He didnt do anything to win the job either. Our best drives of the season were with dajon. He has given us the best qb play. He has also given us the worst. Against weak comp, dajon has looked real good. Usm was a weak team. He could have lit them up. Instead we went with McNulty. We lost to a bad team. He did not look bad, but he did not look good either. Out of all our qbs, dajon is the only one that has had some successful drives against decent comp. Like some have said, he just needed the playcalling to be more conservative. We lost to usm. McNulty could be benched for that alone. I would rather means get experience these last 5 games if we cant even win usm. What happens if we start getting blown by rice? Something tells me Rice is going to get a lead, McNulty is going to struggle and dajon comes in the second half. Hes going to look good and we are all going to wonder what if he would have started against usm.4 points

The state of Mississippi has more players on NFL rosters per capita than all states but Louisiana and South Carolina. They had 32 NFL players on rosters in 2013. Calling that state limited in talent isn't true. USM gets huge advantage in that state by not having any other G5 program to recruit against. Basically, if you are in that state and aren't recruited heavily by the SEC powers around you, USM is almost always going to be the next choice. In Texas, right now, there are 7 G5 schools. If you aren't picked off by a P5 school, then you are going to choose between UH, Rice, UTSA, Texas State, UTEP, SMU, and us if you are staying in state.3 points

Yes, the UNT Library system was partially funded by the state, and it should have been funded only with student fees. The UNT library, which is grossly underfunded and showing it, had nothing directly to do with the shortfall. Funding is determined way above the paygrade of librarians or even the dean.2 points

Never ever would DT have been wallowing in self-pity on twitter. It took me until his senior year to admit I was wrong about him. I openly mocked his signing. But, at the end of the day - as our current roster of QBs are sadly proving - college football is not easy at this level. Derek persevered on and off the field. Through injury. Through losing seasons. Through coaching changes. Imagine a quarterback in 2014 with his mental toughness and knowledge of the playbook. Hope McNulty will step up to the plate and help deliver a victory this weekend. Notice I say help deliver a victory. It's a team game. If everyone can cut down the mistakes at every position and hit their assignments, this team can still win. But, everybody has to help.2 points

That is all good news. Last game was the first time I can think of (other than Tulsa a couple years ago) that McNulty was really given a chance to be "the guy". Maybe he can build off last game and help the team string some wins together.2 points

It was great to get TV and finally learn what everybody at work was talking about. Before then, when we all sat around on Saturday afternoons watching the radio, I never could figure out why we were doing that, except that all those different colored tubes looked kind of cool. Then, we got that first TV and I realized: we had been watching the radio to practice watching the TVs that Mac was bringing.2 points

Hey, one thing that hasn't been mentioned is the Rice player that pissed on our stadium last year. Which of our players will return the favor? Where is Big Dick Abbe when we really need him?2 points

Something else that I hadn't thought of before now...remember last year, when nobody projected we would do all that well our first year in the conference and everybody scheduled us for their Homecoming games? Derek Thompson worked extra hard in the offseason to win his job back and everyone's questions about the defense turned out to be unwarranted as they ended up being better than expected, plus of course we had Brelan. In addition, some of our competition, like USM, La Tech, etc. had down years last year. So maybe this year we're getting what we should have expected last year? I know that doesn't justify the poor performance against a USM team that's still struggling, but last year had a lot of pleasant surprises and this year, not so much. Essentially, is this the season we should have expected to deal with last year?2 points

I go back to looking at whether or not I think Mac is hurting the program. I see the growth in numbers at the camps. I perceive there to be more respect from the media. I see larger student turnouts. I see more alumni turnout. When those trends start reversing themselves, I may change my mind, but for now I am keeping a stiff upper lip and focusing on the longer term. I would not be opposed to infusing some energy with a new coordinator or two. Mac's job is to hire strong coaches and give them the authority to manage their area and recruit. To a lesser extent, he also has to play to the larger boosters to make them feel involved. He is basically the manager and motivator. The face of the program.2 points

I suppose that this announcement would've caused some controversy and debate about a month ago. And now here's the one time I'm ever, in my life, going to make an "At least with Dodge statement." At least with Dodge, as horrible as we were, deservedly permanent residents of the bottom 10, laughing stock of the nation, hapless and hopeless, at least back then, the fans still cared. I don't know what Mac's doing anymore, and I don't really care.2 points

You implied throwing TD's in garbage time was easy. It's not. I proved that, based upon the production of a QB you love. If throwing TD's in garbage time is not easy, it has some value. Despite how terrible the UAB game was, the highest performance any UNT QB has had this year is DW @ Indiana. He also has the most potential. I didn't say that, the coaches did. Repeatedly. So we have a QB with a lot of potential, who has already shown more than any other QB. He has one terrible game and we sit him? Doesn't make sense.2 points

Well, when your two stops are Iowa State and North Texas and you've produced five bowl teams I'd say at least a few more years.2 points

One the dumbest threads ever. How can you make the broad sweeping comment that Mac knows nothing. Why don't we see how the season plays out then we can evaluate the team/coaching? I believe Mac does know what he is doing and good things take time. Tom Landry won 5 or fewer games his first 5 seasons. " When tend to forget that all good things take time."- John Wooden Do I think Mac is the next Tom Landry? No. Do I believe this board over-reacts? Yes.2 points

