  1. Yeah, you're right, I have never seen a company use a customer referral incentive program before. But if I do, I will make sure I tell them it's not logical and they should only use paid employees to do that.

  2. Preface for context, since I didn't answer in the other thread: I am a Dickey bowl-era guy. Graduated in '03. I marched on the field for the 2001 NO Bowl vs. Colorado State. Playing America The Beautiful that year with Red Raider band atCowboys Stadium was very special. As was sharing the field with the Ram band as we held together that football-field wide America-shaped flag during the NO Bowl halftime show. Chris Davis is one of my personal all-time favorite Mean Green ballers. The last 3 years it has been: 1 football game/year. Absence mostly due to work/travel on weekends. 1 basketball game/year. Maybe. I remember I attended the UTEP game last year. I don't know if I would go on weekends now even if I didn't have to work. I used to be counted on 5+ mid-week games every year, even when living in Lewisville and working at 6am the next morning. Now, I'm just another victim of Benford. halfway through Benny's first year, I canceled my MG Online Premium account and personally emailed RV. It was not about the feed quality (or lack thereof), it was about the quality of basketball. He was gracious enough to personally reply, citing reasons that only left me wondering if the ol' ball coach had any eye at all for good game. I knew I was witnessing a train wreck in the making. EDIT FOR FOLLOW UP THOUGHT: I know I am no ball coach, but I feel after years of watching both games, I have developed an eye for basic things: effort. players inspired/executing. I think the same could be said about a lot of us: even though we will never be in a position to coach professionally, our opinions still have validity. There are tons of free resources out there available to all of us to learn the game. Resources authored by the legends who started the sports. I've personally watched through several rebuilding projects between UNT/UTEP. Some notable ones include Mike Price and Billy Gillespie at UTEP. Todd Dodge/Karen Aston, etc at UNT. Even during a poor start, you can almost immediately see whether this coach was the right hire. BG's first team won 6 games. But the effort and focus on the court was night and day different. There was nothing shameful in those 15+ losses. Coaches from other teams were very vocal (positively) about BG's 1st year...seemingly way beyond normal coach speak. It only took a couple games with Benford to identify something was terribly wrong. The hire seemed okay up front, but it became apparent very quickly that this guy would be learning on the job. It's the lack of action since then that has me beyond angry. I'm just apathetic about the whole bball program right now.

  3. Like I tell my wife, they did it so you would have something else to complain about. Good grief. It's a perfectly logically approach, it encourages everyone to participate vs giving up if they feel like they can't get 40 or 50 referrals to get the prize. #wrinkledhundreddollarbill

  4. So, it's your position that since the athletic department hasn't done some things as well as it should have, they shouldn't do anything? They don't "soley" rely on this - it's just started. I hear lots of folks on here complaining because athletics doesn't do enough to increase MG club and season tickets. Here they are at least trying something successful businesses do and you just want to complain about that. I am not happy with results or a lot of what has gone on with the athletic department. I think there should be more accountability for results (scheduling should improve, coaches and AD should be accountable, more should be done to increase season tickets, etc). But I ABSOLUTELY WILL SUPPORT it when they try to do something good.

  5. I'm impressed with the quality of Josh Greer's character. He could've told Shaq to stay away because of the way his season went but he didn't. He still sold the program. You have to admire that.

  7. Or two prizes, a drawing and something for whomever brings the most. If you just do a who brought the most prize then you dramatically cut the number of participants. Only a few know enough people to get the most, but almost everyone can find 15 people. Frankly, I'm happy they are just trying something different. I'm happy they are making an obvious effort at trying!

