  1. You freakin jerk....Yes I said it. I don't give a rats ass about your loser classmate that chose to watch real football while we were in the Heart of Dallas Bowl, because 30,000 plus real butts with Mean Green ties were there. If you think that is not progress then just go away. Mail me your club seats that you worked so hard for you whiner, and I will by them from you. You may say that tailgate is a joke at our place, but I don't think it is a joke. We are building on an experience every year that needed to be built on. Are you going to be part of the solution, or are you going to just keep saying what a joke everything is? I read this board one day in a month and you are spewing the same crap. Write a new song please, because this one is getting old. But don't belittle the day that we had January 1st of this year, that is just not right.

  3. You said the money was there to buy out Benford. He still sucks, he is killing attendance, can't recruit, and is about to be left in charge of recruiting a huge class. When he fails to do a good job recruiting that class it will relegate us to mediocrity (at best!) for another three years! RV said he feels good about the direction of the program. By making public statements like that he is publicly hitching his trailer to Benford. He doesn't have to say anything, so please don't feed me a line about supporting his employee in public. If RV really believes that then it might be time for his seat to start getting warm.

  4. This part He's not saying we aren't showing progress. He's saying the pattern of neglect over years has caused people to lose faith in NT sports. Neglect is what is going on with the basketball program right now. If we are going to be a legitimate athletic college, then we need to show commitment, particularly to the big sports, rather than this indifference from the upper level leadership. But not my argument in the first place. 90 can stand up for his own self if you disagree with him. It just sounded like you were omitting part of his posts in your rebuttal.

  5. I didn't say it. Do you get that? And it was part of a bigger discussion. HOD was obviously a great step for this program. Stick your hand in the sand if you want, but that is just one example of conversations I have had with alums trying to get them re-involved here. Others have struck the same tone. Doing nothing while the basketball program is reduced to pre-JJ levels doesn't help. 5 home game seasons don't help. A part of the solution? Don't you think I am by trying to get people to tailgate and go to the game? Or is being part of the solution accepting everything the AD says and does and never disagree with them about anything? Ya, ya, ya. Disagree in private. That works for you, because ( thankfully) you give at a level that demands attention. Most people on this board can't give at that level. Do you think RV should be questioned? Ever? About anything?

  6. Ugh, you people. I'm beginning to doubt if you ever really went to college. Everybody knows it's pronounced "THE herpes.", as in "Oh snap, that lady that turned out to be a dude down in New Orleans in '04 gave me THE herpes". Just like "Oh no, my doctor said I've got THE diabetes" or "Hey y'all I'm a go on over to THE Wal-Mart". Or "SMU's Craig James may or may not have killed 5 hookers because they gave him THE herpes".

  7. Not from one person. He knows who he is. "I have college friends that go to UT games and laugh at my invite to tailgate". Then go to the damn UT games!!!! How am I missing the point?

  9. “I believe in natural gas as a clean, cheap alternative to fossil fuels,” she said at one point. Natural gas “is cheap, abundant and clean compared to fossil fuels,” she said at another. This is what Nancy Pelosi said on Wednesday about Natural Gas, which IS a fossil fuel. Shall we lampoon her, call her an idiot, or simply accept that it was a mistake and move on? Using one sentence soundbites to discredit someone makes NOBODY smarter, or more educated on a subject. I plead, again, with the folks engaged in this thread to stop trying to discredit the opposition, and rather listen to what they have to say and argue the MATERIAL, instead of try and destroy the person delivering it. ..the point being, we don't elect politicians because they are scientific geniuses, but because we agree with their philosophies overall, and feel they will evaluate what is presented them and come to conclusions similar to what we come up with.

  10. Same exact thing you said about the 2012 schedule. How did that work out for you? 5 home games, that's how. You said the same thing when I warned it was coming then as you are saying now. And we have at least one more in our future before 2019. It is telling that you are just fine with us sucking in either football or basketball, as long as the other is winning. You do realize that basketball was on the verge of a breakout when Benford took over, don't you? Those days are gone, and we are approaching Trilli days. As bad as we have been for as long as we have been, it always amazes me how some have ZERO tolerance for any questioning of how things are being done inside the UNT AD.

  16. This. I don't know how sure Fly actual is that Benford is the right guy. He damn sure isn't going to tell us on a public forum. We can only hope he is working behind the scenes to affect change.

  17. I don't give in. Still bothering him to come to games. He actually came to the UTEP basketball game. Of course he pointed out that it was a UTEP home game. Look, he will never be involved with UNT sports. His choice. It's just an example of the challenges we face, and leaving Bemford in place to destroy the basketball program will just reinforce those thoughts.

