  1. DENTON, Texas – UNT’s Board of Regents has approved the completion of design work for phase one of the Athletics Center expansion, Vice President and Director of Athletics Jared Mosley announced Monday. "As we face new challenges ahead, we're excited to move swiftly with Phase 1, taking full advantage of the momentum we've built and the resources at our disposal in an ever-evolving construction market,” Mosley said. “I am deeply grateful for the many individuals who have stepped up to support this effort, ensuring that we continue to provide the best possible experience for the young men and women in our programs. The student-athlete experience, capital investments, and NIL opportunities are all integral parts of the puzzle we’re working to solve every day. Our dedicated Mean Green donors and alumni continue to rise to the occasion, making a profound impact. I encourage everyone to identify the area they're passionate about and join us in this exciting era for UNT Athletics!" More than $4.4 million from 38 UNT supporters has been committed toward the anticipated $10 million fundraising goal needed to complete phase one of the Athletics Center expansion. Total cost of the project will be based on the price of materials at the time of construction. The Athletics Center expansion will be completed in two phases with phase one focusing on space for strength and conditioning. The remodel will expand that area of emphasis from its current 6,180 square feet to more than 20,000 – more than three times its original size. Phase one will include a 50-yard plyometric turf, 16 high performance dual-sided combo racks, 4,000-square-foot of open floor, 1,000-square-foot mezzanine of cardio, and a 1,2550 square foot nutrition site. Expanding this space will enhance UNT Athletics' competitive edge by providing student-athletes with a premier environment to train, strengthening their physical abilities, mental toughness, and well-being. This area will also promote increase team building and cohesion, allowing our student-athletes to foster a sense of team unity and camaraderie. Currently, UNT Athletics has the second-smallest weight room in the American Athletic Conference. Phase two of the expansion project will include improvements to sports medicine, the football locker room as well as additions of a new academic support center for all student-athletes and additional premium seating for DATCU Stadium. Phase 2 would follow the completion of Phase 1 and by way of a successful Phase 2 campaign. The UNT Athletic Center was originally opened in 2005 and is home to administrative offices, football coaches' offices, football locker room and equipment room, but it is truly the home to all Mean Green athletics including sports medicine and rehab in addition to strength and conditioning. We encourage individuals interested in learning how to support UNT Athletics to contact the Mean Green Scholarship Fund staff at MGSF@unt.edu or by visiting MeanGreenScholarshipFund.com. Every gift, no matter the size, makes a meaningful impact and helps advance our mission toBuild Champions and Prepare Leaders. For more information visit: www.MeanGreenSports.com/ACExpansion

  2. A University that produces rich, successful alumni that love sports, hate losing and are willing to spend their money to influence change in the athletic department.

  3. We need to find the Patrick Cobbs of DC's. How impressive is a coach who is down to his third or fourth string RB and coaches/develops him to get 192 yards against UTSA.,,,,,with a bum shoulder.

  5. Why in the world would Zach Orr leave a DC position in the NFL for this program? I don’t care if we we’re the North Texas Fight Zach Orrs playing at Orr Family Field, he’s not making that move.

  9. It’s all just really depressing. I’m hurting for the players. I want us to be relevant but it just feels like there’s something missing every year we’re somewhat decent. The year we beat Arkansas I was thinking “finally- this is it. We’re gonna break through. Everyone will start taking us seriously. Here come the big recruits.” Then back to back heartbreaking losses. Is UNT football just doomed to be the low to mid tier punching bag for schools to beat up on? This is my first post for multiple years in here and I’m just curious to know serious thoughts: What are we missing? What is preventing this program from going on a Boise State/UTSA/Cincy/UCF run? Is it just the complacency and history of losing? Or is it more tangible like facilities/money towards recruits? I’m afraid if we don’t figure it out we’re really going to get left in the dust with NIL taking off. (Sorry for the long post, just processing what has turned into a disappointing season)

  11. Honestly, what we are missing is a billionaire donor. While we have a large alumni base, the majority donate $0 and we don't have enough big donors to make a significant impact. I hate seeing that school we made fun of for buying their way into a P5 now possibly buying their way into a playoff spot.

  12. Defensive recruiting/coaches have taken a backseat to offensive recruiting/coaches. I truly hope Morris quickly figures out that defense is necessary for winning. We just can’t rely on out scoring teams. I also hope Morris starts protecting the defense with his offensive play calls. When the defense just got off the field after a long drive by the other team, don’t be so aggressive with long passes that have us turning the ball over in less than a minute. Try to burn some clock and sustain a drive allowing the defense to rest and get adjustments from coaches.

  15. My bad. I think I goggled the date and got a previous year. Still somewhat puzzled about a verbal commitment during the live early signing period. Maybe he has been committed for sometime but we just learned of it. On another note, a year late for the Dallas Wings to get the #1 pick (Caitlin Clark). I'm happy about Page Bueckers though.

