If they are able to secure Memphis, Tulane, and a few others it'll be a decent media package. Content is still king and having the best G5 conference will have value in the marketplace. What that looks like on a $/team basis that's anyone's guess.6 points

This, and if we are being honest (and I hate to say this) we might actually owe SMU for doing us a solid by going to the ACC. Imagine if they were still in the AAC, all the talk would be about getting Tulane, Memphis, SMU, and 1 more. We wouldn't even be remotely considered.5 points

Listen, I get the disdain for SMU, but please don’t take the tribal mentality, all hate all the time approach. @SMU2006 isn’t being a jerk or pretentious or anything like that. If you look at everything he’s saying about this next shift in conference realignment, he’s actually advocating pretty hard for UNT’s success in all of this.5 points

Literally reposted tweets from verified journalists (not whack job clickbaiters) of the schools targeted for PAC expansion. It has been widely reported that UNLV/UN-Reno have political ties. https://www.reviewjournal.com/sports/unlv/pac-12-poaches-4-mountain-west-schools-unlv-left-out-3168075/ I never said it would be rebuilt into a power conference but rather the clear power of the G5 ensuring the PAC champion access to the playoff. No one knows what the PAC TV deal will be but with the war chest from the PAC departures and potential additions in major markets it could be enticing. I never once posted a dollar figure or even estimated what it could be. Anything else you need?5 points

Literally nothing I've said is BS. Its actually being real time corroborated in the media by multiple sources but if you want to spray diarrhea no one's stopping you I guess.5 points

Whether it’s been getting murdered by Tech, manhandled by UH, or getting embarrassed by SMU, the problem has always been that we get clobbered by teams that our fans want us to be able to compete with…and we don’t. We just roll over and get crushed. That’s beyond embarrassing. This isn’t including losses to SEC giants, but in state schools’ alums that we live near and work with everyday. Saturday was amongst the lowest points ever for me as a Mean Green alum. I got shit talked by an ACU alum…and had no reply. ACU.5 points

Fool me once... shame on you. Fool me for a 14th time, shame on me & everyone associated for the gross deriliction. Since he's been here, our defense has held the opponent to under 20pts once (to a very bad Temple team, at DATCU).5 points

Oregon State was playing #9 Oregon. We were playing #73 Texas Tech. Why the campaign to rationalize what we all saw on the field?4 points
-
8 teams isn't going to be enough content for a media partner. You have to get to 10 (minimum) but 12 would be ideal. That's where the Texas schools come in with markets and travel partners for Memphis/Tulane.4 points

Tulsa and Rice are probably dropping football in the next ten years. The PAC needs markets after they've secured the best MWC brands. Memphis, Tulane, UNT, and UTSA are the obvious choices. I'm sure they'd love to have UNLV but the political entanglements with UN-Reno are making that problematic. I do think UNLV will eventually find their way to break free of their ties to UN-Reno but they might be too late if the PAC lures 4-5 schools from the AAC.4 points

$mut will be our replacement in the AAC if were to go to the PAC....4 points

In terms of PAC realignment, UNT and UTSA are better as a packaged deal than standalone schools. Where UNT lacks in recent football success, UTSA can point to their two conference championships. Where UTSA lacks in basketball success, UNT can point to our recent NIT championship and NCAA tournament win. Taking both schools together expands the TV market footprint to both South Texas and DFW. Separated by 4 hours of drive time, we're natural travel partners. Plus a healthy rivalry is brewing between the schools that has room to grow as long as conference realignment doesn't muck it up.4 points

I want an AD to let a coach hire his own assistants. But.....if the HC wants to make an unproven DC, the highest paid assistant in G5, and give that guy a two year deal.....I wish the AD would at least say...."You sure about that?"4 points

It is my opinion that Saturday's game against Wyoming has become extremely critical to not only this season, but the immediate future for UNT football. This is how I see it: 1. Is the coaching staff capable of motivating players after such a humiliating loss? Can they come up with a game plan that will work against Wyoming? 2. Do we have players who possess the character to give their best effort every game and especially after such a big loss? 3. Will our fans show up to support the team after such a disastrous game against Texas Tech or will the attendance be minimal with only die hard fans attending? 4. Will the Athletic Department continue emphasizing attendance in unique ways even if we lose the game? I think we are at a crossroads. Another loss against a "name" school, especially at home, would spiral us downward in many areas despite a having a 2-2 record. The team would lose confidence in the coaches, recruiting and transfer portal prospects would look at us more negatively, fan support would diminish again, and the athletic department would have an even more difficult time selling our football program to prospective fans and donors. Also future conference opportunities would be damaged. There is a lot riding on this game. We MUST win on Saturday! GMG3 points

