The year we won the CUSA Tournament and defeated Purdue, we lost our regular season finale. Cool the breaks on jumping out a window or say we have no shot in Fort Worth. March Madness is called March Madness for a reason.15 points

Posting this since I didn't see it mentioned anywhere on this forum. A fellow college basketball fan I know told me he heard a story on KERA 90.1 on Friday about UNT men's and women's basketball. I looked it up, and it was a short interview with Brett Vito. Not often that you hear about our basketball teams on KERA radio. Nice publicity! https://www.keranews.org/sports/2025-03-07/unt-built-what-might-be-the-best-overall-basketball-program-in-the-aac-heres-how13 points

When did we get so high and mighty that an NIT bid is beneath us? Post season basketball builds the brand name and culture. It helps in recruiting players in the portal. Guys want to come play in a winning program.13 points

This team was picked to finish 7th and lost 5 really good players in the portal. Coming into the season, if someone would have predicted that we would go 23-7 and finish 2nd in the conference, we would have said they were crazy. This team has flaws but has earned the right to keep playing regardless of the outcome in Ft. Worth. I feel like we have a good chance to win the AAC tournament but will still be proud of a great season and won't be mad about an NIT bid. Continue to build the brand name. Get to Dickies Arena Friday and GMG!13 points

My wife did not seem as excited about seven home games as I was. I then explained that if you break down the ticket price per game, it was an absolute bargain, which led to her asking how much they cost. I then faked a medical emergency not to answer the question. 😁12 points

I don't think anyone WANTS the NIT per se. The only debate was if it'd be better to be one and done in the NCAAs vs a deep run to the semis of the NIT and/or win it. Having experienced both situations as a fan, I know which I preferred (NIT title). Since I don't know the future, anyone with a brain would rather take a chance at the NCAA Tournament because a Sweet 16 type of run (which given our defensive style of play would frustrate many/most schools and is a possibility) would be the biggest thing to happen to our athletic program since the Don January Golf National Championships. We can totally win the AAC this weekend. Should we do so, we're exactly the kind of squad your average 5 seed doesn't want to see.11 points

The NIT isn't anything close to being the HOD Bowl. I don't think people realize how tough it even is to get into the NIT. There are over 350 D1 schools. You basically have to be in the top quarter to make it into either tournmnent. There are like 40 Bowl games...over 60% the schools that play DI football make one. Making the NIT is like...making the Gator Bowl or something. If somehow we ended up in the Gator Bowl that'd be the biggest deal the football team had ever accomplished.11 points

stoked to be in the barn for this one. looking back, I think my last game in person was the 12/6/17 OT win v. Indiana State...I remember AJ Lawson hitting a clutch shot to send it to OT and closing them out in the extra 5. prior to that it was a Benford game (so a loss) at Rutgers in 2016.11 points

I was thinking about this the other day and i think there are a couple of factors at play here, the primary one being that our basketball team doesn't sh*t the bed every season. Additionally though, the current state of roster turnover in for G5 schools in football makes it really hard to follow players. Even if you have the same issue with b-ball, it's only 8 guys and we see them mostly twice a week. Now let's go see these guys get some hardware.10 points

Imagine what 7k of fans attending games every night would do for the Men's program and 3 to 4k for the Women's program would do? The Pit would be a hugely hostile place for visiting teams to play. A Fan can only dream.10 points

I get having high standards and all... but honestly, I think we're already there. Over the past 7 regular seasons, we've won: '18-19: 21 games '19-20: 20 games '20-21: 17 games (5 games cancelled due to Covid) '21-22: 24 games '22-23: 26 games '23-24: 18 games (Mac->Hodge transition) '24-25: 23 games During that same stretch, we've won the CBI Championship, the NIT Championship, and a NCAA Tourney game during post season play. Basketball people recognize us as a very good team.8 points

As they say in the business, "We got a Steal"! Young lady looks like a potential WNBA pick. Hope all goes well for her at UNT first. I think her HS is in a lower classification because her game is more advanced than her competition (most games). Just finished watching a game against Benton, LA on Feb. 20, 2025. (NFHS Network) Looked to have scored about 30. Hope it doesn't hurt her average too much. #2 Ranked 2025 recruit in the state. https://allstatesugarbowl.org/news/2025/2/5/spencer-AOM.aspx https://www.lgrbasketball.com/2025-rankings Go Mean Green8 points

When a game is officiated the way it was today - everything called super tight - it unfortunately negates our team’s greatest strengths. Having Lorient out of the game early really sucked, especially on the shit, ticky tack foul that put him on the bench. Shooting 16% from 3 while your opponent goes for 50% behind the arc isn’t a winning recipe. We bricked some wide open stuff, right after we’d forced stops - again and again. Frustrating. Lastly, we’ve got to get back to rebounding. These last two games we’ve gotten out physical’d and just destroyed on the glass. All that said, we still had a chance to steal this on the road. We have the ability to win the AAC Tourney.8 points

