I'm graduating in December, and in my third year at UNT, I can now safely say that was the most fun and - I'm pretty sure - the most packed student section I've been a part of since coming here. I don't know if we can get a tally of student numbers but I had to push and shove my way through a sea of kids to get to the front row on the 50. Never had to do that before at a game. GMG.17 points

No. I think that our porous defense will impact this game far greater.12 points

Some thoughts: 1) For the sake of this board, everyone please take a step back from the ledge. We beat a team by 20. The sky is not falling. 2) The first game of the year is very rarely an indicator of season performance 3) FCS games are also rarely indicators of season performance. Most of the stuff used in FCS games isn’t used again. It’s used to misdirect other teams scouting. 4) we had a lot of turnover on defense. There were always going to be growing pains there. The question will be how quickly do they develop this season. 5) Every win is hard fought. Celebrate it.11 points

First thing Buchele is poised. Legit P5 QB. Threw only two bad balls all day. Pick came off a tip. AState played a soft zone and he chewed it up. Officials and I disagree on what holding is. Had decent pressure on him at times but he would step away from it rather than run away when he could. He fumbled on a sack in the end zone and Ponies were fortunate to only give up 2 instead of 7. SMU didn’t mount much of an effective pass rush until late. New OL coach at AState rotated fewer players than guy he replaced and it started showing late. AState’s QB from Rowlett TX posted very similar numbers to Buchele in his first ever start. Buchele had completed about 8 passes at UT for every pass Bonner had attempted at AState coming in. Red Wolves have no real depth at QB and avoided running him. AState offense is from the Fedora tree so unusual to see so few carries by a QB. My sense of the run of play is the Ponies are vulnerable to a QB who will tuck and run some. One turnover he lost the handle after the center snapped the ball to the surprise of the other 10 players. SMU RB maintains good leg churn for bit extra after contact. SMU’s deep snapping on placekicks and punts was poor. If their punter was a couple inches shorter they give up a TD or safety on a sailed snap Had a goal line stand SMU got nothing on. Stuffed running WR drop and one poorly thrown ball The d back who was a RB at UCLA saved a touchdown after getting beat. Threw it in another gear hauled ass and made diving deflection of a pass. One of the most athletic plays I’ve ever seen in person I thought they looked better than when we saw them Morris’ last year If you can get some pressure and don’t always go soft zone when bringing heat and QB adds some run threat you should be fine10 points

Texas Tech beat an FCS by 35, Alan Bowman (who missed half of last season and derailed Tech's season) played the entire way. This board was abuzz about how the Lane Train had derailed and Ohio State crushed FAU. Justin Fields went longer than Mason Fine. Appy State in the SunBelt crushed an inferior opponent 42-7. The backup came in for one series, just like Bean. UTSA crushed Incarnate Word 35-7. Their QB went the whole way. Just a few games i looked at. Point being, it is entirely normal for the starter to go this long. Giving a backup legitimately valuable minutes where they run the offense and throw the ball is a considerable anomaly.8 points

Every year there are people who argue back and forth about whether or not we should play an FCS opponent. Here is our historical attendance vs FCS opponents (home openers denoted by an * because home opener always brings in a few more people): 2019 vs ACU: 23,057* 2018 vs Incarnate Word: 18,538 2017 vs Lamar: 19,592* 2016 vs Bethune Cookman: 15,609 2015 vs Portland State: 19,801 (homecoming) 2014 vs Nicholls State: 21,323 2013 vs Idaho: 21,975* 2012 vs Texas Southern: 22,295*7 points

Students catch a lot of flack on this board, often rightfully so, but they showed up and showed out last night. From across the stadium I saw a home field advantage for our guys.7 points

He got burned several times too. I didn’t feel great about his performance. Inconsistent.7 points

Hah... look, personally, I really do try to avoid partaking in "MFing eagles" and stuff. At this point, it's just kinda corny and nothing more. But we go hard in the paint when it comes to relentlessly heckling the opposition. Come into our house, we're gonna do whatever it takes to get in your head. Last year we made an Incarnate Word lineman rage when we roasted him for getting pancaked.7 points

Names of guys on NFL practice squads are coming out.. Jeff is our only one so far. Don't feel good about Jalen to the Cowboys, since they put WR Cedric Wilson on their PS. Anyway...here's a NFL practice squad tracker: https://nfltraderumors.co/nfl-practice-squad/6 points

I had to work tonight, but I get on here late night, and see people complaining about the defense. We were up 41-10. I know mason stayed in the game too long, but do you really think we were playing out number 1 d the entire time?? i thought the d looked fast while we built our lead. I also think Tyreke Davis is going to be a stud. We were much less aggressive later in the game as well probably because we had a decent lead. I am “baffled” that mason played as late into the game as he did, but we have to be be realistic about the big picture. As much as I love SL, and always will, he’s going to get Mason as many stats as he can because, sadly, this is probably his last season here. So don’t expect him to worry about development. He’s gonna let Mason get his stats so he can hopefully get some recognition. (Which I want for him as well) Realistically, as much as we want SL to be our Gary Patterson, it probably isn’t gonna happen. It’s just not. However, he has set us up on an entire new trajectory that NONE of us truly thought possible. If he decides to be our Patterson, Bowden, Coach K..... then hell effin yes!, thank God that finally happened for us, but if not, let’s just live in this moment and enjoy the ride. I feel like Neil and Wren have developed a culture and environment here that are soooo enticing that we might finally be able to keep this train rolling even after Littrell. That being said, Seth, Wren, and Neil.. please stay here and make this university your legacy. Y’all have done more for this university and the fan base than so, so many people that have come before you. Don’t be one in a line of many, be the one that people talk about for generations. I’ll step off my soap box now.6 points

Darn, Harry did you watch the game? Harvey was definitely the weak point on a weak defense. He is either going to have to improve or NT find another corner.6 points

I’ve said it before, these transfer portal issue is crazy. What, seventeen transfers? We’ve won in Dallas only once ever. Can’t wait for next Saturday. Let’s organize big and travel well - what a great showdown it will be. GMG5 points

They targeted Harvey’s players more than others because it seemed like it was working. I dunno. I wouldn’t call the play stellar.5 points

I'm 110% not worried about Fine and the offense ripping them a new one. I do, however, question what they'll be doing to our defense... If our first half D shows up all game, all good. Second half D is going to give me liver damage.4 points

I didn’t read this whole thread, but I didn’t see anyone mention Tyreke going out with a bum quad. The instant that happened, the wheels fell off on defense. Wood missed a tackle Tyreke likely would have made on that 60-something yard TD run that made the score 41-17 early in the 3rd. After that, coverages got a lot softer & we blitzed a lot less, which is the source of QB pressures in this 3-3 stack defense. ACU took advantage of all of those things. Maybe we have a Fine equivalent at LB? Depth there is most definitely concerning. We’re going to need Tyreke back pronto.4 points
-
The reason Fine was left in the game was not to pad stats, but to win the game. That defense was plain awful and the way ACU was moving the ball, I think the coaches were afraid of what the score may have been with another QB. An unimpressive win or a loss were certainly possibilities.4 points
-
Look, the defense is a legit question. Of course it is. We all know it. But don't you also concede that just saying "WE GAVE UP 31 to ACU!" is a bit misleading considering this was a three score game in the first quarter?4 points
-
I guess i don't get what this big "experience/preparation" factor is that backup QBs get by coming into garbage time and handing the ball off.... what team anywhere puts a backup QB in and runs the normal offense/throws the ball much at ALL? Don't fear injuries. You can't. I don't love running Fine either, but I don't mind him being in the game.4 points
