  6. It seems to me that our offense may be somewhat overrated due to the fact our defense is so bad. Our offense gets the ball a lot and is able to score because the defense can’t stop anyone. So Iin many ways out offensive statistics are misleading.

  7. University of Phoenix has a huge alumni base too. It's all about online enrollment from the homeschooled and military. Liberty gets 'talked' about for reasons that they are not proud of... and not talked about for things they want to get talked about.

  8. According to the Roughrider’s roster, Mason wears #4. His #6 and # 9, his high school number are taken by a defensive lineman and a punter, respectively. 6 is divisible by 4 by 1 with 2 left over, which is half of 4. 9 is divisible by 4, 2 times with 1 left over because Mason is number one with me. See how this works ???

  9. Rice is making progress towards building a $100,000,000 athletic endowment. I know Wren has done many great things since taking over at UNT, but is this something on his radar? I'm sure he is aware of Rice's ambitions, but I'm wondering if we are currently working towards something similar at UNT, or if it is something we need to get in place too. $100 million is probably not a realistic goal, but a multi-million dollar athletic endowment would certainly benefit our athletic department both financially and in perception. Thoughts? https://riceowls.com/documents/2019/4/7//Rice_Athletics_2019_2023_Strategic_Plan_WEB.pdf?id=8790

  13. You're so kind.....but probably the only one....😉 Excellent grouping. I would find room for Nick Zuniga, who started at OG as a true freshman and made all conference the next three years. People don't know how hard it is for someone to become a starter in the OL as a true freshman. After Greene, Hardeman and Booger, I would nominate Rex Johnson in the DL. Ken Washington was good, but IMHO Jordan Case, and Joe Stevenson were better QB's of that era. In the Corkey Nelson-Dennie Parker era, the two best were Scott Davis and Mitch Maher. Steve Ramsey was more versatile than most people realize. His senior year he was the team punter with a 38 yard average. John Love deserves mention as well. He didn't have Darden numbers, but he was the leading receiver in the nation in 1966 and was honorable mention all-American. The year before he got 144 yards receiving against (former SWC power) Arkansas in the 6th game of the season. By the sixth game Arkansas had plenty of film on him and still couldn't stop him.

  15. I think you're right.... The problem with that thinking is our offense isn't CLOSE to good enough to be able to pull that off like those other teams could. Those offenses (Baylor, Tech, etc) were head and shoulders better than ours. In points per game, Baylor was #1 in the nation 3 years in a row. We've never sniffed that. The highest LIttrell has ever been is #19 in 2017. Someone said earlier that his offense is overrated and they are correct. It is massively overrated. Last year in pts per game, we ranked #23 at 34.4 and 2 cancellations probably helped us as we didn't play A&M. Above us on the list, Coastal Carolina, LIberty, SMU, Buffalo...even Texas whose coach was run out of town for many reasons but one being his offense wasn't good enough. They averaged 42.7 per game last season. To put this in perspective....Littrell is seen as the offensive guru, he's not even the best in a 30 mile radius. La Tech had the #1 offense in the nation in 2012 at 51 points per game! That was Sonny Dykes. Then it took Skip Holtz 4 years and he had La Tech's offense back at an elite level at #2 in the nation in scoring at 44 pts per game. #1 that year? Conference mate WKU. We've never been close to that level. I'm not even going to get into the meaningless yards and points Littrell has stacked up after being blown out early as it's been covered. While 34 points per game is nice...especially considering how dreadful our offense was with McCarney....after 6 years our offense is no where near the level necessary to make up for the defense that is played here. If Littrell is going to have that mindset, he needs to be averaging 40-50 pts per game.

  18. Anything remotely comparable to that happening now with Smatresk and Baker seems completely out of the realm of possibility. Not to say they are perfect, but they are damn near the antithesis of Bataille and RV when it comes to running this AD. So much so that I don’t think we can use what happened under them as any real predictor of imminent AD decision making.

  23. Sure, having a bad (horrible) defense will increase positive offensive stats. However, NT was next to last, in offensive time of possession. NT was over an 100 total offensive yds a game over the second place team. That a lot to contribute to a bad defense. NT also substantially led in offensive yards per play, A stat that ignores the time of possession edge. NT' offense was far from overrated based on conference play.

