  1. Playing in a bowl game is my minimum expectation. Breaking into the Top 25 is my realistic hope for this program.

  2. You mean following a CUSA championship title game match? No. This is a big disappointment.

  3. Massive disappointment this season. Zero excuse to not be bowl eligible at minimum.

  4. We have to get past this mentality! we had a losing season. That is nothing to be excited/proud/or encouraged about.

  5. Can't blame him for taking the money. He held up his end of the deal by playing great and going to class and graduating. Good Luck to him. Next man up!

  6. I think there’s a big difference in having shame in being 5-7 and being proud of it. I’m neither proud of nor ashamed of our season. The FIU game is the one that I just can’t reconcile. Win that game and we’re 6-6 and playing in a bowl game in our first season in a new conference. I liked not getting our ass handed to us as many times as usual. And neither of our 20+ point losses were like the past few years where the game is over by halftime and we score meaningless points to cut the deficit to 20. We were in the Cal game until the TD with 7 seconds left in the first half seemed to deflate us. (But, yes, they hammered us). And the SMU game was competitive until we gifted them field position in the red zone in the 3rd quarter. Game went downhill hill after that. Most people thought we’d finish around .500 and be middle of the pack in the AAC. We did that with the most difficult conference schedule and now people want to shift expectations. Bottom line for me is this: I’ll take the 2023 team over the 2022 team all day, every day. This offense would shred that defense and Aune would gift us a pick 6 or throw at the WR feet on a big 3rd or 4th down conversion. Again, not proud nor ashamed, but looking forward to next season.

  7. Any word on Caponi hitting the transfer portal?

  8. With Eric Morris’ system, I’m not crying about losing any offensive player. When has this roster NOT had a star receiver? Heck, even the really bad Dodge teams had Casey Fitzgerald. Wide receivers grow on trees and their were dozens of guys sitting on the bench for P5 programs who could have the type of season that Maclin just had if you insert them in that role here. It is now Morris’ job to find them.

  11. if Caponi was not the highest paid DC in the G5, this conversation would be not as brutal, but Morris and Mosley paid him top $$$ for crap results, do not want to hear how he did not have the tools, if he did not have them , he should have hit the Portal and recruiting trails harder. Tired excuse, we paid Top $$$ for s**t results, that is why so many are pissed, if we paid him $200k, would not be as harsh.

  12. So true. Anything less than 50% against other FBS competition is a disappointment. I am not terribly distraught about this season, but it would be ridiculous to be content (long term) with 4-7 records against FBS schools. I do agree with NTSU52 though, there were times in our history when 5-7 would have been accepted. I believe we're past that. We'll see. It'll show in the hustle of the staff during the offseason.

  13. Maclin has stated that he was close to quitting football when he decided to transfer here. He is appreciative of what he was able to accomplish and for rediscovering his love of the game. Outside of that, I hate the portal. I am thankful I got to watch people like Patrick Cobbs, Johnny Quinn, Booger Kennedy, Cody Spencer, etc. for four or five years here. Those days are long gone because of this bullshit.

  14. I hope he has the same success as Mr Shorter did this season

  15. Yes there is. There's plenty of "shame". NT was preparing for the C-USA Championship game and then a bowl game at this time last year. We got there in a rocky way, but we got there. That finish was deemed to be not good enough last year, and changes were made... TO MAKE US BETTER. NT regressed. TX St. finished last year with 4 wins. That finish was deemed to be not good enough, and changes were made to make them better. TX St. improved. Vastly. While there are bright spots to look forward to next year (along with plenty to worry about, especially defensively), this season was definitely not a success.

  16. There are so many excuses for not supporting this program financially it gets exhausting. I’m just thankful we tax the students and don’t give them a choice. Otherwise, this program would be FCS or D2. ”I’ll support the program when <insert random measure of success>.”

  17. That's just an excuse for failure. The offense didn't have what they needed either. We haven't had a real QB since Mason Fine graduated. But, those coaches did their job and went out and found the right pieces and we ended up with the 8th best offense in the nation. Rogers wasn't just sitting on the bench for the past 3 years. No, our offensive coaches evaluated our needs and went and got him from the portal. Our special teams coaches went out and grabbed Rauschenberg from the portal. Caponi didn't do his job. He didn't adequately evaluate his players and he didn't go get the players he needed to field a successful defense. He failed at his job. And he was paid more than ever other assistant coach in the Group of 5. That's an embarrassment. And, that's entirely on him. Caponi doesn't deserve another year at UNT. He should be fired.

  18. Or gratitude for taking a 1-11 program and leaving it as a 7-6 conference title and bowl contender.

  19. I keep expecting to see some of our "fans" enter the portal.

  20. How do you think we would have done this past season if we didn't pull Rogers out of the portal ourselves? It works both ways.

