Beat Wyoming to finish 3-1 in OOC play. We would have all signed up for that a month ago. No matter how bad the 1 loss was.14 points

Squeak out wins against Wyoming, Tulsa, Temple, and UTSA. By some miracle we make a crappy local bowl and get blown out. Caponi is fired and we all continue to debate why we support this subpar program that we have all given money too.8 points

You have 3 monsters that play the D-line and 3 fast linebackers that hit like Mack trucks. Then at least 2 safeties that read the run and become a heat seeking missile. The power programs that run this defense have all this and are 3-4 deep at each position. Very little drop off when an injury occurs or just when a starter is out for a rest break. UNT just doesn’t have monsters on the D-line that require double teams and can pressure the QB or crush run lanes. Our linebackers often have to fight off an O-Lineman because our D-line is being single blocked. Our safeties are late and diving at ankles. Even when our linebackers and safeties make a tackle it’s 5-10 yards up the field (because of our under performing D-line). On passing plays we are ineffective with blitzes because our D-line doesn’t require doubling so the blitz gets picked up. Competent QB’s have all day and our corners and safeties can’t cover forever. I know Morris has said he chose a DC that runs the 3-3-5 because he struggled against teams that did it well. We just don’t have the monsters up front that make this defense work effectively. He needs to understand this fast and change the scheme with the DC or get a new DC that will stop the run first (4-2-5).7 points

The 3-3-5 has never been consistently successful at any level and yet many still choose to run it. The 4-3 is much better and allows the defense to actually get a push upfront7 points

We are the 3rd largest university in Texas. The problem we have is a brand problem. Or, lack there of. If we’re not going to improve our brand by consistently winning, then we need to do everything we can to find other ways to do it. Being associated with the most known brands is the way we should go. That’s probably the PAC. And likely more money. If we haven’t knocked on their door, then I give up.7 points

Morris is a good coach (Offensive Coordinator). I believe that. The problem is, we fired a dude like him... only that guy was a better OC & HC. 😢6 points

True, although a limited travel budget can make it much more dangerous!6 points

We don’t have the donors. We have a few donors that have enough money to gain access to the decision makers, but no donors that have enough money to BE the decision makers. This school hasn’t produced a Boone Pickens or a Tillman Ferttita or a group of donors that bankroll conference re-alignment. We don’t have anybody that hates losing and has the money to do something about it. That’s on the university. The cancer is the university lowering admission standards, selling a “best value” degree, marketing toward commuters, community college transfers, first generation college students, international students, liberal arts, music and freaks. The one demographic we don’t market toward is the one demographic that comprises 99% of athletic donor money. The school actively tells them to go elsewhere. This school is perfectly fine with picking up the cutting room floor for pretty much every other school in the state. That’s the cancer.6 points

Today is the perfect reason that our alumni, students, faculty, sports fans in the area, and the local sports media just flat out don’t care about us. When we do have a chance to gain their attention, 99% of the time, we crap the bed against a team that we need to compete with. This is not pointed at playing UT, OU, A&M, LSU, Bama, etc…it’s getting prison raped by SMU, UH, Tech, UTSA, etc…losing to Texas teams that people know and went to school at. UNT grads get embarrassed so badly to go to work, church, school, or anywhere that know we went to UNT and just laugh at us. For men especially, it just gets old, so they walk away. And rarely, if ever, come back.6 points

To be clear - we’re 100% blaming Morris for the defensive mess. Caponi didn’t hire and retain himself.5 points

Everyone relax. We can’t go 13-1 unless we lose a game. 🤘5 points

I am too. Just pointing out blocking has been an issue. I'm not the first to point it out and I won't be the last. This guy has noticed it too. Wonder if he knows a thing or two about blocking.5 points

I'm not sure why adding Wazzu and OSU to this group will make it certain to have a significantly larger media deal than the MWC already has. Contracts are more about actual eyeballs (and subscribers) than markets these days. Yes, they will have more but enough more for an increase beyond what they have now - I'm not sure. Maybe yes, maybe no. In either case it won't be a lot. If I'm Memphis, Tulane, USF or any other AAC school, I want to see actual dollars being quoted by actual media sources and not Pac-x estimates!4 points

