I only give to the MGSF. I will support NT players, but not NIL. I pay for the name on the front, not the name on the back. And when you leave, I won't miss you for a second. Somebody else will appreciate the chance to play here. I will root for them.16 points

NIL is killing College Football. NFL not the same as it once was either. Politics, money, no affiliation, no allegiance. Now College = cheer for the helmet, logo, school name. Players come and go. My interest is dying off and I am a sports fanatic. Every stadium in America has pictures of past players, hall of fame. Will that die? why would I vote for a kid that played at multiple schools for my HOF class? I love watching Morris play QB. but will I follow him to another school .. Nope. Do you think Oklahoma or TCU cares what he is doing at NT ? Kids used to get a college education, school for free, play sports, maybe find a future job. Now its all about the dollar. Why would I follow that behavior ? Why would I buy a jersey with a name on it ? I followed Peagram, Kassel, Cobbs, Mason Fine, Dunbar, Darden, Guyton, etc. ... because they played for our school .. not because they came for a year and left. It's a shame but I dont blame them .. Money isnt everything but its tough to live without it. System Sucks.13 points

Did you see the 109,000 plus at the Texas-Texas A&M game? You think they care? You think Disney/ESPN who line the pockets of the NCAA power brokers with billions care if next years A&M-Texas game only has 105,000? The system is set to keep the same top 15 schools hoarding the money and players every year, and that’s how they want it. Rick10 points

I will renew my tickets but still am sad about the state of affairs. I will not give a dime to NIL though.9 points

I would hope you're correct but I think the problem is the power conferences, especially the P2, only care about themselves and truly could not care less if all other levels of college football disappeared.8 points

NTSU did this in 1982 and subsequently never won a single playoff game or conference title their entire time at that level. This program squandered what Odus Mitchell built.8 points

Days like today make it a lot easier to decide ‘tee time’ over ‘game time’ on Saturdays in September.8 points

Everyone keeps saying how this is now a business; fine. Starting next year, the work uniform should have one uniform for the road and one uniform for the home—no names on the backs. Cut out the uniform of the week combination crap (Yes, I understand this is a risk because many of you believe this makes the players happy and can somehow keep them out of school)—also, one helmet (could be green or white). Stop spending any money that is not necessary for uniforms that don't make a difference or improve the quality of play.7 points

UNT football fans, don't let a few players entering the transfer portal get you down. The Mean Green are set to host the largest number of official visitors this weekend that I can remember in my time covering the team. Some real game changers on that list! I would also like to make the argument that this bowl game fulfills the 'Necessary Roughness' trifecta: 1.) North Texas - home of the fictional Texas State school (all filmed in Denton) 2.) Texas State - the current namesake of the fictional team, but also, the only school that actually appears in the film 3.) Being played on the campus of SMU, the only school to suffer the 'death penalty' which is the premise the movie is about Can we rename this the Necessary Roughness Bowl?7 points

These aren't NIL transfers they are playing time transfers. They likely get, and will get, very little NIL. Exactly the kind of players UNT should be going after.7 points

Our youngest walks at the Pit on Friday. That will make the third (and final) UNT grad in the house. Proud papa here.7 points

Nobody should ever give to the NIL and this is exactly why. We have the power. Not the players. They bring nothing without us and the school. Stop pandering to them. They take and take and take and give nothing. They run away. UNT should never have a NIL. Most people don’t like flushing their money down the toilet for nothing. Zero point in paying players who only care about themselves. They bring nothing to the table. If any of these players who are leaving took a dime of NIL they should be ashamed and held accountable.7 points
-
No disrespect, but I've asked this question before. Name one player who has ever said that he left a school because they didn't have a big enough selection of uniforms. We need to stop acting like changing uniforms and not having an identity for the university is in any way good for us. The large majority of these players do not care about the school, and we should be trying to build an identity for the school, not worrying about what the players think about their fashion for the week.7 points
-
this is why I am hesitant to give to the NIL. I don't see the point if all the top players just leave.7 points
-
In the past, I would have been shocked and very upset at losing a top player. Now, I just expect it. I just don't care about college sports that much anymore and that is very sad.7 points
-
Yes, it is out of control. Teaches kids that if it doesn't work out, to take your ball and run off instead of working hard and earning your way.6 points

