Us moving to a new conference will have absolutely zero to do with whether we are currently "hot" in football. So many other things will weigh more heavily than whether we won 9 games or 4 games the last several seasons.9 points

UTSA is not even in the same line as UNT when it comes to conference realignment. They have very little in facilities and a small athletic budget. As Emmitt said, two years of football records does not make a conference switch happen...if it did, Boise State would have named their conference choice by now.7 points

Yes, North Texas needs to improve football, but... North Texas is has won one of it's five bowl games since joining CUSA, UTSA has lost it's only two. And although the series is tied at four wins each, North Texas has won three of the last four. North Texas is competitive for CUSA championships in every other sport, while amazingly, I don't think UTSA has won a single championship, or even a western division championship in any sport in eight years since joining the conference. North Texas has amazing facilities for a G5 school, UTSA has nothing; just an old basketball gym and a covered playground for football. UTSA plays it's football rent free in an aging city owned Alamodome dozens of miles from campus and there's no telling how much longer San Antonio will even pay for maintaining that decrepit money pit. Basically, UTSA is not superior to North Texas in any sport, and is not even comparable in anything other than football.6 points

If this UT, Oklahoma move to the SEC takes place, someone mentioned Memphis, Cincy, UCF, Houston, etc., taking their spots in the Big 12. Houston I could see. But what is so special about Memphis, Cincy, or UCF? TV eyes? I just don't see where those three schools are so special when it comes to football.4 points

Houston and Cincy. West Virginia wants a travel partner plus these were the two finalist when the Big !2 looked at adding 2 teams a few years ago. SMU brings nothing to the table other than being located in Dallas, which I doubt would big that big of a deal based upon lack of attendance and community support. No one really wants private schools unless they are Southern Cal.4 points

It's not a question of which two schools the big 12 would take to replace Texas and Oklahoma. No two schools have that kind of value. Instead, you should be asking yourselves which four to six schools will they take.4 points

until the B1G and Pac12 raid the leftovers. Tech and Oklahoma State bail to the Pac12, KU to B1G and WVU to ACC all would be my guess. I think there's a salvageable league there that would be an improvement from the AAC for an SMU/Houston/Memphis with Baylor, TCU, Iowa State, K-State...could definitely see something like that happening, and I'd love it. Edit: if I had to add more teams to round out that hypothetical conference, I'd say Cincinnati and Boise St. would be candidates (though last I checked their TV situation is still favorable), and UCF3 points

You aren't wrong, no one out there is equal to the Texas and Oklahoma. The big 12 is going to take a big financial hit to its tv deal, but it'll still be a step up from AAC for those that make it.3 points

It seems this is happening really fast....the upper level (have had success lately, been ranked) G5 schools are going to have stop thinking there will be a place at this new table and they need to start thinking about geography. All the non P5 schools in Texas are actually in a good spot compared to others. The challenge is with the lower tier P5 schools. They will have to be forced out of this new world. This will be fascinating to watch.3 points

LIfer, that has been the basis for just about all of my criticism of the GB for the last 15 years .....or more. I originally bonded with the version that was there mainly because of the power/authority of Mr. McAdow. From what "letsgiveacheer" has said and/or hinted at, if the most talented musicians coming into the College of music wanted a chance to ascend to the elite ensembles that they sought, they had to spend at least one semester marching in the band. And Mr. McAdow was the gate keeper on that system. When you get your band from a pool of talent like that, 120 (and 8 alternates) is more than enough. Looking back, and knowing how bureaucracies operate, I am in awe that Mr. McAdow acquired that kind of power. Having said all that, I have met and talked with "Fessor Cook" and I have confidence that he's going to give us and/or develop one of the finest football bands in the Southwest. Because, if "Letsgiveacheer" approves, then so do I.2 points

I’ve posted about this since 2012, when A&M and Mizzou left. The Big XII would die by 2025 because there aren’t enough eyeballs and the teams don’t mesh well together. I still think this noise from Texas and OU is a smokescreen, though. I think they both know that getting into the SEC would be really tough—you have to have 11 yes votes and I know A&M and Mizzou are no’s. Does Arkansas and LSU want more completion in their backyard? Do Florida, South Carolina, Georgia, and Kentucky want to run the risk of losing their state to another in-state rival, something the SEC has adamantly opposed for a long time now? I still think this is to get the B1G or PAC on board with taking them and maybe a few others. If it’s the B1G Ten, it’s probably just Texas and OU. If it’s the PAC, it’s probably the Texoma Four. KU will end up somewhere in a power league, just for basketball, academics (AAU membership), and the KC TV market. Maybe WVU has a way into the ACC? I doubt it, though. The big question is does the leftovers from the Big 12 get AAC/MWC/BYU to join them in a non-power Big 12 or do the leftovers join the other non-power leagues? The MWC has been patiently waiting on this day and must be drilling at the idea of getting any of the Texas schools, as well as OSU and KSU. The AAC would love any of them as well, as well as ISU and WVU. What does It mean for us? Best to hope SMU moves up and gives us an AAC spot, which is very possible. If SMU and UH were to join the other Big 12 teams in the Big 12, maybe along with Memphis and Cincy and the two Florida schools, the AAC will have to get filled back up. Temple, Tulsa, Navy, ECU, and Tulane would be back to square one again.2 points

