  1. My favorite thing about this thread is that we are arguing about whether Dallas or Fort Worth is a better bowl destination for us, under a young first year head coach, after 1-11 & Portland State. #GMG.

  2. It's that attitude of the typical North Texas fan why we average under 20k per home game. I would be going even if we were playing Denton High.

  3. Sweet! This is the exact game I wanted. A bowl game in the historic Cotton Bowl stadium A game in Dallas A beatable opponent Direct DART rail access for fans...and Denton people (students) can get there by simply connecting to the Denton train A service academy on the other side of the stadium A bowl that specifically supports police and fire Pretty excited

  6. Proof that some of us would bitch if hung with a new rope. We are a 2 win pre season projection who some how won 5 games. Are we very good? No. At 5&7 are we lucky to be in any bowl? Yes.Yet some of us bitch because of the opponent, or the time, or the location. Give me a break. I froze my butt of at West Point 10/22, will see us play Army again 12/27, and again next season. If deserves has any thing to do with football, our fickle fans deserve the horseshit program we have had the last decade.

  10. Awe shucks come on now......don't want to sound preachy', but we get a bowl and now some fans are getting picky? For what its worth, schools that are moving up the totem pole in the NCAA G-5 toward eventual P-5 don't have such picky fans. Just sayin'... The group I was with at the last HOD Bowl game had a total blast with all the pre-game hoopla! The HOD officials made it a 1'st class bowl for both UNLV and UNT football teams along with the approx. 36,000 Mean Green fans who attended plus.......much of the proceeds of this game go to charities. HOD & UNT officials were having "UNT" put in huge letters on some of their most visible "Big D" downtown buildings which were seen by many travelers on Stemmons Freeway. The HOD Bowl was made to be an event and this game will be treated as such. For me I'm making this game the unoffical 1'st game of the 2017 season because it will feature many of our future stars. I can't wait to see their further development at this bowl game. ➡️ We should all be there to greet them. And as a few of you have pointed out because of this bowl invite, our recruiting class with this young, aggressive UNT coaching staff will pull in more quality recruits. I'm sure many of those potential recruits will be at this bowl game. GO MEAN GREEN.........BEAT ARMY!

  16. +1 for this affectionate display of unity among a normally divided and bickering fanbase. And to think, there are people who don't want us to go bowling when we are already seeing the positive effects of this team's success.

  18. Good God man. If you were told, in the middle of last year while Portland State was kicking our teeth in, that next year we'd be in a bowl game again, but it's on a Tuesday against a team we've already played, would you have turned that down???

  20. How about if I get every officer I know to go online and order their four free tickets (FFRick you can do this too...they love you guys as well) regardless of whether they plan to attend. Then give the 500 or so tickets to students

