  1. Sept 2 would be a great day for a White-Out game. Use the white with lime green flying worm throwbacks and let Cal wear their dark blue uniforms

  2. If you want to be seen on the bigger ESPN networks, you have to go where they ask. This should be a decisive advantage for us late in the game.

  3. Buy season tickets and sit on the shady side. It will still be hot, but not as hot as general admission. Also, look at the Dolphins/Bills game early last year. The Dolphins outlasted the Bills and the heat was a major factor. Hopefully it will be again. This time the Mean Green prevail and the Bears wilt.

  7. Lawrence Edward Blanton passed away in Kerrville, TX on May 26, 2023. Born in San Perlita, TX in 1936 to Esther Ruth and John Luther Blanton, his father was taken when Lawrence was only 3 months old. At 3 years old, his mother would go on to marry Orville May, a man whom Lawrence loved immensely, and who loved and raised Lawrence as his own. He graduated from Raymondville High School in 1954 and went on to North Texas State on a football scholarship - he would ultimately go on to receive his Master's Degree in Education. He proudly served in the US Army from 1957-1961. He then met the love of his life, Zola Gail Larson, and they married in 1963. He was a beloved teacher in La Sara and San Perlita for many years before moving with his family to teach in Japan in 1980, and then taught in Germany. This journey would take him to over 20 countries in 17 years, finally retiring to Kerrville Texas in 1997. Never without a story to tell or a joke to crack, Lawrence would tell you everything there was to know about classical music or a historical event if you had the time - sometimes, a few times. There was seldom an opportunity for a laugh or a chuckle that was missed. Lawrence would always take the time to remind you that "some got it, and some don't" - he had it. He is survived by his wife of 60 years Zola Gail, his two children Laura May (Blanton) Harvey, John Larson Blanton, his sister Linda Nell (May) Shaar, son-in-law Michael Turner Harvey, daughter-in-law Lisa Ann (Knopp) Blanton, 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Memorial services are 5/31 at 10AM at Kerrville's Inn of the Hills; in lieu of flowers please make donations to Dietert Center's Meals on Wheels program in Kerrville.

  8. Wasn't Indiana the game we won, after being down in the first half? Thinking of the early season afternoon game. Opponent was in the sun the whole game and we were conditioned for it. Back Jack, do it again. GMG

  10. When I decided to attend the University of North Texas, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. Everybody seemed to have it figured out, but as I scrolled through the list of majors to decide my fate for the next four years of my life, all I knew was that I liked to write. Eventually, I landed upon journalism. At my high school just north of San Antonio, I was a marching band nerd and was never involved in the yearbook or school paper. Writing was the one thing I clung to, and before I knew it, I was writing weekly news articles for the North Texas Daily at UNT and loving every moment of it. After a summer news reporting internship at the Denton Record-Chronicle, I was asked to be a freelance sports reporter for the paper to assist in writing high school football recaps. I barely knew what a first down was, but before I knew it, I was sitting in press boxes and interviewing players and coaches on Friday nights. I went on to cover the National Invitation Tournament-winning North Texas basketball team for the Daily, and wrote various sports stories and features throughout my final semester. I had the pleasure of covering the three-time Conference USA champion women’s golf team, and some of the top ranked collegiate track and field athletes in the country. read more: https://www.wcmessenger.com/articles/a-new-journey-begins/

  12. I was watching a college golf broadcast and they were talking about Pepperdine and how hood they historically were but how this year they were even better because of what they were able to do with the portal. A good college golf team in past years might have 4-5 top notch players. Now Pepperdine has 8-9 or even 10. It made me sad.

  15. The Friday night lights aren't reserved exclusively for high school football. ESPN 2 is set to air North Texas and SMU's showdown at 8 p.m. on Friday, November 10 from Gerald J. Ford Stadium in the heart of Dallas. SMU has dominated the "Safeway Bowl" since the two teams renewed their annual contest in 2014, winning seven of nine. Historically, these games haven't been nail-biters, the closest margin of victory coming in 2016 when SMU outlasted the Mean Green 34-21. Last year was no exeception. The Mustangs raced to a 24-3 lead with just under five minutes remaining in the first half and cruised to a 48-10 victory. SMU quarterback Tanner Mordecai carved the North Texas secondary for 432 yards and four touchdowns, one of which was a 51-yard strike to returning wide receiver Jordan Kerley. read more: https://www.texasfootball.com/article/2023/05/31/game-time-announced-for-smu-vs-north-texas?ref=article_preview_img

  21. Just in terms of media money and roster/scholarship limits, these two sports might as well be in different galaxies. Not saying you're wrong, but if NIL benefits the richest programs, there has to be better examples. You don't need to reach over to golf find an argument.

