Good game, Mean Green. It was an ugly win, but I'll take it. Really impressed with Mason Fine and your RB Siggers. Good luck rest of the way, and see in Denton a couple of years from now.21 points

No we don't suck. We have a top-shelf defense, but we also have a hapless offense. Our D will keep us in every game, and our O will struggle in every game too. We've beaten an FCS, a G5 and a P5 team, and every one of them had a better QB. If we had Mason Fine, we'd score 40-points against you, while our Defense would still give up just 17 points.15 points

Since I was afraid we'd be blown out and then when we got down 20-0 after the first quarter and I was SURE we'd be blown out, I came away feeling pretty good about yesterday. Sure, the loss hurt, but I also came away feeling positive about the rest of the season. After NT worked our way back in the game and when we got the ball back with about 3 minutes to go, down six - I believed we were gonna have a magical comeback for the ages. Unfortunately, it was not to be. And sure, that sucked -- but given about 2.5 hours earlier we were getting annihilated and I was apologizing to my girl for dragging her to the game, I still felt good about it all. I loved California's campus, very beautiful with all of the trees and older buildings. A lot of cool campus history to read about too. We went to the top of their clock tower which has tremendous views of San Francisco, Alcatraz, and everything across the Bay (probably even better if it hadn't been so foggy over there). We had the pleasure of talking to several alumni/fans of the Bears and I have to say, they are probably the nicest opposing fans I've ever come across. All that interacted with us were first rate, both before and after. Helpful for where we needed to go, thanking us for visiting their school, etc. I loved their stadium, very simple, but very stately. An appropriate war memorial (they also have several other cool war memorials spread through campus). https://news.berkeley.edu/2017/05/26/campus-memorials-honor-veterans/ I wish we came to this part of the country more often to play.14 points

“Win out”, meaning beat Houston in 2 weeks, win every conference game (including the championship) & a bowl game... and be “disappointed“? Did you really think that question all the way through? Because I think I can speak for about 98% of Mean Green fandom when I say: NO! I won’t be disappointed in going 12-2 with a C-USA championship & bowl win.12 points

Some of you know that I gave up my club seats this year. Allow me to explain. As things turned out, my kid finished the TAMS program at UNT and was granted admission to this shitty FCS school in Ithaca, NY that happens to be the top rated engineering program in this stupid league they call, what is it? The Ivy?. Well, they wanted a significant amount of money out of me. Turns out they counted her mother's income (apparently now equal to mine) against me even though her mother has completely cut her off financially. So I get to write some substantial checks for the next three to four years (depending on how many UNT credits transfer). I couldn't let my kid forgo this opportunity, so I made sacrifices. I still follow the program. Just from afar for a while.11 points

If we looked like we had a plan for the first 25 minutes of the game I wouldn't feel so bad. Took the opening kick off, ran 3 stupid plays, and it was all downhill from there till after halftime. Going on the road against an P5 team is tough. But we only can pull our shit together for about 40 percent of all snaps. You have to control what you can. Having a game plan, and not getting 100+ penalty yards are two things you can control.11 points

I feel bad for y’all thinking about how good you could be with a real QB. Amazing defense. Weaver is as-advertised... just wow. Ill be pulling for Cal the rest of the way... y’all have been great guests here on GMG.com.10 points

Thanks for post, CMJ. My wife and I plan to attend Cal's return trip to Denton. See you in a couple of years, meanwhile GO MEAN GREEN!8 points

I don’t know about you guys... but I feel a little better after this game. Yes, for the second week in a row we fell too far behind to win... but we never gave up. We beat them the rest of the game against a team much better than SMU. We will compete in conference and I like our chances against Houston at home. Now possibly losing Rico. That hurts. More for him personally GMG8 points

