Midshipmen at the Naval Academy can choose the Marine option while they are at the Academy if they want to be in the fight. When the Navy and Air Force coach talks to recruits parents they can Push the advantage of being on a ship or aircraft as opposed to leading a platoon slugging it out in a ground fight in the global war on terror. As for your deployments with the Navy, I never said the Navy did not contribute, but you were the extreme minority for your branch.5 points

Rick, as a career Army officer and some who has completed five tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Army has been the overwhelming contributor in the recent wars around the world. The Navy and Air Force contribution is minuscule in comparison and their jobs keep them relatively safe. When Army tries to recruit a player they have been at a significant disadvantage over the years.5 points

Even if we're doing good, people are always going to point to players doing well elsewhere who we should've recruited. All that matters is that we're getting good players ourselves, and I don't care who we should've gotten.5 points

My hope is that North Texas doesn't have to wait for all CUSA conference-mates to have down years for us to win its championship. My dream is when we win it we'll be a Top 25 program & others will be chasing us to do the same. Ex conference-mate Boise State would have been a good model to emulate for most of the last quarter century. GMG!3 points

Since it's the bye week and a little slow on news, I wanted to remind people of adding this impact player next year. Defense looks insanely better this year compared to last, so just imagine adding Bryce, who had 10 P5 offers. He will have basically had 2 redshirt years to grow and develop. Not to mention potentially having him step in as a starter for 4 years! Excited to watch this team the rest of the year! GMG!3 points

Carl Lockhart played running back, wide receiver, punter, punt returner, safety and corner back for North Texas..when he was drafted by the NY Giants he got his nickname Spider......My roommate and I had Coach McCain for " Coaching Football" in 1970. He knew we were big NY Giant fans...so he would tell us stories about Carl...the all time best was "Carl thought he was so good that he could cover Jesus Christ on a down and out"......the other story was . its 1964 or '65.....Tulsa comes to town with Jerry Rhome the No 1 qb in the country.. Broke 10 passing records...but Howard Twilly was the top WR in the country and had set a few receiving records....some sports writer from Tulsa was writing about the game and how no one could stop Twilly....think Coach said something like Twilly was talking some "smack" about no one stopping him.....then McCain with that Texas accent said " cum the end of the game Carl caught 3 passes and Twilly had two". Not sure if we beat Tulsa or what....that's all Fred said....I still laugh today about that class....he told more stories....another was... he was the offensive coord at the time..." I believe in 3 things in football, pass, pass and pass"... now at the time North Texas was ranked No 1 in the nation in passing. Ramsey threw for 69 or 71 touchdowns,Shanklin and Moore broke records on the other end...Hardman was the No 1 draft choice of the 49'ers,Dunlop the year after...we had 3 1st round draft choices from 68-'71..Mean Joe was 68'.... I had Rod Rust as our teacher but he showed up the 1st day of classes and the last day....but love Fred Also someone mentioned Joe Milton... I was his roommate at Kerr in 1970....really can't say anything....anyone who went to NT in the early 70's knows why....he was from Wolfe City....that I'll always remember..and he was a funny dude....I have over 100 Joe Milton stores but those are private....going to the army game Saturday....lets hope the Black Nights heads are swelled after beating up on a D-1AA school.. Another point not in Army's favor for top athletes is their propensity to enforce the service agreement whereas canoe U and zoomie U have allowed their former players some accommodation for the ones with potential pro careers.2 points

Mean Green Hoops....talked to my buddy this morning at breakfast...go over to where the lines start to go up to the stadium{ in front of Post Office} You will see lines of people waiting to get on the buses...go over to one of the workers that has on an orange vest with a radio....you will see a whole bunch of them...tell him you need a bus for a wheelchair....they then radio a special bus..in about 5 minutes one will arrive... you can walk over from where your tailgating and say ' can I have a bus in 10 minutes,etc....Talk to the bus driver about where to go when the game is over...I'm sure its gets crowded and there is a meeting point.... The Good News....... fall foliage here is almost at 85% peak....not sure if you guys understand that fully...by next Saturday it could be up to 90-95%.....we are a little late because usually by Columbus Day we are peaking here in Orange County....but we have had no rain which I guess causes a delay.....you people going to the game will get to see bright orange, light red, bright yellow, dark red, caramel, brown and green...bring your camera's....the ones coming up the river on the ferry will get a spectacular view....the nice thing about my view is that I'm sitting right in front of a bay window typing this here...think I got the colors right....hope to see a few of you next week... I do,...because It points directly at how an absolute cluster intercourse our recruiting has been, including our camps and how they were run. And even worse, it points to the terrible damage to our reputation we have on high school campuses that SL has to mend. I suppose if we start winning it'll all be water under the bridge. Till then it'll be out there. Rick2 points