HOOVER, Ala. — Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher can’t wait for the College Football Playoff to expand to 12 teams from its current four, and not only because the Aggies finished No. 5 in last year’s final CFP tabulation leading to the postseason. “I’m all for it,” Fisher said Wednesday, the third of four SEC Media Days. “It’s necessary and needed. … Name me a sport in any collegiate level that, except for the top five conferences, which are about 60 teams, where the other 60 teams have no chance to win a national championship. It really is! This is a conference realignment nuclear bomb. I will say though in your favor, every conference was potentially holding out to get Texas and Oklahoma. Now that they've been taken, there's not that need to hold off expanding for the dream girl. Now, it could be time to settle.2 points

Yes this is all speculative...the key question on all of that is how would Pac12, B1G and ACC respond if this goes down...race or no race? To me a race seems more likely, but I could see the B1G especially sitting back and letting things unfold. Who knows, fun to think about.2 points
-
The only thing the pac12 is racing to is it's grave (I jest). If it is a race, we might see some odd stuff. But I'm just not seeing that right now. And besides, who is the pac racing to get? All of the schools should be available in the big 12 in ten years if they feel like waiting.2 points
-
I get that line of thinking, but I think this is all going to set off a race to 16 teams and as a conference you have to take the best available. Lubbock and Stillwater aren't quite fits, but their gradual move east of the Rockies is imminent now if they want to survive. It also brings their TV schedules into the CST which is helpful for revenue. I've heard the same about the WVU/ACC relationship, but again, when it's a race to 16 teams you take the best available.2 points

I see what Emmitt is saying. The problem is we haven’t sniffed “hot” in football. How many winning seasons have we had in the past 25 years? I agree that performance on the football field is just one part of it and support, facilities, money, commitment are all as important. But to your point MGT, it would be a heckuva lot easier if we had recent success on the field.2 points

Yes sir, they are getting screwed worse than 2021. Schools/Rosters are maxed out. I am hearing some Universities will be asking kids to move on and seek other options to possibly clear up space. It is going to get messy.2 points

Would the Big12 even survive Texas and OU leaving? I could see this leading to a massive split, and probably a new conference all together.2 points

Recruiting. Alabama QB is about to be a millionaire due to NIL. Schools can use the "SEC" pitch for the top recruits and point to their recruits getting big $ through the NIL aTm has this cachet right now by association. This looks to me like an 'if you can't beat 'em, join 'em' situation.2 points

The SEC would certainly disagree. They've generally been the best conference in college football the past 15 years or so, and if they added UT and OU, they wouldn't have a close competitor. I'm a little surprised UT is interested in this; but if true, this will greatly alter the landscape of college sports. I mean, would the Big XII still qualify as "P5"?2 points
-
I'm curious what's in it for UT and OU? Not money This makes it MORE difficult to get in the playoff Expansion to 12 makes it easier for Big 12 to get in What am I missing? Ok edit: Never mind....It's always about MONEY2 points

Um. Poor timing for that. LATech would probably be a lot more enticing right now.... and dare I mention the school in SA? If this happened in 2018, we'd have been in a good position. If there's going to be conference movement, we need Seth to get football going NOW. Coach McCasland has B-ball as an attractive piece. The Olympic sports are very solid (although no baseball hurts). But Football is the butter on the Athletics Toast, and right now, our butter is souring.2 points

If G5 schools are patient there is a chance some very good HS players could be available at the end. The problem will be will they stay around or will they use G5 schools as a stepping stone.2 points

Correct. We should have 16 redshirt freshmen and 31 true freshmen on this year’s roster. 47 of 81 players on scholarship will be classified as freshmen this season, by my count. Sure a big chunk of those players will transfer but how many will get replaced through the portal or JUCO ranks by transfers of the same class? We have to gradually even things out the next four years, otherwise you’d be looking at 30 or so Seniors all leaving at once. Giving players an extra season may have been the right thing to do, but it is complicating things big time down the line. That plus one-time sit-out free transfers all at once has created the perfect storm.2 points