  18. I have about a dozen old 3.5 floppy disks. Last year I hooked up a USB 3.5 drive but I was only able to recover data from one disk. It contained some of my written assignments from college freshman English. I though I had written some good things but looking at it 24 years later it's not very good at all.

  19. All I read is how North Texas, forever, underfunded athletics. Someone mentioned when Fry left and how we ended up in D1AA. How in the world is that RV's fault? Flyonthewall isn't misreading anything. UNT90 spends every off season bitching about scheduling, RV, basketball, his Club seats,etc... Personally I could care less about the club seats. Every game some moron was dumping food over the railing on to the fans below. Once, it ks a mistake. Over and over, I don't think so. Anyway, back on topic. RV has accomplished more on his watch than any AD here ever. Athletic Center, Liberty Christian purchase, record donations from fans that were historically off limits, new stadium, naming rights sold to Apogee, selling club level naming rights, increased salaries for coaches and assistants, donations to fund the basketball practice facility, bowl games, etc.... Sure, he has had some errors in hiring Stephens, Dodge and Benford. Hell, many wanted JJ gone early in his tenure before he turned it around against weak nonconference opponents, and he still didn't consistently win conference. Half us wish we used TCU's model of success. Last I looked, they have sucked in basketball for years. Would you really be happy with that? Many schools are only successful in one big sport. TCU, SMU, A&M, Duke until this year, Florida State, Auburn, Alabama, etc... are a few that excel in football or basketball but not typically both. Many basketball experts nationally thought the Benford hire was the right hire, Aston was hired away by UT so I would rate that a good hire, Peterson's team was decimated with injuries this year so I would say it is too early to rate this hire, but he has ben successful, Mac was a steal and Kee looks like a good hire. RV is about 50/50 with his hires, but to blame him for not buying out the contract if we can't afford to is ridiculous. The blame could be laid at the feet of the alumni for not supporting the program or it could be laid at the feet of past administrations for not pushing for these donations. Either way, RV has worked to overcome decades of neglect. Has he been perfect? No, but who is? When I look at how things have changed since he has been here, I am honestly amazed at our progress in facilities, coach's salaries, upgrades, donations, conference affiliations, student spirit/involvement, etc... Forget about the alumni that still laugh at going to our games. It is their loss. Focus on those 40,000 that showed up January 1st and continue to build this program. In my humble opinion, RV has done much more good than harm, and again, I will wait until the 2015 football schedule is announced to comment/complain/applaud it. Speculating at this point is ridiculous and a waste of energy.

  25. I was going to start a pole, but don't think you can from a mobile device. Just an informal opinion poll. I will again not be buying season tickets for basketball. I refuse to care more about something than the people responsible for it. I may or may not buy individual game tickets, depending in how good we turn out to be in December. I won't mention UNT basketball to anyone. This can be fixed if someone would let go of their very foolish pride.

  32. Here's a kid who I've been keeping an eye on, who still has surprisingly yet to receive an offer. His name is Dakota Laws. He's an offensive lineman from Denton Ryan, and he was 1st-team All District and 2nd-team AP All-State Selection last year as a junior. He reports some interest from UNT on scout. Plays left tackle for Ryan, and is listed around 6'4" 285 lbs. http://drchighschoolblog.dentonrc.com/2013/12/ryans-laws-orozco-make-ap-5a-all-state-team.html/ http://recruiting.scout.com/a.z?s=73&p=8&c=1&nid=7377925 Highlights: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=84rHnR86PCA

  33. That wasn't the point. We all know RV had no control over it. The point is grads see us as small time because we continually project that image. Just like RV's comments to Vito.

  35. I remember one game in Jonesboro the Arkansas St student section was booing as the Mean Green walked down into the field... and throwing the horns down sign. Hey, it's Arkansas, family trees don't branch as often as they do in other states. The players just gave each other confused looks until one of them (Andy Blount?) yelled "So? We hate them too," and threw the horns down back at them.

