  1. Today we honor our past. Many of the characters on this T shirt became life long acquaintances of mine after their historic first-ever run to the Big Dance in ‘88 in Salt Lake. For them, and those who came before and after, we never forget you guys and your accomplishments. GMG! Rick

  3. I don't believe this for one second. This stuff is about Quad 1 and Quad 2 games. That's what resumes boil down to. It doesn't matter what the school is named. Alabama hosted McNeese State this year who's NET is about what ours is and made the tournament last year. You look at most other AAC schools and their OOC was similar to ours. My opinion is this is why our coaches don't want to schedule tough OOC: "There several performance incentives included in the contract, including one tied to the number of wins UNT posts in a season. Hodge will receive $7,500 if UNT wins 20 games, $17,500 if the Mean Green reach the 25-win mark and 37,500 for winning 30 games." https://dentonrc.com/sports/colleges/mean_green/unt-new-basketball-coach-ross-hodge-agree-to-basic-terms-of-five-year-deal/article_32af169c-33ec-5e85-8226-5637457e6cc5.html They schedule a couple tough tests to appease the fans and "prepare the team" and then load up with winnable games. High major schools don't care about wins, it's all about winning the conference, making the tournament, and then winning that. Playing North Texas doesn't change that either way. Schedule them. FAU played at UCF and Michigan State this year. So can North Texas.

  4. Someone suggested this and they were spot on... He needs to find what he was to GM for offense. There is clearly a gap between our defense and our offense. It's not the pace, or the ppg. It's the lack of creativity/sets. He needs a guy in there to really cement the offense.

  7. Gotta love a good reverse jinx! The morning after a seventh inning collapse against Tennessee State, our ladies put together a 6-run sixth inning rally to come back and defeat Samford, 7-4. The last two insurance runs were off a single from Tatum Sparks, one of only four returners who hit a HR last year, who was 0-4 in the game before the hit and 1-11 on the weekend. Troy at 2:30!

  8. Did I misrepresent myself? I'm trying to say tap the breaks on any "we are free falling". I'm not justifying losses when the load is more than usual. I feel like there's a difference between these. We can disagree on the work load, and still agree it's too soon for "free falling". How about this We loafed around at the beginning of the UTSA game, the worst we've seen in years, and were thisclose to winning it despite the 1H performance. Then we lost a matchup that's been a toss up every time for years. The UAB games seem to almost come down to a last shot, and can go either way. I need waaaay more evidence before I consider these the beginning of a freefall. I mean, we might be entering one, but right now it's just 1) a game we lost that we should have won. Every team in the country suffers 2-ish of these each season. and 2) a loss in a series that seems like it's 50/50 every time. I hope I've clarified my position here. Here's a picture of some hot dates.

  9. Then play them in their house. An away loss at Kentucky is worth more than a home win versus Mississippi Valley. I'd rather have 4 road games against high-major schools than play bottom of the barrel schools at home. If you split those road games vs high majors, that likely puts you at 2-2 in Quad 1 games which would look great on our resume. A Quad 1 road game just needs to ge top 75. At our house they have to be top 30. It's almost more beneficial to be on the road because there's more room for error. Neutral site opponents need to be top 50 which is why so many schools do those tournaments. There's a ton of room for error. You just need to go .500.

  10. As a student during the time of the first vote, there were a couple of reasons it failed- one of which I would blame RV. When asked to explain exactly how the fee increase would be used to renovate Fouts or build a stadium, he wasn’t able to show a clear vision for it. Those who were skeptical (myself included) would have been more supportive had there been a clear plan. What wasn’t his fault was that the AD was pushing hard for it with students, which created a backlash and riled up the “no” vote. One of the tipping points, as I recall it now in my old age, was an alumni funded publicity campaign in favor of the vote. I think there were table tents or other materials pushing for a yes. I definitely recall people saying that if the alumni wanted it so badly they should pay for it. (And they were correct, but we still don’t.) The hard push on both fronts ran counter to UNT’s rebellious culture. We ended up funding the 2002 increase in the student government at a reduced rate in order to be able to acquire the property across the highway that now houses all our athletics programs. (Most student senators who voted for it got kicked out by angry students, btw) That is likely why the next vote was done as a student initiative, but I would suspect it was coordinated with RV, but I guess we would need @UNTflyer to confirm.

  11. I seem to recall in the not do distant past that they beat us in a certain tournament in Frisco, then we finished out season by beating them in a certain tournament in Las Vegas, which led to a few people getting some big ass rings that said "NIT Champion" on them.

  20. Next year we play at Oregon State based on a home-home agreement. We need more of these with PAC12 and MWC schools. That game should be an opportunity for a quad one win next year.