  23. Transfers to Dynamic Prep in Irving where former NBA All-Star Jermaine O'Neal will be his head coach. I hope we hold on to him. Also wouldn't mind if we could land the commitment of his new teammate, Jermaine O'Neal Jr. Back to Washington, he keeps ascending. Just strikes me as one of those guys who wins in life. Eager to see that come true when he arrives on campus.

  24. Flipped his commitment to Duke. So long, young man! https://247sports.com/college/duke/Article/Duke-lands-commitment-from-FCS-All-American-OL-Jacob-Long-210926149/ "Duke lands commitment from FCS All-American OL Jacob Long by Adam Rowe 61 minutes ago Duke has only brought in three players via the transfer portal that have stuck on the roster thus far, but they convinced an FCS All-American Offensive Lineman to flip his commitment from University of North Texas today."

  25. This once again circles back to an ongoing problem: our inability to keep recent grads engaged. If we can get 5% of our grads to remain lifelong engaged fans, our program would be exponentially better off. Not sure why we aren't pushing this hard. Maybe we are and GM is not seeing it. I remember at the beginning of the Wren administration, he and SL were presenting themselves at every freshman orientation. Does that still happen, but with Mosley and Co.?

  26. And I can confirm that a VERY large percentage of the Kids you are referring to we lost due to the lack of NIL funding. Kids are not taking less money to go anywhere. North Texas will take off when we take advantage of alumni numbers. It doesn't have to be huge amounts with our large alumni base. Just needs more numbers donating. It can't be 4 or 5 big donors and expect to compete.

  27. Great to see the football GPA up last semester. I would be curious to see a breakdown of the majors the players are pursuing. I only hope their majors will prepare them for life after college football and, in a few cases maybe after pro ball. I have seen too many college athletes advised to take the major whose courses would most easily accomodate practice schedules rather than prepare for the future. I hope our academic advising at UNT is strong in thinking of the student first and the athlete second. Not saying it isn't...don't know...just know stats aren't always what they seem. GMG in the classroom and on the field/court/pool/course/etc.

  28. @cousin oliver just my humble 0.02, but when providing articles and quotes from said articles, I would put link/source first (bonus if you provide author), ahead of the main content/quote. It's just a flow thing: helps setup the reader to understand this is not you speaking/thinking. 30. There were around 30 players last season who were a part of the collective in its first operational year. The obvious goal is to fund and help it grow well to beyond that capacity.

  31. We are starting to be included a lot more with TCU and SMU than we have in the past. I am speaking to high school coaches and players as well as camp selections. Not saying we will win all of those battles but we will land some. Under Seth, a lot of players just skipped Denton and hit TCU and SMU instead.

  32. I'm not dismissing the quality of the top programs in C-USA. UNT, UAB, and especially FAU were good enough to compete in any conference in the country, but the rest of C-USA was fairly mediocre to downright awful. In the Big12 there will be no UTSA's on his basketball schedule. That conference is a gauntlet, and he will play against teams ever night that won't have to double team him to shut him down. Perry was great for UNT, but the Big12 has plenty of film on him now. None of those teams are going to give him an inch of space in the closing seconds of games. They saw what he did to Oklahoma State at the NIT.

  33. C-USA Softball is now bush-league. Judy should be embarrassed by the lack of integrity shown by her umpires. That MT runner was out at the plate, and both camera angles proved it. I'm done with C-USA. I can't wait to see those AAC logos on our facilities.

  34. I dont think a faster pace favors TP. He is not a super athletic guy, just highly skilled. He will function there the same way he did here, highly efficient and clutch.

  35. Some require proof because their feelings are hurt. Makes no dang sense. He was the best player on one of the best mid-majors and won the NIT, beating 2 high-majors on the way. No reason to believe he can't compete in the Big 12.

  40. It is not just the heat; we have much better attendance with 6 pm games. If it's a hot day this game will likely have more Cal fans than Green for Coach Morris's first game.

  41. This conversation on LK was great. Generally our biggest problem in athletics trace back to spirit of our Alumni base. How valuable is our alumni network versus the schools our best players are transferring to? Having a guy transfer to one of the best 25 brands in football isn't a problem imo. But losing guys to Baylor and SMU is disappointing.

  42. Haha... nah. Not really at all. I just don't roll with the 'pander to the new staff, current staff, stale staff, should've been fired staff, etc with 100% benefit of the doubt' ALL. THE. TIME. It's the same characters spittin the same ole bs. If it all sounds depressing or negative, then they can always fix it. Until then, basketball be rollin.

  43. Way it was before NIL. The way it is with NIL. Look at a gigantic percentage of our student body and alum base. You really think they give a damn about athletics. Like, just look at them. Like, really-really, look.