  8. The subopic of the When&What did you graduate with thread with got me thinking. The idea that so many posters experienced Dickey's Bowls or JJ's Conference Tourney/Big Dance fun times is really interesting. For me a combination of NO Bowl Win my freshman year, Buckles destroying people at safety, and general Jamario awesomeness, along with along with the sport I seem to remember called basketball...served their purpose to suck me into the fold for a decade plus. I used to schedule my life around every home roundball and oblongball sports game, with vacations scheduled around said bowl or tournament games. I haven't sniffed a roundball game since 3/4 through Benny's first season and for the first time ever found my oblong season tickets going unused 3 of the 4 final games this season. I feel dirty every single game I miss, but eventually you just quit letting things ruin your day/week when you legitametly don't feel it does the same for those in charge of all of it. I wonder how many else of my peer group are still hanging in or how long you can expect those that didn't get to see the fun I experienced to stick it out?

  17. Does anyone think that last year about this time the Texas Christian University Horny toads were happy with the direction of their program? What was their record last year? They damned near if not for some bad luck and some bad defense at the end of the Baylor game walked into the 4 team tournament this year. We should all tap the brakes a little on football.... Basketball.......another story.
    1 point
  18. First, about the last paragraph: Grow up and stop whining. No one is saying you are a bad fan, so stop crying for attention. Just like those of us that are disappointed and are severely concerned about the direction of both programs aren't bad fans, right? Right? Recruiting is about 60% of the battle in college football, developing those recruits are also important. Macy's first full year of recruiting was 2012. A year in which he could sell his coaching newness and the promise of changing the losing culture of UNT football, along with a new stadium. He has, what, 6 guys left on the roster from that class? That is bad recruiting and is very concerning. If that doesn't concern you, it's because you are more concerned with being an optimist than you are at looking at cold, hard numbers. And that's fine, just don't get all pissy when people point out the problems with this program.
    1 point
  19. Not saying that he can't, but the one good year in ten bad ones is a lot of the reason that there is so much negativity. If Mac can right the ship next year and put together a few good ones, then the tone should change. This is a beat up fan base right now since we don't have basketball to hang out hat on when football is down.
    1 point
  20. One could argue that we had one up year.
    1 point
  21. I just don't get the negativity at the moment. Basketball could go either way this year, so that's a moot point but one down year in football, and fans are dropping like flies? Last year was probably NT's finest football moment as a fan. Beautiful stadium, a real coach, a competitive budget, competitive salaries, real helmets, alternate uniforms, new conference full of Texas teams, record student attendance, Denton Game Day Champion/shuttle initiative...and you know as well as I do, Mac is going to get a highly respected D coordinator. Sorry if I just don't get the negativity because this season was such a disappointment. Am I disappointed? Let's just say if you knew me, the answer would be yes. More so than I'd say many people would assume I would be, I think. Do I think football is pointed up? Absolutely. And do I think men's basketball is pointed up? I do. Much has been made of recruiting, but I just don't buy recruiting rankings. Mac is looking for players that fit his system, and he's done a decent job of it. Once they're here, he builds them up. This year, I thought the QB position was going to be much better. It wasn't, I was wrong. But despite the harping on Mac's recruiting, I think the rest of the team held up well, and there's a lot of talent there redshirting. If you take away some of the more insane QB performances we had, this is a 6-6/7-5 which is respectful. If we can get a real solid D1 quarterback in here (whether or not they're on the roster or not) this team can make the jump. I guess that my inability to be negative about the direction of the program makes me not a real fan.

  22. The fact that we aren't scheduling at home equal to ULM is the big deal, not what we paid for an FCS team. ULM isn't paying Baylor to come to Monroe, they are scheduling series with them. They understand that since they can only play 5 home ganes some years, they need to bring in teams that matter for their fans. At UNT, we just give the fans crappy FCS teams as the line home OOC during those crappy 5 home game schedules. This signals a basic misunderstanding by our AD on how to increase attendance and build a fan base. Frustrating.

  23. ^^ the only thing i can think is that we were playing for next year..trying to find a QB.. playing Goree with a QB that cant give him the ball is pretty much a waste. He would need a qb who can throw a jump ball our qb's under throw receivers.

