  6. The administration has to be proactive, the AAC as we know it will not last much longer. As soon as the ACC looses their big brand schools they will raid the AAC, and UNT is not going to be on their list.

  7. I agree about Jared. He seems to go with flow of the other Texas schools and our AAC brethren. Notice this department really only hops into marketing action after we biatch about poor marketing efforts then he puts some nice things together. But initiating is not what I think of when I see Jared. I see methodical, safe, absolute proof of results first before acting. A move to the PAC would require a Maverick. If we took the chance and moved with Texas State we would leapfrog UNLV UTSA the rest of the Mountain West, and others who would secretly desire to move to a higher profile league. GMG

  16. It's winning percentage against the highest seed. We have the same winning percentage as UAB against Memphis (0%) and Tulane (100%). So, the next highest seed is 5th which is Florida Atlantic / East Carolina. We've won all our games against those opponents while UAB has split theirs. 100% beats 50%. It's important to note that this tiebreaking scenario is used before the application of other tiebreakers. For example, Florida Atlantic and East Carolina are tied for the 5th conference record. Even though Florida Atlantic would actually be the outright 5th seed today based on their head-to-head win over East Carolina, our winning percentage tiebreaker with UAB is applied before that one. Everyone confused now? Great. We likely get the 2nd seed if we win tonight and on Thursday against Charlotte. We will obviously get it if we in all three remaining games. The math is much more simple there. We would play the winner of the 7 / 10 game in the quarterfinals. Our likely opponent in the quarterfinals? Probably between Wichita St / Temple and Tulsa / UTSA.

  18. I just remember Pete Incaviglia hit a bomb out of Mack Park field that landed in the adjacent apartment parking lot, roughly 500 feet from home plate. When you divide what I believe was TWO scholarships amongst a baseball team, it is a) a club sport for all intents and purposes; and b) enough to give each player McDonalds coupons, free Taco Casa tacos (then priced at 29 cents) and a Big Chief notepad. And yet, driving out to Mack Field and watching them was a delight. And every once in a while, magic happened. Title IX shut it down, along with a great Mens Soccer team, for the lady sports. As it turns out, I get immense joy, more than from baseball or mens soccer, watching our softball team. GMG

  19. Yes, NCAA bids bring in a lot of revenue for a Conference. The PAC hopes to be a multi-bid league. Texas is also valued for recruiting by PAC coaches. Plus, getting their teams seen to the middle and eastern time zones is important to an AD. It would be a risk/reward opportunity for North Texas. We bring good men's and women's basketball, and beat Oregon St this season, to maybe open some eyes up there? Hopefully football plays well hosting Washington St in football this fall. Playing in DFW would be a good recruiting trip for the PAC. I'm just not sure Jared is a salesman for such an endeavor. He seems more like a sit-back-and-wait for someone to call, rather than initiating contact and being a builder/promoter of the program.

  21. This would make a lot of sense and is how I figured things would play out. Media partners have probably told them $10 mil per school is what they're worth regardless of which G5 schools they add. The Texas market is great but I don't think the G5 Texas schools available currently bring enough value to boost the media deal (including us, sadly). Now, if I'm the PAC, I do see the Texas market as a huge area of opportunity and who knows what some of the G5 Texas schools can accomplish with more money. I've read on Redit threads that the new PAC really values basketball and considering some of the additions (Gonzaga, St Mary's), that seems pretty obvious. No clue how plugged-in those reddit members are so it could just be basic fan observations. If you're looking at the two main revenue sports, we have a clear edge in basketball over the other Texas G5s available. If they want to be a basketball conference for the sake of earning a bunch of tournament credits to boost their earnings, there's not many better schools available than us. Here's to hoping we get an invite and take a chance.

  25. Tigers win after scoring over 50 points in the 2H. Overcame a halftime deficit. I just think that Memphis has some kind of matchup edge over UAB. They don't seem to be bothered by UAB's athleticism the same we are. That's okay, in a way, because I think we are more closely in the mold of the two teams that beat Memphis: Temple and Wichita State.

  26. No, not in today's $. The figures I saw mentioned was that media was bidding on the western time slots, and it didn't matter which G5 programs were added, that they were all valued the same. But then I saw there was belief that some Central Time zone schools would add appeal with some of the media platforms, getting into Texas markets. Maybe they are selling it as these 7 base schools plus 3 additions = $10/mil each/yr? Media deal supposed to be finalized by end of this month. Then the MWC poaching court case settled or mediated, then the $$ remaining in the PAC bank will be know along with future revenue expectations to see potential invitees. We'll see if any of it is close to factual, lol....