We are not a “real” D1 program. We just got skull drug by Texas Tech…not Alabama, not Oregon, not Clemson, we got beat down by a team that should have lost to Abilene Christian. Don’t let their performance against Caponi’s defense fool you, that is not some powerhouse we just lost to. Many of you think that NIL and the transfer portal have created a divide between the “big boys” and everyone else…we were well on the other side of that divide before NIL Memphis just put Florida State at 0-3…and, no, it doesn’t matter that Florida State is down right now, we would have lost to them by 30+ today. There is a reason people mention Memphis in realignment talks and not us. We may share a league, but we are not the same. It pains me to say all this, but nobody who isn’t on North Texas’ payroll could see things any differently.4 points

This rebuilt PAC will be the strongest and most valuable G conference, which in turns will lead to earning the 5th auto-bids most years and enhanced media exposure. North Texas would be stupid not to join if offered. Just think of what the AAC will become once they lose the programs and markets the PAC is targeting.4 points

We give them the benefit of the doubt, go to DATCU or watch them on ESPN+ . Bring home a W, and be one more game closer to being bowl eligible. I have done this too long to give up now...GMG!4 points

I don't know who the safety was, but on tech's very first TD, I told my wife that the slot receiver was going to run a slant route and he was going to be open. It was 3rd and 10 so they pretty much have to pass it. What does the safety do? He steps up for some reason anticipating a run and leaves the area wide open for an easy TD. What the douchebag is the point of the 3-3-5? They have no idea what they're doing. The coaches, nor the players. Why the douchebag would you step up on a 3rd and 10 at the goalline?? The players are badly coached with no game sense. If you're going to run the 3-3-5 and get baited that easily, you might as well just have an actual LB or DT up there in the first place, and maybe have a chance at getting pressure on the QB once in a while. This one was egregious because it was a very obvious pass situation, they got baited all night long when it wasn't so obvious and were torched, over and over again.4 points

If my last 15+ years of following the mean green have told me anything… the same place we have always been.4 points

LOL. UNT isn't going anywhere up. Why would the PAC want us? Losing football program, apathetic fan base, no baseball team. I'm shocked this is even a discussion after today's embarrassment.4 points

Tired of everyone blaming Caponi for this mess we find ourselves in. At some point Morris has to take some ownership as well.3 points

Not to dampen the enthusiasm, but if it's possible, this team (Wyoming) is probably worse on offense than we are on defense. Through 3 games Points per game - 11.3 Passing yards per game - 115 Rushing yards per game - 87 So please, if we do not hold them to less than 225 yards and 14 points, don't start with the "oh, the defense is stepping up" or "wow, Morris and Caponi might be turning it around".3 points

You don’t get more defensive talent you could have Buddy Ryan coaching the defense and it wouldn’t matter much. Still the fault of the staff but I don’t see a quick fix.3 points

It's not like he's tried to distance himself from the hire. I don't get the implication that he doesn't own the hire.3 points

Fool me once... shame on you. Fool me for a 14th time, shame on me & everyone associated for the gross deriliction. Since he's been here, our defense has held the opponent to under 20pts once (to a very bad Temple team, at DATCU).3 points

YES! I'm not saying "No way" but rather listen to the pitch and then check the real numbers.3 points

My biggest problem with playing the 3-3-5 is that you have to have the right personal to run it and they have to have experience in it. With NIL and the transfer portal, it will always be a revolving door. I think you have to play a really basic defense that you can plug and play guys that transfer in. It is a gimmick defense that we don't have the players or experience to run correctly. I can't believe that Caponi couldn't run a basic 4-3 if he wanted to. It doesn't matter if our defense confuses people when they are running up and down the field at will on us. Morris needs to set in and make this decision. Keep Caponi until the end of the year but make him change the defensive scheme. We still have plenty of games left to have a successful season but waiting on this defense to come together isn't working.3 points
-
Yes, the 3-3-5 was badly exposed by Tech over and over. Players out of position and biting on QB ball fakes that allowed receivers to run past them and become wide open. It's past time to shelve this defense and try another defensive scheme (and coordinator).3 points

