.com/high-school/baseballheadlines/2012/06/05/argyle-s-austin-aune-packs-up-dorm-heads-off-to-yankees-farm-system
  11. kudos to @TreeFiddy on the scoop!

  13. Others like @BillySee58 and @Cooley can answer this better than me, but I would say he is very athletic and a good defender for his size. I think he can give you minutes at the PG position but is not a true PG per se more of a shooting guard that can penetrate with the basketball. He’s a good player and was just getting started when he had his injury. I definitely see him getting significant minutes this season if he stays healthy. The only problem is there is more depth this season and more competition at every position.
  14. I worry (respectfully) about Tim getting on campus. He had major interest from programs like Memphis (one Memphis site indicated that he had committed and was signing there) and yet they all cooled off right at the end of the process. We have experienced this before with high impact juco transfers. I hope like heck he makes it because he is a difference maker on film.
  15. His HUDL vid is worth a second look. Looks like a day 1 starter to me: http://www.hudl.com/profile/1368905/Tim-Faison

  18. OWASSO — Fear and hope filled Will Kuehne in June. Fear that he would miss out on North Texas, a school he really liked, if he waited any longer to commit as quarterbacks began to come off the board. Hope that when he did commit to the school in Denton, Texas, that he would be the piece to bring in big recruits to build the class. That pushed Kuehne, Owasso's star quarterback, to commit on June 19, landing a chance to return close to his hometown just two years after moving away to play quarterback and be closer to family. “That's where I felt best with the connections that I have with coaches,” Kuehne said. “Then growing up there, it's 15 minutes from where I was born and raised. Probably the connections and being able to go back home was what helped me make my decision.” Read more: https://newsok.com/article/5600684/the-oklahomans-super-30-why-owasso-qb-will-kuehne-chose-north-texas
  19. This quote is striking: “UNT hadn’t seen all three of its high-profile programs finish over .500 in the same year since 1977-78.” I’ve been preaching this to anyone who would listen for years now. Especially pertaining to football, where under Mac and Dodge we had about a decade with only one winning football season (2013). One of our biggest selling points as a University is our size and breadth of quality academic programs. Simply put we have great numbers of alumni. Most of which have grown accustomed to the reality of UNT underperforming in athletics. We have more potential in our sheer number of alumni than say an SMU or Tulsa will ever have. It seems like we may finally be hitting on all cylinders in terms of our coaching hires and support from the administration and Board of Regents. Consistent winning will lead to building support and engagement from our vast alumni base. The recent recruiting successes are another indicator of the trend upward. It is imperative that we continue down this path.
  20. Great player! Congrats to all!
