  1. No one is more disgusted by the portal/NIL than me, but North Texas didn’t invent those things. Our program is just playing under the rules we are given. Based on the early results, the portal was a net positive for this team. Don’t know if we can do that every year, but 4-1 is pretty damn fun. Come on back.

  2. UNT's record over the last 20 years is 89-149. We are 1-6 in Bowl Games. We have had 4 winning seasons (that's being generous about a 7-7 finish). Our best players are poached every year. Why would that program have fans outside of the handful of diehards on this board, especially in this state and this area where people have options?

  3. It's pretty obvious....a lot of our fans are in the Portal. I know so many hard cores who no longer come to games. The portal/NIL was the final straw for many. And this is my 50th year as a fan....I plan on making it my last......as an "in person" fan.

  4. This is a lame excuse but I really think Tulsa being our 3rd home game in 4 weeks was a factor. Especially for fans who live an hour or more from Denton.

  5. Nice response. I'll keep an open mind. Obviously I still care or I wouldn't be on here. Go Mean Green!
    6 points
  6. Why would the Mean Green have fans? Because people who graduated from UNT have a stronger lifelong tie to UNT than any other school that plays football. Because even in down years it's still a good time to be at a college football game drinking beer, eating nachos and yelling obscenities when they run a draw play on third and long. Because the Green Brigade is great. Because we have a Victory Cannon. Because supporting a school you didn't attend more than you support your own school causes genital shrinkage. Everybody knows this. Ask Craig Miller. He knows it better than anybody.

  7. One whiff of adversity and our casual fans disappear. It's really annoying that we cant get people to care unless things are going perfect. Which is funny because those same people have no problem tuning in week after week to watch the Cowboys not win anything for 25+ years. Keep that same mindset for your alma mater.

  8. I gave up my season tickets this year because I just couldn't make it to town for many of the games this year, but I plan on renewing next year. I feel the same about the portal/NIL, but I really enjoy the games and am hopeful some guidelines get established soon to control the constant moving, etc...

  9. He doesn’t get it and won’t. He only pops up around here when it is some social issue he can wave his flag at. Stats are funny and easily manipulated. The number of youths with mental issues that decide to post delusional manifestos and go shoot up people and places is 100% higher than when I was a kid. I don’t have to link some bar graph to prove it, I’ve lived it.

  10. Here's how it went. We gained some big strides in terms of being competitive in the nil landscape of basketball. We still need help, the battle is not over, but we had a good day.

  11. Okay, but most people aren't going to do that. Especially, when they can watch all the games from home. I have to drive from Houston and after making the trip for SFA and Wyoming, I didn't feel like doing it for a third time in less than a month. IMO, if we had the Bye last week and played Tulsa this week, we'd have over 20K.

  12. UNT challenges start with a mostly uninterested student and alumni base. In addition to what you said and the Nil, which depressed many, it was also the starting weekend for the State Fair. I do think you are correct. Our general fanbase, not those on this board, for the most part, is not committed to being here for games. Whether watching it on TV is more convenient, 3 out of 4 consecutive Saturdays in Denton, or just having other things to do. But - Man oh man, that offense is getting fun to watch. Things may change.

  14. I"m definitely not against the kids, here. More about finding reasons to be better parents and stop misplaced blame on institutions (sometimes, it is well placed, but I dont' see that here). I'll read your links. Just my 0.02, but just because a society has gotten better about recognizing these things, doesn't mean we are better about addressing them. It strikes me more as, an avoidant generation. "I'll leave you alone to be you.", or "Okay bud, you do you just don't take away my peace." Sometimes that's what someone needs. Sometimes, it's not. Sorry for your pain, bud! This was not my experience growing up at all in the 70s and 80s. My parents, as well as theirs and the great-grands, were pretty good about sitting at tables and hearing people out, even if they didn't know how to respond. At least we all felt like we mattered and had a voice. Again, I'll read your links. But I think we can all still agree, more dinners together, less tablets. More convos and eye contact, less Netflix and internet.

  15. So sad. Prayers prayers comforting vibes sent. Make you wonder what teams like App State and Georgia Southern will do with their upcoming games. I get South Alabama weekly happening emails now and they added QR donation codes to help their conference mates. One for App State and one for Georgia Southern. Tough times for the Carolinas and Tennessee.

