UNT announced the football captains for the 2024 season. Solid group of men! Any surprises to y’all? Jordan Brown - LB - #8 Roderick Brown - DL - #10 Ridge Texada - CB - #5 Chandler Morris - QB - #4 Damon Ward Jr. - WR - #8 Landon Peterson - OL - #72 Jaylen Smith - LB - #365 points

As an outsider looking in, I'm somewhat surprised by Landon Peterson. A first year one-and-done transfer, when we have longtimers like Jett Duncan? Not doubting that he deserves it, just somewhat surprised.5 points

I bet UNLV is thankful that they don't have to give Barry Odom (a dude UNT MOST CERTAINLY could have hired) a "hall pass" after taking them from 5-7 the previous season to 9-4 last year. The hall pass caught fire when we lost to FIU last year. It was incinerated when we failed to make a DC change after a Ron-Mendoza-level defensive performance. Nah bro. No hall pass. Last year was a failure, even for a new coach. Win Now.5 points

By the time he had a bad season, Littrell had built up enough cred with the seasons that he had shown the fanbase that he could win with the right QB and the right OC. Once he lost Harrell, the wheels fell off, especially after Mason Fine (or what was still left of him after the beating he took) left. But by then, he had an extension and wasn't getting fired until it was deemed affordable to buy him out. And when he was let go of, we went the UNT Route again, hiring the next up-and-comer that just also happened to be cheaper to hire than someone like Odom or Fuente.3 points

Drink some coffee, it's too early to be this mad lol. But yes, win now. The roster is shaped to how Morris wants it. Time for him to prove that last year was an anomaly.3 points

I know we're just one season in....but I can't help but look at the two and think how similar they are. Both played at TT, (oops. I mean they both DIDN’T play at TT but Mike Leach and stuff) Air Raid guys. OC at P5 school. We knew all that coming into it. But their coaching results are fairly similar too.... Before Morris's big 4th year at IW, he was a below .500 coach in three years. He then took an all world QB and rode him to a big season. His only real success was when he had one of the top QBs in the nation. Sound familiar? Taking a step back at the whole of his career, Morris has actually only had one good year in five. Littrell had two good years in seven. So three good years in 12 between the two. Combined post season record of 1-7. (SL 0-5 in bowls, EM 1-2 in the playoffs) So there's a pretty small sample of winning that gets highlighted over an otherwise mediocre overall result. It seems like we're once again sitting around waiting for our HC to find the next Cam Ward/Mason Fine. So again...we get transfer QB after transfer QB to hopefully be the 2nd coming (and I will give Morris credit on Chandler Rogers, he was a good find, not Cam Ward/Mason Fine level, but he was good. But like Littrell late in his tenure here, he couldn't keep a top player in Denton. Also, even with this good QB, he wasn't able to win consistently. With the SL/EM mentality, you have to have a near record breaking QB to overcome everything else)….because, as always here the past several years: "defense shmefence" The formula here seems to be try to score 40 per game and have one of the best QBs in the nation on your team so he can throw for 4500 yards. If you don't you're not going to win. Not sure what Morris will do differently....but this sure seems like a really important year for him. Looking at last years record, the positive is we were in most games, lost plenty by one score. So if we can get all these new players to gel, and if Chandler Morris is the guy (and stays healthy), maybe Morris breaks the trend. But to do this, he is going to have to break the other trend we've seen here since 2016, one that Littrell was a master at. He is going to have to beat some teams he is not supposed to beat. Seth Littrell pretty much NEVER did that. Eric Morris is going to HAVE to.2 points

Exactly. And, you don’t need to give away any info to advertise the team. At this point, you can barely hear crickets. If you can’t get fans to be excited about the team, what makes you think they’ll be encouraged to go2 points

Somebody talk me off the ledge because I'm seeing 4-8. In thirty years of fandom this is the least I've ever known about a team.2 points

Defense gave away the Navy game? That's the one loss I would put on the offense. In addition to the 2 turnovers, we turned the ball over on downs when we failed to score from the 1 on our first drive. And on our second drive Trey Cleveland dropped a TD pass that hit him in the chest, forcing us to kick a FG. It should have been 14-0, but instead was 3-0. That was the game.2 points

