So, the green team pulled away a bit in the second half to edge the white team in this the 4th year of the GMG.Com BB Classic! And what a fun day it was...we had two great honorary coaches in Vertrail Vaughn's for the green team and Hannah Christian for the white. Stepping in to do a "most interesting job" as our third referee was Brandan Walton. Also joint us as referees were Ex-UNT footballer Troy Kokjohn and ex-Cheer Squad member Matt Sherman. Thanks go also to our athletic department student managers and all the help they gave with the scoreboard, set-up, equipment, clock, etc. Our two coaches, UNT90 for the victorious green team and Andrew for the hard charging white team both did a fine job and I think a good time was had by all. And, what a nice turnout of fans and supporters this year! Wow...really appreciate everyone who came out to help support this game and out great Cheer Squad! Really nice to see the large group who made it to the back room at Rudy's for the after event beer and BBQ. Largest crowd I think we have had in our four years. So, thanks again to each and everyone who sponsored the event, played, volunteered, came to support the event and bid on some great silent auction items and to those who came to the after game party. I think we may have raised a record dollar total for the Cheer Squad as well....after I do the accounting and collect for the final few silent auction items, I'll post how the event did...dollar-wise in this thread. To those who helped make this happen....I cannot thank you enough. So, finally, let me again say a big thank you to our sponsors: Cross Timbers Equipment Company, Kokjohn Long Snapping, Addison Transportation, Rudy's BBQ and M Ben Designs! We have had some great walk-ons. I don't mind a bit if we start a bunch of Kenny Buyers, Chris Hurd, and Casey Fitzgeralds.4 points

....and didn't this same staff invite them to walk-on? I'm glad they didn't treat Kenny Buyers the same way. We would have missed out on a really great DB.4 points

If these kids don't like being yelled at then Coach Mac and Skladany are not the coaches for them. They both hold players accountable for mistakes and let them know when they've made one. Hope the Jackson brothers have grown since being yelled at in New Mexico for the lack of productive play.3 points

Benford was at NEB from 2006-2008. Both Miller & Alonzo Edwards transferred out at the same time3 points

Apologies. They invited them to walk on with the opportunity to earn a scholarship. It just means they have to prove themselves more. They have to prove themselves in drills in order to earn practice snaps. They have to prove themselves in those practice snaps that they can handle being in a game situation. Maybe one day they will earn a full ride. You can point to the success stories but more often than not walk ons don't ever see the field. They are valuable bodies that help out in practice.3 points

...for Karen Aston to get her first tourney win at Texas. Of course, for all of the many of you who supported and appreciated her the short time she was here knew it wouldn't take her long for that, right? LOL! Rick2 points

Anyone else have notes on yesterday's scrimmage? Always love Vito's but its great to get more opinions on what went down. I just need football in my life right now!2 points

I really liked her and was truly disappointed when she left. Of course she had to take the opportunity but it still stung. Glad she's having success.2 points

I know these two and watched them play in fort bend. Very hard working. Great additions.2 points

For me the big story is continued evidence that UNT is a great place for kids to come play. Hopefully we'll get more kids to see that before signing elsewhere. Specifically for these kids, even if they never start a game for us the added depth and competition can only push everyone to be their best.2 points

I'm sure if the coaching staff saw something in them in the reps they did get, they would be getting more. That the way college football go2 points

When I was a student, I liked smoking pot, getting drunk, and chasing tail. Should we make weed, whiskey and poon mascots?2 points

Once again......they invited them! And put them out there in full pads. And for what?2 points

I'm just wondering why they don't give the walk-on QB's any reps in the scrimmages.2 points

"Speed is a big deal, I just think size can wear you down in the second half and it may put more of the onus on the offense to build leads and start off strong." How many times did you see the D-line get worn down in the second half last year? How many times did you see the Dline wear out the opponents Oline in the second half? The answers will be the same for the up coming season.2 points

Hmmm, as of August 25th 2011 he left the team. And since that time where has he been?1 point

Yeah, I got him & the other guy I was talking to you about mixed up. Similar names1 point

Really, just about the worst school a Mid Major power could lose to in that situation, would be the Kentucky Wildcats with their history of cheating and dubious "legal" recruiting practices. I didn't actually think Wichita would win the whole thing, but losing to UK of all teams makes me ill.1 point

I had Nova in the Final Four as well. I often root against my bracket for the upsets sake, but I genuinely dislike UConn, so I didn't even have the joy of that going for the game. LOVED seeing Dayton get to the Sweet 16. Harvard was right there at the end...thought they might pull it out too.1 point

Given that DW has four years of eligibility, it seems the upside to him is well above the other QB candidates. If he is already showing flashes of genius now, can you imagine how good he'll be as a senior, barring injury? GO MEAN GREEN!1 point

I've been saying for 6 months, mid-season, wait til next year. DW is going to explode onto the scene. Some of my buddies of which are UNT alum or UNT students would ask who's DW. Well North Texas is getting ready to do special things. I know if DW gets the start the offense is going to be special granted he stays healthy. I have just been waiting for a moment that might allow him to pull away, sounds like it may have happened yesterday. He just needs to ride the momentum every practice. GMG1 point

.. ---Do you understand anything or remember any history...... ? Not all of our forefathers were Puritans.... and in fact the earliest settlers here were at Jamestown and Virginia area did not come for religious reasons... they came for economic reasons. Those who claim America was settled for freedom of religion are just stating a myth. And several groups they did come for religious reasons were usually not extending that freedom to others. Read history... England had already broken with the Catholic Church and except for that group they were not that oppressive to most Protestant groups as was true in many other counties...( Spain especially.. inquisition ) .. . .1 point

Everyone keeps on saying that we cant fire Benford because of money. From Vito's article it states if we fire him before the 5 years is up we are on the hook for the difference is he goes to another team.. So that brings my next question, what did Benford make at Marquette, and how much would he make as an assistant. My guess around 200k, so were on the hook for 150k plus a new head coach.. Straight from Vito "If UNT were to terminate Benford’s contract without cause, it would be required to pay him his monthly base salary multiplied by the number of months remaining on the contract. There is a mitigation clause in the deal that would reduce UNT’s financial obligation by an amount equal to the salary of any new job Benford would take after leaving the school"1 point

After this coming March we will still owe $1.280,000. The only other option is pay and reassign him and go with an interim, then hope TB moves on to another head coaching job. Reality is TB is here for at least another 2 years if not three. Stephens got three and Dodge was able to coach nearly midway through his 4th. What I want to see is someone be held accountable and make sure we never hand over one of our major three jobs to inexperience ever again. Rick1 point