  24. I was surprised to see Nick Orr getting playing time as a true freshman. Also desmon white has been getting in some situational playing time. I'm sure he doesn't know the whole offense, but TCU has found a way to get these youngsters some reps. Looking at our team, how does goree not get some reps...

  25. I don't like it either, but kids say it all the time. Even Tee Goree did. You can blame LeBron, who started saying it, and the media who makes LeBron the spectacle that he is.

  27. Could a conference be put together that rivals the monopoly of the big 5? How about the Continental Conference with 16 teams starting with Boise, Air Force, NIU, Houston, BYU, Marshall, etc.

  28. To add to this, 32 teams collectively broke down into 8 team divisions that geographically make sense. Call them East, West, North and South. Play a round robin amongst the divisions to create division champs and hold a 4-team playoff for CUSA championship. If you can't beat the system, clog the system.

  29. I do not think $mu will beat us recruiting. $mu has lost 2 players who have decommited from the phonies who have reopened up their recruitment. One of these players is a 4 star rated QB. So if a North Texas prospect commits to Ohio State that is OK. But if a player commits to the phonies, then we are getting our ass kicked? I don't think so! $mu recruiting is fighting other programs for players, just like North Texas is doing. Lets see how recruiting turns out on Feb 4th, 2015.

  35. I don't see Chris decommitting from Wisconsin. I just hope for Chris's sake that Wisconsin doesn't pull his offer. I know he has plenty of other options, but he really likes Wisconsin the school, not the coach. Academics matter to the Orr family. It only takes one discussion with Mrs. Orr to understand this.

  38. No on one and done. There are two basic types of donations here. You can help fund capital projects, ie football stadiums, baseball stadiums basically anything facility related. The second type is an annual contribution to student athlete scholarships, ie mean green club. After our capital contribution to the stadium, we have done both. I still get no better feeling than sitting in the stadium before a game, looking over the back of the visitors side, and seeing the tailgating going on by students up on the hill. (after cooking for six hours myself and feeding roughly 200 people per game) I also never feel worse than after a loss. To answer the question above. North Texas does a lot wrong. We have a flawed system that appoints our ultimate leaders. We have some great regents that care a lot about this place, but some I question their dedication to make the hard decisions. Our development department is out there listing in the wind, waiting for some direction. Our football team won 4 games this year, that is not what expectations are. But this is our place. Your place. It needs to be lifted up. We need more fans. We can't get more fans by only public bashing of everything that goes on here. Excuse me for being positive guy. I will continue to find positives in everything that we do. I will continue to try to get new people involved and to events. And.......the above will be about the most negative thing you will see me say on an internet board, even though there has been some screaming, yelling and dog cussing going on in suite 13 and at my home address. 39. Two things--first of all, Mike Leach would never get hired here. He speaks his mind, complains ALOT, and doesn't like to glad-hand with boosters. Can you imagine the reactions of the big money donors here or the BOR members the first time Mike Leach toild them that we were serious about football and that he wasn't going to rub elbows with the few big boosters we do have? There would be pandemonium in Denton. He wouldn't even get an interview... Secondly, and most importantly, Leach would cost too much...the end.

  42. UNT90 is 100% correct and in the right now on this issue. We should all be enraged. It is time for RV to go. I have been mostly quiet on this (RV is still a saint to me over when I look back in history at the big picture) but it is time for a new AD to take us in a new, better direction with this overall program. Our program has stagnated apart from the performance on the field. The two can and should be separated and we should demand more and accept no less now. I am sick of the apathy being shown towards the situation, the lack of communication and the lack of WANT to make things better from the AD office's perspective. Yes, I understand our olympic sports are all doing well, kudos on that. Don't care. That isn't enough and RV knows it, the BOR knows it, the president of NT knows it (if we hooked him up to a lie detector test). The question now is how much lack of progress are we ALL willing to accept. At this point it is staring everyone in the face.
