I agree with you. I don’t know exactly why, but I have to admit: I think our defense is going to be very much improved, maybe even good this year. There were a lot of young players who got significant reps as freshmen and showed real flashes last year. I think that those players mixed with some very promising transfers that have a good handle on this defense will surprise a lot of people. If the defense can even be in the top 100 this year, and the offense can put the pieces together anywhere close to how we did last year (I trust that this is just going to happen under Morris and Cobbs), I think we will be ahead of where Seth had us, even before this whole NIL/transfer combo really redefined the landscape. That said, I think the defense has potential to be much better than top 100. I get it- the evidence might all point to the contrary, but I just have a feeling I can’t shake.6 points

The sign of a good coach is can that coach evaluate his team from one season to the next and make correct adjustments in personnel and/or schemes and show improvement in lacking areas. Morris mentioned that after player turnover from last year that majority of players now are his recruits and the buy-in is better. It will be interesting to compare last years team to this years and find out.3 points

I was sharing this thought with my girlfriend, but I just get a feeling that Eric has started to figure UNT out and is putting the pieces in place to place us in the hunt for the AAC crown. Remembering that we no longer must face SMU gives me hope that we could very well be in the top quarter to top half of the league before all is said and done. I don't expect national championships, but I do think we should routinely expect to be in the top half of the league standings year in year out and usually get to a bowl game and sometimes win a bowl game.2 points

None of the obituaries really stand out to me (do a search and take your pick), so I'll just link his wikipedia page. I had the privilege of seeing him perform at least twice; the two times I remember were first at an outdoor venue in downtown Austin in the late 90s, and the second time at "The Mucky Duck" club in Houston, which also was a book signing event. Kinky was a satirist, and definitely an independent. The lyrics of most of his songs can't be taken at face value; and are frequently shocking - on purpose. Listen to his music, read his books and Texas Monthly columns, and you might begin to understand him. He had some unforgettable one liners: "Vote for me, and I'll lower the speed limit from 55 to 54.99" (when the speed limit was 55, and he was running for JP in Kerrville; a "Jewish Joke") "If you're going to drink and drive, don't forget your car" "Are there any children in the audience? No? Good - because I wouldn't want to say 'duck' in front of a C-H-I-L-D" Sometime in the 90's, Kinky did a comedic music video of "Get Your Biscuits In The Oven" with good friend Ruth Buzzi (Laugh-In) and Richard Moll (Night Court). FWIW, Ruth Buzzi has lived north of Fort Worth for many years. The video has some scenes which might have been filmed in Fort Worth.2 points

SMU fan that finds GOMEANGREEN.com more interesting than pony fan.com. Again I ask do we have NT fans constantly, constantly, lurking around other fan sites ?2 points

I saw Kinky Friedman in 2011 in Salado at a benefit concert with BJ Thomas for the Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch. He was well know but the draw for me that night was BJ Thomas who played in small dance halls around Houston with a local band called the Triumphs. Battle dances with Roy Head and the Traits were always special when I was growing up. And the old timers probably remember his song "Raindrops Keep Failing on My Head" from the movie "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid." However I must say than Kinky held his own that evening and was very entertaining. It was a hoot to listen to his satirical style. I knew of him from his run for governor of Texas in 2006 and his articles in Texas Monthly. I did not know he had passed away. May he rest in peace. I wish we had more people these days who did not take themselves so seriously and enjoyed life like Kinky did.2 points

Watched several of his recent highlights and his opponents can’t handle the floater. He is killing the league with it. Sucks he has to play in the PRC. Hope he is getting paid well.1 point

I had the pleasure of being his campaign manager in my East Texas county....when he ran for Governor. He came to Texarkana....for a campaign event. I got to introduce him...and spend a few minutes alone with him. Just a great guy. Anyway probably 5-6 years later....he was at Dan's Silverleaf in Denton. I went to watch him perform. I went up to him beforehand....re-introduced myself. And I asked him...if he'd sing "Sold American" (my favorite song of his). Not only did he do it....he dedicated it to me....for helping him in his campaign. Truly....a one of a kind.1 point