Tired of everyone blaming Caponi for this mess we find ourselves in. At some point Morris has to take some ownership as well.3 points

Oh please. They’re student athletes. Or at least they used to be. And they get a free education that costs mere mortals as much as $200k or more.3 points

Yeah I just like the idea of financially compensating kids who are sacrificing their time, energy, passion, and in some cases long-term health for the enjoyment of a bunch of middle aged men. If 10% keeps you away then be fine with losing.3 points

They'll do the same thing they did when the AAC lost teams to the Big 12. Go grab schools from another ESPN property (ex. Sun Belt/MAC)3 points

Memphis is 100% not a candidate for the ACC. Tulane is a fringe candidate and doesn't have the deep pockets to broker their way into the league. USF has a real chance but we're talking 8-10 years down the road. If you are any of these schools and the PAC is a sure thing you'd be foolish not to take it. It is going to be clearly the top G5 league and could garner a decent media rights package. You are also 99% assured of getting your league champion into the playoff. You can wait around for an ACC offer that is a ten year off prayer or you can take the sure thing now. If they are thinking strategically the PAC will extend offers to Memphis, Tulane, USF, UNT, and UTSA/Texas State. Crush the AAC and the MWC and turn their attentions to securing the media deal.3 points

Yes good offense that was cancelled out by bad defenses. Defense by year: 2016: 96 2017: 111 2018: 43 2019: 105 2020: 126 2021: 78 2022: 110 No bowl wins, no conference championships. Stats are nice, but people don't put stats in trophy cases. Isn't that what this whole thing is about? Winning championships and creating a winning culture?3 points

It may be a totally different story for those two. They, along with USF, are the projected top targets of the ACC when it loses it's power schools.3 points

CW is owned by Paramount. I don't know exact details of Paramount but it's a relatively new company that stems from a Viacom and CBS merger. CW has a streaming app and is looking for sports content. So is Amazon and so is Apple TV. There will be bids as the other major conferences are set for the next 5+ years. Also worth noting the current MWC deal is with CBS and Fox which has been at about $5 mil per school and expires when the new PAC is starts. This means they'll also be looking to fill some content and could buy a few games. And understood on your stance on the PAC. Obviously it has to all make sense financially. My concern is the top AAC schools will leave to the ACC when that collapses. I doubt we'll be included with SMU already being there. Then we're in CUSA 2.0. This is an opportunity to get out before that happens. We'll see how this plays out.2 points

I’ve often wondered what this place would’ve looked like if 2014 didn’t see us fall backwards to a 4-8 season. We had the momentum of McCarney turning us around and winning that HoD Bowl over UNLV. But Skladany retired, Derek Thompson graduated, and our recruiting just fell off a mountain. DMac never recovered. He started getting so frustrated about not getting any traction for recruiting and began to talk about how hard this job was. And then Portland State happened. But if he could’ve kept the momentum going in 2014, I believe things would’ve been much better for us in 2015 and he doesn’t get fired after the worst loss in modern college football history.2 points

Do you, or anybody else throwing around numbers of $6 million, realize the PAC2 has a media deal with CW for this season with an estimated value of $5-$9 million for each? Just two schools getting what you and others seem to think the PAC would get as a whole conference. It's not crazy to think the new PAC would get upwards of $10-$15 million per. Also, as it's been mentioned USF, Memphis, and Tulane are not in the same boat as us. They're favorites to join the ACC. They're also much further east than we are. The logistics are nowhere near the same and, as it's been said, they're getting full AAC shares. We are not.2 points

Looks like Memphis to the PAC is getting even more real.2 points

USA Today has moved us from a rank of 100 to 97. Maybe, if we had lost by a larger margin , we might have climbed even higher.2 points

And I expect the AD to take the pros and cons and weigh what's best. What I am predicting here is if the PAC can't lure Memphis/Tulane the contract is not going to be near the numbers being thrown around. Maybe $6-$8m, if I had to guess. We have to remember that the west is very sparsely populated and the big city centers are all in the B1G, ACC and Big12 (LA, Seattle, SLC, Phoenix, Denver, SF) without the central time zone teams what kind of deal can they get? Can the media partner offer the same level of coverage and exposure of ESPN? What will the travel expenses be? I'm not saying don't take a look at what's offered, but you have to run the numbers and see what makes sense, and that's going to be up to the AD to decide. Personally I find it a high hurdle to clear if they can't lure the top of the AAC as a block.2 points

Yes, I have been following UNT football for 50+ years and seen it many times, which is why this makes this game so critical. We have to change the perception to move forward and the only way to do that is to win these important games. This one is possible so we MUST take advantage of this opportunity.2 points

