  1. The Bahamas Bowl would be a gift from God Thaddeous Thompson's Father here, and we are of Bahamian decent, a lot of family there, and that would be awesome to play there. Thaddeous is named after his Bahamian Grandfather!!!

  4. I'm taking a group to the Army game in a couple weeks and I'm preparing a North Texas/Mean Green primer for the group so they can learn a little about the university and our football history. I'm listing various famous alumni and football players and get to a point where I'm talking about retired jersey numbers. At this point I realize that while I've seen the name and number (55 Richard Gill) in the Apogee end zone, I'm somewhat embarrassed to say I don't really know much (if anything) about him. Doing a little research I found this: "An all-conference linebacker for North Texas in 1968 and 1969, Gill was a popular and outspoken team leader. Playing alongside Hall of Fame teammate Joe Greene, Gill was part of the original “Mean Green” defense as it was nicknamed in the late 1960’s. Scheduled to return for his senior season in 1970, Gill met an untimely death when a blood clot reached his lungs following a routine surgery for a knee injury he suffered on the practice field. He was survived by his wife and son and a daughter, who was born after his death. In 1971, Gill was the first North Texas player to have his number retired." This site refers to Legends of the Mean Green: Richard Gill #33. https://exhibits.library.unt.edu/legends-mean-green/richard-gill-33 So, here's the confusing stuff. According to this, his number was 33 (the same a Ray Renfro), not 55 and it says his was the first player to have his number retired. So if his was the first number retired, why isn't it 33 Richard Gill instead of 55 Richard Gill? Also, the write up says he was an all conference linebacker in '68 and '69, but the 1968 Yucca photo and caption describe him as a running back and number 33. The Yucca from 1969 shows a picture of a defensive (#55) Richard Gill. Today, he'd probably get flagged for targeting on that hit! OK, so after a little more digging, it looks like the #33 photo (1968 Yucca, 1967 football season) was from the freshman football team. I'm not sure why the exhibits.library.unt.edu site chose to use a freshman team photo of him. I assume the #55 photo (1969 Yucca, 1968 football season) was when he was a sophomore? Did he switch from running back to line backer between his freshman and sophomore years? Are these two Richard Gills the same person? In the end a tragic story especially since he was married with two children, but I've learned a bit more about #55 Richard Gill on our Apogee end zone wall.

  5. Okie State vs Purdue in the 2013 HOD Attendance 48,313 Just think if we would have played a team that bought more than 500 fans. But NO to regular season game at Cotton Bowl OR Jerry World. If A&M and Baylor can play at Ford Field, they can play at Apogee.

  6. Cerebus, isn't it a little early to grade the hire? Where are the graphs and charts? How come I can't see who voted for what? Can we expect a follow-up after the season?

  7. Hey Dude, I am with you on both games. Thaddeous Thompson's Father here. Thaddeous Grandmother and two Aunts live i El Paso, so we will be at that game. Let me know how I can fit in to what youy are doing. Also, we live in Cibolo Texas, which is a suburb of San Antonio, we will be at that game suffice it to say, I was thinking about having a BBQ that day either at my house or at the Alamo dome. Thoughts???

  10. I really felt like the downfall of the Mccarney was not only due to bad recruiting, but due to bad recruiting when we had momentum and things going for us as a program. Mccarney failed miserably with a 2012 class filled with players with weak offer lists, coming off a very impressive 5-7 season where he nearly matched Dodge's win total after just one season. Then in 2013 we struggled despite the announcement that we would be moving to CUSA. Finally, between our HOD bowl game and nine months later when we played our first game, recruiting really was unimpressive despite finally being able to show off a bowl victory and impressive season to recruits. That was the beginning of the end before the 2014 season even started. We have a lot going for us. It's time for us to start getting big time recruits who 5 or more other FBS programs want. Or get players here and there with lower-tier P5 offers like Iowa State, Kansas, Purdue. We're close and it's awesome.

