  1. If Seth wins agasinst a big home crowd as an underdog against SMU can he be forgiven for his past failures?

  3. Defense rips the tangs a new *ss and forces two fumbles and an interception. Running game and well timed over the middle pass catches lead to a 24-20 victory for our Mean Green Eagles!!! GO MEAN GREEN!!! WIN GAMES!!!!!!!!!

  5. I agree. We have generally done a good job of keeping the top performers from those 19-21 recruiting classes that were at or near the top of CUSA, and we have swapped out the underperformers with guys from the portal. By my count we have about 11 guys who are 3+ year starters, plus our kicker and punter. This 11 also doesn’t include Adaway, Crosby, and some other guys who have starting experience back to the 2020 season. Yeah the number could be even higher if we had been able to keep the Murphy twins and Jacob Brammer, but it’s still very impressive continuity, especially in the era of the transfer portal. 11 starters in their third season of starting, and we still have a lot of eligibility among our starters. Only 5 of our starting 22 are seniors. 6 if you count Aune. So that continuity should pay dividends beyond this season.

  10. I enjoyed the hell out of this interview. It's nice when coaches actually get to talk shop and roster and individual guys. You can see he's also enjoying the conversation. Cool to peek behind the curtain with the UNT Baskbetball Mastermind himself.

  11. Good stuff. Talks about the last few seasons and what to expect this upcoming season. He said he wants to get more players playing time…so there’s that. Love his enthusiasm for UNT. Glad he’s here.

  12. This series is bigger than just a football game on the schedule. What happened way back in 1990 is just another example of this. Shout out to @PlummMeanGreenfor providing this archived video from the battle in Denton. IMG_0132.MOV

  15. Brett Tulloss, a UNT alumnus and longtime member of GoMeanGreen under the handle GreenBat, died on August 21 at age 58: https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/universal-city-tx/brett-tulloss-10903439?fbclid=IwAR3q_AinpH7kAd6ysq53RfRbt564LI-vSNtFYbKBwOyqD1oUv4vXi7zHkrE I was on the NT Daily staff with Brett in the late 1980s. We bonded there as Mean Green fans and joined GoMeanGreen 11 days apart in 2002. Brett loved sports and a good argument (as many of us here can attest). He collected jerseys and donated Cody Spencer's Blue-Grey game jersey to the UNT Hall of Fame in 2009. Spencer played so well in the game he was drafted in the sixth round by the Raiders. Brett found his game jersey up for auction and decided it ought to be seen by all Mean Green fans: https://meangreensports.com/news/2009/10/15/Green_Gang_Fan_s_Jersey_Donation_Adding_To_NT_Hall_Of_Fame The last time I saw Brett in college we were leaving a drunken off-campus gathering of student newspaper reprobates and he was loudly giving hell to a Cowboys fan. That was another of his favorite hobbies.

  16. Great conversation. Everyone should take the time and listen to this. THIS is what a face of the Athletics Program head coach looks and sounds like. There's a reason that I continue to advocate for UNT dumping more and more resources into the basketball program. We've got our guy. Build this man a state of the art basketball arena.

  17. It is a joke. Playing time the last game really just means you're getting cut and they don't want roster players getting hurt before the season starts.

  18. I will miss Brett Tulloss as well as Carlos Leal(standing two to the left of Brett here), who we lost back in ‘18. Those two knew more sports trivia than anyone I ever knew. I once told them while we were all at a bar if they didn’t shut up talking so much nerdy sports trivia we were never gonna get laid. I had to post this pic from the Daily I remembered having which had them both at a game at Fouts. When Brett started covering local HS football teams for the DRC I would go with him to spot and do stats. One time we nearly froze half to death in a blizzard in an open press box at Mineral Well’s old Miller Stadium during a playoff game. Most learned that if you spent enough time with Brett some kind of crap was bound to happen to you sooner or later and with me it always did.. One of the stories I can publicly share…He once got the PA gig at Fouts for a first round 3A playoff game between SL Carroll & Frisco and he asked me to spot & do stats for him. And of course, from the very start SLC started drilling the hell out of Frisco and Brett was having to constantly say The Dragons did this….The Dragons did that. Everything was Dragons! Dragons! Dragons!, and Brett was starting to feel bad for Frisco and their fans, and he was chomping at the bit to finally get to say something positive for them. Finally, at one point Frisco put a drive together and advanced the ball to about the SLC 25 yard line…and Brett announced it as…”And the Racoons Are Scratching At The Back Screen Door!”…. and I looked at him like WTF???? Suddenly the door to the press box swung open and a little old lady with a cane, who had to be in her late 70’s to 80’s stumbled in and started chewing Brett’s ass out something fierce for “Being so one sided and so damn negative to Frisco High!”,…and as she yelled at him she leaned over Brett like she was gonna start beating the shit out of him. Brett was so shocked, he kept shrinking in that chair thinking she was gonna smack him, and he stumbled and fumbled through what had to be 20 apologies trying to explain himself and she was having none of it.. I nearly hurt myself trying to hold back the laughter and not instigate it further. Anyhow, lots of good times I’ll never forget. RIP GreenBat. Rick

  19. Back on topic, I would hope for around 28,000+ considering our Week 0 win, smuT being the opponent and their fans wanting to see the new coach, etc...

