  1. This is my first post. My name is Doug Rush and I am the head baseball coach at Tomball High School. I grew up in Denton and played on the North Texas club baseball team in 82 and 83 and on its varsity program in 84 and 85. We were not very good but we were not given a chance to be either. I graduated from North Texas in 1986. I coached at Denton High until 1992 before I left to pursue head coaching opportunities. I love Denton and I love The Mean Green despite the terrible way they treated baseball in the 80's. Anyway, I am a personal friend of Mike Jinks. We coached together and ran around together when he was right out of college and we were coaching at Killeen Ellison High School. I am telling you right now that the moment I met him I knew he was destined for greatness. He was a great quarterback at Converse Judson and a legendary quarterback at San Angelo State. And yes he loves to throw the football for you guys that were inquiring. Mike will light up a room with his personality. The kids he coaches love him. He is a great football mind and he has all the intangible to be a GREAT head college football coach. And Mike wants the U.N.T. football job. I believe he will be incredible at recruiting, at assembling a staff, at promoting the city of Denton, and at promoting our university. He is a humble but confident guy and he never meets a stranger. Other coaches would love to work for him because he would be a guy you work with and not for. I sure hope he gets the opportunity to at least interview because I think he has a great plan in place for when he gets his opportunity.

  3. I'm not sure him having texas ties helps us too much.

  5. After reading more about him. Out of all the realistic possible choices for next coach at UNT. He could very well be my new favorite candidate. Now don't get me wrong I LOVE Fritz, Applewhite, Norvell, Riley, Briles, and Thomsen. But I don't think that a few of these are ready or willing to take over a program like UNT and I think Fritz next move will be to a P5 school. Now here are the reason why I think Jinks would be a good fit. 1) There is several similarities with him and Papa Briles. Longtime and successful High school head coaches. Both running back coaches at Tech. And both in the their early 50s when they get their first shot at coaching D1 football if Jinks came to UNT. 2) He would bring an uptempo offense 3) Lots of Texas ties. I would hope he would get some assistants to help build relationships with DFW and east texas area. but as far as the San Antonio area it sound like he is a living legend down there and could really open up a pipeline out of their. And I think we all would love picking players right out of UTSA backyard. 4) UTSA is practically begging for this guy to be their next head coach on their message boards. He is like the Lincoln Riley, Briles or Fritz of rowdy talk. So it would be nice to snag him right out from under them. 5) Kliff had to think alot of him to promote him to associate HC in a short time. 6) I think he would be energize and has a tract record of winning. As long as he can bring in good assistants I think he would be about the best hire we can make at this points. Definitely hands down better than anyone else on Vito lists unless the mystery candidate is golden ticket. Idk just my opinion may be way off

  6. I want the coach to be told if he ever says the six words "it's too tough to recruit here," that's his resignation. He has to sound as positive as he did in the job interview even in hard times.

  7. We're hopefully one week away from hiring a new football coach. In fact, the person could already have agreed to the hire and we could hear the name leak out before next Monday. I would almost expect it to leak out before hand (perhaps as early as this week) if it's one of the bigger names like Briles, Jinks, or Meacham. If we're not ready with an announcement next week I'll be extremely disappointed and agitated because I'm impatient. I'm ready for the off-season to begin in earnest. I'm ready to hire new assistant coaches (and maybe keep one or two of the current ones). I'm ready to read about changes a new coach is making in off season training. I'm ready to look at recruiting especially for new offensive and defensive systems. I'm ready to look at who might transfer to us from a school the new coaches are coming from. I'm ready for quarterbacks to be recruited and maybe transfer in who can give us hope for quality play. I'm ready for spring ball. I'm ready for (hopefully) OPEN fall practices. I'm ready for the excitement heading into the opening game of 2016. However, I am not ready for our team to struggle mightily next season ... but that's not for another ten months. I'll take all the positive vibes heading into next season I can get. As a fan base we need that.

  12. "Doug great to hear from you and thanks for sharing the info on Coach Jinks. I was at UNT about when you were (graduated in '90) and was saddened when they dropped baseball. The good news is there seems to be some momentum to bring it back again. Hopefully this will provide an opportunity to reconnect with former players such as yourself down the road. I am hearing really good things about Coach Jinks and your comments on him as an alum, former UNT letterman and coach carry some weight. Thank you again for sharing your thoughts with us." Harry. Thanks. Trust me I am keeping up with the progress on re-starting baseball. It is something I think is long overdue at U.N.T and I am really happy to see it in the plans. But I will save that discussion for another time. I really want to promote Mike Jinks --- he is a real good fit in my opinion.

