  1. This was my first caravan. Up till today all my interactions with the AD/coaches have been a quick salute or handshake at The Pit. I enjoyed it because it was an intimate setting with genuine comments from Jared and the coaches. It wasn't all sunshine and rainbows that the social media team has to post. And I know they've probably had the same spiel at all three events, but the three coaches seemed to interact and bounce off of each other well. Jared was brutally honest in that "you may love it, you may hate it, or not feel great about it, but NIL isn't going anywhere" and that we are in the lower third of our conference at the moment. But I did appreciate his slight at our previous conference when talking about our linear ESPN TV coverage with the American. He said something like those who remember our Conference USA days knew it took a lot of steps to watch our games, and there were 3 or 4 places our games could be. Five linear ESPN broadcasts in football and 11 in basketball this past season. Ross had no issue mentioning past players who left "for more money" by name but not in spiteful ways at all. He is glad they received opportunities to better themselves or families elsewhere and compared it to when you own a business, you support the employees who go on after making similar decisions and believes respecting those makes you a great destination for the inbound employees/players who have found a new home in UNT. He said though former Mean Green Bryce Zephyr didn't play much for them, he was best friends with recent transfer Atin Wright, and that Bryce told him he should "100% go to North Texas." He also acknowledged that it's tough being a fan of college sports right now, but encouraged fans to stick with it, "No one was worse off because they gave something their all." whether that's donating or buying season tickets and going to games. He admitted one day in the midst of all of our departures he was "down" then saw how Duke, who could pay any player as much as they wanted, lost their starting PG for Baylor. He concluded this is happening everywhere, and highlighted wins against Purdue and LSU to confirm that there is still hope to compete with the programs with bigger operating budgets.

  2. I had a pair of custom flags made. They mount on the front corners of my vehicle. (Very dignitary-like.). I went with the logo of my time at NTSU/UNT.

  3. Well done. Loved the place they had it. Had a great free food spread. Everyone got two free drink tickets. Super impressed by some of the fundraising numbers that Jared gave. They have raised several million toward the new Ath. Center. And he said we've now gone over 2,000 individual donors. (trust me that's great for us). All three coaches (Burton, Hodge and Morris) spoke and gave glowing reports of how summer workouts are going. A few tidbits that I picked up on my own: 1) The women's hoops schedule is almost complete....the men's is still far from complete. I did ask.....we're not getting a return game from Boise State. 2) I told Jared the importance of having game programs (football) and at least roster lists (basketball)....since we have so much turnover. He said that they would make sure they have those. 3) There was something on slide that Jared had on the screen.....about some new licensing for Mean Green beer and liquor. Not sure what that meant....but it intrigued me. 4) So much turnover....that Coach Hodge noted that of top 15 players on the AAC All Conference list (basketball)......only two were with their original team. 5) Just like last season....the Coach Morris radio show.....will be on Thursday nights. A great event. I'm old and don't hear well....so others who were there......and who picked up on other stuff....feel free to add to this.

  4. The coaches also talked about the importance of team bonding this time of year. Especially with so many new guys. Coach Morris said....they've divided up into teams (not sure how many) and are having all kinds of competitions this summer. He said they'd play basketball soon. And mentioned laser tag. And a few other competitions. Coach Hodge went on and on about how great of a teammate Matt Stone is. How much Matt loves UNT. He said that they took the entire team up to Matt's grandparents ranch in Oklahoma (289 acres). And that the guys got to go 4-wheeling and do other things like that.

  5. He could try to catch on with another CFL team or try the UFL. He has the rest of his life to be a coach but only a limited time to be a player.

  6. Attacking every home game with their "connections" and "strings pulled" should be a part of the job description in terms of attendance. I don't care if the opponent is Sanger High.

  7. Bump. At the Coaches Caravan in Fort Worth today Jared Mosley admitted he hates that DATCU Stadium has never had a sellout, that a decade is long enough. They are circling September 21 on the calendar against Wyoming. Apparently all the strings and connections will be pulled to make that game DATCU's first sellout.

  12. I'm sorry to hear this news. I knew Greg's father Merle many decades ago when he was the General Manager of A J Foyt Chevrolet in Houston. Merle was an outstanding man and he was so proud of his son Greg. Greg had played at NTSU and was then playing for the Houston Oilers during the Luv Ya Blue days. The North Texas helmet in his office was the first time that I had ever seen the "Flying Worm". Merle later became the GM of our local Rolls Royce dealership in Houston. Decades later I met his son Greg when Greg's son Beau was transferring from Syracuse to North Texas. Beau completed this career at North Texas, served as assistant coach at several colleges, and is now the General Manager of the Memphis Tigers football program. (I had never heard of college GM's before NIL) Anyway, they're a wonderful family, and Greg's passing is certainly also a loss to our Mean Green family.

  13. I used to purchase that mag religiously every year until about ten or so years ago. Felt like the quality went down and thought the price had become ridiculous.

