Regardless of your views of Benny , I hope everyone makes it out to the Tulsa game. I'd really hate for Guys like Alzee & Bwalt's last memories of the Super Pit to be playing in front of a few hundred fans8 points

If RV knows what's good for this program, he will get rid of Benford now! I consider myself a die-hard North Texas fan and used to follow every game, but I have only watched/followed 2 games this year (the only ones on TV here in Austin). If it weren't for those, I would have not seen any. I'm watching the UTEP game as I'm writing this and glad that I have been drinking all day or else I would be even more miserable. It's just sad to see us piss away all that we've built. Unfortunately, we are going to have to start all over because we let Benford have another year. I would like to apologize to the players on behalf of the North Texas Athletic Dept. They didn't deserve this, but our AD let this happen.4 points

Ryan, you can't continue to be an ass and expect it to be covered with, "your sarcasm detector is broken."4 points

Get off Benfords balls for a second and actually realize that he is the root of the problem.4 points

Surprised no one else started this. North Texas’ Dan McCarney receives new 5-year deal thru 2018, sources told @ESPN — Brett McMurphy (@McMurphyESPN) March 3, 20143 points

Bought season tickets (which I still don't know why) but haven't been to a game yet this season. I just haven't been able to justify driving to Denton and watching this team where as before I would do whatever it took to make time and go see a game. May attend the last game to bid farewell to the Sr's who deserve it if work lets me.3 points

Finally I am proud that I can say..... After all these years, I am now a season ticket holder!3 points

I just found out that there may be more NT fans at the GMG.COM game than were at the NT-UTEP game. Beat Texas GO MEAN GREEN3 points

Who cares? Put me in the group who's more concerned about getting beat by 20 at home to a conference opponent who's currently in 5th place. But, according to the basketball experts on this board I shouldn't be concerned because we have a better record than last year and that's progress!!!3 points

Part of New Mexico was actually part of the Republic of Texas and so Texas should get first claim before Mexico.3 points

Harry, what really scares me is what happens when this year's juniors graduate after next season. When you look at the roster, after this year's juniors the bench is very empty. Benford's fourth year (15-16 season), assuming he gets one, looks very questionable as we have had very little success recruiting high school players and getting them to stay with the program.3 points

I agree. This is great news. I too hope that our assistant coaches will be among the highest paid in C-USA.2 points

The highest average attendance for men's basketball was 4,000 in J.J.'s last year, and has dropped to 2,500 in 2014.[numbers close enough for government work] I believe T.B. was a bad hire, and we should cut our loses. Having said that, if 1/3 of attendance is students, that gives you a paying fan base of about 1,700 or so. Not exactly a strong base, either in numbers or dollars. I don't know where the money would come from for a buy out nor to hire an experienced coach. In addition, we are losing money on the sport, and I don't see why anyone we would want would want us nor be affordable. Bottom line: we are an ugly eagle.2 points

Yeah, they are douche bags. They are from or have an affiliation with El Paso for crying out loud. The place is falling apart and is being overrun.2 points

I can't believe I never made the top 5 (or even 10) of posters most likely to derail a thread. I mean, what else are some of us to do whenever the obligatory uniform or helmet sticker threads come back from the grave.2 points

Alzee is the last dude that has been on a NCAA Tournament team at North Texas. Kind of a changing of the guard moment for me. I feel like I watched those teams grow up with each other. After Walton and Alzee leave, only 2 players (CJ and JW) will be left over Jones guys, and if memory serves, the only 2 on the team that have been here since their freshmen year.2 points

Sometimes coaches sub out people who are doing better bc they don't always want to take out a kid for a bad play. Some players have fragile mental make up. It happens more than you think.2 points

Possible big party on Friday, November 28th, at the Westin Riverwalk for the pre-UTSA football game party and river lighting river parade viewing at the same time. The river will be looking great with all the Christmas lights hanging down from the trees for the event. Thanksgiving weekend too! More on this later as I get the OK for things. Question: how many will like to have a party the night prior to the game. They are questioning me about numbers. The room we looked at will have room to seat about 130 or so. We will be on the second floor with all the balconies for viewing the parade/ river. What do you think the attendance will be on that weekend for the game/party? Need a band? Dancing? I have wiggle room on some things being its only March.2 points

There is no such thing as normal substitution patterns. Define it with facts. You can't. Laughable. Substitution patterns, we are talking about substitution patterns? Ridiculous. They aren't the reason we are struggling. They never have been the cause of loss nor do they make Benford a bad coach. There are other things this team does that points to his struggles as a coach. Not one of them is substitution patterns.2 points

Benford doesn't shoot 16/66, but he teaches technique and footwork and our bigs have neither. If Coleman had a coach to coach him up he'd be able to handle his own. There is not an identity on offense. And my money is on why we shoot 16/66. I've seen better team organized basketball during intramural. If a fan of another school asked you what kind of scheme does North Texas run what would or could you say? If people don't think this is coaching they are sorely mistaken.2 points

