I'm not overly optimistic. However, the man has taken us to almost 50% (5 of 12, I believe) of our bowl games. Yes, he's lost them all. But we were playing December football under him 5 of the 12 times in our school history. That's a tip of the hat to him, but also eye opening to how poor of a football program we have. I think if he continues taking his team to bowl games, especially given our history, you have to keep him on board. Eventually, the stars will align for that elusive 10-win season/bowl championship. With that said, he's done such a mediocre job, the moment we're 4-8 and watching from the couch he has to go. So, IMO, SL has put himself in a tough position and it's certainly of his own doings.

Give the rolling eyes all you want to but the truth is when players leave this program people gush over them and follow them and give updates and yet when we sign players everyone want to point out their faults.

September 27, 2008 sitting in Rice Stadium watching a team that was woefully ill-prepared lose 77-20. October 10, 2016. Was given tickets to the Club Level. My youngest son and I then sat through a complete thrashing to freaking Portland State. Having our administration relegate us to D1AA and the Southland Conference. Sitting in Fouts many times when I could have thrown handfuls of gravel and not hit a soul. We are down but far, far from an all-time low.

The current one-time transfer exception is not good for college football. Even professional athletes have contracts that bind them to teams for certain time periods and allow organizations a fair opportunity to build a winning roster. A transfer model must be adopted that offers athletes the option to explore other opportunities, but still incentivizes schools to invest in and develop players. I propose a model where all players have the opportunity to transfer and be immediately eligible AFTER they have accumulated the equivalent of 60 credit hours at their current institution AND again after they graduate (if they still have eligibility remaining). If a player declines to transfer when they hit the 60 hours, that player loses the opportunity to transfer and be eligible immediately until they are a grad transfer. Any player may elect to transfer during the transfer window at ANY point in their career, but transferring before or after your “free” 60 hour transfer or “free” grad transfer will cause you to sit out a year AND lose a year of eligibility. Hardship waivers are no longer available for anyone. If your dog gets sick and you want to transfer, too bad. If someone in your social studies class looks at you funny, too bad. If your favorite coach gets hired somewhere else, too bad. You can still transfer during any transfer window, but there are consequences for doing so outside of your “free” opportunities. The transfer window also opens and closes in the spring. Let’s say it is open from February 15-April 15. If you opt to explore your transfer option when you are eligible, you cannot participate in offseason workouts or spring football at your current school and you must sign with your new school by X date to be eligible for the next football season. If you do not sign by X date, you must wait until the next year’s transfer window and lose a year of eligibility or you may drop down a level to Juco, FCS, DII, DIII and be eligible immediately. The 60 hours must be accumulated AT the current institution. If you graduate high school with 30 hours of college credit, that doesn’t count. Everyone starts at 0 towards the transfer requirement when they enroll at their school. This proposed transfer model allows players who fulfill their obligations as student athletes the freedom to fulfill their athletic potential while also rewarding schools for the investments they make in these players to adequately plan and build winning rosters.

I had/have several jobs, one for 35 years with the same employer. Never had to sign a contract with any of them. I could quit whenever I wanted. An athletic scholarship, however, does require a contract, and a firm commitment on the part of both the school and the athlete. It's really not as hard to understand as you're making it out to be.

The difference between now and previous downtimes is that now just feels hopeless. Any decent player we get, will just leave us for more money. How much would a P5 school have paid for a sophomore Brandon Kennedy or a freshman Jamario Thomas or a junior Mason Fine? Hard to invest in this when you get gut-punched by your all conference linebacker transferring (at the end of June!). I don’t know what the solution is, or if there will be a solution. All I know is that since the selfishness of NIL and the transfer portal hit college football, I care about it less and less.

Am I the only one that this guy started to lose a little bit of credibility when he never mentioned Tommy Bush, but then lost all credibility when he said we have one of the top WR corps in the Sunbelt?? Lol

I have a suggestion. If a player transfers and gets a NIL at the new school, they have to pay the original school the cost of attendance for the time spent. If they are going to use as as farm teams, they should have to provide some compensation.

Y'all are in an ugly place. Maybe it's wisdom, maybe it's stupidity, but with the money we are spending and with Wren in charge, I can carry confidence through this adversity unlike any previous administration/generation. When we were getting hew HCs under RV, usually after a awful situation that involved firing the previous HC, I never felt this confidence. I was always like, "Well, crap let's hope the next guy is a home run but it's probably just another next-in-line-to-be-fired guy."

Well deserved. No need for a new $90 mil arena (save the money for a Real football coach!!), the SuperPit is a great venue, just needs some tweaks.