  21. Early on..........but Ms. Bearpaw is looking like our best hitter. Thus far anyway. And our other TU transfer, Anneca Anderson....has all three decisions. 2-1....on the season. Nice to see Skylar mop things up...and get the save....

  24. ya, we don't need to be loading up with away trips to SEC and Big 12 schools, but there are plenty of pier programs in a similar position to us...top say 50-150 NET...that we could be better rounding out a schedule with. Mountain West (New Mexico, Utah State) Missouri Valley (Drake, UNI) Conference USA (Western Kentucky, Middle Tennessee) McNeese, if they stay at their level every school listed is top 150 NET with either regional or historical ties to our program. add in a 3 game tourney with an SEC/Big 12 school and a couple tune-up games in there, maybe against a lower-tier Texas school like SFA or Sam Houston, and you have a perfectly fine schedule

  30. Sometimes, it's the mental fatigue more so than physical. It's hard to get up emotionally for every game when theres that many in a short period of time. Ive thought weve looked flat the last couple of games. Plus, I think one of our guys was battling illness. So there's that too.

  32. So watching BIG WEST podcast today and and a guest speaker brought up the point that so far the PAC has repeated their previous mistake of being a west coast only conference, this time with schools with far less media value that those who left for the BIG 10 and ACC. Being locked into the western time zone severely limits both the PAC and MWC attractiveness to potential media partners. He stated that getting into Texas was a must for both conferences [UTEP doesn't count because of its isolation ] and that their targets should be UTSA ,Texas State , North Texas , and that it was a must for them to be in Northern Texas because of the huge market. The bottom line was that for either conference to survive they must get in other time zones adding football only schools if necessary as the MWC did with NIU. I am just the messenger but don't see how UTSA and UNT can come up with the $25 million AAC buyout.

  33. The problem is and should be obvious, good teams seldom schedule oc away games. Without a name like Memphis and/or money like Memphis, scheduling upper tier or even pier schools to games in Denton is very difficult. In fact, NT has been so good lately, that it is hard to even get decent away oc games.

  34. It doesn’t bother me at all. Love it or hate it, it’s what programs like UNT need to do to compete in today’s environment. We simply don’t have the appropriate time or scholarship capacity to bring HS players in, develop them for a year or two, get them to have a breakout year, and then lose them in the portal. We need to bring experienced college level guys in who can make an immediate impact for 1–2 years.

  35. I hate you....hope all is well on the other side of the world I came to North Texas because it was 7 hours away from my home. did not want to be around those I grew up with. I get why kids want to leave and go explore. every kid needs that.

  36. He doesn't need to rah rah. He needs to do his job. I don't look to him to be our "leader." I look to him to get his marketing/relations department to do their freaking jobs to fill up our arena/stadium. I look to him to canvass for money, corporate and private. I look to him to schedule as well and balanced as he can. I look to him to hire competent, winning coaches.

  37. RV got lazy after 10 yrs, Wren was good then got big eyes to move up and got lazy, Mosely has started out apathetic and has shown nothing that will actually grow the Program with fans, considering the $$$ being shelled out in the AD area, the ROI is pathetic

  38. 1. I have us at about 80 scholarship players. This count does not include Makenzie McGill who we almost assuredly need to put on scholarship to keep, and Evan Jackson who deleted his transfer portal post and hasn’t posted anything since. Also does not include high school commit Terrence Lewis who still seems in line to sign in February. That being said, we probably could sign a few more HS guys this February. We have space and likely will have more space after spring to bring in more portal guys this summer if needed. 2. Probably will have a better idea on this after spring when we have a better idea of where we still are weaker than we want to be. We have pretty good numbers at each position. 3. There definitely will be more transfers after spring but pure speculation on who. Larry Moore appears to be passed over at tackle, and I doubt he wants to spend his last season of eligibility on the bench. Same for VJ Bronson at DT. At safety I don’t expect Isheem Young to come back but I could be wrong. He came here because of Caponi and we seem to have been recruiting that position as if he isn’t coming back. BJ Allen at safety looks like he is in danger of getting passed up by multiple guys so he could be better off looking elsewhere for more playing time. I think Zach Evans is similarly buried on the depth chart. I‘d be surprised if any of those 5 guys were still here after spring. Those are 5 spots I pretty much expect to open up just based on guys who are sort of the odd men out at their spots, but looks like they’ll be here through spring to have a chance to carve out bigger roles.

  40. Game 1 of Saturday against Samford... We fell down 2-0, made it 2-1. Had the bases loaded with one out and two outs over the course of the last three innings, and could not capitalize. Samford hits a two-run homer in the top of the 6th to make it 4-1 and possible put the game out of reach.