I have to nominate this post as the Least Rational Post in the history of gmg.com. Go 10-2, hypothetically at North Texas and be disappointed so much that you tell others that they should be too. I’m fairly certain we have never had a 10 win season in football in modern times, if not ever. If you think losing to Cal and SMU makes us look bad, you are going to freak the eff out and have a stroke when we lose to anyone else on the schedule besides UH, which we will do. Fine is special and his skill position players are solid, but the OL is average and the Defense cannot stop decent QBs—these were known issues coming into the year, which is why I had us going 8-4. Unless the wheels just fall apart around here, SL will lead us to a winning season and will be coaching somewhere else after this season. Don’t be disappointed in that, be thankful we have had this run to experience after Portland State massacred us at home by 59 points in a 1-win season. Be thankful to not be getting crushed at halftime by SBCUSA teams at halftime or suffering excruciating losses because of poor head coaching like we did under Dodge. Be thankful to not listen to your coach bad mouth the university and the fans almost any chance he could while only having 3 winning seasons in 9 years but still being honored by having a practice field named after him, while the one coach we have had in 50 years who accomplished great things here, Hayden Fry, is barely honored. That’s how you look at all of this.6 points

It was too bad the team couldn’t pull off the upset yesterday, but at least they showed some fight. With UTSA coming in town next Saturday, Littrell needs to make sure the team comes out firing on all cylinders. Losing to SMU was bad, especially the way we lost. However, losing to UTSA at home would be way worse. I know UTSA looks better than they did last year. However, there is no reason UNT shouldn’t win this game, especially since it’s at Apogee. The run for the conference championship starts now.5 points

Thanks for the kind words. As a cal fan, we get this a lot. We get first time visitors and before coming, they aren’t quite sure what to expect. And then they realize that Californians are just like everyone else. We aren’t some crazy liberals my favorite trip I’ve ever taken was actually to go watch cal play Tennessee. Wow those guys are hospitable. And I’m sure if I come out to the UNT game, I’ll get the same type of treatment. Its funny. While our politicians are trying to tear us apart, it’s football that can help bring us back together.5 points

In 2017, we had back-to-back loses to SMU in Dallas and Iowa on the road. That was also the year we won the Western Conference, played in the CUSA championship game and went to the New Orleans Bowl. I'll wait until the season is completely before writing the obituary. GMG5 points

Few thought NT would beat Cal at Cal. I just don't get all this giving up on a season because of the first three games. SMU was a disappointing loss but they were favored. CA despite what some seem to think on here is a very good team. I am encouraged by what I saw today, despite another lousy first quarter. I just wonder based on some comments, which CUSA teams that some fans seem to think are better than Cal. I can't think of any.5 points
-
My thoughts from Berkeley today....The first half was bad. The Cal QB played bad. Our defense was not so bad that second half. I thought the Cal fans were very nice. They asked a lot of questions about Mason. I only had one kid come up to me and tell me that North Texas sucks. I responded back to him, if we suck so bad, why did y’all only beat us by 6 points? Also, the traffic here is horrendous. I miss Whataburger. See you guys at Apogee next week.5 points

True. You’ll have to ignore that poster. He deals in hyperbole, he’s clairvoyant, is ready to fire our coach that took over a dumpster fire of a program, etc... Good luck to you all the remainder of the year and thanks for being a classy group of fans.5 points

I suspect they will be in the Top 25 if they win next week. They may get there this week just by virtue of almost getting in last week and Washington looking good again.5 points
-
I agree with all but the SMU in the Top 25 part. They are not as good as they looked against us. Somehow, don’t know why, they play their season’s best game (and we look like small children who just started playing pee wee football for the first time) every time we come to Dallas...every damn time.5 points
-
At least expectations have changed so much we're pissed off we just lost by 6 on the road against a PAC 12 team. There were some positive signs on defense but nothing I saw today makes me believe we are contenders in CUSA. Hope I'm wrong.5 points

Last yr’s team was more well rounded and experienced than this team. I haven’t expected the same things I did last yr. Blowing it with LT, UAB and ODU was super depressing. SMU is much improved this yr. We played awful then and the first half of this one, but winning out from here (as unlikely as that is) would put this up as the greatest year in our history. 2 loss conference champ and bowl winner sounds great to me.5 points

My not of takes since I don't think everyone should be fired or that the season is lost. Team is playing pretty immaturely with the self inflicted wounds. Includes veterans like Fine the int yesterday was a rookie mistake or Darden fielding that punt inside his 7 with no blockers. That deep WR corps is not that deep especially after what sure looked like a serious injury to Bussey yesterday. Both backups were dropping passes The secondary and linebackers are improving rapidly. Still making mistakes but like the bwckups at wideouts they are inexperienced mistakes. Special teams hurt us a lot yesterday but otherwise has been solid. Dline was impressive yesterday #2 looks like best player on the team. Most concerned about injuries than the results so far.4 points