This is happening everywhere right now, and it's killing bowl season. The NCAA needs to move the Portal window back until all the bowls have been played.6 points
-
If we are stuck with NIL and portal, I think portal shouldn't open up until after bowl season. GMG6 points
-
I think this is a fantastic post, but I’m going to somewhat disagree with the first sentence. I think the transfer portal is the #1 killer with NIL #2. If a player only got 1 transfer (maybe 2), there would be much more stability regardless of NIL.6 points

You ever see those "Hard Knocks" or other NFL training camp shows....where they will haze rookies by making them stand in front of our everybody and sing their school song? Now guys.....would say, "Which one? I went to 4 different places."6 points

We were all fretting about New Mexico or Florida, but honestly for a team that lost 5 straight and hung on to beat a bad Temple team to get bowl eligibility, we did amazing with our bowl destination 1. Date- a Friday after NYD, 3 PM, many folks havent officially started their working year yet, nothing else on 2. Location - Dallas, a smaller stadium (full stadium looks better on TV), most of our alumni are here , also accessible by public transit 3. Opponent- Texas State- who filled the stadium last year, and who travels well and is an in state foe I dont know who we bribed to make this happen, but its way better than having to go to the myrtle beach bowl... though I feel bad for our players they dont get to travel5 points

I get that (agreed, unfortunately)...I used the reference more as a good reference for how fans could/should adjusting the expectations of "success". for some Prem teams, this year's main goal is simply avoiding relegation...maybe here that means avoiding a losing season for other mid-table teams it's finishing in the top half...call that 8-4 and a decent bowl appearance others have hopes of Champions/Europa league qualification or a domestic cup win...maybe that's 9-3 and a bowl win for every modicum of success we've had here in my 25 years associated with UNT...4 NOLA Bowl trips, NCAA tourney games, a Tourney win, an NIT win, Bowl wins, memorable regular season wins like Arkansas in football or OSU in basketball...I promise there have been those here quick to dismiss and downplay them as "not enough".5 points

I guess all it took was unbridled capitalism coming to something that you all love before you began to see it's evils.5 points

Enjoy watching them this year. The system is designed to scavenge their roster and ensure they don’t threaten the “elites” for long.5 points

I have no problem with donations to a university being tax deductible, but money to pay for play should never be tax deductible5 points

It is really pretty forward thinking and obvious. Good running backs are everywhere. And it is WAY easier to run block than to pass block. Run blocking offensive linemen are also inexpensive to acquire. We can’t win competing for the same players as schools with 50x our NIL budget. Let’s change the game. It is really the only way to win right now.5 points
-
Hard to be loyal to this team with the constant revolving door of players. I do think Morris will get another solid QB and WR in here. Hopefully we can get a transfer or JUCO OL that can play C/G. Sucks to lose people but that's the current landscape of college football.5 points
-
I feel totally fine. They showed last year they can identify and bring in talent. I have heard we have quite a bit (NOT a ton compared to the top of the conference) but more than we've had in the past to help land some talent out of the portal. DT got benched last game for a freshman who showed he was equally capable. Mercer wasnt going to play this year until we had injuries. I think Mercer is a year maybe 2 away from being ready for that kind of ball. Morris won't win the job at OSU, he didnt make it through this season healthy at little ole UNT. I get chasing a bag of $$ but we were willing to throw pretty much kitchen sink and he chose the P4.5 points

I feel bad for everyone who tried to support Chandler and this dude at that autograph appearance. You wasted your time and money.5 points

Instead of names......just have the word "Occupant" on the back. That's all they are.5 points