  16. Yet you know our schedule better than I do? Make it make sense. I would never visit a SMU, TCU, Texas Tech, or TAMU board in any season when we weren’t on their schedule. Popularity doesn’t mean you have a quality team on your schedule. Talking heads and Vegas odds makers are just selling product with their rankings & odds. We see upsets like Norte Dame getting knocked off by Northern Illinois every season. The upper echelons of SEC & Big 10 avoid playing the better G5 programs like the plague. Then hype beating the mediocre members of their conference that get beaten by them. More fans nationally probably always want to see Cowboys teams slightly below 0.500 than an undefeated Seattle team but that doesn’t mean the Cowboys are better. 🙄

  18. Here's why us going down there first.....really disappoints me. (as a season ticket holder) So far our home OOC schedule sucks. Partly because of some of the teams....and partly because of dates for games. We right now have two decent (not great) home OOC games....Evansville and Oregon State. Evansville is scheduled for November 5. (Election Night). Oregon State is scheduled for Nov. 25 (the Monday of Thanksgiving Week....when students will be gone). The other two home OOC games (so far) are Dec. 18 and Dec. 22 (Christmas break for students?---I know the 22nd will be). Also...the 22nd is a NFL Sunday. If that game is at night....the Cowboys (who might be way out of it by then) play Tampa Bay on Sunday Night Football. Anyway.....those two games are against Houston Christian and Miss. Valley State. I relish being there....but I also relish being there with as big a crowd, as possible. So far this home OOC schedule leaves a lot to be desired. And what I fully expect....when they finish it up...........we will have some games on better dates (when students are around and not on Election Night)......but those games will be against Div. II or NAIA schools. I hope I'm wrong on this. But as this schedule now sits.....it stinks. And for some odd reason....the Evansville game was moved from Nov. 16 (a Saturday) to Election Night. Makes no sense.....from our standpoint. I can see Evansville wanting it then.

  21. "North Texas: where people end up." That's a phrase I heard long ago when I ended up at North Texas State, and I suspect it really still rings true. People go to Texas, or Bama, or A&M, or Georgia, or Michigan, in part for the sporting scene and history. Not all their students, to be sure, but enough that there's a likelihood that the venues will be filled. Most students at UNT are probably not at their first choice school, and definitely aren't at their first choice school if the athletic social scene is a big driver for them. North Texas isn't quite the commuter school it used to be, but the attractions of almost anything else on a Saturday night can't be easily dismissed. Pick up UNT and stick it in East or West Texas, and you'd have more people at the game -- if only because there's nothing else to do.

  23. 🎯 In addition to our aggressively underwhelming overall record in both the regular season and in the postseason in the last couple of decades, the last time we had a head coach who left of his own accord and not because he was fired, his contract expired, he disagreed with the administration, or he was serving as an interim, was 1980. That coach was Jerry Moore. A head coach hasn't succeeded here and moved on to lead a bigger program thanks to that success in 44 years.

  25. I'm a fan. I go to games. Every home game, and a couple on the road, ever year. Since 1980. That won't change. I hope enough of us show up so that I can keep being a fan. I'm selfish that way. (In my opinion, marketing has had its best year. Amongst the regular excuses we offer on this board as to why no one attends our games, we have won 4 games out of 5. That should negate anything else for enough people to show up so that we don't have to ask the question: "where are the fans?" May be the best answer is: "there aren't enough." And that sucks.) GMG

  26. All of these things. I've been following NT sports for over 40 years and we've never had a lot of people consistently show up for games -- football or basketball. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, North Texas has never had a tradition of "school spirit." So, it's not surprising that alumni, let alone the general public in the DFW area don't bother to make it to the games. Maybe that will change at some point if we are consistently winning championships/bowls and beating ranked teams. But, realistically, I don't know how it does. They've been fun to watch the last couple of games. Even the defense.

  27. Where are the fans? Where is the administration that does not give fans a reason to attend athletics. We have the highest paid AD staff and Executive Admin but seeing less about the teams. I know from having a kid in her 2nd year that the students are getting better but until there is a major culture shift from the top, fans will not attend in the amounts us die hards would like to see. A huge issue also is the need for a FB Coach who wants to interact with fans and does not hide from pressers or cut them short or no show.

  28. I went to the watch party in Houston for Tech. Great people, bad game, and very empty. I get it- midday game. We have a reservation every game, but there were more Tech fans in the bar by chance. Their official watch party was 20 minutes away. If the university wants to actively promote the school, this is an easy win. I attended an VMI watch party. They work with alumni in the area to promote events across the country. They have travel engagement personnel that make away games fun. We need a SE chapter based out of Atlanta.

  44. The thing with SMU is that they also get this weird kind of sympathy from the CFB media for the Death Penalty. Even though it was well earned and well deserved, the media, both local and national act like it was just terrible. It’s like people thinking Bonnie and Clyde were some kind of heroes for robbing banks.