  14. I was in attendance at the first ever sell out at Fouts in its original 20.250 K capacity (at least that is what the announcer at Fouts declared) in 1989 vs SFA! The year before we traveled about 10K down to Texas. During that same era (late 80's) we had several other close calls and in 1990 we had a SRO crowd of 22K vs SMU. Have we ever had a 22K crowd vs SMU at APOGEE/DATCU? We were 1-AA back then. You know, that time in NT history that everyone moans and groans about these days. What I take away from this info is that we had someone who was in charge of promotions who was better at their job than anyone we've hired since. Someone who was a devoted NT graduate.

  15. Well, I think we are plenty shiny.

  16. Because we are now in the bracket of teams that are no longer considered a guaranteed w, but also not shiny enough of a win for the risk.

  18. I thought it was always A&M and UT overload, literally "Texas" football, plus Big?12 spotlight, and then everyone else lumped in the back pages. Plus last year didn't a UTSA-homer write our evaluation and knocked us down because of his bias?

  20. Schedule was indeed tougher and injuries were much deeper. I commended Ross for his first year as a high level HC. However, can't lose to Fordham types in non-league play. Can't lose bottom barrel leauge games like vs nutsack. Forgot opponent, but it was a non-league game and we were up 6 with 1:10 to go and proceeded to let THEM win at the free throw line. Pretty remarkable considering lead and time remaining. I want to say it was @ Boise. Gotta go +3 there in the win column.

  21. I'm not looking down my nose at anyone. But if you want to lock in an early schedule, ACU type trips will do it. I'd rather us stay patient and play "up" or play similar opponents that align with the AAC.

  23. I've seen Academy sell these pop-up canopies for several years now. How hard could it be for someone in charge of NT gear-promotions to contact the company that makes these for Academy and ask how much they would charge to change the color scheme in order to turn it into a NT Battle Flag canopy. No new design. Just use the same pattern and change the color of the material used. The same with this.

  25. For men's basketball, I personally have no problem with us doing home and homes with Div. I Texas schools like ACU, SHSU, SFA, Texas State. SHSU and Texas State were opponents of ours....in 2 of our NIT years. SFA won an NCAA tournament game way before we did. And the year we beat Purdue......ACU beat Texas. So....if we're looking down our noses at schools like that.....no wonder we can't get things scheduled. What I don't understand....are some of the places that we go to.....without getting a return game....like Boise State and St. Mary's. We've gone to Boise twice with no return (last year....and one year I think the JJ era)

  26. Regarding lifers comment about quality…that’s an embarrassing picture of Gary Joseph. How did a picture with his eyes closed end up in the cover? That’s really, really bad.

  27. I get it mostly for the high school coverage, so I can see how you might not be a fan if you don’t care too much about high school football. Having said that, I’ve always felt like they’ve done a good job giving all school equal coverage based on their peers.

  28. Seems to be easier for the women's teams in general for some reason. Last year we played Texas Tech at home in volleyball, softball regularly gets Big XII/SEC teams like OSU, A&M and/or Tech to come to Denton. This year soccer is starting the season at home against Oklahoma and Alabama.

  29. I always thought the quality was pretty good, but the price definitely became ridiculous. Now I pay $50 (I think) for online access to TexasFootball.com, the magazine, a recruiting magazine, and I think this year I also got a Texas Basketball magazine included. Access to the app is great if you follow high school football. Bonus, it’s delivered to my mailbox.

  36. The most loyal fans are the ones who take it in the nuts for EVERY program. You should see the crazy points program that Baylor puts their season ticket holders through. Want good football seats? Well, you have to be a season ticket holder for Men’s Basketball too, Oh AND Women’s Basketball! What product hasn’t had a gigantic price increase in the last five years? Everything is more expensive.

  42. So you'd rather get some extra revenue to the detriment of the team's development? The team learns nothing from these games, the fans don't show up, and it makes our schedule weaker. Wyoming is at least from a respected conference and it should be the type of teams we play to continue to raise our profile. Here's the teams that have recently gone to Wyoming: Nebraska, Oregon, Washington State, Missouri, Tulsa. Future home opponents: Texas Tech, BYU, Utah, Arizona. When have we ever had anyone of that calibre come to Apogee? But we are too good to play Wyoming?

  43. Do you realize that the University of Texas played Wyoming AT Laramie? I'm not sure why they would do that unless it was to show them that any member of the same classification is not necessarily too high and mighty to play any other member. It could have been that Wyoming needed the sellout crowd to pay for stadium improvements. Whatever the reason these games will have benefits to both teams. Yellowstone is one of the most beautiful spots on planet Earth and I hope that I can visit there before my life ends. Maybe this game will give me the opportunity to do so.

  44. My mistake on the 2-1. Also I didn't ask if you watch college football, @El Paso Eagle did. No those two aren't equal. Playing an FCS at home does nothing for us, no one knows those teams or their reputation. Wyoming isn't a marquee team that everyone will know, but it's better than TSU or ACU any year. This is pretty simple to solve, make a thread with a poll to see who prefers an FCS at home vs a 1-1 with an FBS team and you'll see how alone you are in your thinking.

  45. Good grief. This thread has gotten out of hand.