College Athletics is not all about wins and losses. It's also about who you associate with in a Conference. It's why $mut paid their way into the ACC. Vanderbilt is hardy a football power (having just lost to Georgia State) but they do have an SEC logo on their field. If leaving the AAC for the PAC makes financial sense and puts us with Boise instead of Charlotte then I'm in.3 points

I thought this was going to talk about Wyoming's offense 🤔 ... obviously I'm not a gambler.3 points

Somebody convince me we have improved since SL....... Cause at this point in time we haven't.3 points

Could be wrong but I'm more willing to give them the benefit of the doubt due to the injuries.3 points

You need good blocking for that. If Eric Morris is dialing up the screens and quicker plays, it's likely because he doesn't believe the line can hold up. If SFA is any indication, he's not wrong. Our O line has struggled.3 points

Our defense will be our defense. What can’t happen is our offense to $hit their pants. Morris needs to slow it down some and try to go vertical with the passing. Too much swing passes IMO. Let those guys run routes and let Chandler read them. He made the correct reads against USA, so don’t take that away from him like I feel EM did this game. Too many quick hitting passes that seemed to be predetermined. Trust in Chandler3 points

Money is the huge thing here. CRod elaborated on a lot of great points. For me, my biggest questions are: 1. IF UNT gets an invite, will they get full share or partial? If partial, for how long? In the AAC, 10 years of 50% revenue kinda sucks, but better than any other G6 conference 2. Will they help UNT pay their way out? 3. Our Olympic sports will definitely benefit from going into the PAC. Women’s volleyball/ soccer/softball, tennis and golf program - would be a wonderful opportunity.3 points

This x 1,000. I feel Seth had taken us as far as he could. He should have been let go sooner, but, staying true to the NT cancer, we allowed him to do just well enough to keep his job until it was too late to get a good coach. As to the original point in this thread, Defense. Wins. Championships. It doesn't matter how many points YOU score, if you don't stop the opponent, it is a moot point. It seems like too many of these offense "geniuses" don't understand defense, and think you can just outscore everyone. Hire a defense first coach, and let him hire offensive coordinators who can work with what they have until they get the personnel they want in. On another, somewhat related note, I think this air raid BS is about played out. I think coordinators will start moving back to a balanced offense. It blows my mind how we continue to REFUSE to have a wishbone package.3 points

After missing a short field goal everything that could go wrong for UNT did go wrong. We are not that bad and TT is not that good. This is football , and when bad things happen a game can snowball down hill in a hurry. I am optimistic that we will turn things around Saturday.3 points

If the PAC wants to get laughed at and not be looked at seriously, they’ll add us and some Texas spares that don’t move the needle at all nationally, including UTSA, Texas State, UTEP, or Rice. They need to get the best of the west and leave it there. We have as good of a setup as North Texas has ever been allowed to have, except for SMU not being in the same conference. The PAC with OSU, WSU, Fresno, SDSU, Boise, and CSU is a solid start, but adding in UNLV, Nevada, AFA, and Utah State would be pretty smart, and getting Gonzaga and St. Mary’s into the league for hoops would be a great league.3 points

Lets be realistic here. Things we can't afford: 1. $20 Million Expansion of the athletic center 2. NIL funds to attract good players 3. Baseball 4. Buyout of Caponi's current contract 5. Buyout of Morris contract 6. Exit fee to leave the AAC for a new conference3 points

You do known that the PAC just grabbed the MWC's best teams, right?3 points

I watched Texas State at ASU the other night and TSU should’ve won. Close game, both teams looked evenly matched. NT would’ve gotten smoked by both teams. My mean green fandom flame is burning as dim as ever. There’s always one day, next time, next year, blah blah blah. Oh well, I don’t wear any of my UNT gear like I used to, either.3 points

There’s a reason that we can’t sell out a 30k stadium in the middle of Football Country with an enrollment of over 40k and local alumni over 300k. People don’t want to be associated with losers and apathy. And that’s our history for the last 45 years.3 points