I actually agree with you here. PAC needs to expand with a combination of MWC/AAC teams. North Texas needs to make sure its as attractive as possible b/c its probably happening in the next 2-3 years.1 point

Well the time to breakthrough is now with the PAC 2 moving into conference configuration mode. GMG1 point

In all seriousness, as American Football grows its footprint around the world there really shouldn't be any limits to where we'll go get players. I don't keep up with basketball much but I think 2 of the first top 10 players came directly out of France in the NBA draft this year? SEC and many others have been grabbing Aussie rules guys for years to be punters and even more these days. There are even some guys who have made it to the NFL who played high school football in Mexico as well.1 point

Cap prices are steep but when I get a New Era 59 Fifty cap from Lids or Fanatics I wear it for years and it holds up well. Nice to see a vintage Scrappy on some new gear. He looks like he's getting sick and tired of all the player transfers.1 point

It takes a large group of people to make this happen. This year the tournament charged an entry fee for the first time. Basically the same group of people that are driving everything else are helping fund this during the summer. We all think the national exposure of this tournament for our basketball program is huge. If anyone would like to know specifically what is involved financially to make this happen, PM me and I will be happy to share the details.1 point

Some people question why so many posters are not posting anymore. Maybe they are tired of the Mods allowing a UNT board to give a free run of the boards to posters from other schools. I don't believe I have seen this on other school boards outside of game week.1 point

Year two of the Morris's tenure the defense better show up...if not we will finish below .500..... Wyoming is the 4th game of the season at home. NT should win this.1 point
-
Im just saying there shouldn’t be a single G5 team that we can’t compete with. It’s embarrassing to suggest or expect otherwise.1 point
-
We should schedule hard, that's how you get better and gain national respect. It let's you know what a coach is worth and if he can step out of conference and compete. We are a poor program right now, keep your head down, work hard, take challenges, get better. That's what we need to do.1 point
-
Wyoming is consistently a solid team, good fan support, respected. More like we should strive for UNT to be more like Wyoming.1 point
-
I hope so. This current path, of us trying to "keep up with the Joneses".....isn't sustainable.1 point
-
Are we seriously still discussing this? Wyoming has held more success than UNT has had throughout the past decade so if anything, Wyoming is an excellent opponent to play. I am struggling to understand the argument against playing them1 point
-
If they stick to the NET formula, then let the bubble teams fight it out in the play ins. Conference champions, even the small ones deserve to go straight to the field of 64.1 point
-
Seriously? El Paso is further West than Laramie, Wyoming. Wyoming is a peer program. We need to schedule more MWC schools instead of the Texas Southerns of the world.1 point

Morris won’t be the coach here in 2026. If he fails he will be gone by then (most likely scenario). If he is successful, he will take the first “bigger” job offered.0 points

So, are you cool when 7-11 or 8-10 power teams in their conferences get those spots when the third AAC team or the second MVC team gets told they didn’t measure up against what Wake Forest or Georgia or Northwestern did because of their conference’s depth? because that’s what will happen.0 points

Ooooook. It's as if every game on the schedule isn't going to be a challenge. But hey, let's send our boys a thousand miles away up in elevation to get rolled up. Genius idea.-1 points
-
Our football program has no business in scheduling difficult opponents in difficult locales. A program learning to win comes first and foremost. Then you schedule better. Getting your head bounced off the turf doesn't make you better. But hey, I've never always been right. Maybe we jump up on them early with our offense and that puts their offense in a difficult position. That's the only hope. Otherwise, whew.-1 points

However, SMU bought themselves into the ACC without a doubt. Which is in my view, a lot harder to believe than being able to get an offer from the crumbling B12. Have you looked at the ACC. That is probably as good a conference as there is outside of the SEC.-1 points
