I'm pretty sure public schools and libraries are key features of many capitalistic societies. It is not necessary to abolish private ownership of industry to have them.

Meh..that's a throw away line (but even the article only points to: "There have been some anecdotal reports of people getting reinfected with the virus after recovering from a first infection and getting sick again after being exposed to the virus a second time.) However, the facts are still the facts with respect to NYC infection rates, hospitalizations and deaths. Agree there are still many unknowns, but just thinking out-loud, what are the likely explanations for the numbers? 1. The data is wrong (intentionally or unintentionally) 2. There has been a mass exodus from the city reducing the population significantly and thus the targets for new infections 3. Along with social distancing when they have to go out, a significant number of people have isolated themselves in their apartments 4. Masks have a major role in reducing the spread 5. The reinfection rate is actually low - at one point in April I think there were credible estimates that up to 25% of the NYC population had already been infected 6. Others? I get that sports are not a necessity, but whether we like it or not, it is a significant part of modern life. Personally, I haven't missed baseball at all. My main point was to ask what metric is good enough for Mr. Cuomo? It is hinted at, but I do think we are largely ignoring the mental health aspects of all of this. We've had external dining for a two to three months now and recently (probably a few weeks) have inside dining in restaurants. I have a close friend that is terrified to sit at an outside table (regardless of how large it is) that has more than 4 people sitting down to eat because the governor said 4 is safe, but 5 is dangerous.

Cuomo is making this up as he goes. If he's waiting for a vaccine and for the entire population of New York to be inoculated, he should say so, because it's not clear what number he's looking for. New York City was arguably the worst situation in the county. Through his and DeBlasio's incompetence, however, they probably created a situation where the virus has run out of new hosts to infect. Here's the chart for New York City hospitalizations. On July 19, 2020 there were 17 new hospitalizations in a city of 8.3 Million. On July 18, 2020 there were 4 deaths, none on the 19th. Positive test results has been trending well under 2%. WTF is he looking for?

Well, 20% difference is a plenty big difference. So is 84% for that matter, which I have also pointed out in the past. Texas has to this point not been hit as hard as many states - it sits at 33rd on a deaths per million basis (NY is #2 behind New Jersey - also I'm counting Washington DC, so there are 51 markers, not 50) and actually is quite a bit below the national average on that score. Whether that will keep up going forward is tough to know. Texas recorded over 200 deaths today and seems likely to have large death numbers for awhile yet. A couple of weeks ago Arizona was near where Texas was in DPM (deaths per million) and now it's #15.

You know...the momentum of the early Tea Party movement got me excited and when Mitch McConnell took over as Senate Majority leader in 2015, I was pumped about more Conservative justices and a new Supreme Court. I figured the days of abortion and catering to the gays was over, but recent decisions have really proven it is more of the same - year after year, we get close, but nothing ever changes. That's why I logged on today - to ask a question I think we've all been avoiding. When is Mitch McConnell the Senate Majority Leader going to hold someone accountable? They have every advantage - brand recognition as the party of Lincoln, a passionate base and even their own GOP news network (like the Long Whorns!!!) We make all these excuses for his dual roles, but other political parties don't do it this way. I want what's best for the GOP, which leads me to my tough question, when is Mitch McConnell the Senate Majority Leader going to fire Mitch McConnell the Senator?

There are 3 different "death rates." Language is important when talking about so many variables, so let's clarify: Mortality Rate (Deaths per X people, doesn't matter who is/not infected. I believe this is typically used when talking about a virus's impact on a community once herd immunity is established. It is critical to understand that this is a dumb rate to use when talking about a novel virus because it is still establishing itself and the number can be very fluid) CFR = Case Fatality Rate (deaths per X number of diagnosed infections) IFR = Infection Fatality Rate (deaths per X number of infections (infections = diagnosed cases + estimated number of undiagnosed cases)). "Death Rate" is so ambiguous. Don't use it. Be as specific as you can. I see the above used interchangeably, when they're not synonymous and possess very different/unique implications.

Texas doesn't almost have the same number of cases as New York - it has about 80% the number. The death rate from NY was much higher though. In Texas it's currently about 1.2% and rising -- in the Empire State it is more like 7.5 percent and falling.

@keith yes and no, too. Yes. NY state did order that step down COVID patients should be sent to nursing homes for recovery. But no, it was not to keep the hospitals cleared, it was because the hospitals were at capacity and they needed emergency spill over. Maybe that is why people were advised to stay away in your area? The hospitals were already peaked? The decision on who or when to hospitalize patients hasn't changed (at least here in Texas). If the patience needs hospitalization, then they need it. There was never an effort to keep people from going to the hospital until it was too late. A lot of deaths from COVID come from after they have 'recovered' and they crash again. It is a very strange sickness in that way.

To imply Universities are not concerned with the safety of students and others is wrong. Perhaps UNT and others are worried about the financial impacts coming. I know there are those who do not like athletics increasing rolls on campuses and would like to see teams eliminated.. I believe we will start seeing smaller programs drop football and be sure when that happens a lot of women's teams that were added to comply with Title 9 will go. Like it or not football supports a lot more than just football players. And for the person tweeting - It is you choice - you do not have to participate if you choose not to, no one is going to force you to attend a game if you do not want to.

Exactly - this is the same bogus usage of the term Socialism as it exists in modern vernacular. When people say they want to have more "socialism", they are NOT saying to eliminate capitalist markets. They want to recognize that some 'market' shouldn't be exclusively private. This video does not recognize that (purposely). If you think our grain market is a free market, you are insane. My tax dollars are propping up wheat against cheaper Brazilian wheat. My tax dollars are propping up cotton against cheaper Indian cotton. My tax dollars are propping up steel from cheapter Chinese steel. Why is it hard to understand that people recognize the upsides of capitalist markets (which we are not pure free markets) and also recognize that social programs are good and should be funded ... without being accused of wanting to be Venezuela 2.0? When people say "socialism" they are not talking about abolishing private industry. Only the right wing fear machine makes it seem like that. In the modern target demographic "socialist" countries - like Norway - they have socialized medicine, but also private insurance. There are private hospital... public libraries and private reading rooms... etc. No one is making private industry illegal. They provide a social safety net. There are free universities, but also private universities. No one is advocate the old Russian Socialism machine. To say that this is NOT the style of "socialism" people advocate is a huge misrepresentation.