Seems like that’s Memphis and Tulanes approach as well.2 points

Thanks @Green Otaku, I stand corrected on UNT receiving half-shares for the entire time of the deal. I've searched but haven't been able to find published specifics on the ramp up schedule. Unfortunately this still doesn't solve the dilemma we're about to find ourselves in. What dilemma you ask? Exhibit A: House vs NCAA Whether we like it or not, schools directly paying athletes via NIL is coming in the very near future and could happen as early as next fall. As the above linked ESPN article states, this antitrust settlement is currently on hold as the the judge in the case waits for both the plaintiffs and the NCAA to address her concerns. The lawyer for the plaintiffs has already signaled they are fine making the requested changes, so now we wait for the NCAA to agree. The NCAA has very little leverage so I expect them to begrudgingly agree. So what does this mean for us? Once this antitrust settlement takes hold, schools will have the green light to pay their athletes directly through NIL dollars. Those NIL dollars will come from revenue generated from ticket sales and you guessed it... TV media deals. For G5 teams, the vast majority of the NIL money will come from their TV media deals. Now let's consider the fact that UNT, UTSA, Rice, Charlotte, FAU, UAB, and Army are currently receiving half-shares in the AAC while the other seven AAC schools (Memphis, Tulane, USF, Temple, Tulsa, ECU, & Navy) are receiving full-share revenue deals. We're essentially playing in a two-tiered G5 conference for the foreseeable future, and unfortunately UNT is in the bottom tier when it comes to revenue share and being able to pay our athletes. Talk about a huge competitive disadvantage within our own conference! To further my point, read this article titled: TEMPLE AD FACES CRITICAL DECISIONS AS REVENUE SHARING APPROACHES2 points

Morris listened to Caponi in the 2023 off season when I presume Caponi said he could rebuild the defense to fit the system. I have a few things I would like to point out. 1) First, Morris not firing Caponi after season 1 is low risk. Caponi is on a 2 year contract and if it doesn't work out, reload in 2025 with a new coordinator. You don't disrupt the pipeline of players coming in recruit and transfer portal wise, and you try to make it work. I don't fault Morris for this decision. 2) Firing Caponi after last season could do a couple of things. It would make any potential DC leery of taking the spot if they think they won't get a couple of seasons to try to turn things around. As HC, Morris needed to afford a second season to Caponi. 3) Firing him midseason will not help the morale of the locker room 4) We're in our third non-conference game going into our fourth 2-1. If there is any time to try to figure stuff out it is now, prior to conference play. I want to see how this defense does in conference play. I am not defending the horrible defensive performances over the past season and a quarter. We have to consider all angles of this and it is still very early in the season.2 points

Some of these are obvious issues. Stuff like targeting the community college transfers and 1st generation students has no bearing on success. We want a Tillman Fertitta. Did his parents go to college? Here's another issue you're missing outside of lowering admission standards and being the value choice. We are sending what should be our premiere schools elsewhere. Law School? UNT Dallas. Health Sciences Center? Fort Worth. Why are those not IN Denton? We're so focused on building up our system schools that the primary campus is suffering. Those schools being at the primary campus would elevate the perception of the University of North Texas. Follow that up by raising admissions standards and erase the notion of being a value college and you'd start elevating the quality of graduates. I don't know how you correct the issue of sending Law and Medical schools elsewhere. You can correct the low admissions standards and great value walmart brand label today. It needs to happen. Otherwise the UNT degree will continue to be viewed as average.2 points

As was I, Clement and Dillard were automatic. They went 10-3 and won their bowl game that year. Texas Tech won’t be winning 10 games this year.2 points

If the PAC wants to get laughed at and not be looked at seriously, they’ll add us and some Texas spares that don’t move the needle at all nationally, including UTSA, Texas State, UTEP, or Rice. They need to get the best of the west and leave it there. We have as good of a setup as North Texas has ever been allowed to have, except for SMU not being in the same conference. The PAC with OSU, WSU, Fresno, SDSU, Boise, and CSU is a solid start, but adding in UNLV, Nevada, AFA, and Utah State would be pretty smart, and getting Gonzaga and St. Mary’s into the league for hoops would be a great league.2 points

Memphis, USF, and Tulane are full-share members of the AAC so they are hesitant to move without knowing more about the estimated TV deal and how much they can expect to make. However UNT, UTSA, RICE are only receiving 50% of the AAC TV media money until 2034. 10 years at half-share is a lot of lost revenue. The new PAC can offer new members full-share when the future media deal is established, as an incentive to leave the AAC.2 points