I have absolutely no clue how nil works. But could we all donate a modest amount to make an nil deal to a player or 2. Maybe help keep our own in the wake of KD leaving? Not sure if that's even possible but would love to explore options.

A scholarship is a contract, which includes stipulations. So is joining the Marines, or buying a car, or getting married, etc. They can quit the contract, but there could be penalties. Time for them to grow up, or don't sign a contract!

You make some very valid points. Although NT Football can have down years (like the past 3 years), we are in a geographic area that allows quick recovery with the right head coach (which we don't currently have). Similar to Smut's situation, good and awful phases recently. I do think our lack of SWC membership stigma is finally starting to fade. The Big?12 continues to morph and with each change the old SWC glory days becomes more fuzzy. Next year we join Smut in a conference. Also same with Memphis, again. We have reached another level, even as bad as we have been.

I agree some restrictions over the timing of free transfers needs to be implemented, but this is just silly and you guys hold 19 year olds to much higher standards than yourself. Your reasoning that athletes need to stay where they decide to go when they are 17/18 years old and nobody else has to is what? The school is offering them a scholarship so they should be forced to stay? Do you think students on academic scholarships should have the same limits? The extremely large majority of student athletes transferring schools is because they aren't getting playing time, many find the grass isn't always greener on the other side but they should have that right to do that if they want. You mentioned professional athletes as a comparison to these students, but forgot to mention the biggest difference..they are getting paid. A scholarship is not payment and never will be. Why should athletic scholarships be viewed any differently than academic or band or anything else? When an athlete transfers they lose their scholarship and it's up to another institution to determine if they are worth another one, just like any other student. And no hardship waivers?? You have to be kidding. I totally agree the waiver program is broken, and more often than not the NCAA passes waivers for transfers to bigger schools regardless of the reason. But to rob a kid who has a dying parent or loved one of the opportunity to be closer to their family is absurd. Everyone here is passionate about UNT I get that, and losing a player like KD at this time of year sucks and those people who tampered with him should be punished. But if he had left 3+ months ago I wouldn't be upset and none of you should be either. Lots of hurt feelings around here simply because we lost a good player, but I didn't see anyone crying about the system when we landed transfers from Georgia, Arkansas, Missouri, Nebraska, LA Tech, North Carolina, Texas Tech, Alabama, the list goes on and on.

The money/media environment is incredibly bloated but, by and large, the blue bloods are who they are because they have always been the ones spending the most money.

Yes, sad, we can never feel secure with star players again. It's too easy now for kids to be recruited away to other programs while in a program, either with the lure of NIL $ or the chance to play on a bigger stage. There needs to be designated time-limit windows, and perhaps compensation to a losing school, in both cases.

Not gonna argue he loses some luster on his Mean Green legacy. The larger point I’m trying to make is that he gave us 4 seasons, include 3 starting seasons, same for Brammer, and that benefitted us more than him leaving hurt us. Fans can hate them for leaving, I don’t care. But obviously I look at things from the recruiting angle and Brammer and Davis seem to invoke fear of recruiting high school players now. We can’t look at the signees in this age as “not working out” just because they Transfer. What did they give us while they were here? Not saying you are making this claim, just clarifying my point. I’m not saying both move back to Mike. Just one of them. Most likely Wood, like you said. But the positions aren’t that different. The best two will be on the field, which could be Brown but only if he’s better, not just because that’s where he was in the spring and they weren’t.

This should have been done a long time ago. IMO, as great as Mean Joe Greene was/is, the barrier Haynes & King broke through at North Texas is infinitely more important. And Haynes as a monster in his own right. Kudos to Baker & all involved in finally getting something like this done. Go Mean Green!

A change was made immediately afterward. We knew a change was coming. That was the lowest point of NT Football as a program, but fan morale the day after was not as low as it is now.

Such a weird card to play. I've had jobs to do that I didn't want to work, but I did them anyways. The difference here is, the burden is on SL to totally fake out 80+ student-athletes who are itching to see whether you are sincere or not. If SL is half-assing this job, he's fooling a ton of people that have incredible insight.

IMO, you're wrong. He barely kept his job last year at 6-6 and won't be brought back if he repeats that. It gets murky at 7-5. It would probably depend on how competitive we are in our losses. Like if we lose to the 5 best teams on our schedule by double digits I don't think Littrell is brought back. Or if we lose ANOTHER bowl game to finish at 7-6 then I think Wren Baker will decide to move on. You can't fundraise with a .500 program.
