Portal is fascinating. In the short time it has been around I classed guys into three groups. 1. Those doing well looking to go up the food chain. 2. Those not getting the experience they expected and looking to move in some direction to find that experience, generally playing time. 3. Guys whose services are no longer required. Seeing high major starters go in? This think that requires a fourth category. 4. I want more NIL money and playing leverage to get it from you or someone else.12 points

This is college football in 2024. Oklahoma State lost 12 guys last year first day of transfer portal. They just played for a conference championship last week. The roster was lacking depth and talent there is no two way around it. North Texas lost a couple guys that they got out of the portal that we didn't win huge recruiting battles for that came to north texas and became all confernce players (Miner, Maclin, Ayo and Nwaiwu). The RB and WR I am not super concerned with replacing. The OL will be tough. as for the other 13 there is several depth guys and walk on that wouldn't have seen the field. The coaches need to hit on evals is the biggest factor. There are over 1000 kids in portal. There are more kids than spots. But North Texas has had to many walks on out perfoming scholarship guys the last 3-4 years.11 points

The NCAA is trying hard to avoid the Power Conferences from breaking off and doing their own thing. Get ready for them (NCAA) to start cowering more than ever.9 points

I don't know what anyone else is doing. I know the one at A-State does one year deals. They don't commit money they don't have. They also pay after the fact. You have to meet your various obligations during the month or you are likely to have your pay held until you make the required appearances and social media posts. I highly doubt that is the practice everywhere but one of the organizers at A-State was COO of a very large bank and did a stint at the Federal Reserve. My expectation is we will eventually see a collective go to bankruptcy or just flat fold because it lacks any assets to protect in bankruptcy court and some really unhappy players when the check bounces or never arrives. I also expect some schools will have the embarrassment of discovering that the person they hired to run the collective is a film-flam man and has skimmed money off in various schemes. Again won't be pretty.9 points

I think it is largely because of how they narrowed the portal to two windows instead of being open ended like it used to be.9 points

The TP opened today. There hasn’t been time to bring in talent. I think waiting to see who is signed for the Spring…possibly summer, would be a better gauge.9 points

I really don’t think there is much Morris can do with some of these departures. Guys know they can get paid handsomely and don’t have to sit out because so many of them have graduated due to getting that free COVID season of eligibility. I completely get the concern though. One thing I’ll say is that as of now out of our 17 Portal entrants, only Ethan Miner and Josh Smith were brought in by Morris.8 points

Isn't this what the Mean Green Forum wanted.? The current roster didn't meet your expectations. We are up to 17 in the portal +19 seniors. I had predicted 50 new scholarship players for fall camp. The big challenge now is getting enough in school in the next few weeks to have an effective spring. Its not as easy as it sounds, especially with limited grad level classes.8 points

@TheReal_jayDsays that most of these guys were encouraged to leave so take that as you wish.8 points

Spoiled brats? These aren't just gladiators that go out there every Saturday for your own entertainment. These are college students that are actively looking to set the best course for their own personal success. Finances are a huge aspect of that mentality and while I am disappointed in the way the NCAA has handled NIL, blaming 20 year old college kids for taking money seems barbaric7 points

Bring back Seth Littrell. If you want to enter the transfer portal, you have to beat him in a 1 on 1 wrestling match first. Our team retention would be through the roof7 points

He played at Vanderbilt for crying out loud. Of course his stats don't add up. He had to deal with SEC teams instead of SBC & AAC teams. Put Rogers in a Commodores helmet and I wonder how he does (heck, maybe we'll find out!) He played SEC football, and got a degree from Vanderbilt. That is a success to me. I promise I'm not saying that lightly, and definitely not out of spite to poo-poo Rogers. Ask any of our Parker County residents who happened to see Seals play. Now, it seems he just wants to ball close to home, and if he wants to go into business, UNT has some extremely competitive graduate programs in that arena... not to mention an insanely-successful alumnus who runs one of the most successful Tax firms in America, who probably could get him a nice position upon graduation if he so chooses.6 points

The only way the NCAA saves FBS football is by splitting all TV money equally amongst all FBS football programs and instilling a salary cap. Otherwise, the sport will die and thousands of kids will lose their opportunity to earn a college scholarship amongst which hundreds will never even get the chance to make it to the NFL. Paying players isn't the problem, it's the greed amongst the top 10-20 programs that is doing this. The original issue is players wanted a piece of the pie. Fast-forward several years and the players still aren't getting a piece of the pie. Instead, wealthy fanbases have baked their own pies to distribute to their players. It's worst than what it should have been. Not impossible to go back and correct mistakes but this certainly feels like the point of no return if these new rules pass.6 points

The majority of these kids are being misled with bad advice and don't give a second thought about their education. As I have mentioned, the cost of tuition, room/board, books, meals, snacks, pre/post game/practice nutrition, tutors, clothing, healthcare, etc... is plenty. Tired of the Me mentality that so many have, of them saying one thing and then turning around and doing the exact opposite. What would be best for 95% of these kids is to attend a school that provides a great education in the field of study that interests them because they aren't going to the NFL.5 points

The NCAA doesn't have the balls. The ran this shit NIL program out there with zero guidelines and the lil' Ponies tot he south made a mockery of it. Just change it from NIL to PFP (pay for play).5 points

https://calbears.com/news/2023/12/3/football-bloesch-elevated-to-offensive-coordinator-o-line-coach Baylor hired Spavital a few days ago, so Cal stays in-house. This was a no-brainer move for Cal (who's doing it the right way, promoting him to OC/O-Line... not OC/QBs), and I hope they do well. Bloesch is a really good OC. Hope they find a designated QBs coach to replace Spav though, otherwise if their QBs have any technical/mechanical issues, they're screwed. Cole Johnson is also still there as an Offensive GA as well.5 points