  24. The last glimmer of hope from a McCarney-coached team. This was before the putrid offense finally beat the other 2 phases into submission. Hell the Texas game the week before had me wanting to vomit. We threw 3 completions and 4 picks that game. After DT and crew left, our offense was beyond disastrous. You can see from this video (and the Texas game if you were there) the defense was as good or very close to as good as the 2013 defense until their constantly being on the field due to poor offense wore them down. I have no doubt that this is the reason Skladany retired for good because he was still doing a damn good job but the defense can only do so much.

  30. The goal should be to continue to work toward an undefeated season in a few years, schedule and beat a top 10 team, and get an invite to the CFB expansion dance of 12. There’s now a path where there was none before. Let’s get better and better and get ready for 2024 or 2025.

  31. Maybe we should get them to also rank our Mean Green Village venues as compared to the “bloody” rest of CUSA along with most of the G”freakin’5” (& even some P5’s, too) or maybe—we’d just finish too high for that poll?🤢 ••• IT’S BEEN ONE HELLUVA’ WACKY YEAR FOR A PANDEMIC!🤪 Those who do most G5 college football magazine coverage or polls don’t seem to know how much our team has changed since last Fall because of the portal transfers blitz that has taken place in Denton since the Winter/Spring of 2021. I think we fared quite well truth be told. ••• Even some posters on GMG have yet to factor in all those new “P5-heavily recruited“ additions, either. ••• Some on GMG are even agreeing with a new Yahoo “how many wins in 2021” poll with almost giddy glee (it seems). I’d bet much of that group also said Mason Fine would never start at North Texas, either.

  32. I’ve seen Rice as low as 6th, UTSA as high as 1st, and LaTech as low as 4th. The only constant is UTEP at 7th😩😂. Lack of injuries and some good luck may go a long way in determining the division champion. There is no “team to beat.”

So I could not have been more wrong, they really did make a big jump. The Mean Green pessimist in me that saw us not win more than 3 games 9 out of my first ten years as a fan simply wanted to find a reason for us not to be successful in 2021. We went from 109th to 72nd in one year in power success rate, and went from 109th to 16th in stuff rate in one season, I deserve some crow for my post above. Here is an explanation of the OL stats and they are in order above, along with our rank in each category. Line Yards per Carry: For 2018, we are experimenting with a new definition for college line yardage based on film study and generalization. Instead of the ALY figure FO used for the NFL, this one is tighter: the line gets credit for rushing yardage between 0-3 yards (instead of 0-4) and 50% credit for yards 4-8 (instead of 5-10). Anything over 8 yards is quantified as a highlight opportunity, and credit goes to the runner. As with the pro definition, lost yardage still counts for 125%. (Garbage time is filtered out for all line yardage averages.) Standard Downs Line Yards per Carry: The raw, unadjusted per-carry line yardage for a team on standard downs (first down, second-and-7 or fewer, third-and-4 or fewer, fourth-and-4 or fewer). Passing Downs Line Yards per Carry: The same unadjusted averages for rushing on passing downs. Opportunity Rate: The percentage of carries (when four yards are available) that gain at least four yards, i.e. the percentage of carries in which the line does its job, so to speak. Power Success Rate: This is the same as on the NFL side -- percentage of runs on third or fourth down, two yards or less to go, that achieved a first down or touchdown. Stuff Rate: Same as STUFFED on the NFL side -- percentage of carries by running backs that are stopped at or before the line of scrimmage. Pass-blocking stats Sack Rate: Unadjusted sack rate for all non-garbage time pass attempts. Standard Downs Sack Rate: Unadjusted sack rate for standard downs pass attempts. Passing Downs Sack Rate: Unadjusted sack rate for passing downs pass attempts.

  35. When it comes down to wide receivers, Tampa Bay has about as deep a unit as any team. The Buccaneers feature Pro Bowlers Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Antonio Brown and Rob Gronkowski. Not to mention the team returns speedster Scotty Miller and tight ends Cameron Brate, OJ Howard. A potential surprise player that may see some time is rookie Jaelon Darden, who played collegiate ball at North Texas.
