I'm not trying to scold anyone here, but what's it gonna take for more people to come out and support our basketball teams? And other sports - softball and women's soccer are always solid, and volleyball just made a promising coaching hire. Our basketball teams are a combined 23-9, which is the best in The American. They're also a combined 17-1 at The Super Pit. But no one is showing up for games. I don't want this to turn into a bitch fest about our marketing. It is probably deserved, but the people on this board likely follow our athletics department on some other social media or email list. Every Monday on Twitter I see a post about what teams are playing at home this week. I know some aren't a big fan of basketball, do you dislike it more than you like the Mean Green? Many are rightfully getting turned off by NIL and the transfer portal. I don't blame you. But the coaching staff for the men are putting together its' school record eighth straight winning season. With Burton, the women won't be far behind. In football, I get it adds up for a family of four - tickets, parking, concessions. But the other five spectator sports offer free parking and normally a hella great ticket deal. Season tickets for basketball start at $99 (like $6.50/home game). If you like soccer, softball, and/or volleyball, an Olympic pass will get you a GA ticket for every home game for $75 (less than $2/ticket!). Again, not trying to call out the board, just want to raise awareness for our other sports, especially if you are feeling sour about football. Come out to The Pit at least one time the remainder of the season! The men and women deserve it. Next women's home game is this Wednesday, 1/15 at 6:30pm against defending conference champ Rice. The men play at home a week after that on the 22nd against Temple - last year's conference runner-up. Or, if you live in the Central Texas or Houston area, look for upcoming games at UTSA next Saturday, 1/18 and at Rice Tuesday, 2/11. GMG!17 points

You missed his point entirely. He’s not talking about having another“but Denton hates us” pity fest. if the same people (or just half of them) who can manage to make it to Datcu to watch a sub .500 team would make it literally across the street to the pit to watch a team that has won 🏆, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.13 points

Our lack of attendance is a result of many factors. I think it’ll pick up slightly when students come back but the promotion for games + home opponents have taken a significant dip from last season. I personally thought last year our crowds were FINE. (not great but moving in the right direction). We drew over 5000+ three separate games last season and 4000+ a few more. Last year I remember seeing signs stuck in the ground around campus promoting the basketball games and the university mass texting all students informing them about games with ticket info. These are little things but they worked.5 points

Part of the problem with basketball attendance is that they are not playing any notable teams at home.4 points

If UC-Berkeley can show up in full force including the walking, talking stereotypes then so can UNT. UNT's problem is that they never won big and gave people a reason to give a damn. If UNT can give College GameDay a reason to show up or get some sort of national attention, EVERYBODY gets on the bandwagon. Including people who all of a sudden remember that they are alumni.4 points

Exactly. Seems like every couple years another successful FCS school makes the leap to FBS yet fans on this board keep trying to push the idea it would be worth dropping to FCS if we could compete for championships. Silliness.4 points

The first 32 or so minutes of the game was the best ball we've played all year considering the opponent. When we were up 20 I was looking at USF's roster and stats to see if they were missing anyone big and they weren't. We looked like the men at Memphis once they started the full court trap though. Ugly finish, but it's another W. Now we've got defending conference champ Rice at home Wednesday night. Come on people, get to the Pit!4 points

We should stay and build the AAC with other programs who want out? Why? We should be proactive and try to bounce now, to the PAC if possible, with a few other regional members. The argument to me isn't PAC vs AAC today, it's PAC vs AAC in 5 to 10 years if the three you mentioned get their wish and move to the ACC before then. If Tulane, USF, and Memphis move on, we'll be basically be right back in CUSA. Then we'll be crying about how we didn't do anything to get into a better conference or how we've again been left behind.4 points

If he was so bad at RB why would he start in front of 4 healthy scholarship RB’s? Granted trying to recruit better players is standard for every school in the country. I think UNT signed a couple high school RB’s and one RB from the portal so far. The portal player was a second string RB at Missouri State who was behind a 3rd string RB transfer from K State. No one is saying Porter was Eric Dickerson but he was obviously the best choice according to the coaches and second best was McGill who played well and is younger but he still isn’t on scholarship either. So the “walk on for us” theory doesn’t fit when your best two RB’s were walk on’s. My biggest issue was the fact he wanted to stay. You lose staring QB, best TE,WR and O lineman but your leading rusher wants to stay and you let him walk? Maybe they will find a stud RB but for the 2024 season UNT’s most productive RB’s were both walk ons. What’s that say about the coaches evaluation of scholarship players?4 points