  12. YES. But only if we still get at least 6 home games at Apogee too. Figure that out and you have my vote.

  13. No. No. No.... No to SMU in Dallas. No to anyone else in Dallas. Denton is our home. If they don't want to play in Denton, then we don't play.

  15. Thanks, Its been a long rode, a lot of hard work, and some heartbreak, but I am glad he is in Denton with UNT. I agree, DB's are having trouble getting physical with him. He tells me all the time, that he loves when DB's try that because he is stronger than they are so he dispatches them and gets into his routes. If he can make a few more big plays, it will open up the offense for others.

  21. Already covered a few weeks back: -Houston and Rice do it to get bigger schools to agree to play them. Gate being the same or equal, they go ahead and do it. And, they generally get better TV exposure from the games. -Alabama does it because no big time school will play them OOC at Bama, Saban claims. Some of our fans oppose it because: (1) they live in a dream world where college football scheduling is easy, and (2) the same dream world they live in says that other schools, also vying for more OOC home games will magically set that inclination aside just to play at Apogee, a stadium that seats less than 35k.

  23. I find it weird that some alums would go to the HoD game and won't ever come to Denton. If that is the case then maybe they're the issue. Denton isn't not more than 30-45 mins away for most of the metroplex so building a pipeline in Dallas doesn't make any sense to me because Denton is part of DFW as a whole.. If people want to come to Denton then they will...if they don't then they simply won't. I just think the school and athletics program haven't ever really given our alums to care enough to come to Denton and be connected. We have to fill up Apogee every game first and we only achieve that by winning and winning big including consistently flirting top 25 ranking. We have Apogee and built it for a reason.

  24. The day we can fit 90k+ in a stadium is the day we can maybe consider something like this. The Cotton Bowl is way way big. We had what 38-40k for the HoD Bowl and the amount of emptiness of the stadium was still extremely much. That said we don't need a State Fair game. We're just 30-45 minutes north of the fair and if you don't want to drive you can even get there via the rail. Let's try to sell out Apogee first and keep on winning and building momentum.

  25. my thought is that we built Apogee to keep from having to go out of town to play people. we were told that building a new modern stadium we would get the type of opponent in Denton that other G5 schools are able to get. We haven't gotten that but the notion that we'd pack up and play a "home" game on the road just doesn't pass the "say what " test. I can't imagine the articles and the protests of people that would remind us why we closed a golf course and built the best stadium in the country. Only to play a marquee game 35 miles down the road. The only way I want North Texas in the Cotton Bowl is if we're in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. Please put me in the "no thank you" column. Beat Army next week. Then, beat the rest of our schedule. GO MEAN GREEN

  27. Cotton Bowl Stadium: 95,000 seats SMU vs UNT ? (Many empty seats ) When SMU vs UNT eventually maxes out Apogee with 35,000 SRO put that number inside the CB Stadium at Fair Park & you still have 60,000 empty seats. Shouldn't we all be tired of empty seats galore by now? DO IT IN DENTON! GMG!

  28. If we could work a yearly UNT/SMU game in the Cotton Bowl during the Fair and keep 6 games in Denton during the years UNT is supposed to be "home" in that series, I would be on Cloud 9. That would be an amazing schedule.

  33. Congrats on Thaddeous's success this year. Clearly this offense fits him so much better than last year. Hoping he continues to play well. He is one of the only receivers having any success when the DBs try to get physical and play press coverage. Good stuff!!

  37. The Cotton Bowl hosts 3 football games during the fair: the Grambling game, the Texas/OU game, and the Air Force game. Maybe North Texas should look into an annual showcase against UTSA or UTEP at the Cotton Bowl during the last weekend of the fair. I'm sure we'd have to find a game sponsor to pay the stadium bill, but we might get some better coverage and could build a regional rivalry. Thoughts?

  40. Just take 121 to US 75 and take a right. Go 3 miles and you are pretty much at Fuzzy's in Allen. Hank and Dave do a bang up job, but it doesn't compare to watching the game. I'm sure there is someplace closer to you that'll put it on if you don't want to make that drive.
