  1. Do you want him to refuse the offers or just not talk about them?

  2. I hear ya, but I hope a guy with this type of resume will want to leave his mark and leave something better than when he got here. A push for excellence. Guys like him don't get to where they are by doing a half assed job.

  3. The defense was bad, therefore the defensive coordinator must be. It is not nearly that simple.

  7. I’ll be curious to see how that plays out. I feel like the IRS objection is going to still be there when donations to schools is still to directly pay athletes. You already can’t deduct donations tied to seat benefits. I don’t see how this is going to be deductible.

  8. NIL/portal has lessened my interest in college football in general but my lack of enthusiasm for this season mostly revolves around Morris. The lack of a defense kills my confidence in a good season (and then anyone worth a damn will get plucked by a p4).

  9. Ok... as far as strawman arguments and equivalency go... that was just the worst. A terrorist attack vs a spirit group? I get we love football but that's not even apples and Oranges. Thats... apples and GMO modified asparagus grown from the enriched soil from the moon.

  11. Many were not starters but that doesn’t make them walk-ons. 85 scholarships and only 22 starters. That means the overwhelming majority of scholarship players are backups by definition.

  12. Helping the little guys! I think our brand recognition and appeal only helps bring attention to the little guys like SMU, A&M, ND, UT and Nebraska. We're all in this together, right? I'm okay with this.

  13. Exhibit A-Z: Defense. Also not starting Rogers from day one was a huge blunder. We had the money to hire a more experienced coach and we went with the bargain hire again. We got what we paid for.

  16. I'm taking a (big) "wait and see approach" to this hire. I remember the L. Jackson and Helwig (AD) eras. Both had Austin ties and tried to make us UT "light" or flat out hold us back.

  17. Gretchen Bataille was disastrous, and V. Lane Rawlins came to the rescue (having previously been president of Washington State and Memphis) and got us back on track, but he said from the beginning he would not stick around very long. Smatresk had been President of UNLV for 4 years and had previously served as an administrator at UTA. I thought from the beginning Smatresk was a steal. Smatresk proved himself to be effective and is stepping down at just the right time. I think we need the expertise that Keller brings to the position and I am optimistic that he will prove to be a great hire.

  18. I’m using the communal “we” in our folks rationalizing a very underwhelming, under-qualified hire at the time. I didn’t like that hire either and he was more disappointing than I’d even originally thought by the end of his tenure having focused all his energy on the useless UNT Dallas project - something I still loathe. This new guy may be great. Just cautioning those expecting stroke in Austin. I’ll believe that when I see it. Would be great for UNT though.

  19. There may have been a few, but in general the Lee Jackson hire was far from popular. If you like low key executives with seemingly few accomplishments, Jackson may have been a good choice. Of course, I was underwhelmed by the Smatresk hire and he imo turned out to be very good for NT.

  26. Good connection to Texas Higher Education dealings in Austin. But does he like Athletics? Looking at his LinkedIn bio he got his Bachelors in Philosophy at Notre Dame. MA and PhD from Georgetown. Lieutenant in Navy Reserves for 10 years. Drum Major in Notre Dame marching band. https://www.linkedin.com/in/hkelleredu/

  30. Friends over anything else. Word of mouth is still the #1 most powerful form of marketing. Doesn't matter if you know the rules of the sport, we need to make sure home football games are still "the cool thing to do" no matter what your major is. A close second, especially for our student base, would be a semester's tuition raffle. I think that really impacted attendance during the CBI run. I'd still jump for a 1/8 deduction on my student loan debt.

  31. Obviously, this can only be a net positive for student attendance. I just think it will be a VERY minor positive as long as the team is mediocre to bad. I have to assume the "Maniacs" were already going to football games and encouraging others to do the same. I think this announcement just means the leaders of the "Maniacs" are now getting paid by the AD to use the official Maniac's social platforms to increase student awareness of football games.

  32. This is confusing to me. Weren't the "Maniacs" already going to football games?

  39. The NIL payday is not going away and the cost of doing business will increase. Also, all our new facilities did was level the playing field, which certainly was a big step forward. At present the FBS has a limit of 85 scholarships but that could change for both the G4 and G6 programs when they spin off. The P4 schools could stay at 85, G6 drop to 75 ,and 1AA remain at 65. The money for NIL has to come from somewhere and for those of us with limited resources must look at reducing expenses anywhere they can. I certainly don't like it but amateur college sports is dead.

  40. They were once at the top of the list. You could also apply this to educational facilities, as being not as important. Cost of tuition and NIL payments is more important and is proven by the lack of funds raised for our new AD building. NIL contribution will become even more important once it is tax deductible.

  42. Maybe a little unfair on my part, but as far as creating "excitement" around this announcement especially in the social media space, it was pretty underwhelming. Glad they are trying, but I don't think this is going to inspire more students to attend.

  43. OK, WAY over the top, but it at least it got your attention. It takes a lot to get the attention of North Texas fans......especially in the off season. AND at least four people liked it..😎 Seriously, the only thing that represents a "tradition" at NT is it's propensity for dealing with a problem by creating, (or allowing the creation of), some bureaucratic entity or group in which to pass the buck should someone have a complaint. And giving them the runaround is our most long-standing reaction to complaints/concerns. Why do we need a new spirit group when there is one that already exists......The TALONS. Why don't the Talons recruit a group of "maniacs" into their organization and populate the same student section? It's my understanding that the Talons have a budget and are given money for their organization every year. The Talons are supposed to be in charge of spirit at North Texas. If they aren't getting that done, (and it's my assessment that they aren't), then GET SOMEONE IN THERE THAT CAN, AND KEEP THE NAME OF ONE OF THE LONGEST RUNNING STUDENT SPIRIT GROUPS IN OUR SCHOOL'S HISTORY. Our mascot is the EAGLE. A group called the TALONS is the perfect name for an active student spirit organization.

  44. After the shock and horror of the 9/11 attack, I thought that the administration would immediately look at how the FBI failed in its job of protecting the American people and then clean house. And then after cleaning house, they would make the FBI leaner and meaner. Nope, instead of doing that, what they did was create a whole new bureaucracy Homeland Security. New bureaucracy, new agency boundaries, and a whole new budget. Now, North Texas is basically doing the same thing. If the Talons are not getting the job done (and aside from shooting off the cannon at games, they certainly aren't) then look at why, clean house, and revitalize the long-standing spirit(?) group. Don't create another bureaucracy.
