So do I redirect the thousands of dollars in donations per year to Athletics MGSF and special projects to NIL??? Or am I and others like me supposed to also now fund the players “salaries” on top of all this while the coaches and administrators make millions in salary? The whole system is unsustainable and quite bluntly, F’d. Make the schools themselves pay for this shit. UNT has a like 600 million dollar a year budget. Pay salaries, put players on contracts, and call it a University marketing expense. Also I’m a fan - I’ll complain about or praise anything I want at any time. Stop blaming our fans. It’s old and tiresome and I’ll continue to call it out every time I see this line of idiocy.24 points

UNT is 5-2. One game away from bowl eligibility with 5 to play. The offense is one of the best in the country. Yes the defense is struggling. But there are some key defenders that were available at Memphis. With complete roster turnover this team is ahead of schedule. At some points on offense last night this team had 5 true freshman out there. And still went toe to toe with a Memphis team that had over a million more to spend in NIL and roster building. Below is a pre fall depth chart. All players in red were unavailable for Memphis game. #GMG show up for homecoming and cheer on a fun team.12 points

Without player contracts i won't be donating to player salaries. I contribute my share already. Until it becomes a binding agreement and not an annual auction, I'll be staying away from NIL12 points

I guess I'm crazy enough to think that the head coach making a million per year and the AD making high six figures with an empire of VPs under him should earn THEIR money. I don't get paid by the university to perform, they do. I grew tired of the "do your part to make us successful" speech in the RV days. North Texas has advantages other schools with less don't have and they figure it out. I'm sure we'll get a lecture from the AD when 18K (reported) show up to a half empty stadium on Saturday. But hey, 11K butts in seats is pretty good considering "A, B, C.....name your moral victory here." Let's use the standard for alumni and fans that we have to use for on field performance. Should've beaten Memphis. But you didn't. Call me when we're ranked, call me when we win 11 games....like UTSA has done recently. Do their alumni and fans give more than we do?12 points

I believe it was time for Seth to move on but it's hard to understand why some of you will be so happy that he was fired from OU.12 points

Will never give to NIL and I will bitch all I want, Alumni haver earned it over the past 6 decades. I will still give to the University, but I will not pay players who are already spoiled with free tuition, housing, training, etc.. Why pay them when the majority will have no honor to the university? Just watch Chandler Morris is using UNT as springboard and more than likely he will be on his 5th school in 6 years come 2025 Season, if he stays I would be shocked. When players have no loyalty to the university, why should alumni pay up to support them. AD and staff are being paid a ton for little upgrade in quality for the $$$$ being spent10 points

I think Eric will fix the defense this off-season. He really wants to win.10 points

Man if I ripped off two 75-yard TDs I would be insufferable. Asking for a little NIL isn't nearly close to egregious haha9 points

To the OP -- what's the exact dollar figure I have to donate in order to have an opinion on my college's football team?8 points

About the only way I can see myself being a part of NIL would be through purchasing player branded merchandise, as NIL was meant to be. If I had a business I wanted to advertise, I would gladly sign a player to do it. But I don’t like the collectives, because they are non-transparent. We don’t have a clue what our own collectives are doing. I have no clue to which players that money goes or how that is decided. I give to the scholarship fund because I know it goes to fund the player scholarships. If we don’t keep giving there, the university has to make up that money from somewhere. That likely means something else gets money taken away. And fans even give enough to fund all the needed scholarships as it it. Not even close.7 points

Agreed. You know how some people complain that we only beat bad teams? Before SL got here, we were one of those teams. He raised the bar here.7 points

No one is more anti NIL than me, but it seems like maybe he’s letting UNT area businesses know that he’s open to offers.7 points

Who are you calling Old Timers? I like Morris, and I would be really happy if we take one of the next two. We are getting better, and for once, we are really better.7 points
-
The old timers on this board are never happy. We have turned the page and improved since last season. Has the defense improved, yes. Is it great, no. The offense is better with Chandler Morris at QB. The teams playing hard and bought in. We're one win away from being bowl eligible with a bunch of young guys. The future is bright. Smile a little, it's ok.7 points