@UNTFan94 I love Todd Dodge, truly, but I think he is happy doing what he is doing. He gets to enjoy football at his own pace now. I just had my kids in one of his minicamps this past weekend. He is holding another one this weekend. Best quarterback coach in the country as far as I am concerned. Anyways, I don’t think he wants to go back to the requirements of a full-time gig. He gets to enjoy his family and friends too much to go back to the daily grind. Now if you want to take advantage of that connection and make the most of it, you probably need to do your best to grab Riley Dodge instead. I think that would be a stellar hire.5 points

Get to know North Texas The North Texas Mean Green were picked to finish 6th in a mediocre American Athletic Conference. New head coach Ross Hodgehelped the team end last year on a high note with a very successful 31-7 season and an NIT win. North Texas comes in ranked 3rd in the country in scoring defense, allowing just 56.7 points per game (PPG). The high scoring, up-tempo offense that Ross Hodge hoped to install this season hasn’t entirely taken off. They rank just 257th in scoring offense, averaging 70.7 PPG. But the season is young and this is a very talented team that should by no means be overlooked. North Texas is ranked 76th in the highly respected KenPom rankings, whereas Boise State is ranked 84th. The Mean Green are led by senior guard Rubin Jones and junior wing Aaron Scott. Scott leads the team in scoring with 14.3 PPG to go along with four rebounds per game (RPG) and shooting a team high 45% from behind the 3-point arc. Jones is averaging 11 PPG while playing a team high 31 minutes per game. This team wants to play an up tempo, fast break game. The Broncos have had stretches in games in which they become turnover prone. Turnovers lead directly into the game the Mean Green wants to play; let this team get into a rhythm and they will be trouble for most anyone in the country. They also play tenacious defense lead by Jones who has fifteen steals on the year. North Texas comes into Extra Mile Arena on a 3-game winning streak, having recently bested Mississippi Valley State on Saturday, 79-48. They played in the Shriners Charleston Classic Tournament this year, losing to St. John’s and LSU, but both games were hard fought. They lost both games by a combined five points. This team lost some talent in the off-season, which contributed to the lower preseason poll rankings, but they are still a very talented team. read more: https://247sports.com/college/boise-state/article/coming-off-big-victory-broncos-hope-to-keep-momentum-against-the-mean-green-222355341/4 points

While I'm happy for the success of those walk-ons, I think this shows we've had a problem evaluating talent. Don't get me wrong - NO ONE always gets talent evaluation right. And almost every team has a walk-on that was misevaluated and later earned a scholarship. But NT has been having too many walk-ons outperforming scholarship guys.4 points
-
I’m sure this was meant to be a facetious comment.. but outside of Maclin, Ayo, Wilson, Miner and Febechi I don’t see staff losing any sleep over any one else that has hit portal so far. And 3 of the 5 I listed were walk ons and 1 of the others only offer out of portal was UNT. Sucks losing them. But it’s happening to everyone. There is over 1000 guys in portal right now. Almost 10 per team4 points

I really think it is a fluke situation. Of the five G5 champions SMU 11-2, Troy 11-2, Miami 11-2, Boise State 8-5. It's like when BYU won the national title in 1984. In all of I-A only three teams had less than two losses. BYU 13-0, Cal State Fullerton 11-1 who had two non-FBS wins, finished second in what became the Big West, and their best win was 7-4 Hawaii, and 9-1-1 Florida who was on probation and opened the season losing to Miami who finished 8-5 and tied LSU at Florida and LSU finished 8-3-1. Everyone else had two or more losses. ACC, Big Ten, and Pac-10 champs ended up with three losses 7-5 (6-2) Houston won tiebreaker to go to the Cotton over SMU and SMU finished 10-2 beating a 7-5 Notre Dame. SEC champ was 8-3-1. Everything fell perfect for BYU. If JMU had been allowed to be eligible and had beaten Troy then 12-1 JMU vs 13-0 Liberty is a debate but two win gap? Committee ain't going to spend time looking at a two win gap in the G5. Heck made this argument years ago and data backs it up 2016 Western Michigan got NY6 game with one loss when every other G5 champ had three or more. Marshall got passed for Boise State when Marshall was only one win better. The only time a team with 2 more wins has been passed over was 2020 but that was 11-0 Coastal Carolina vs 9-0 Cincinnati an inherently screwy situation thanks to Covid and based on the rankings, if 12 playoff with 6/6 format had been in place Coastal would have taken the last auto bid over 4-3 Oregon I'm not pleased that the fourth best champion per various computer rankings got the slot but it was a weird scenario.4 points

I'm just happy all these players have the freedom to make their own decisions and if financial windfall is their motivation for the hard work and sacrifice they've put in for years, well, they've earned it.4 points

Yes. This isn’t special to UNT. This is the new world. It’s a year by year deal. Just have to cheer for the jersey regardless of who is in it. Hopefully Morris and Company can upgrade where these guys are leaving. And to someone else’s point, a lot of these kids are going to be sitting with no team….it goes both ways.4 points

That’s a fair point. I just get really nervous when I see the university that I dearly love struggling so much!!4 points
