Are we not allowed to criticize this game? And how UTSA came in here and outplayed us? This game will have consequences. this is a horrible loss. Ross Hodge got out coached and his players got out played in this game. Doesn’t mean he’s a bad coach. But this game when you’re trying to make a national statement is BAD. Are we not allowed to say that? how can anyone defend this game?14 points

Beat a horrible team at home when you’re favored by 14.5 doesn’t seem too high. Let’s start there.10 points

Things that get old: Losing to UTSA in everything that I care about Losing in front of big crowds to in state schools8 points

Looked like a classic example of a team thinking that they were playing a bad team and they don't have to try. One of the worst halves of basketball at NT in a long time. Give credit to UTSA for taking advantage of an opportunity to embarrass a good team. Hopefully, this game will be a great lesson for NT and not the beginning of a significant decline.8 points

I understand that Coach likes a tight 8 man rotation. But when you have that first half scoring lull....and you don't throw anybody different into the mix....especially Tyrann Mason.....that I don't get.8 points

I would say the folks that walk into the Super Pit, or don’t. If our fan base is so fickle that a game like tonight, in the midst of what this team has done this year and this program has done for the past almost decade, can make people stay home…then we don’t have North Texas basketball fans, we have bandwagoners.7 points

If we lose by 1 to Memphis in the tourney finals and then get left out, I don’t want to hear any bitching…. just go back and watch this game. we have zero room for error. Just where we are. I'm watching the first half thinking “man UTSA wants it” I hope we get on a run and win the AAC tourney7 points

Losing to UTSA at home is an atrocious loss for UNT. This team could have maybe cracked the top 25 and now UNT has to win the AAC to get into the NCAA tourny. Up here in KY, when UK loses games like this there is hell to pay for the head coach. And I mean hell. Losing at basketball isn't tolerated here and NT should take the same stance. We have tolerated losing for too long. I don't accept this loss. Inexcusable to lose to a 9-11 team at home on a Saturday night. Just ridiculous.5 points

5,032 came out to attend the 12th home game of the season against UTSA. So far, the highest attended and first 5K+ of the season. Through the promotional efforts of the AD, attendance was increased by 1,317 butts in seats compared to the 3,715 that attended the most recent home game against FAU on 1/26. It's kind of sad, but eclipsing 5K for a UNT basketball game is a significant accomplishment. Excluding the 2022 game against LaTech (8,522) and the 2024 game against SMU (7,239), we have had only four 5K+ attended games in the last 4 seasons (a stretch of 55 home games with 4 more to go this season). We are still down (significantly) on the attendance front, down 18.19% and 727, on average, per game compared to last season. Well done getting the community and students out for the game, but don't let up. As for the game....for anyone that's been following Mean Green athletics for any amount of time, the outcome was painfully predictable. You could see it coming from a mile away. I don't know what it is, but any time we go out of our way to hype a game (I would not go as far to call this an "opportunity" game), we under perform and lay an egg in front of a nice home crowd. Here's a hot sports opinion. It seems when we increase the promotional efforts around a game, it affects our team negatively. They buy into the hype and it takes them out of their normal routine and playing in front of a noticeably bigger crowd takes them off their game. That's why I think it's important from a team psyche perspective to have consistency throughout the season in terms of promoting games. Every game is important. Playing in front of a large crowd should not feel different. Not sure what that first half was about (nerves?). UTSA seemed to play our type of defense and really frustrated us. We showed some meddle battling back in the second half, but we simply dug ourselves too big of a hole in that first 20 minutes. We also seemed to pass up good shots trying to set up perfect shots (or go for some Sports Center highlights) that we never got off or turned over with an errant pass. Frustrating, but our path to a tournament bid really hasn't changed. Stay healthy and get back on a winning streak so we go into the conference tourney with some momentum and a good seed.5 points

Everyone has bad losses throughout the season. Sucks it had to be UTSA, who is not a good team, in front of our biggest crowd. But while some find it easy to say "just like UNT" to shit the bed in front of a good crowd, again, I remind you this is probably the first loss for basketball in front of a big crowd since the 2022 NIT game against Virginia. We're still a combined 21-2 at The Pit this year. But it makes me sick those two losses are against SMU and UTSA. I don't care how bad UTSA is, they should be a game that is circled on our calendar each year as a must-win.5 points

I still love this team, but this game reminded me of the CUSA tournament game when we got beat in the game where we couldn’t hit anything. Lots of blame to go around, but this could be a blessing in disguise as we move towards the conference tournament. Can’t wait to be there next Saturday.5 points

It is hard to go unscathed in league play, no denying that. UTSA is not good, also no denying that. They just got run by like 20 against FAU. Fans are going to be pissed (myself included) that we had to have this game, at this time, to play some of the worst basketball of the GMac/Hodge era. It just feels so North Texas. Probably unfair cause basketball comes through more regularly than just about any sport we have - but it is what it is. Honestly, these past several games I’ve become increasingly concerned with our guard play. Today was a massive red flag in that regard. Then layer on the fact that UTSA managed to neutralize Sissoko today, and it gives me concern about the ceiling on this thing.5 points