Frustrating loss! Really felt like it was winnable through the 3rd quarter and then Memphis got smart and went back to the run. Still drinking the green flavorade this morning, Tulane almost shit the bed against Rice this weekend, we can get these guys at home.7 points

He was just an expensive insurance policy. He was never going to beat out the returning starter. He will only play if the starter goes down but what a nice option to fall back on. I'm happy with the QB we have now!6 points

Yes, is NIL taking away potential donations from Facilities and Master Plan goals for the Program? I'd rather have buildings that serve generations of fans and players than give $ to a great player that will probably transfer to a P4 anyway.6 points

Do you guys realize most of the schools at the G5 level get most of their wins from teams with losing records? I'm just making sure everyone understands the reality here. Ranked in order of AAC standings - 1. Army - 7-0 with 1 win against a team with a winning record - FCS Lehigh 2. Navy - 6-0 with 1 win against a team with a winning record - Memphis 3. Tulane - 5-2 with 1 win against a team with a winning record - Louisiana 4. Memphis 6-1 with 1 win against a team with a winning record which was us! 5. Charlotte was 3-4 with 0 wins against teams with a winning record 6. NT - 5-2 with 0 wins against teams with a winning record 7. ECU - 3-4 with 0 wins against teams with a winning record I will stop researching the rest of AAC as you can see no G5 teams beat many teams with winning records. If we can beat either Tulane or Army, we'll be right there in with the same number of wins - one - against teams with winning records.6 points

I’ll only speak for myself when I say I definitely don’t hate watch this team. I’ve just recently realized that I’ve now followed this program for 26, going on 27 years. I was 17 years old when I started my fandom. I’m a middle aged man now. All that to say - the reason I’m so directly critical about not accepting horrid defense is because for maybe the 2nd or 3rd time in that entire fandom, I feel like we’re close to actually being able to do something special. Caponi & this ill fitting scheme are getting in the way of this. I don’t want us to waste Chandler Morris, like what happened to Mason in the end.6 points

I do not think less of anyone not giving 10K (or any amount) to anything associated with the program. I would even understand that it is rational to NOT give any money or time. I also understand when the SEC teams say "it just means more" is not just marketing speak. Those crazies, when compared to we rational fans here on gmg dot com who ask for some return on investment, will put football first, second, and third on the list. (Even in Memphis while driving from my hotel near campus, I saw houses with MSST flags decorating doorways. I saw a Tennessee one. I saw a couple of Memphis ones as well. It's top-of-mind to talk about their football program) Myself, being a crazy person, wrote on this board forever ago something to the fact that "we need someone to make the first move" We need a FedEx, or a T.Boone Pickens. Or someone. I've been trying to get rich and I promise I will donate a very irrational amount of money to this silly program to try to get some footballing wins. It is hard as hell to change a culture. You need passionate crazies who do not care about the glory, because there likely will not be any in their lifetimes. It is all the stuff at every level that needs to be consistently solid to great. Fan experience, marketing, game day, Hiring, firing, coaching, playing, supporting. I cannot control about anywhere close to any number of things that make a great experience. But I can give $10 bucks a month. (oh and yes, last year I was going to start the MGN NIL and do it very transparent and was fully ready for it to simply be $400 bucks total in the bank but I saw they fired the LTTNIL CEO who was unfit for the gig and the other NIL started up so I sat back)5 points

The premise of this thread is silly. So someone who pays for season tickets to the Dallas Cowboys but does not send additional money to reimburse players has no right to complain about the Cowboys' performance? I would say that a fan who only watches on TV still has a right to complain--that's what fans do. Whether those within the organization choose to listen to such fans is entirely up to them.5 points

If I'm a coach, I'm keeping a running spreadsheet of all transfers out and their performance elsewhere. Specifically those who went p4. Maclin, Gumms, Rogers. From accolades to benchwarmers.5 points

Yes, I wrote a check for 50k back in January. We need more big checks coming in for us to have a chance at continued success with Coach Morris at the helm. I'm not saying everyone can afford to give 50k, but most people can afford to give something.5 points