  21. Not that it's none of your damn budiness, but my daughter has been in and out again hospitalized since November 3rd. Sorry I didn't run to gmg to find you and glamor over beating 2 terrible football teams. The season was lost right when we lost to FIU.

  22. You get hired for a job. You aren’t provided the necessary tools (players in this case) to do your job and have to make do in year one. They hired you to run a system but those tools aren’t here and won’t be until the following year. What do you do? Do you do the best with what you are provided or do you change to a system that you are not familiar with and try to learn that on the fly for just one year until your pieces arrive? Something to consider.

  23. Context is everything. What had Vegas set as the win total? Looks like it was 6, so ballpark but below. Looking at the schedule before the season with clear glass rather than green lenses what was your worst case, best case, and most likely predictions. Where did you finish vs the pre-season predictions? The coaches picked UNT 7th. Actual finish 8th again at least in the ballpark. I think in your shoes, I'm unhappy but cautiously optimistic. From an outsider standpoint, losing to a bad FIU is the difference between nailing the expected win total and falling short.

  24. Next man up. The reality of G5 ball these days.

  25. He was the G5 nightmare. Only posted two consecutive losing seasons. His second and third year which is excusable and then 2019 and the covid mess of 2020. Never good enough to get hired away, never bad enough to be an obvious fire. Final record of 113-111 sums his career. Almost good but not quite. Shared a title in 2006 when Troy beat them in Troy 21-20, had a shot to win Sun Belt outright in 2012 and got blown out by A-State in the season finale. 2018 had the CUSA title game at home and lost to UAB 27-25 after beating UAB on that same field 27-3 the week before. Figure losing last five vs WKU sunk him though going 0-4 vs the CUSA newcomers couldn't have helped him either. Fun fact, he was there 18 years and the AD who hired him also fired him.

  26. Yall don't have a bad team. The difference between 5-7 and 7-5 is razor thin. You've got a QB to build around which is one of the greatest predictors of future success. Need to bring in some defensive difference makers that fit the system your running, especially more beef on the DL.

  27. So true. We would be bowling if we hadn't worn black and pooped the bed against FIU.

  28. Meh, if it’s personnel (as I tend to think it is) then a good coach isn’t going to publicly throw players under the bus. If it’s making any staff changes, again, he’s not going to say anything publicly until they make a change. So what are you wanting those talking points to be?
    5 points
  29. I think he means it isn’t beyond the possibility that a UNT team can win enough to be with those kind of teams. It is a realistic hope. It has to be/ should be. Otherwise, what are we really even doing?!

  31. I think it says a lot about North Texas that the conversations between JMac, family and close friends were long conversations. That said, it was fun watching 9. (support the school, the program, the jersey.....everything else is temporary) GMG

  33. Texas State went 2-2 in non-conference last year, they went 2-2 this year. Last year 2-6 in Sun Belt losing three of those by a combined 10 points, this year 4-4. Last year lost at ULM 31-30 this year beat them 21-20. Last year lost at Troy by 6 this year at home by 18. Texas State improved, no argument, but it wasn't a vast improvement.

  34. I will take this 5-7 over another season of Seth. I see growth, a great QB, and fan communication and things we didn't have the last couple years. Now, about that defense....

  35. This is the horrid mindset that has mired North Texas in mediocrity for a century now. We are a top-4 size university in a football-crazy state. The 80s and 90s damaged the brand terribly, but that was 30 years ago. UCF didn't even have a football program 30 years ago. App State has gone from FCS to national visibility in under a decade. Liberty is a TOP 20 team, and has only been in FBS since 2018. Everyone else can improve. Why, oh why, do UNT fans accept .500 (or less!) football as a goal?

  39. That is what I believe this program can attain on the high-end. I think it can be done. I DON’T think we can win a national championship in football for many reasons, but best case we can have a James Madison-type run and break the Top 25. And on the low-end, I expect to play in some bowl game every season. This season did not meet that criteria and was thus unacceptable.

  40. Gee, we end the season with wins against Tulsa and UAB. Guess who didn’t have a thing to say in either of those threads.

  41. There’s plenty of shame in this season. But we got an exceptionally bad hand in the conference schedule, not sure who to blame for that. There was going to be a dropoff due to changeover and adjustment, but that was needed in order to have a chance to really progress in the future. And I wouldn't want to trade places with ECU for example. So despite a strong dose of shame, on balance at this point I’m not wearing a bag and I think they will do considerably better next year.

SMU fanbase really showed up to support the best season in decades on Saturday 🙄 maybe when the last home game is against Boston College people will finally care *sarcasm*