  38. Are you willing to take a chance that we head back down, possibly farther down than we have been in the past 15 years? You say to get to the "next level," care to define what that means? We do know what we have with RV and we know that improvements have been coming steadily over his tenure. Since you seem to know the future, care to clue the rest of us in on how the future looks with a yet to be named next hire? Easy to say that you don't like the job RV is doing, but there is more uncertainty with an unproven commodity than there is with the person we currently employ to do the job and is doing an adequate job. Given RV's past coaching hires, one could predict that it is a 50/50 proposition. That would be true no matter who we have running the AD. If you have a magic formula for making all the right hires you should market that thing right now because you could make millions. How down do you think we are? I think that we are not in a terrible place at the moment. Could things be better? Sure they could. You act like there is a magic bullet that can be fired that instantly gets us in the SEC and we are one of the best programs in the country. Building a program takes time. I am not saying that RV is perfect, but I don't think that he should be fired either.

  39. Don't count me in the mob. I'm a fan of RV's. I don't know how you can look into the future with any AD... Although we can say we have baseball to look forward to! And as much credit as the students & Flyer and other folks should get for Apogee, Rick was the AD when that stadium was built. He should get credit for learning from his past mistakes (when the vote failed in 01/02?) and staying in the shadows to let the students lead the charge. He was the AD when we moved to C-USA. The past decade + under his leadership has been a rollercoaster, for sure, but it's trending in the right direction.

  40. As I stated earlier, I think Benford is a bad hire and he needs to go. As for the improvement from last year, as a big picture, we lost an NBA caliber player and moved to a tougher conference and increased wins (albeit with a weak non-conference schedule). I think he did just enough to buy himself one more year. Are we still a bad team? Yes. And I am happy to see that apathy is gone and the expectation of winning is in. I would love to see nothing more than for us to get back to winning 20 games a year and making runs at the conference championship. But you have to admit, we all had this outcome in the back of our minds when JJ left. Now on to RV. I first got to UNT in 2002. I don't know how you can look around campus, at the students, at the facilities, at what our football team accomplished last season, and not see a vast improvement from that point on. I really only have from 2002 on to put things into perspective. I just remember a friend visiting UNT for the first time in '02 and he came to the football game vs. ULM. His exact words to me were, "This is D1 football?". You take the crowd from that game, maybe 10,000 at best, and look at our homecoming game from this last season vs. UTEP and you tell me the difference. It is well documented on this board that Todd Dodge was huge failure, which is obvious. We were all fairly excited at first of his hiring, at the thought that he could make inroads to high school coaches and recruit well at the high school level. The recruiting wasn't the problem with Dodge, as evidenced by this last graduating class. But when it came down to X's and O's, he just didn't cut it. But, RV hit a home run with hiring McCarney. I could tell the first year Mac was in town how drastically better coached the football team was. The key now is retaining him and continuing to build on what he has done so far, which I have complete faith will happen. With all this said, I just don't see where RV's job should be on the line. He has done so much to raise the profile of UNT athletics, getting us out of the $#!* Belt and into a conference where we play teams that people have heard about and have a history of success. In regards to football, he has done a good job of scheduling and get us out of playing two or three body bag games a year. Like I stated, 2002 was my first year at UNT. We played at Texas, Arizona, TCU, and Alabama that year. We now have a home and home with SMU scheduled for years to come and Army right behind that. And then away games against respectable but winnable games at Indiana and Iowa.

  41. The same AD that blamed the players for last season? Not surprised.

  42. Anything less than 6 games is absolutely unacceptable. Just with that decision alone the AD's job status should be somewhat in question IMO.

  43. I think it was more along the lines of: "...there was not much interest in other candidates." Which could lead some to think that there was little interest in the job itself. I remember reading on here that Benford was in town within a week of JJ's resignation. If RV isn't returning calls for Kaspar, a proven coach (although one I don't think would have gone over well in the short term), think of others he probably didn't return.
    1 point
  44. I know that Fracshilla interviewed and wanted the job. I know that multiple coaches left messages on behalf of Kaspar, calls that were not returned. I know that UNT had a future NBA lottery pick (considered so at the time) on their roster. I know that many preseason publications had us as a mid major to watch. I know we were granted a spot in the preseason NIT for the first time in our history because if that potential. Revise history all you want, but there were plenty if experienced head coaches drooling for this job. UNT just did what they always do and chose the least expensive option.

  45. Are we mistaken? What about Fraschilla, Kaspar, or Scott Cross, who we didn't even contact?

  46. Whether it was him or not, I think Apogee Stadium and the Heart of Dallas Bowl probably got RV five years where BOR won't even think of replacing him.

  47. Side note to this topic, remember it was discussed last year that apparently Dajon wanted to go to UT and they blew him off. If that's true, and he ends up being our starter...when you talk about a chip on the shoulder, having a really talented QB with a huge reason to beat somebody...just might be the edge. Guess we won't know until August, but it's notable enough to point out.