Nope. I’m not giving shit to the NIL. It is not built as intended. Why should I invest in something that doesn’t give two shits about me?5 points
-
Funding NIL to a competitive level isn't about ordinary fans. It's about convincing rich alumni to fork over the bucks. I don't think we lack fans who care. We lack loaded fans who care.5 points
-
I mean he’s good and I wanted him back obviously, but let’s not act like he didn’t contribute mightily to our 5 game losing streak. The offense was not effective in the 2nd half of the year - much of that as a result of his inconsistent play behind a suspect OL. Sucks cause the Bowl game is down the tubes now.5 points
-
This right here makes it harder and harder for me to invest in the program. Very sad that this is the state of college football, especially for non P4 schools. We are just a breeding ground for kids to get better and move on. If we have a high school recruit produce, they're gone. If we have a transfer produce, they're gone. I'm all for these athletes being compensated but they've got to get some guardrails on this thing.5 points
-
I saw this coming when he first came here. Oh well. The rotating door continues at QB. Idk if it’s just me but I’m not even upset about this. Morris was great but didn’t really feel like he cared about UNT, just the ability to build his stock5 points

Why would a coach allow a player that has declared he’s entering the portal to play in the bowl game ? Seems to me one of the advantages of going to a bowl game is extra practices. Why practice with a player who has indicated he is leaving ?5 points

With all due respect, I would be more pissed off at my school for letting a player that has said they are leaving play than I would ever be at the player for entering the portal. If Morris was to let them play, then he can kiss my ass!4 points

We need a camera crew following one of these guys at the end of the season and documenting how all of this goes down. How they notified the coaches, discussions with their fresh out of college NIL agents, phone/email traffic from interested coaches and ultimately signing on the dotted line. 30for30 - ‘The Anatomy of the NIL Deal’4 points

Because the whole system is flat ridiculous. Why should the fans have to directly fund “NIL” ie player salaries? These Universities- UNT included - have $600M+ a year annual budgets. Make the schools pay for all of this shit that literally no fans of any school asked for. Cut down the ridiculous coaching salaries and administrative bloat and pay the players with that. The system needs to be changed fundamentally, not ratcheting up pressure on schools fanbases to be complicit in this nonsense. There is no transparency in the NIL world. Just put $$$ in a pool and hope the Collective Leadership are effective sales people and good stewards of those funds? No thanks! UNT would be better off if we could just flat pay players out of the University’s annual budget. It’s now a University Marketing expense. Problem solved for UNT and every other school out there.4 points

I don't understand the shots being taken at Mestemaker because he is a walk-on. Didn't Georgia recently win back-to-back national titles with a walk-on QB. And for me, walk-ons are the perfect antidote to all these "me-me-me" NIL whores.4 points

Not worried for next season. There's another p4 transfer who needs to boost his stock waiting for an opportunity. Considering QB is the most expensive position, it seems a run first offense is the most cost effective way to be successful as a G5. Much cheaper and easier to replace offensive linemen/running backs than a QB. Here's a photo of the top ranked schools in terms of total rush attempts. Every single G5 champion is in this photo. About NIL, if you want the small people to donate $5-$10 per month, set up a web page with a live count monthly contributors and how much the monthly total subscription is. Show the small guy like myself that if I subscribe, it's not going into a pool too small to matter. If I a UNT fan went to the website and saw a live count of 20,000 monthly subscribers putting in $160k per month, they may decide to make that 20,001 subscribers. Going on the website, sending money, and having zero clue if it's doing anything will not entice new small donors. Netflix starts at $7 per month. You don't need a billionaire if you cultivate 20k small donors and it's much easier to lose a billionaire than it is to lose 20k small donors.4 points

It would be nice to hear the Head Coach or AD speak about these defections, their availability for the Bowl, where we are in NIL, replacements, etc. Too much info given by "X" or twitter, but not the Athletic Department. They want fans to invest in the program, NIL, Bowl and Season tickets...but without a current company prospectus!4 points

These guys barely played. UT will fill their roster spots with better players. This is nothing like what schools at our level are experiencing.4 points

If guys are getting $$$ then end the scholarships. They now have the money to pay for their own education. Just let them be semipro players. Because that’s what this really is now.4 points

kick rocks, put his stuff on the curb once classes done this semester. Do not allow access to facilities to players no longer staying.4 points