  27. I think the main thing that Rodney and staff have to figure out....is where are they with the pitching staff right now. Has Anneca Anderson become our #1? I was thinking about this the other day. Is it possible that Skyler doesn't like being the #1 pitcher? When she was so good as a freshman.....as I recall, Ashley Peters was our top pitcher. I wonder if lesser pressure....might work wonders for SS. And who do we have at #3? Mack Attack (Childers) has been good in the past. I think her last relief outing went well....several games ago. Kayleigh Smith pitched really well against CBU in a loss Saturday. Smith wasn't very good as a true freshman....but is showing signs of being good. That's what I hope will happen with the three true freshmen (Maloney, Buffington, Gaddis) pitchers....that they will get much better as they get more used to the college game.

  28. I’ve gone back and forth on the PAC but it’s time we take the risky leap. The Boise AD says Texas is very important to the new PAC. Texas State is going and we represent North Texas. DFW Austin are rich markets. San Antonio is too close to TSU and I don’t think Memphis or Tulane will bite. We have the basketball programs and this is going to be a big 12 level bball league with St. Mary’s College, Gonzaga, San Diego State, Utah State, Colorado State and Boise. All legit bball powers. Unlike in CUSA and the AAC where the leagues took steps back after we joined the PAC is not going to fall off. They’ve got established powers in there. I watched the Oregon State St. Mary’s game last night and it would be great to call those programs bball conference peers. We’re probably locked out of the Big 12 with TCU in town. This is a chance to elevate and take our product out west to the Bay Area, Southern California, the Rockies and the Great Northwest. It’s time to show our interest. Don’t let them lowball us and definitely present our strengths and make a play to go bigger. GMG

  29. Wish I could have been there...great crowd, great team, great game for Senior Day. Great fan in FlyontheWall to provide great food and atmosphere to support the women's team in the great basketball year at UNT. Now on to Dickies Arena...let's take both championships back to Denton, Mean Green! gmg

  34. all the praise aside, I still have concerns about building next season's roster around him...hopefully he's still in a #2 role next year and we can bring in a big time scoring guard. this likely deserves it's own thread soon enough, but let's just say everyone who can come back does next season and our two commits make it to campus (all things up in the air): 1. Brennan Lorient, 6'9" Sr 2. Grant Newell, 6'9" Sr 3. Jasper Floyd, 6'3" Sr. 4. Tyran Mason, 6'6" Fr./Soph 5. Alex Cotton, 6'5" Fr./Soph 6. Brock Vice, 6'10" Soph 7. Baron Smith, 6'9" Fr 8. DJ Thomas, 6'8" Fr. 9. Cahmai Crosby, 6'3" Jr this would leave four more spots. give me this template of player - Tristan Thompson (D1 transfer) - Ryan Woolridge (D1 Transfer...and I'm specifically thinking of Rowan Brumbaugh of Tulane here) - some kinda Eric Tramiel/George Odufuwa hybrid (D1 transfer) - best available JUCO/freshman the likelihood of only needing 4 more recruits is pretty low, but this is more or less the blueprint I'd like to see our roster follow next season

  42. Its really crazy we still find things to complain about when we win. We have gaps in offense in every game, yet still only have 6 loses. If the gaps in offense were as big of a deal as people are making it out to be, why are the games still so close? I get we have great defense and that helps.

  43. “Every game”? A little exaggerated, huh?
    1 point
  44. agreed, but also, this conversation is happening at 85% of the teams in the nation... "if we could just play consistently well for both halves we could be (insert: '.500', 'a championship contender', 'the number 1 seed', 'ranked in the top ten', etc.) then there's 14% of programs that feel they have no hope and/or don't care and the last 1% is made up of overconfident programs.

  45. ... and starting that same game, from 20:00 - 10:06 in the first half, USF scored 7pts. A terrible 10 minutes... for them. Want to win the conference? Keep doing that. Right? If so, we have to stick to the script of incredibly tough defense, with offensive sets that take a long time so guys can catch their breath some & get back after it on defense. It's not unheard of for 5-6 possessions to come away empty (for any team). If we happen to dictate pace (and we often do), that same 5-6 possessions can stretch 8-10min... easy, because both teams don't get shots off until the last 3-4 seconds of shot clock. If we were an up-&-down, transition-style team, those same 5-6 possessions may only take ~4min. It is what it is. If this team were immune to scoring droughts, we'd be undefeated and ranked.

  46. Our pace of play is so slow that droughts, both good and bad, tend to get elongated. If you take 20-25 seconds to shoot the ball, and your D forces your opponent to do the same, droughts can get pretty long.
    1 point
  47. I'll piggy back here... and I know this particular issue gets hashed-over here quite a bit by the same guys who complain about said scoring droughts, so my point may have already been made by someone else, some other time... Our offensive style (which is one that is absolutely necessary in order for our defensive style to work), is an extremely slow-paced, deliberate one that will lend itself to exaggerate our scoring droughts, just like it exaggerates our opponents' scoring droughts (I believe someone brought up the unbelievable game VS Wisconsin where we held them scoreless over the last 9-10 minutes of gameplay to come back & win). That is unheard of for most teams..., but we can do that. Point being: If you like the results of our unorthodox style, you're gonna have to get used to some unorthodox, sometimes maddening, stats.