WE'LL NEVER KNOW IF HE DOESN'T PLAY. That is how players get better. They don't magically become gamer when the guy in front of him graduates. You can see the effect of inexperience all over this team right now because we never had enough rotation or second team unit swaps last year. I think we have hit or are very near minimac's ceiling, and that is getting 20 points against a defense that averages giving up 36.5, what can DW do? Hell if I know exactly, but I know he'll never reach it sitting.2 points

This. People get way overly keyed up about size and speed, which is too often mistaken for "athleticism." Unless we are talking about sprinting, straight line speed is nothing for football. Some kids are born big, but do not have the "killer instinct" that makes them hate to lose. The instinct that drives them to work hard in the off season to prepare for the battles ahead during a long season. Some kids are born fast, but do not have other traits, which coupled with speed, would make them exceptional players. To wit: (1) What good is speed to a defensive back who does not have agility or is not disciplined enough to learn the techniques required to play the position at this level? (2) What good is speed to a wide receiver who cannot catch the ball or who is not disciplined enough to learn the plays, block, and properly run routes? (3) What good is speed to a running back who isn't patient enough to let his blocker open holes for him or who isn't agile enough to make defenders miss or who fumbles or who can't be counted upon to block well in pass protection? (4) What good is speed to a quarterback who won't learn the playbook or who doesn't assume leadership of the team or who can't complete passes or who turns the ball over? There are many different facets to being an athlete. No one with speed or strength alone should automatically be assumed to be "more athletic" than another player with less strength or speed. Where is agility? Where is intelligence? Where is mental toughness? Where is self discipline? All of these things, in equal part, make a successful athlete. When meshed together with hours, days, weeks, and years or hard work, instinct is then born of it all. A knack for knowing where to be; for seemingly "being in the right place at the right time" more than others. Many, many coaches have spouted this very true cliche: "You create your own luck through hard work." And, that work is not confined just to running, bench pressing and squatting. Football is not a 40 yard dash. Nor is it a bench press or squatting contest. Those things can tell a coach how hard a player is willing to work, thereby building up trust. These kids who are scholar athletes, their journey is just beginning. However, I have come to believe that many view it as the end. They've made it. Someone is paying for their school. They are taken care of for four or five year, so they don't put in all the work effort they should every time out. Or, they initially put in the work, discover that there are others in the program who are in front of them on the depth chart, so they mentally check out, only putting forth the minimum effort in order to keep their "ride" for the remainder of their eligibility. Work, work, work. Many of these player may have the raw materials to someday be successful athletes. But, at the end of the day, if they do not put in the work...they look up at the scoreboard someday, and realize they are having their asses handed to them by the likes of UAB. What else can a coaching staff do? They are 50% culpable because they lead the program. But, in every bargain there are two parties. And, if both parties do not hold up their end of the deal, the deal goes south. No matter what you think or believe about Dan McCarney, you are either blind, a fool, or a blind fool to believe that he hasn't busted his ass for our school and his team. At his age, he'd be crazy not to, because this may be the last shot he has to captain the ship at this level. What do we know about the players and their end of the deal? That is: for your scholarship, you bust your ass for the program as hard and long as your head coach does. If many of them are not putting up their end of the deal, they are cheating themselves, the coaches, the program, the school, the alumni, and the fans. And, if they slack here, they will slack throughout the rest of their lives. If pussy is more important to them, they will be losers. If dope smoking, getting drunk, and the general party scene is more important to them, they will be losers. If xbox and video games are more important to them, they will be losers. If hanging out with their friends is more important to them, they will be losers. If huntin' and fishin' is more important to them, they will be losers. If twitter followers and facebook friends/likes are more important to them, they will be losers. Winners sacrifice present pleasures for bigger and better future gains. So, at 2-5, you've got to ask yourself, what is it they are doing instead of learning the playbook? What are they doing instead of learning to run routes? What are they doing instead of watching game film? It's really past time for someone in that locker room to be a man and lead the team for the rest of the season. Commit himself to making the team better, then become the unpopular enforcer of making the rest of the team commit. Dan McCarney and his coaching staff can't go to their dorms and apartments every night, holds their hands, read them a bedtime story, give them milk and cookies, and tuck them in. It's time for them to be men. If I were a coach, and my team was 2-5 with few contributors, I'd go over to the Wal Mart that the players shoplift from and buy the biggest box of diapers I could find. And, while going over game film, I'd have the assistants hand out diapers to all the players who screw up, blow assignments, or don't give their best effort. And, I'd have them hand them out at practice all week to those who make the same errors in practice. What else can you do at this point? If they want to be pampered, give them Pampers. And, finally... ...I'd like to thank RV again for the great new helmets. Of all the things we traditionally bitch about, at least there won't be anymore helmet threads to go alongside the questioning of the coaches and players threads.1 point

Mac is a very good coach. North Texas simply is not to the point yet where the football program reloads instead of rebuilding. He's getting us there but is possibly taking longer than even he expected. I believe this season is over as far as being a bowl season. It's time to build for the future, especially concerning finding if either of our physically gifted young quarterbacks has the ability to lead this team. Both Greer and Williams seem to have ability but neither has played anywhere close to his potential.1 point