  20. I took a quick glance back through this thread, and there are only 2 people that took issue with it: The OP: Meangreenfaninno Cousin Oliver's "girlfriend" Every single other post defended it (with a brief derailing to Jerry Sandusky?), or an introspective diagnosis that PB does it because of his own wardrobe insecurities. EDIT: I think you may have been trying to set up the tired old "Boomer VS Millennial" argument... it's just not there. Heck, even your arch-nemesis @Coffee and TV was on board.

  22. Here's my take. If you want a better press conference, ask better questions. Listen to how the questions are phrased. Almost every one of them can be answered with a simple yes or no. Basically, the questions are long-winded and loaded with the opinion/perspective of the interviewer with leading questions which essentially asks the coach or payer to confirm the "analysis" of the interviewer. The questions are like, "The <insert one of [OL, DL, secondary, running backs, etc.]> really played well last night and controlled the game. Would you say the addition of <insert player name here> helped improve the play of this group?" Answer: "Yes. Next." The interviewee is led down a path the interviewer wants to talk about instead of asking a more open-ended question and letting the interviewee respond. That's why these press conferences are so monotonous IMHO.

  25. La Tech probably had around 2-3K at the 2018 game and UTSA had a very strong showing last year. Maybe 2K? SMU hasn’t come close to that. I honestly don’t think they’ve even cracked 1K. They even know their showings in Denton suck.

  26. Hall will have a shot at the Chargers' practice squad because of his special teams play. He actually looked much better in coverage in the preseason than he did last year in spot duty. Hamilton was considered one of the last 2 cuts so he should resign somewhere.

  29. What a weird topic. In leadership, you establish a culture of trust. I tell my guys all the time that we are never there to push down but to build up, even if that includes some breaking down. How you take it is up to you. In a very high intensity and highly emotional sport, that absolutely applies. I feel that PB has earned their trust, and they have earned his to the point that these "breaking downs" can still be emotionally supportive. I imagine these defensive players are playing hard for Phil, and he seems to show a lot of love and compassion for them outside of game time. If you built the right level of trust and support, then this type of leadership can absolutely heighten the emotional drive and push the competitive nature. Or maybe they're a snowflake who chooses to see it as pushing you down.

  30. Feel like he didn't get a fair shake. They actually cut him before the last preseason game. He didn't touch the ball in the first game after he was signed either. He only got touches in 1 preseason game. Philly's garbage anyways.

  36. Notes From the 1990 SMU-UNT game. ••• First of all—NORTH TEXAS WON THE GOL’DARNED FOOTBALL GAME, 14-7! It was..... “Davis to Pegram”, “Davis to Pegram”, “Davis to Pegram” all—night—long! ••• That SMU-UNT video clip came from a VHS (turned into a DVD) that I taped from the “live” TV game back in 1990. I gave the DVD to some guy from the “Beyond the Green” TV series who was at one of Harry’s pregame tailgate gatherings. He said he would have it digitized, but not sure if he ever did. (Did you)? 🙄 ••• A UNT fan (& GMG member) turned the clip into a YouTube video short. I can’t find it on YouTube now, but at one time I did see it there. Wonder where it went? Did it seem too much a product of free market capitalism to be able to stay on YouTube?😱 (Can I say that)?😳 ••• Some SMU fan named Lawrence Perkins during the week of that 1990 Fouts Field classic wrote a lengthy “Letter to the NT Daily” editor teasing the North Texas football team & it’s fans about how the ‘Stangs were going to take care of business at Fouts Field at the forthcoming Saturday night matchup. A question some asked: Was Lawrence Perkins an SMU fake or a plant? Only the Green Shadow knows. Moving on... ••• That SMU-UNT game was televised “live” & still sold out. SMU alum Alan Stone & national TV broadcaster Merle Harmon were the broadcast team on Channel 21 (or was it 27) that evening. Both did a fine unbiased job. (Wish Apogee would have been around at the time). ••• Some have said fans were actually turned away from this game lest the Denton Fire Marshall write up our favorite school. Not sure of the validity of that. •••GMG member & frequent poster “drex’s” UNT battle flag creation (also used in the Paramount movie “Necessary Roughness” which was filmed at UNT) was also prominent throughout the 1990 SMU-UNT game; anyway, anyone else happen to notice how other Texas FBS schools have since copied drex’s idea by creating Texas flags in all their own respective school colors &/or school logos)?👏👏 WAY TO GO, JIM “drex” HOBDY! ••• As I recall, FFR (FireFightin’Rick) carried the battle flag that night & was very effectively firing up the UNT student side with it. (Correct, FFR)? ❇️🦅❇️ GMG!