  15. This is kind of a no-win topic of conversation for the coach who is the bread on the McCarney sandwich. Chico: "I never saw this coming." What the hell -- how could you be so blind to not see this coming? Chico: "I saw this coming." What the hell -- how could you see this coming and fail to prevent it?

  19. Thank you for this post. It is great to hear from someone who knows Mike Jinks and believes him to be an Excelkent candidate for our HC job. I, too, hope he gets a chance for that interview. He is lucky to have friends like you in his corner.

  21. He is quickly becoming that under the radar coaching prospect that comes out of no where to nab the job. I'll admit I have a list of 40 names that I started developing the coach tracker from. He one of the very few I didnt have. He checks off most of the boxes. Everything you read and see about him impresses. While maybe not being a splash hire, he could certainly be the right hire.

  31. Apples to oranges. Briles had 5 years experience as a college head coach at Houston before going to Baylor. Jinks has no college head coaching or coordinating experience. Jinks has a total of 3 years as a position coach. Now if you want to compare Briles success at Houston to Jinks coming here that's more apples to apples as Briles had 3 years as Techs RB coach before going to Houston. That is a comparison I can get behind. Briles needed 3 years at each school before he got Houston and Baylor rolling. That is a testament to his recruiting and how important recruiting is.

  32. Yeah, getting a coach who was successful at a Texas HS powerhouse has been such a failure for Baylor. The difference between in background between Dodge and Briles and Jinks is current P5 assistant experience. The path is HS head coach to college assistant and then going beyond.

  33. Agree, but the triple option would immediately make our defense better by keeping them off the field for longer periods of time.

  37. Baylor just beat previously unbeaten OkSt using a second and then third string QB. Who do you think will get most of the credit for that? I believe that would be the OC. Which raises young Coach Briles' stock considerably with the big schools. Looks like he just moved way out of our price range.

  38. Fritz took over GSU in 2014. In 2013 GSU played in FCS and went 7-4. They played one FBS school and got throttled. Fritz has gone 16-6 in two years so far while only playing two FCS teams. That is the exact same number we have played, except Fritz beat both. Monken built a good FCS program, but Fritz has coached them in FBS. His recruiting those two years has buried us. Before that, Fritz took over FCS SHSU in 2010. The previous coach, Todd Whiten had lead SHSU to a 25-28 record over five years and never got them into the playoffs. Frfitz took that program and went 40-15 over the next four years, getting to the national championship twice (those NDSU teams are tough). His recruiting was also great there. Before that, he was at DII Central Mizzou for 13 years. So you can't say he is some spoiled by excess P5 darling. Over the last five years Fritz has gotten post season eligible every year and lost a grand total of five conference games. You can consider those wins to be the dregs, but guess what, most people consider CUSA to be a dreg conference. If he can come in here and beat the dregs, get us bowl eligible most years and recruit like he has everywhere else then BRING IT ON. I would much rather beat the dregs than get hammered 41-7 by a conference mate that is barely above .500, it's no brainer.

  39. This kind of question is pointless. But as a point of fact, it is almost impossible for the next coach to take us further down than we are at the moment. This is the nadir. We aren't competitive in games even against old Sun Belt foes. The toughest job in Denton is to compile a Mean Green highlight reel after games. We're playing poorly in every facet of the game. When you see how Fritz's team played against Georgia last night, it seems absurd to think he'd be another McCarney here. His 153-68 record shows he can win. Doing that in CUSA is not a herculean task.

  44. Then why are you on our fan board when we played you 3 weeks ago? I swear, Craphole fans are the most insecure lot in college football. We don't hate you. We view you in the same way SMU views us. Get it?

  45. What if RV hires your man that you have advocated so hard for (Fritz) and we sink further down to the core of the earth? Knowing you, it would somehow be RV's fault because the lack of "support" or some other hot garbage you could muster up. But admitting being wrong is a thing I think you would have an issue with. Full disclaimer: I am not defending Rick Villarreal in any shape or form.
