No, it is not a "necessary evil". College football was just fine before this NIL bullsh*t.

If they are trying to be transparent why not tell us how much they raise? We need to know what impact our contributions are doing, not just throwing money into a void.

I think a financial statement should be provided to every doner that includes annual and YTD balances and how much is paid out and to whom. As a doner, I think I'm entitled to that information. Additionally, who makes the decision as to how much we pay a player? The coaches? The AD? Is the a cap as to the amount any one player can receive?

Coming soon....a TV ad from some lawyer like Jim Adler ("The Texas Hammer") where he asks...."Do you have a NIL case? You may be due huge money".... Just kidding.....but not really.

And I still haven't gotten a satisfactory answer as to why we have two collectives. Is one football only and the other for basketball and everyone else? Which one serves the greater good?

One thing to keep in mind. No one is forcing these kids to play football. Sometimes we all act as if that’s their only option. It’s not. Let them get a job. Go to work. If they truly want to educate themselves then fine. Pay for your tuition. If that’s by working in a grocery store, do it. If it’s by earning an academic or athletic scholarship fine. But don’t ask me to pay you to come and play at my school and then expect me to pay again at the ticket office to watch you play. I’m no fool

It really seems foolish to just hand over money to people who have no accountability to where and how those funds are spent. Let that sink in.

Been a Mean Green fan for well over 50 years. Like many of you I have green blood flowing in my veins. But I must admit that if I were to win a $500,000,000 (cash value) lotto I would not contribute or donate one cent to UNT Athletics under the current system in place. ( NIL, Portal) Not one cent.

I also give to the collectives and would like my money back from every athlete that transferred. I know it doesn’t work that way though. After losing ALMOST all of our good players from the football team AND basketball team to the transfer portal, I do question why I continue to give to the collectives. The answer, I guess, is that maybe it helps us attract new players to replace the good players that we used to have who left us through the portal. That is the only reason I am still giving. Anyone have any other reasons to help justify it?

I have given to Harry's collective as did others and still saw our roster decimated by other poaching schools. I realize this is a necessary evil, but it's discouraging to give hard earned money when an athlete is going to leave regardless.

Why would anybody donate to just to have players just come here for year then bounce? I wouldn't even put the players' names on the back of the jerseys...

Me too, but let them earn some money on the side. Leaving that up to the universities just invites cheating. Then again, the NCAA is just a modern day eunuch.

To be blunt...if you do not donate, if you do not buy tickets and if you do not follow the Mean Green, we are not interested in your thoughts. Enticing fans of other programs to join us is far fetched, as they already have an agenda and that agenda is to demean North Texas and poke fun at those who do care about North Texas and its future.

Schools paying 440k for a back up will face fatigue from all this methinks.

NIL will still impact UNT athletics.

Thinking that a Houston walk-on is what we should get pretty much defines how NT is viewed, even by our own fans.

Coaching is a paid career. Playing college football is not employment anymore than junior high football is.

Nothing prevents said players....from going in to coaching and working their way up the coaching ladder. (if they want to make the big coaching bucks). But even at that....there are some lean times...as you work your way up that ladder. I remember the story that Grant told....of how they lived off of (wife) Cece's income, as a waitress at Olive Garden....when he was a GA at Northern Colorado.

Yuuuuppp... Trying to get us coming and going. It's not sustainable. I have thought long and hard about donating a significant amount of money. I've had it queued up a few times to do so. I just stop and draw back and think... why. I have it. I wouldn't miss it.. and I could do it annually with no issue. But... "why" always flashes into my mind.

The coaches and AD's have made money because the programs they ran made money. Yes, they were paid a handsome salary, but these kids were provided for just not directly. First class facilities, everything I listed above, locker rooms that rival the finest country clubs, top rate sports medicine and rehab facilities, etc... There is value in what they receive for a scholarship in exchange for their ability to play a sport. Now, they should be allowed to make whatever they are able off of their name, image or likeness, but not paid a salary, ala smuT and TX Tech, for just being on the team. If Bill Utter Ford wanted to give Booger Kennedy a truck and a salary to be their spokesperson because he was "Built Ford Tough" then let them.

All it will do is make the coach get fired sooner...at places that can afford to buyout tens of millions of dollars to make sure a coach never coaches their school ever again

Many were not starters but that doesn’t make them walk-ons. 85 scholarships and only 22 starters. That means the overwhelming majority of scholarship players are backups by definition.

No idea... but given that he is an alum of ND he will look down his nose at us from the jump nor will he truly fight for the likes of UNT being on equal footing than his beloved Notre Dame. Could easily be a stuck in the mud do nothing hire that collects a check for X amount of time and moves on... should fit right in.

Why would you think that the NIL is going away? It is allowed by our court system and the NCAA has no control over it. I assume if you make a donation to an athletic department it will be tax deductible regardless if it ends up in the NIL pot or not. Will donors tire of players moving annually to play elsewhere for more money. Sure they will, but this is the new reality of college sports. You keep thinking that if you shut your eyes you can wish it away. I am not an attorney, but perhaps one way to slow the train down is to make athletics employees and have them sign contracts for a specific number of years that financially penalize them if they leave for another school during its time frame. We don't have to like the new reality of college athletics but we need to accept it and hope our administration can figure out how North Texas is going to navigate thru these financially challenging times.

It's all just a money grab now. The lawyers are circling the NCAA like hungry sharks. Bankruptcy may be the only way out for the NCAA soon. Start over with a new organization.

I'm ready to live in a world where players play in empty stadiums/arenas and no one watches on TV. One would think that's the direction of all of this. Rather, for the time being, the NCAA, athletic departments, and the courts are treating fans like drug addicts in the sense of they believe they can dilute the product, overcharge for the product, change the chemistry of the product and us addicts will still come get our fix no matter what. They're missing a very huge variable to all of this: consumer based market correction.

College Sports will bottom out and then the NCAA thru the court system will figure it out. Ain't no way college athletics can sustain NIL in its present form.

You mean that all that free stuff they received before was enough? But, how do they survive without NIL when they get free tuition, books, room, food, tutoring services, clothing, healthcare, workout facilities, nutritionist/dieticians, strength and conditioning coaches, etc... I think we pick one system or the other. One, is the old way. You get a scholarship that includes all the above and a small stipend for spending money. Or, you come, sign a NIL deal, make your money and pay for all that above.

My friend who is really into golf....tells me that the Saudis will keep supporting it. I'm not sure. I know the Saudis have billions.....but no one likes losing money. And they're bleeding money. Spending millions and millions......and they can't be taking in that much. I told my friend....that watching was akin to watching the UFL/XFL compared to the NFL. It's like the fans that are that......are really trying to get into it......but they're almost kinda faking it.

To follow-up on that I just don't see any coordinated strategy from Morris et al. I get that NIL and portal have screwed the pooch, but insisting on a high school focused strategy just seems like putting lipstick on a pig. Why in hades would we sign a high school player when we know that if they are any good they will bail on us. To me, if we weren't going to improve upon Littrell, why go to the trouble of buying out another coaching salary?

Because the football program is currently lifeless. A what is looking to be a terrible hire is steering the ship. The football program hasn't won a conference trophy in over 20 years. We haven't won a bowl game in over a decade. Our football history is pretty poor. Our students are weirdos and our city doesn't care. It's not that fans are being negative, it's just the facts that are negative. Yet, we dump money into football as if we have it to dump and as if we're a prolific football program.

I don’t think we could afford to buy out his contract after 2 years. But I agree, his hire has been highlighted by poor recruiting and mistakes.