You never know what happens in a conference tournament. I've seen squads that haven't done jack all season get hot and I've seen teams that rolled all league slate long get upset by a 6 win team. It's crazy to think we don't have a shot.8 points

I continue to think of myself as a football fan but basketball is so easy to attend, enjoy, and get home from, I may be turning. As far as getting 7,000 to a game, it starts with 4,000 consistently. I’ll see everybody tomorrow night for the last game in Denton this year.8 points

Tonight at 8 p.m. at Dickies Arena. Should be a close game.....as they won by 7 in Tampa.....we won by 7 in Denton. Go Mean Green!!!7 points

A topic almost as popular as uniform and helmet talk in the off-season, but it seems like we will be with the Super Pit for the foreseeable future. Given the time it's taken to get the Athletic Center expansion off the ground, I can't image raising the money necessary to build a new basketball arena any time soon. To be honest, with a decent crowd, it presents pretty well on TV for its age. There are certainly worse venues out there. Let's say it's our home for at least 10 more years (probably more in reality), what can/should be done to dress up the place? Not really considering cost, feasibility or priority, but here's some initial thoughts. This is mainly from the perspective of a TV viewer. 1. Lighting. I think we made some lighting improvements a few years ago, but even with the improved production quality of ESPN, there are camera angles where the court and players don't show up well. 2. Removable curtains or something to block off all or portions of the upper deck seating. Artificially reduce capacity to force seating to be in the lower bowl. Can be removed if necessary for larger crowds. More crowd noise? Doesn't look empty on TV but could also look bad if the curtains are cheap or it looks like we're hiding something. 3. Dead space behind the baskets. It looks like we are adding some baseline seating on court, but is there any way to add more back there (student or standing room only)? Players need to get through the tunnels, so may not be possible. Maybe just paint the ugly cement floor if nothing else can be done or add some hardwood to extend the floor all the way to the edge of the stands. 4. Raise the floor? Is that even possible? Maybe not all the way, but bring it up closer to the first row of seating? On many courts, the first row (not court-level) is almost directly behind the scorer's table and team benches.7 points

The NIT is great for diehard fans but that's about it. College basketball is about the Big Dance. I'd rather lose round 1 of THE NCAA Tournament than have an NIT run. I'm willing to bet the players and future recruits care more about playing THE tourney or joining a tournament team than they do an NIT run.7 points

80 bucks for 7 games, 160 for parking in the blue lot for 7 games = 240 bucks for 7 glorious days of tailgating and football....not a bad deal at all7 points

Basketball is a real source of pride for me these days. It's funny as I was mainly a football guy and now basketball is the sport I follow more closely. We have had an amazing run in both men's and womens's basketball and I expect it will continue.7 points

Right. These arguments about "NCAA Tournament or bust!" is like saying "CFP or bust!" Look at some of the programs that are being prognosticated to the NIT at the moment: https://www.dratings.com/predictor/bracketology/ https://thebarkingcrow.com/nit-bracketology/ Tell me y'all wouldn't love to get a crack at the Longhorns/Ponies/Horned Frogs/Tar Heels/Villanova/etc... in POSTSEASON PLAY.6 points

Honestly I think we’d be fine with matchups in the NCAA Tournament assuming we can make it in. Our grinding, rock fight defensive style will give us a chance against anyone we match up with. We’ve already played competitively on the road with several teams that are NCAA Tournament teams this year. We’d fair just fine on a neutral floor.6 points

Another kick to my basketball nuts in 2025. Eh. Imma hope that taking an L heading to Ft. Worth is a re-focusing motivator. We have two dudes who can consistently score the ball…Temple was not gonna let Atin get a sniff in the first half, then B-Lo got in foul trouble in the second (that was as tight an officiated game that I recall seeing this season). Unless someone else careers, we lose if those two dudes don’t cook.6 points

1. Actually develop a marketing plan to get butts in seats. Then, act out that plan with tenacity. 2. Baseline seating. 3. Average 5k+6 points

I am in Frisco, used to have 2 floor seats, but at age 82 I just don't want the night drive. I also gave up 2 club seats after getting Covid twice and wanted to avoid large crowds. Wait! This is North Texas athletics. No need to worry about large crowds.6 points

Connecticut, so mostly relegated to contributing to UNT sports Nielsen ratings. Lucky if I make it to one home football game a season, but I still have season tickets. Made it to the away Navy game a couple years ago. Looking forward to the Army game this season (made it to the other two up here). Was able to attend a home basketball have a couple seasons ago and made it to the UMass game the same season. Considering driving down to Philly for the Temple game on Sunday.6 points
