  1. I bet you were not around during NT's 1aa days, are you would know that it was a disaster. You think attendance and coverage are bad now, it was almost non-existent than. The benefits of playing D1 go far beyond athletics. It is a relatively exclusive club that provides more exposure to the school than anything else. Students may not ever go to a game, but it is very possible that their introduction to NT begin with coverage of NT's athletic teams. As far as your analogy to high school, playing is better than not playing, but what does that have to do with NT's sports? Are you advocated that NT drop down to give lesser players a chance to play. Invest some of that money saved by dropping D1 sports to build a fantastic intramural program.

  2. I don't buy it. Let's look at our conference and see what notable opponents our conference mates can get at home. USF: Central Michigan, Loyola Chicago FAU: Loyola Chicago, Liberty, Charleston, FIU Charlotte: Georgia St., Davidson UAB: Southern Miss, McNeese, Drake Memphis: Clemson, Virginia, Vanderbilt SMU: Texas A&M, Dayton Tulsa: Loyola Chicago, New Mexico St. ECU: Georgia Southern, South Carolina Tulane: George Mason Temple: Ole Miss WSU: WKU, Richmond UTSA: Army Rice: Harvard, Louisiana That's a myriad of teams with different reputations and rankings, yet they were all still able to get solid opponents at home. What was our best home opponent? UT Arlington? Is that on the level of any of these teams? Not to me. Every other team in our conference can schedule solid teams at home, so why can't we? We need to be objective and call out when things aren't done well.

  3. One thing the NFL found out a long time ago was non-parity was not good for the fans, nor the league, nor merchandising, nor media. College sports will soon be the same and dysfunctional unless the business heads find a way to level the field.

  4. Why do we give TCU a pass on this board? When was the last time they played us in Denton? They won't even play us in any sport home or away. Their fans aren't as obnoxious as Smut, but they are just as bad about it being beneath them to play UNT.

  5. Our lack of 2025 signees is by design for this exact reason. Why commit all your scholarships so quickly when you can wait and get more established transfers or see if any better HS recruits fall through the cracks because P5s went heavy in the portal.

  6. So FX said they have $25 million for Memphis to use in NIL payments. I doubt UNT has $250,000. While I think a NIL cap for the AAC is a good idea I don't know if UNT could meet the minimum requirement.

  7. Or get good. I mean all of these dormant alumni would proudly talk about them being UNT Alumni if we have a FOOTBALL run like Boise or Cincinnati or Memphis or SDSU or Coastal Carolina, even JMU. It’s bizarre that in all these years I’ve followed the Mean Green we’ve never hired a coach that has led us to a magical run. Meanwhile UTSA gets Coker and Traylor in a span of a few years. FAU gets Schellenberger and Kiffin. If Morris doesn’t deliver I hope the next coach has won as a head coach at the collegiate level equal or better to the AAC. Napier comes to mind but he couldn’t win above the SBC as the head guy. Experience has always mattered in my book. GMG

  9. I was on the Pauline G. Hughes Middle School B basketball team in the early 1980s with @FirefightnRick. I find your comment very triggering. Some of us had to ride the bench even on the B team. When I finally got to play I spun around the defender for an uncontested lay-up and hit the ball so hard off the boards it landed out of bounds. Then I did the same thing again. The coach laughed like hell about it afterwards. As for UNT, I try to keep our circumstances in perspective. Being in a decent G5 conference is miles above what it was like to support the team during the I-AA years. And the AAC still brings me happy tears because it isn't CUSA and our commissioner's name doesn't rhyme with Doody McDowd.

  10. All of those teams are better than what we scheduled last year. I would love for Dayton, NMSU, Army, or Richmond to come to the Pit over Omaha, LSU Shreveport, and Angelo State. How can you not see the difference of the quality in teams? We can't get a single notable team to the Pit? Yes this is last year's schedule.

  11. The AAC is a good conference, it has taken this school decades to get here, and is a very good achievement for a school that does not usually put a lot of emphasis into its athletic program. The school has some very good athletic facilities that as good if not better then some P5 schools. The big thing that I see holding UNT back is the culture, students seem less interested every year in attending games, and as they graduate and become alumni they are less interested in supporting the schools athletics.

  13. Well, I think a developmental team is different from a team in win-now mode. There is no longer any use in us taking “diamond in the rough” prospects because you will lose them as soon as they start to shine. If a player needs to be “developed”. Let them do it in Juco, D3, D2, low majors, etc. I think our program is good enough to always be in win-now mode. Under the current system, our best players will still always leave, but we can replace them with new guys who are ready to win and don’t need to be developed for 2-3 years before they are ready to contribute. Making that kind of investment in a player is dumb now since guys who are ready to play at our level already will be available all the time.

  15. As much as I hate NIL, this is a terrible idea. It creates a situation where the better teams want out of the conference. Now if they start talking about an FBS-wide NIL cap, I'm all in.