Congratulations to your daughter! I truly believe there are seasons (no pun intended) to our lives that necessitate pulling back on our support financially from our beloved mean green. I’m in a similar situation with my family and, it’s funny, we’re in a very similar situation with my son who went up to Ohio to study at a small private school and to play D3 tennis. We also got virtually zero financial assistance but I expected that. The only reason we encouraged him to go was the fact that with academic scholarships and tons of AP credits he essentially made his cost pretty (relatively??) close to public school prices. I digress... My point is that our family, four kids and all, have been mean green fans for over 20 years and my wife and I will continue to be so for at least the next 20 years. We had to also drop season tickets for the family but still try to make games when we can. We will come back to season tickets when things settle down. I refuse to let anyone label us as bad fans. Go mean green.4 points

Lost by 6 I can’t help but think about the end of the 1st half. Stopped them on 3rd down with over 1:00 to play and 3 timeouts and we didn’t call one.4 points

Dog Gone Harry, I turned off live stream at the beginning of the third quarter thinking we were going to be butchered. We did one heck of a job coming back. I will be in Denton next week, Thanks for the update4 points

My last thoughts about this game. I thought when Brett Vito came out with his get your rear on the record segment that this would be one of the games they lost. This was a winnable game though. I think for me what makes it sting more is that I did not expect the SMU loss. I thought for sure we would head to the Houston game at 3-1. Had we won last week, this would be easier to take. The fact that we were decimated last week meant we really had to have this one. Then to see it slip away because of a slow start, bad decisions, dropped balls, undisciplined penalties, and failures to make tackles makes it hurt. Hopefully Reeder will figure out a way to get the offense going sooner. I will still love my Mean Green, but we have to get out to faster starts. Maybe instead of deferring when we win the toss, maybe we should take the ball and put pressure on opposing defenses first. Just my opinion.4 points

I love our fanbase. North Texas scores a lot...”the other team’s defense is clearly horrible” North Texas scores a little...”Our offense is clearly not as good as advertised because the other team’s defense is overrated”4 points

With the way that first quarter went, I’m in total shock that this team had the ball with two minutes to go and a chance to win the game. If this passing game finds a spark next week I think we can be somewhat optimistic for the Houston game.4 points

Nope. And saying something over and over and over doesn’t make it true. Cal beat a very good Washington team last week and we had our chances to beat Cal.3 points

I didn’t read through this whole thread, but I’m guessing it went mostly like this: 1st half: We suck! Todd Dodge! Fire Reffett! Fire Littrell!(?), Oh no, Bussey injured, our season is over!... 2nd half: Defense looking stellar! Mason settling down...we’re gonna win this game! Re-hire Reffett! Re-hire Littrell! If we can play like we did in the second half, we’ll win out! Am I close? BTW... I REALLY hope Bussey didn’t snap a knee ligament. The way he went down & the way he got up (frustrated, because he probably felt it pop), makes me think we’re going to be getting a redshirt this year for Rico, unfortunately.3 points

I personally think the d finally found its self today and stuffed a solid running game! Offense started slow but then began to play well against a very good defense. I’m excited to watch this team start to click I think we handle utsa and the Houston game at home should be a good one! I think we could possibly win out in conference that and a bowl win would make this year a huge success!3 points
-
It’s definitely not a disappointment if we win out or even with a loss to Houston. The team needs to focus on winning conference (which hasn’t happened here in 15 years) and a bowl game. If they do that, it will be a successful year. Until UNT is doing that consistently, then doing that would not be disappointing.3 points

dan marino won a conference championship though..... more like the tony romo of UNT3 points

No. If we win the CUSA Championship and win a bowl game, I’ll be thrilled. SMU will be a Top 25 team before the end of the year. We’ve got a long way to go to run the table and win in the postseason, though.3 points

I hope mason wins the conference or a bowl game. I love the kid. I would hate to think of him as the dan marino of North Texas.3 points