Not even many bandwagoners. The Denton area has in my fifty plus years of following the team always took advantage of the school and provided little fan support. There are some great fans, but the norm is most are much more concerned with the Cowboys and the very top college squads. They enjoy the commerce the school provides, but do nothing to support the school or it's athletics.4 points

Beyond gutted on that drive home. Hodge literally hit all the points and called out the team in the postgame. He’s very self aware of what he has, we should be thankful. Let’s dawg out UAB and turn this around. ESPN2 game to boot.4 points

Sure. Eat an L at UAB. Eat one at FAU. Don't get embarrassed at home vs a bottom 1/4 team.4 points

Hey man. if this were the football team we would be taking about how unprepared the team was. which sure seemed like we were. UTSA outplayed us in every facet. Why is that acceptable? I thought we needed higher standards? I’m not saying fire Hodge. That’s stupid. But to at was a severe let down. And now we’re gonna bitch about attendance the rest of the year. lets handle the basketball team with kid gloves?4 points

Awful loss. No question about it. With that said, did anyone really believe they were going to win out ? They are 16-5, which is pretty damn good. My worst fear would have been winning out, getting another NET ranking of 38 and then getting snubbed by the NCAA again. Now we know that winning the conference tourney is the most important thing. And, this team is definitely capable of doing that. I just wish this loss would have come on the road against a better team.3 points

Nobody is saying to handle the basketball team with kid gloves. if this were the football team, we would be talking about multiple games where we got badly outcoached. This basketball team is 11-1 at home and absolutely has a right to demand that people show up. After 6 straight wins, yes we laid an egg in this game…but every team in our conference not named Memphis would love to be EXACTLY where we are and, yes, they have EARNED crowds like tonight every night.3 points

In NCAA history? Sure we have, just not in the last 50 years or so. I believe Indiana in '76 was the last.3 points

Unprecedented? We had top 25 buzz and lost to a Alabama-Huntsville team in Benford's first season. This isn't the same universe as that.3 points

One game can be an ndictment on a team trying to create a profile to hopefully get a sniff at an at large. Now, it's about getting to 20 wins, period. Confidence is hard to bounce back from that. Also, we've been playing with fire offensively all season.3 points

If we don’t think losing at home to a juco is an absolute disaster maybe I should lower my standards for the basketball program.3 points

Even though we had the chance at the end (and arguably shoulda won), the game was lost in the first half. If we'd stolen that game only scoring 13 points in the first twenty minutes, with both a nearly five minute scoring drought one one of 8+ minutes....that would have been remarkable.3 points

This was just a bad game all around. I loved the crowds energy and the teams resilience to come soooo close. But these first half holes are getting scary. I'm not sure if it's an issue scouting our opponents or just a young team learning as it goes. Just hard to see our outside shot at tourney gone so quickly. Still a good team, just needs to find that first half edge.3 points

This is what I feared the most, an 8 man rotation with 1 shooter who anyone can double team. 1 good inside scorer in lorient, and a bunch of hustle guys. Nothing wrong with that we started 16-4 but when you get a good defensive effort we will score 50 points at best and struggle. Until we trust shooters and or recruit shooters, this is the system love it or hate it. Nights like this make you hate it, but it’s also what got us back in the game. Give and take. Sucks it was such a good night for attendance. Let’s see if we bounce back @ UAB it’s obviously a huge game for us now3 points

In true North Texas form. “why don’t more people come to the game?” they do and we shit the bed EVERY.SINGLE.TIME3 points

The system worked though, we had every chance to grab this games from the jaws of defeat. So many times we let up on fast breaks, or had bad passes that didn't even end up in shots. That's not on the defensive style we play, that's just horrible mistakes that should not be happening.2 points

Absolutely pathetic showing. Horrendous decision making with the basketball all night. Careless turnovers. What a waste in front of a good crowd. You don’t deserve to be in NCAA Tournament discussion with a loss like that. Inexcusable.2 points

Wichita State's second half exposed some real holes in our team and it looks like UTSA has drawn heavily from that blue-print. on defense they're fronting post entries and quick doubling inside bc our bigs are pretty poor decision-makers/passers and over-playing perimeter passing lanes b/c we won't set a down-screen and back-cut to save our lives. on offense they're best play is just head-down attack off all misses and turnovers (of which we're giving them plenty of both). I was on this earlier in the season, but our offensive scheme is very poor considering our standing in the league/country and we've been exposed over the last 40 minutes. to not have even a "run-buster" set play to just free up an easy bucket when you've gone five minutes without one is inexcusable.2 points

Charge to the freaking goal and get some calls guys! Hold them to 10 in second half. Don’t start running with them and lock them down. GMG2 points

What a let down and crap of a first half. There seemed to be a little more buzz in the arena given the record, a Saturday game and UTSA as the opponent. Yeah their defense hasn't been great but the offense has been completely clueless and careless. FIX THIS SHIT RICH!!2 points