  21. Let me start off by saying that after this season... My ties to north Texas football are cut. I will obviously hang around and continue to support the other boys on this team that our family has a relationship with through my brother but outside of that... I will no longer have a bias on these topics. I came into this forum with a long and sarcastic post so it's only fitting that I should exit with one. +1/-1... I don't really care anymore SO... while we are all trying to pass the time with waiting for our bowl announcement... Here are some thoughts and reading material. First- On the "oh so popular" topic of the position of quarterback: Mason Fine may be an incredible quarterback for UNT. Is he an answer to every problem this program has had? Hell no. THERE ARE 10 other guys on the field. I have observed nothing but poise, humble leadership and the opportunity for him to have an amazing future here at this university and I challenge anyone to name something that has made you think otherwise about that kid. You won't be able to. On the recent recruiting digs: When you have a coaching change and you go 1-11... What kind of expectations do you have in the immediate future for recruiting? 5-7, this bowl game and our good grades just saved UNTs ass for this years recruiting. So quit the bitching about us going to a bowl because you think it's "not earned". The same rules that say a team with six wins is qualified... Is the exact same rules that say that we are at 5-7 with a bad ass APR. It is a shameful and ridiculous argument that is a direct slap in the face of these student athletes. If you need proof that there is something in the air to be excited about for UNT footballs future: WATCH BEYOND THE GREEN. Watch how the coaches interact with the players and the players interact with each other and the coaches. If you observe how these relationships were driven back in 2013, you will noticed that the hype and motivation came from that group of seniors. When they left... So did the hype and motivation. Now observe last years sneak peek into the locker room compared to this year's.... My experience in being a college athlete, having a family full of college and professional athletes, having been surrounded by an unbelievable group of coaches in my life and being a coach myself has taught me that coaches that hold themselves and their staff accountable for their mistakes as much as they do their players is a trait that earns respect from the entire program. THAT kind of Respect motivates work ethic... that affects the teams improvement... that inspires ambition... that breeds pride, loyalty and teamwork... that further motivates the level of work ethic, demands respect and raises bars. Coaches that are humble enough to accept responsibility (even in sometimes situations when it's not there's to claim but for the good of the team) teach their athletes the same behaviors. One of the most positive things that I have witnessed from this particular group of coaches and makes me regret my player not wearing a red shirt this year is the fact that they seem to understand how to communicate with their athletes. They are students and human. They make mistakes. Sometimes big. Sometimes small. Coaches do it too. But it's not really about the mistakes as much as how they behave after they make them... This is one of those creeds that's driven into your mind as a young youth athlete and one of the most popular in getting neglected as the level of competition rises. It's something that without a shadow of a doubt Dan McCarneys staff completely forgot. Did you see any Carlos Harris outbursts this year? Nope. Have you seen any mud slinging from player to player or coach to player/ vice/versa? NOPE. This coaching staff has exhibited behaviors that are in line with keeping everyone moving forward and getting better at every turn. For example- suspending athletes because they are breaking team rules then not throwing them on the chopping block to the media, taking responsibility for a game that falls on the unmotivated shoulders of the ENTIRE TEAM last week, actually coaching instead of yelling at each other and the players AND giving these STUDENT ATHLETES the room and confidence to be able to translate mistakes and failures into learning experiences that gets them better instead of throwing them out. There are these articles circulating from bleacher report about cheating and the two things that it requires in order to build a successful program... Make no mistake about it. The reason why this staff will be successful is because of its core values. They understand that teaching doesn't end in high school and that it's more important to teach these kids how to be men rather than abandoning principles for the sake a football game. And these players love them and respect them for it. And in the future, parents of high school seniors will be more inclined to push their kids into the arms of a staff that will take care of them, teach them and respect them. When you have an atmosphere like that... Winning happens a hell of a lot more. When I first came onto this forum, four years ago... I started off with a very similar post. ? I have met some amazing and great alumni from gomeangreen.com who have been incredibly welcoming to me and my husband, my family and became fellow cheerleaders for our player. There are even a few of you on here that I now consider friends. I want to thank those friends for always inviting us to tailgates, after parties, tolerating my late-night drunk posts/ the long winded posts/ chat swearing and then..... defending them. Heehee. This fun little website has made me throw my phone at times but also created a lot irreplaceable memories that has made our football seasons so much more fun and I will be forever grateful for that. It's always amazing that people on here twist the past with the future even though it's not logical to do so in some situations. UNT football's past IS NOT UNT football's future. You all have a lot to be hopeful and excited about and I look forward to dropping by to celebrate this programs successes and say "I told you so" again. And who knows... maybe I'll be back on here in a few years to cheer on my own son in a MEAN Green jersey. I would be proud to. ?GMG, Stephanie (SSP) ?

  23. I have four tickets (that I got for free) that are in the middle of the field. Every first responder in DFW has the same opportunity. If that doesn't lead to an attendance bump then something is wrong.