These are unlockable ultimate team players you can get in a pack you have to pay for. JaDeveon Clowney is also an 87 there are only 13 players rated higher than 87 (highest being 90) none of which are DL to this date in ultimate team mode it's not really a slight to him at all.2 points

Personally, I thought it was the least NT thing ever. Every coaching hire we had made previously (during my time following NT), we've always swung the pendulum to the opposite extreme. Dickey had a pro-set, smashmouth offense with minimal passing, so we hire a spread-offense guy who throws it all over the field. Then we go back to the other extreme with McCarney. Then we go back again to pass-happy with Littrell, at least his original offense with Graham Harrell. Morris was the first coach hired in years who was positioned to build on his predecessor's system and roster for immediate success. Morris's failure to capitalize on that, at least in his first year, is on him.2 points
-
Hiring Morris is the most NT thing ever. What was inexcusable was paying top dollar for a DC who had never been a coordinator previously (ok D3 or whatever doesn’t count).2 points

SL was kept too long. The program grew stagnant. It felt like he peaked and that winning a conference 🏆 or even bowl game was always going to be out of reach. Then Mosely goes out and hires a lesser version of SL and I honestly expect lesser results. Right now: they're both 5-7 after year 1. SL has the advantage because he inherited a trainwreck whereas EM inherited a little bit of stability. So, we already have a poorer version of SL just after year 1.2 points

I was a really loud vocal critic of Seth Littrell during that last season, because I knew we could be more. I didn't know Mosely was going to hire a Great Value brand Littrell as the replacement though. Like, why even make the change?2 points

You can’t put a coach on the hot seat after 1 season. I remember when they used to give coaches 3-5 years to build a program. However, with the current situation, you are building a new team every year.2 points

What a night for Kemon Hall, Dallas......3 tackles (2 solo).....but one 69 yard PIC SIX was the best moment. Same game....Jalen Guyton (Raiders).....2 catches for 8 yards Jeff Wilson, no stats for Miami. Probably didn't play....but am not sure. McDaniel (the coach) likes Jeff (brought him over from SF)...so I think he's in pretty good shape. Jaelon Darden, Cleveland..........2 catches for 21 yards........1 KO return for 29.......2 punt returns for 16 yds. (These new KO rules may really help his chances) Nate Brooks, Cincy..........3 tackles (1 solo)1 point

I'd normally dig into someone who clearly doesn't know our name. This isn't the case here, as they type out UNT twice in the same post. So, call it a brain-fart?1 point

Looks like he hasn't been added to the roster yet. Their first game is August 31st. Best of luck to him.1 point

Yes he did, although that first appearance was a 6-5 season. The final year was impressive, but then surprisingly bailed to OC at Washington St. Was a HC four years at the FCS level. Better experience than Littrell when we hired him so that is a plus. But there were more experienced guys out there with real FBS results to be had at the same or similar money. At the very least, the Caponi hire and massive overpayment is a permanent black mark on his reputation and decision making.1 point

Littrell didn’t get a hall pass in 2020 when he had to use grad assistants for a qb coach and you never knew which players would be available week to week because of covid testing. Littrell didn’t get a hall pass in 2019 when his OC/quarterbacks coach, running backs coach, wide receivers coach, and co-DC/linebackers coach were all poached by big name/money schools. Why should Morris, who hails from the same coaching tree as Littrell, get a hall pass?1 point

I have nothing personal against them, but they should not have been granted the Texas State name. It implies more stature than their university has earned. Morris needs UNT to post a better record than TS this season.1 point

You serious Clark? You may need to revisit the 2017 class. You can’t be serious here. Morris took a 7-5 team that played in a conference championship game and a bowl game and led them to a 5-7 season facing essentially the same schedule as the year before except for Tulane being added. He got beat by FIU for crying out loud. We beat that team 52-14 and 49-7 in the two seasons prior to Morris’ arrival. He is a worse version of Littell.1 point

I'll hold off on Morris being the better hire... Let's see if keeping Caponi was a smart move.1 point

I believe the play of Morris and our offense in general is not going to be a problem this year, just like it was not last season. If our defense does not improve we can look for a repeat of last season, the opener will be a damn good indicator for what we can expect.1 point