Seth played on the 2000 National Championship Team at OU. He screw himself and to some degree NT when he was interviewing for the Kansas job and kind of left NT hanging during that decision period while we were preparing for the New Mexico Bowl. He's not hurting except for his ego.5 points

but but we should not fire a Coordinator in the middle of the season, it would hurt the team and recruiting. Same old small time UNT thinking5 points

We're still in the hunt for the conference championship. Do I like our chances against Army? No. That game terrifies me. But, except for Tech, we've been competitive in every game. I'm so tired of this board bitching.5 points

Save all that “But we’re 5-2, anyone would have taken that at the beginning of the season” BS. Everyone would have taken 5-2 because of how piss poor the defense was last year. Well, this team isn’t 6-1 because that defense is STILL piss poor. We scored 44 points…FORTY FOUR…and lost by 8! There is no f’in silver lining around that 💩4 points

I think NIL/ PORTAL sucks...and doubt I'll ever contribute. I've bought season tickets for 25+ years.. even when I spent a 1+ years in the sandbox. If I can't bitch some please call me from the athletic department and I'll stop buying my 4 season tickets.4 points

Thank you. The "poll" is a predictable blame the fans approach in an effort to deflect the short-comings of the coaching staff.4 points

I agree that the current model is terrible... not only is it now standard for the AD to ask for money for the scholarship fund, season tickets, special 'campaigns', merchandise and God forbid a contract buyout when they realize they overpaid for a coach they now have to fire... the AD now has the crutch to say well, we just can't get a roster like other schools unless you contribute to NIL... I'm 100% behind everything i just bolded in your quote, quit the charade of acting like these kids aren't employees4 points

The money we owe him was deducted by his salary at OU. This firing hurt UNT because we will now be eligible to turn what we owe him to the full amount. This is not a good day for Seth or UNT athletics honestly. We both lose big time.4 points

How can you say that. Extremely painfully embarrassing to be fired like that in the middle of the season. He's not just another coaching hire at OU. His family has extremely close ties to the University. I believe they are big donors and his dad was a player on their national championship team.4 points

Early in my health care sales I inherited a sales district as their new manager. A few years later when I started my sales agency I decided that if my performance was based upon the performance of others I was going to hire the others. Whether they accept it or not head football coaches are held to the same standard and must replace non performers less they caused you to be replaced. I don't think Purdue's or O.U.'s offensive struggles will go away but it did make their O.C.'s accountable which is something our head coach seems unwilling to do as regards our D.C.4 points

Yeah missed a lot of things. Offense was big plays only and missed some drive sustainers that could have helped the scoreboard … and the defense. Had 5 straight 3-and-outs forced and the offense had a chance to get/extend the lead! So close. Need the same effort from both sides vs Tulane4 points

Have to wait for the whole season to compare season stats fully. But again, I’m not saying I love the dude but that J am trying to be sensible and not just fire off hot takes. Last year Cal and FIU were awful and we allowed 1000 yards against them. Everyone was better against us compared to their season averages. That’s bad. This year TTU, South, Memphis have all shown the capability of doing this kind of thing. Wyoming (terrible), Tulsa (bad) were held down. We didn’t make bad better. FAU was improved but I’m thinking that was a little bit of their QB having a bye and getting better. So yeah, I’m looking at the numbers. Sure. Numbers, though. Plural. Can’t just point to one and say “number go down = bad” and think I’m all done. Obviously everyone is free to enjoy the football program however you like. Some people like to hate watch their own squad. Cool, man. Some people also like sardines. That ain’t for me.4 points

You want to pull the plug on a 5-2 season? I’m obviously disappointed in the outcome last night, but I’m excited about the rest of the season. I’ve been waiting for football season since last December and we’re having a good season, why wish it away?4 points

I just love countering the idea that the real ideal North Texas fan is a grown man who spends his Saturday night mad online bitching when we lose. If I don’t fall in line with that archetype then I’m enabling the mediocrity, something or another. I want Caponi gone too. Just pointing out some information that I think most fans are unaware of.4 points