Yes our big men are concerning. Coleman hasn't produced like many thought he would this year. We ran a motion offense. Have been all year. We play zone because we struggle with on the ball man D and penetration kills us. The zone is trying to mask those deficiencies. What's wrong with reminders. He is telling them to blockout bc of previous games. So you think that he recruited poor shooters on purpose? UTEP had something to do with that shooting performance too. Somedays the ball just doesn't go in. I think we have more shooters this year than we did last year. I'm not a Benford advocate.1 point

We went man because they MADE us go man, Andrew! Did you miss the first 5 minutes of the game? I swear, your basketball knowledge could fit in a thimble.1 point

What has given you any indication that Benford can coach big men? Don't you think lack of an offensive system leads to less open shots, which leads to a worse shooting percentage? What exactly are we trying to do on offense? Anyone know? I couldn't tell you from today's game. We tried to play zone against UTEP and were ripped to shreds. Why? Coaching. UTEP'S offensive spacing and big man high low game against that 2-3 we ran out in the first half was precision perfect. Of course, our terrible rotation and defensive confusion helped them out quite a bit. Meanwhile, our guys get nuggets of wisdom like "box out" when UTEP lines up for free throws. But it's not coaching. Not at all. Also, if you are foolish enough to think that it is the players fault for not being able to shoot, then whose fault is it for recruiting such players to campus? Remember, many who contributed to this terrible shooting percentage today are Benford's recruits, so...1 point

I don't support what Benford has done. He has been a failure so far. That being said I don't agree with some of the things you people come up with to bash him on. No basketball knowledge is just as frustrating as this basketball team.1 point

And again with the justifying our loss by hyping up the other team. I'm glad you can always spew this after we lose to good teams, because that's what'll continue to happen while Benford is here. Sure, we'll win some games against bottom-rung and some middle-of-the-pack CUSA teams, but lose to every team worth a darn. At least next year. In 2015-2016, after our 7 current juniors leave, who knows who we'll be able to beat with a roster made up completely of Benford signees. Likely at least half of which will be signed after the early signing period.1 point

Cue Andrew and the "Benford can't do EVERYTHING" posts, followed closely by "All we have to do is make a run in the conference tournament based on my wild-ass conjecture"1 point

Remember that time when we were good at basketball. When we went to the dance. When people were talking about us. When before last season we were talking top 25 caliber. Yeah, seems like ages ago.1 point

Oh, I'm here. Fels like a UTEP home game. Why didn't you grab that pass? :-) I did here Benfird impart his coaching wisdom by yelling "box out" when UTEP was lining up for a free throw. Kinda like I do with the 3rd and 4th graders I coach....1 point

Quick notes, no links to late: * Kerry calls this a brazen act of military aggression, a 19th century act in the 21st century, very serious consequences, all options are on the table. * Hague (UK ForSec) calls this an invasion and an unacceptable act, he is flying out to Kiev today to recognize the govt and put himself in harms way. * The Ukrainian govt is calling this an act of war, has called up reservist units. * Ukrainian military is on war footing, this has caused the Russians to not move around the country unimpeded as much, but has led to more direct confrontation between Russian/Ukrainian troops. * Ukrainian naval troops are armed and at the walls of their base, surrounded by Russian black sea troopers. * Ukrainian marines are also surrounded in their base, and consider themselves to be under a military siege. A quick note to SE-66. Every American enjoyed incredible economic benefits from the fact there is huge demand for it as the de facto reserve currency. This didn't happen by accident or divine will, and it can all change. American military might led directly to the Bretton Woods system, and since Nixon took us off the gold standard, only American military might and the worlds willingness to trust in it, had kept it that way. Why do you think China is taking the USD we pay them, converting it to RMB and then giving it away free or at very low cost to African, Asian and South American countries? Because they are trying to undermine the USD and want to build trust in the RMB. Russia would love the ruble to become the currency of trade throughout eastern euro. I am not saying we have to go to war, but not reacting strongly to outright provocations to this is exactly the sort of thing that undermines confidence in the US and the USD. There is a reason Ukraine is calling on us for help, there is a reason Poland and Lithuania contacted the UN and the US with concerns about their sovereignty today. We are the world leader of the west, if we don't act like it, we will lose the role.1 point

no .... .. You are so wrong on everything... Desert Storm under Bush I (GOP) made perfect sense even at the time .. Invading Iraq with Bush II (who somehow avoided Nam unlike Kerry and Gore but was willing to send others into a stupid war) that was a terrible mistake (thought so then). WWII was no choice but I wasn't alive in 1941. Nam started ok but most actions after Bay of Tompkin was a mistake (LBJ). should not have expanded it... [ it a was a war like a bad poker hand... we would expand it (up the ante) and then they would too ... and that kept going on..] Reagan was right when he bombed Kadafi and did not invade..... I could care less which party was in power .. a good decision is a good decision. --- All you want to do is argue... with everyone... on everything. However now I do not want the party in power now that started this stupid debt climb while claiming to be conservative (lying) especially with their T-party types wanting more crazy tax cuts and not willing to cut out their meaningless programs . [ look at all the crazy earmarks they funded .. Santorium was the king of that ]1 point