And even if we support our team by watching them on TV or streaming, the TV audience can't see us, the team can't see us, and the team can't hear our support. If it's possible to get to the game, we need to be there in person not only to get the better in-person experience, but to show our support to others. GMG!4 points

Rice is a private school and checks a lot of boxes for other schools that want to be associated with it. If they were to commit to improving their athletics, something they could easily do as a private institution, they would be very attractive . When to comes to Football or Basketball, at the G5 level I think a strong basketball program can carry more weight then football. Even the top G5 football programs barely get any attention nationally, yet there are plenty of G5 Basketball programs with national attention.4 points

UNT Head Coach Brittany Roth’s husband, Ben Roth, and their daughter were in the right place at the right time on Sunday December 22nd, and Roth was able to briefly save a life. Brittany Roth has been the head coach at UNT since 2017 and Ben Roth is a paramedic and firefighter in Plano. They hold season tickets to the Lions games, and Ben Roth told a Detroit Newspaper they try to make “four to five games a year as a family.” At the game on December 22nd between the Lions and the Bears, Ben and their daughter were sitting in club seats he described as “As close as you can be without actually being on the field.” That was when he noticed someone in a North Texas shirt, which was shocking as neither the Lions nor the Bears are based anywhere near Denton, Texas, the location of UNT. I think it is completely reasonable, and wild that we aren’t doing 5-7k every home game. I think about this a lot, and wonder if there is more to it than the traditional points. 1) Denton doesn’t care 2) we have a UT-tshirt culture 3) too much other stuff to do in DFW …I personally think throwing those excuses out there, even with the element of truth, is kinda lazy. We need to have constructive, creative talks to solve this riddle. We should still be getting 5k, even with the above. My 0.023 points

The real problem is with the students. Until you can generate real on campus and Denton residents interest you will always have attendance problems.3 points

The year we hosted Cal their message board was full of posts saying they should drop football. This was during the transition to the ACC. They mentioned the students and fanbase didn’t care about their sports and attendance was continuing to decline.3 points

UC Berkeley has more school spirit because it’s a school that most of their students aspired to attend and has high admission standards. We have low admission standards, and are not the first choice school for the vast majority of our students. Berkeley has a 11% acceptance rate, ours is 72%.3 points

Lampkin should be POY in the conference, couldn't be stopped in this game. With Hardaway fouled out, NT could not come close to breaking the press. Definitely, exposed a problem that needs to be addressed.3 points

Complete reversal of our game against Tulane when we almost came back from a huge deficit, only to lose. This time we were "Tulane" and almost lost it after a huge lead. Kudos to freshman Price who made some crucial free throws at the end of the game. Also to Lampkin, not a good free throw shooter, who made several of hers toward the end to match an overal strong game. We do need to work on breaking the press and being more careful with our passes, which too often are sloppy and lead to turnovers and easy baskets. Overall, though, happy with the win. It will be more difficult when we play them at their home. Hopefully we will be a full strength and reduced our turnovers before then. Next up is Rice at home on Wednesday. Look out for Karen Aston's UTSA team...they are undefeated in conference play, we know she is a good coach, and they have beaten us several times lately. We need to keep improving our play to match last season. GMG!3 points

You are arguing against a different point than the one he is actually making. He is not talking how well the North Texas football team has performed on the field versus how well the North Texas basketball team has performed on the court. He is talking generally about what a football program contributes to an athletic department versus what a basketball program contributes to an athletic department.3 points