  25. OKKKKK! Great publicity in the metroplex... Dallas lit green the night before the game....We are now the Ivy school of the metroplex...Playing a historic opponent with Army and the cadets....We get to practice for 3 more weeks.... On national TV.....oh WAIT the stadium seats hurt my butt! Had a blast in 2013 can't wait for a repeat! 45,000 at the game! Proud of the kids! GMG

  26. I think we should tone down the "beatable opponent". If we can't force a bunch of turnovers again - not a given at all - then this could be a game we easily lose. I hope we win, we can win, but this is far from a forgone conclusion just because we won the first game.

  29. Today marks an important turning point in the talking points of North Texas. For years, decades even, one could reasonably and objectively opine on how we received the short-end of the FBS stick whether by our lack of leadership or outside influence. Despite 10-1 and 9-2 seasons, a worse off LaTech would get an Indy Bowl invite because of dumb tie-ins. We lost Fry to that situation. SMU kept us out of of SWC. We foolishly dropped to I-AA. While making modest strides in some* facilities, the RV-era will be forever marked by incompetence and an inability to capitalize on success when it occurred. When was the last time an NCAA appeal went our way? The baggage from all of that carries. Now, however, we are faced with a situation we are not used to. By both our inherent merits and positive momentum, trajectory, what-have-you, a bowl committee is going our way. They are placing their faith in us as a school, program, and fan base to show up and show out despite regular season results and an unusual match-up. It is up to us to reward that faith.

  30. Abso-frickin-lutely. It's by God North Texas in a BOWL GAME. I'm so in no matter what it's insane.... can't imagine anyone who's cheered for this thing for any period of time NOT feeling that way, but hey... to each their own.

  35. Maybe a bit off topic but I've wished North Texas would ask a band like The Eli Young Band or Bowling for Soup (someone with Denton ties) to come out and play at Apogee on a game day. It would be cool for a bowl too I guess. I know several people that aren't North Texas fans who would go to a game if there was a cool band playing around the event. The Cowboys do it outside and it's really cool. The Gameday atmosphere would be better, more party like, which would be better for recruit's and fans perception. Mostly it would be more fun.

  37. Good point. Of those 20-30k "extra fans" we're trying to get in, who are not a part of the core 10k, how many actually even know we played them this year already? They see Army and think "oh cool, North Texas is playing Army!"

  38. I don't think the casual UNT fan/alum is keeping track of our 2021 schedule, or even 2017 for that matter. If someone that doesn't follow the team very closely sees we're in a bowl, I doubt they're to going to look up our future OOC opponents to ensure we're not playing them again.

  40. Exactly. I can't believe people are disappointed in any variable involving our 2nd bowl game in 12 years. We have to show up and be loud. We are lucky to be there, "sticking it" to HOD by not showing up doesn't absolutely zero for us. GMG!

  47. I'm not gonna come here and talk trash, but here's my objective opinion on what happened: for some reason, UNT kept making ill-advised trips into the paint where at least 2 or 3 Mavs were waiting upon your shooters each and every time. And the result was not pretty usually for the Eagles...a turnover, UTA steal or awkward layup attempt that was not exactly high percentage. Our defense will allow teams to shoot a lot of 3s, and tip of the cap if you can make them. But the Mavs will not allow much inside. Not that we're a huge team size-wise, but quick enough to get defenders into the right spots and take away the paint. UTA played pretty well except for a 5-minute lull at the end of the first half where UNT cut down the lead. We're not a great shooting team from outside, but there was little defense of the perimeter for the most part. UTA turns the ball over a lot because of the crazy-fast pace we like to play at when the opportunities arise to do so, but there were a lot of UNT traveling calls and unforced errors which gave the Mavs extra possessions. The officials were calling a fairly tight game but UNT had 14 FT attempts vs. 8 for UTA in the first half. I see a lot of individually talented players for UNT, but just not much flow to the offense it didn't seem for some reason. Mean Green were good on the boards all day long, getting lots of 2nd-3rd-4th chances on the offensive end. That being said, parking was easy and the Super Pit has a big video board.