  17. This title is WILD! It feels like July offseason talk. We’re putting a lot of resources into putting a competitive product on the field. I can almost guarantee not a single person in the athletic department views UNT as a minor league product. The goal is always to win the conference, win the bowl game…and with this new set up, there’s a chance to be in the final 12. Looking forward to seeing our guys compete this year!

  18. I've always felt when someone says that a coach "won" at X school.....that meant he had a winning record. DMc was about 30 games under .500 at ISU.

  19. Too bad our league doesn't set up an alliance with another league....for some games. Sun Belt has a deal with the MAC. CUSA has a deal with the WAC. I believe in both cases....every team gets a home and away game. Two decent Div. 1 games on the schedule. We have 13 teams now. I think the MVC has 12. (Not sure if the MVC has an alliance with any other league). This should be a top priority of the commish. And take two games out of the hands of the coaches....who apparently consider scheduling a Low Priority.

  20. Yeah I don't see any school in the conference agreeing to this except Rice or Tulsa.

  21. I dont get why UNT has such a hard time scheduling the OOC portion of the schedule. The last few seasons UNT has been a solid Q2 team and at times even a Q1, playing a good game at UNT would benefit just about any D1 team in the NET rankings. So I dont buy the theory that schools are scared to play in Denton.

  22. Yes we've been a good program overall the past seven years, but we still only have one NCAA Tournament appearance to show for it. We have three straight NIT appearances and a championship but in my opinion less and less eyes are focused on the NIT, especially with the championship not at MSG anymore. We need to take advantage of our conference tournament being in our backyard and win the whole damn thing, make it to a Sweet 16, and keep increasing attendance to keep boosting our image as an attractive option to play home-and-homes with.

  23. From 247: 247Sports ranks Smith the 51st-best high school center in the 2024 class. He's also ranked the 29th-best player in Texas. Smith helped guide Haltom to a 21-12 record last season, averaging 12.9 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. Smith led the 6A level of Texas High School basketball in rebounding two straight years. He brought in 855 career rebounds, 353 in a single season, and 26 in one game. All are school records. Smith was named an 8-6A First Team All-District selection. As a senior, Smith shot 59 percent from the floor. He made 67 percent of his free throw tries on 130 attempts, and hit 10-of-30 three-point tries. Smith shot 62 percent on two-point attempts. Smith averaged 11.4 points and 11.4 rebounds per game as a junior.

  26. https://collegefootballnews.com/news/2024-north-texas-college-football-preview-key-players-game-schedule-season-predictions Give North Texas a little time to figure it all out. The American Athletic Conference is the new Conference USA, but it’s still a decent Group of Five league with enough good teams to make life tough. Under second-year head coach Eric Morris, North Texas will make life hard in the Year Two in the league. The program has been a bit stuck. The promise of the back-to-back nine-win seasons of 2017 and 2018 flew out the window with inconsistencies and a painful lack of defense, but helped by the weirdness of 2020, the six bowl games in seven years - even though it lost all six - kept North Texas relevant enough to pay attention to

  27. So there are currently 67 teams in the P4 conferences and 43 bowl games (not including the national championship) At this point the G5 conferences do have some leverage since the p4's need the G5's schools to fill out the college bowls. I know this is really a pipe dream but how incredible would it be if the G5 teams banded together and created a football relegation type structure where the top 4 teams in the G5 would get promoted into a P4 and the lowest team in the P4's would get dropped to the G5 level. I know in our highly litigious environment that it would make it even more unlikely but how fun would it be to have a chance to get into the majors.

  28. The only thing that makes me nervous is how early in the season it is. I hope we have our $hit together. Even before last season, we tend to get off to slow OOC starts and let P6 games get away from us.

  32. This is the biggest threat to our Athletics program: campus indifference, lack of school spirit and sports support. Cal is having the same issue. The key is to recruit sports fans from the surrounding communities to fill the gap. Eventually as the teams get better, and better quality opponents, the games become an event, even to nerds and wallflowers.

  33. It's very conceivable that Memphis gets invited to the ACC once Florida State, Clemson, and co. bail. But will it really be a power conference at that point?

  36. I guess I am questioning the level or amount of support and funding we are giving to the various programs. The neighborhood we reside in has changed. We need to address how we financially support the various programs in this new world order is all I am saying.

  37. Who's job is it to schedule these games, obviously these games are worth a good chunk of change, I would think that the university would have someone who's dedicated job is set these games up. I know the coach has the final say in scheduling, but I wouldn't expect him to be handling the details of scheduling.

  38. At this point I'm not even asking for power conference teams. I'd settle for solid, well known opponents. App State, NMSU, or WKU.

  39. I do too, unfortunately, the rest of the nation doesn’t feel the same way. Hardcore college basketball analysts give us respect, but we still aren’t on the level of a creighton, butler, or even Vcu. We are on our way. Just haven’t done it long enough or made any real deep runs in the big tourney.