1. I have us at about 80 scholarship players. This count does not include Makenzie McGill who we almost assuredly need to put on scholarship to keep, and Evan Jackson who deleted his transfer portal post and hasn’t posted anything since. Also does not include high school commit Terrence Lewis who still seems in line to sign in February. That being said, we probably could sign a few more HS guys this February. We have space and likely will have more space after spring to bring in more portal guys this summer if needed. 2. Probably will have a better idea on this after spring when we have a better idea of where we still are weaker than we want to be. We have pretty good numbers at each position. 3. There definitely will be more transfers after spring but pure speculation on who. Larry Moore appears to be passed over at tackle, and I doubt he wants to spend his last season of eligibility on the bench. Same for VJ Bronson at DT. At safety I don’t expect Isheem Young to come back but I could be wrong. He came here because of Caponi and we seem to have been recruiting that position as if he isn’t coming back. BJ Allen at safety looks like he is in danger of getting passed up by multiple guys so he could be better off looking elsewhere for more playing time. I think Zach Evans is similarly buried on the depth chart. I‘d be surprised if any of those 5 guys were still here after spring. Those are 5 spots I pretty much expect to open up just based on guys who are sort of the odd men out at their spots, but looks like they’ll be here through spring to have a chance to carve out bigger roles.3 points

DENTON, Texas — The UNT women’s basketball team handed South Florida its first American Athletic Conference loss with a 72-65 victory at the Super Pit on Saturday afternoon. Tommisha Lampkin led the team with 29 points, tying a career high. She previously scored 29 versus UTEP on February 18, 2023, and Tulsa on Feb. 24. 2024. The conference leader in field goal percentage improved her season average, converting on 11-of-12 shots from the field and 7-of-10 attempts from the free throw line. North Texas (12-5, 4-1 AAC) took a 33-21 lead into halftime, marking the largest halftime deficit for the Bulls (11-7, 4-1 AAC) since they trailed by 12 against No. 3 South Carolina on Dec. 15. USF’s 21 points were the lowest point total they have tallied in the first half this season. “I thought we followed the game plan to a tee as far as how we wanted to guard,” head coach Jason Burton said. “We just got contributions from a lot of people.” Jaaucklyn Moore scored 14 points on the day, marking the first time she has scored double-digit points in consecutive games since Nov. 24 and Nov. 25, 2023, when she posted 17 versus Samford and 16 versus North Dakota State. UNT’s lead got as large as 24 points before USF launched a comeback in the fourth quarter, getting as close as within five points. However, Chania Price and Lampkin combined to make eight free throws down the stretch to seal the win for the Mean Green. Up next, UNT has a rematch with Rice, who knocked them out of the 2024 American Athletic Conference tournament, on Jan. 15 at the Super Pit. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and broadcasted on the Varsity Network App with tip-off set for 6:30 p.m. CT.2 points

Yup, and much more recent athletic success. Cal is always going to have a high base of support because of the quality of the school, no matter how bad the teams may be. We have minimal athletic success and not many students that want to be here, so where does the school spirit come from?2 points

1) nobody has mentioned your name or school in this post yet here you are. 2) the thread is about basketball attendance (and other non-football sports). I know it's not the NCAA tournament but I'd imagine winning the NIT and a 31 win season just 2 years ago would count as "some sort of national attention." You look at the winners of the past 12 years and see Baylor, Minnesota, Stanford, TCU, George Washington, Texas, Penn State, Memphis, Xavier, and Seton Hall in the champion column. How nobody in Denton recognizes the achievement of North Texas also being on that list baffles me.2 points

Easy answer is Coach Hardaway not to get silly fouls. She rarely fouls out anyway so this should be an easy adjustment. I will say this, Hardaway may be one of the best if not the best point guards and ball handlers in the conference.2 points

We should elevate if possible and meaningful. After the PAC’s new deal we will see if that is worth the elevation. There is no point looking west until they have something to offer. Any decision made must elevate UNT. We have a lot of goods. Let’s do like Memphis and wait and see what their offer will be to enter into the Rich DFW market. GMG2 points

We should always try and improve our position when it comes to conference affiliation and over the last few years we have. Sunbelt....Conference USA and now the AAC. We are getting about as high as we can get without being in a P4 conference. Without the right schools the "new" PAC is not the right direction, literally (west) I for one do not want to be in the Big West 2.0. Winning games will be the best way to enhance our position. More money and exposure would be good but the PAC does not even have a media contract.2 points

Pretty sure he wanted to keep him but they couldn’t find a scholarship for now. Was told he could play in bowl game even if he was in portal. If he didn’t find a place he liked he could come back. Took all the one reps during bowl prep then only two carries in bowl game so that pretty much tells you what the future would be. Hard to turn down scholarship even though he wanted to stay.2 points