Remember that badass linebacker from Lake Dallas, Josiah Tauaefa who wanted to play for us but McCarney didn't want him? "Lake Dallas-ex Tauaefa Named UTSA Starter At Middle Linebacker" http://drchighschoolblog.dentonrc.com/2016/05/lake-dallas-ex-tauaefa-named-utsa-starter-at-mlb.html/?_ga=1.15459446.158312934.1463403893 Yeah,...we couldn't have used any of that depth at middle linebacker right about now, right? And just to remind, below is a screenshot of his brother Isaac's tweet last year mocking North Texas for its lack of interest in local talent. http://m.imgur.com/6Nr0S3X And recently we learned of two young local softball talents who helped La Tech blow us away. Again,...this is non of Litrell's fault but it shows the uphill climb against our reputation he has in front of him. And our AD needs to let it be known...Coaches who continue to get their asses handed to them in recruiting will be shown the door. This hores$&@t of letting good local talent go elsewhere has to end or we'll never dig out of the hole we're in. Rick1 point

(My best Joe Pesci voice) OK OK OK You know those guys that go to a game wearing a shirt or jersey of a team that's NOT playing that night ? Well, I've decided to do something about it. My store, Denton Bicycle Center, is doing a promotion this basketball season called, "Take the shirt off your back." Here's how it works. One of the promotions people finds a guy wearing a UT shirt while we're playing Rice or somebody. Another promotions person goes up into the stands and makes contact with this UT person. The guy on the floor says, It's time for "Take the Shirt off your back" presented by Denton Bicycle Center." "Hey Mary. Where are you ?" Mary says, "I'm up here with Bob. Hey Bob, is that a University of Texas shirt you're wearing ?" Bob says, "Yes." Mary to the crowd, "Hey everybody. Has anyone here ever heard of the University of Texas ?" The crowd says, "NOOOOO." Mary to crowd, "Would you like Bob to wear a North Texas Mean Green shirt ?" Crowd, "YESSSSSS." (Hopefully Bob puts on the free NT shirt and doesn't come looking for me) Mary to Bob, "Thanks Bob for taking the shirt off your back brought to you by your friends at Denton Bicycle Center." You got it ? I need your help with "NO" and with "YES". GO MEAN GREEN1 point

The 50 most important college players in Texas in 2016 — No. 44: North Texas’ Bryce English This story is from April 29, so it may have been posted already (would be surprised if it hadn't) but nothing turned up in my search query. I'm on football overload. Got up and watched the NT vs Marshall replay on CUSA.TV. (I was on a camping trip last weekend and didn't make it to the game.). I then watched most of Army vs Lafayette on CBSSPORTS. Then I kept going back and forth between MTSU/WKU and LATech/UMass, both on ESPN3. Now I'm watching Southern Miss vs LSU on SEC Network. Enjoyed some Audacity Bulletproof along the way.1 point

According to the 2005 NT football guide, Corkey Boland only started one year, 1964. His passing stats were 116 (att)/49 (comp)/3 (TD) 608 yards. It appears that 29 of his passes went to Carl (Spider) Lockhart, who is one of North Texas' most all time versatile players. He was the leading receiver in 64, the team punter (unusual for a player of color) in 63/64 with a 39 yrd average, the leading punt returner, and he led the defense in int's (5). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_"Spider"_Lockhart Back to Corkey Boland. Mary, is Mr. Boland still alive? And if so, where does he live? Does he attend North Texas football games?1 point

It's just fantasy, but a boy can dream, right? Rice Tech TCU Baylor UNT Houston Tulane Tulsa Southern Miss LaTech UTEP Memphis That gives a nice regional mix of seven publics and five privates, most of the schools with good academics (I think of the list, only UTEP would be suspect). Yes, I know, there are about two hundred responses coming to tell me how unrealistic this is and how it would never happen because X school hates Y school and ESPN can't pleasure itself enough with Z school. Whatevs. I would love this conference, and it's nothing more than bye week dreaming. Also, Leave SMU out in the cold, because screw those guys.1 point