  16. After doing a little research, it is my opinion that Benedetto needs to get the job. The dude runs a 4-2-5, and this season his defense has not given up more than 28 points in any game. That includes NIU's 16-14 win over Notre Dame, and NIU's 24-17 loss to NC State. Benedetto's defense is only giving up an average of 284.4 yard per game and 18.5 points. for comparison, if UNT's defense didn't allow more than 28 points in any game this season, the Mean Green would be 7-3 right now. And that's with Morris' questionable discissions like passing up points, onside kicks after the first drive of the game, and not having a jumbo package in goal line situations.

  17. Keeping Caponi shortened the leash on Morris. He basically wasted a full year of resources, personnel, and time by keeping a DC that should have been fired last year. Why should I trust that he can make the right decisions? Next year better be a full turn around or he needs to be gone too.

  18. I have said this before.... The problem with NT Football is it has a Offensive Coordinator as a Head Football Coach. Morris will be back next year regardless of the outcome of the next two games. I hope he can pull his sh_t together over the off season. At this point though all I see is a repeat of the last coaching staff....prove me wrong Eric.

  20. Felt like a road split from the Minnesota/McNeese swing would be a success. Glad we clinched that, but feels like the team is more than capable of 2-0 there.

  21. Agree with 2-4. Don’t particularly care which system they run as long as it fits the personnel available and can confuse the opponent. I think a four man front isn’t a panacea. Generally we have trouble with DL depth, especially with any size. Probably easier to recruits quality LBs, which means a 3-4. I wonder if Charlie Strong still has the desire to coach. I don’t think he was coaching this season. Definitely a proven DC.

  22. Good post and the simple answer is we need football to emulate what UNT basketball is doing. UNT basketball has better recruiting, coaching and significantly more NIL support.

Cowboys to face old friend https://www.americanpress.com/2024/11/15/cowboys-to-face-old-friend/ “I’m happy with our effort at Alabama and how we competed,” said McNeese head coach Will Wade. “We are in for a tough game Monday with North Texas, they are big and physical. They play tough defense and it will be a test for us.”

  32. People need to re-read this. At this point I’m of the opinion that Morris needs to go too. This firing is scapegoating a problem of his own making. We don’t play a championship calibre style of football in any of the 3 phases. Our special teams are flat out atrocious - I mentioned this early in the season as well. They just don’t get scrutinized because our focus is all on the historically disastrous defense we’ve fielded. We need to clean house. Caponi isn’t enough.

  35. Pat Cobbs needs a more prominent role. If he wants it. If not, and all he ever wants is to coach RBs, then he should have a job here for life. I’m all for grooming Cobbs into a HC and giving him the keys to the university already. His unit is consistently awesome and we’re down to the 5th freaking stringer.

  36. Yes, as NT fans we have seen several years of this style play. But for other teams, and their fans, they don't really understand what is happening. Their team struggles and the game becomes difficult for them to score. They blame their own players and coaches, usually with no credit to us.

  38. Jeremiah Johnson from La Tech. My #1 choice no to high school DC, they have no clue to the portal and I don’t feel a great source of talent judgement. Carthel I don’t think would come for a coordinator role even for 200k more. He was my choice for HC after SL. if Johnson tells us no, look at the D2 level. D2 coordinators are more aggressive recruiting and better judges of talent. They are constantly trying to sell “snow to eskimos”. Bringing in particular kids from the portal with 1/2 schollys and inadequate facilities filling holes left by transfers etc. They are hustlers AND they won’t be afraid to come in with a hot seat coach, because of the confidence in their own skill . They will be more aggressive, But will adapt to the personnel they have in the cupboard. I’m also not sure we are getting any value from our recruiting gurus and support staff and we may need to revamp in that area for sure. Question our dfw high school coaches and get their recommendations for a DC We can do a little research in the D2 level and save money on a search committee lol

  40. I’ll say this as well - There are people in my group of 20+ season ticket holders that have held them since 2003 questioning if they’ll renew next year because it’s not fun anymore. It feels hopeless after 20+ years. They’re just saying, I’ll keep supporting basketball because at least we have a real program and coaching staff that we can all believe in through wins and losses. No one believes in the football coaching staff - except Patrick Cobbs - who we might as well elevate to HC. He’s the only one that actually produces and legitimately gives a shit about UNT. This program’s situation is dire whether the AD realizes it or not.

  41. Coach Mitchell was not only a great Coach but a great Man. It was an honor playing for his teams for 3 years. We do need to remember what he accomplished in his years at UNT in Football, and thank him for the hundreds of young athlete's he influenced in a positive manner and made them better citizens in their future.

  42. My two cents: this termination was obviously needed, to the painful point where I don't think you need to to see how the fans feel about Caponi.

  43. @BigWillie I got there later during the signing period, so I only saw a few obvious Mean Green fans. That included one fan who repeatedly assured me we would finish 7-5. However, I chatted with some folks and it sounded like there was a really good turnout. Apparently there was a long line of fans right at 2:00 for signatures. There was a large table area for mini helmets, and there weren't many North Texas helmets left when I bought one. That was encouraging too.