This is a little bit of a conspiracy theory (not really since it was in the report that was published not long ago) but I believe that Wren Baker is attempting to position us to be more attractive when the Big 12 collapses and the schools in this region scramble to make a solid conference inits place. With a new indoor facility and potential expansion of our training facilities as well as the academic center, we could be a more attractive school than most here realize. But none of that matters if you do not win. Just imagine playing TCU, Houston, Baylor, and Tech every season. We could be looking at that here in the next 4-5 years.1 point

No respect at all for the NT program. Interesting, that the biggest question mark is not on the court but on the sideline. Obviously, Benford is lucky to get this final chance at NT. Benford has in my view done an amazing job recruiting. Just filling up the roster with his first four year performance had to be a challenge. Benford has done more than that, I believe he has the talent to compete for the title if anyone develops to help Combs in the front court. That leaves the question is the talent good enough to overcome a bad coach or can Benford improve to the adequate or above level. Neither of these scenarios seems likely, but there is at least a sliver of hope.1 point

My not so quick thoughts on Rice game: Really wish I had gone to Houston, a lot less tension than trying to watch on Owl vision Sound when available was dominated by NT fans and travel band, great job Fine continues to grow, have now completely forgotten he is too short to play big time football Offensive line still very much a work in progress Wide receivers took a needed step up Wilson, my grandson's jr. mean green buddy had great game Defense continued to progress Another solid game by defensive backfield Special teams not as great as last week, but satisfactory Schilleci great tackle on Rice punt return Finney and Combs, 2nd year Jucos, play getting better and better Surprised at speed NT has this year Wilson boys, Ivery, and despite some opinions: Buyers has never been slow Hope and think this game will carry over to the MUTS game.1 point

Here I'll say more: https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/8145 http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/_/id/206829/josiah-tauaefa Doesn't look like anyone else wanted him either. So what? We've already got a roster of kids with only one FBS offer. So, because we didn't add one more because he was local, you and his little brother are miffed? Give it a rest. If he turns out to be a good player, that's one thing. But, kids with no or few offers to FBS schools are a dime a dozen. Well, from the looks of it, our analysis of him was no different than 126 other FBS schools. Kudos to UTSA...who waited until the week before signing day to offer? I mean they beat everyone from Alabama all the way down to Eastern Michigan for this kid, then. And, they did so at the wire. Please. Congratulations to him for UTSA taking a flyer on him when no one else would. But, man...ease up. I'm sure every high school football coach in the country has stories about kids who played hard, were nice, etc. not getting scholarship offers from FBS schools, near or far from home. UTSA recruiting trash talk. For a kid with no other offers. Wow. This how bad it is for us.1 point
-
Did we not beat UTSA last year? So...why do we care about a kid who plays MLB on a team that couldn't even beat us last year? I mean...come on. Texas State probably also has some starters that we didn't recruit...and vice versa.1 point

Do we really want to dredge that up? Is that worth anyone's time? Time to move forward folks. Anything that happened during McCarney's time is water under the bridge now.1 point

Captain obvious here, not sure why you are citing multiple recruiting sins of the prior staff when nobody is defending them. It should be fairly obvious when I stated "Mac couldn't recruit the Denton area or anywhere else". Being even more obvious, I doubt many coaching staffs put what a family wants above their own recruiting analysis ( no matter how flawed). Basically you are using the same rationale that I was referring to, I guess this was not so obvious. Old NT should be happy to get interest from any recruit and particularly a local one. I was making a general comment, and not referring so much to Josiah Tauaefa. However, maybe UTSA should be given credit for signing a relatively lightly recruited small defensive lineman and seeing a future linebacker.1 point
-
Mac couldn't recruit the Denton area or anywhere else. However, it is really very easy to point out local players who were not recruited that are doing well. There is also a bigger lot of kids not recruited that will never be a factor anywhere. Is the bother mad at UT or OU because they didn't recruit his brother also? No it is NT who many deem should be happy to get interest from anyone. Every team has hits and misses in recruiting, even the giants of the collegian football world. I certainly think NT should review any player that is interested in NT, but there is a resource issue. At some point, most identified prospects are going to be dropped to concentrate on higher regarded players depending on who may be available. Some of the dropped players will turn out to be better than players signed, but hopefully that number is small.1 point
-
Mac was clueless in recruiting and did us no favors, but no matter the coach, we will not get them all. I wish we could have got this kid. He seems talented. Coach Lit and staff are getting out there, no matter what his family says. Let's give him a chance.1 point
