There is another one ripening on the limb at Desoto right now. Will be ready in two years.3 points

it works both ways. If the ball is coming out in 2 seconds flat because the DBs are sitting 10 yards off the ball, Dline has no chance, not even at NFL standards. In return, Dline has to at least be able to move the QB. You don't always have to sack him or even hit him to be effective. As always, sacks are preferable though.3 points

There is more to it. I would love to have UT, OU and other Big XII teams coming to Apogee every other year. And playing in the Big XII is unquestionably a recruiting boost. And they are guaranteed great media attention throughout the state simply by being a Big XII school, regardless of record. There is a downside to playing in a better conference, but the upsides far outweigh it. Every time.3 points

I think it's really a 3-horse race. I chose Dajon. Partly based on hope. Partly based on where he was on the depth chart at the beginning of last season before his catastrophic injury. McNulty could win, purely based on experience. We know he can run, and handoff like a champ, but do we know if he can even throw the ball? Greer could win, but we don't really know much about him. Consider him the dark horse. Means & Shanbour... redshirt & walkon also-ran.2 points

My brief foray into doctoral level publications was one of seeing peers who despise each other, publicly call each other hacks, work tirelessly to not only discredit each other but also to outright shame and ostracize each other. Outside things like the tobacco industry funding research work a wink and a nod, I do believe there is considerably less group think than people think. That mentality took a huge hit back around 74 when Dupont went knocking on the door of the guy who posited a hole in the ozone over Antarctica.2 points

No doubt on that last sentence. When we look at teams that we want to have as peers (TCU, SMU, UH, etc..), you have to realize that all of them have had the massive luxury of playing in good or great conferences in their history--conferences with major media pull and teams that their fans want to watch. We have never had that--not once in our history. Beyond the SWC/original Big XII Texas schools, TCU had conference games against teams that fans in the Metroplex care about watching IF you are winning. SMU has that same thing going for them currently in basketball. UH has had that same thing going for them in football, too, recently. When we started winning in the JJ years, we finally built the thing up to getting 4000 in the Super Pit for SBC games. SMU starts winning and they are selling out Moody already...why? Because they play UConn, Cincinatti, UH, Temple, Memphis, and others that people want to see. We have never had that luxury--I loved the story about Pat knight finally agreeing to play us in Denton after many attempts by UNT to schedule a home-and-home series that Daddy Knight wouldn't schedule (like Leach, he recognized that losing to UNT was too big of a risk, so they scheduled SMU instead)--he loses that game in OT, which leads to mounting pressure on him that eventually leads to his firing. Same thing happened with Sean Sutton at OSU. Since then, we haven't played a Big XII team at home--and probably won't for years to come if we ever have a good team again, which will be awhile considering our current coach. People always consider football as the end all be all in conference alignment and what that brings, but SMU is a good example of how basketball impacts the bottom line, too, in a very meaningful way. The AAC is a basketball league first, just as the Big East was when they joined it. They didn't join because of basketball, but in the end, because of basketball, their time in the AAC won't be an abject failure, but it will be a huge step forward for a money sport that had died on the Hilltop. That will make them stay higher on the rung than any of us in CUSA. BOth leagues are about the same in football, maybe their top end has more potential to be ranked higher at the end of the season, but the two leagues are fairly similar in potential. But in hoops, its a whole different story--and as we are seeing right now with SMUs sudden resurrection, when you win AND play teams that casual fans have heard of, college hoops shockingly still gets fans attention, no matter how much the Texas media wants to downplay the sport. College hoops does matter big time--and the sooner that the ADs in this region figure that out again, the more their whole budgets will benefit.2 points

I don't know. Last year's DL seemed to benefit from the coverage skillsmof our DB's on many occassions.2 points

I didn't mean it as a slight to JQ or any of the other athletes... It's just where our nation's athletic priorities are. As experienced as JQ is in the industry of athletics, don't believe he'd argue otherwise.2 points

1. Science isn't always right, but it is still right much more often than pseudoscience. 2. Of course there's a human element in science just like in all human areas. Science, however, has some advantages over some of those other fields. Most importantly, science is a very public endeavor - the work is published. It's reviewed by other scientists, published in journals that value their reputation highly, and then that work is open to the critique of other experts in that field. 3. John Kerry is a politician, not a scientist. He doesn't control the grant process in the NIH or the NSF. Grants proposals are reviewed by panels of scientists. These scientists rate the proposal - not John Kerry. 4. As for the peer-review process. Every article submitted to a scientific journal, every proposal submitted to NSF, is reviewed by scientists expert in the relevant field. What would you suggest would be better? To have climate articles reviewed by you, Rick, & Lonnie?2 points

Were we not having the same discussion this time last year except one of out DT's, Abbe, was suspended, and we were not sure of his return? Plus, Boutwell was coming off injuries and our outside LB's were unproven. I trust our coaches to develop the returning players and for them to grab their opportunity and perform to their abilities like last year's group. My one concern is Wallace and his attitude problem and obvious laziness.2 points

I think JQ lands some sweet endorsement deals out of this. He is the smart, nice, aw shuck kind of guy Americans love. Like I said before, he is a natural to be plugging Kool Aid in a month or so.2 points

Trice is fighting his size which is probably 5'7 and his speed. He needs to run a sub 4.5 to get a serious look at being drafted. As a GM it would be hard to justify drafting a special teams player in the 6th or 7th when I can sign him as a free agent2 points

Or regurgitating what I was taught in 7th grade science class. If only you had said science isn't always right, but you just can't get there, can you? ;-) Your refusal to admit that any human element exists in science is quite astonishing. You read the Kerry article. He publicly states that there is no question this is happening and calls any peer reviewed science to the contrary crap. Now, as far as peer review goes, who are the peers reviewing? Have they published like-minded papers in the past? They definitely know what the government EXPECTS from the research, because John Kerry has told them exactly what will and will not be accepted by the government. And who provides grants for scientific research on this topic? To the tune of 18 billion since 2000? The US government. Again, read "Death of Innocents." Besides being a really good read, it gives you insight into just how far some people will go in the name of self-glorification and a government paycheck and how important the "peers" are in peer reviewed science.1 point

Really Rick, the Free Republic? Dude the hullabaloo about a new ice age was precipitated by an article in TIME. Time isn't a scientific journal. TIME isn't peer reviewed. Read the American Meterological Society article I posted for you. Continuing to refer to old canards like, "well, in the 70s the scientists were saying the earth was cooling..." doesn't help your argument. It just makes you seem to be regurgitating silliness you're heard on O'Reilly, Watts-Up-With-That, and in (God help you) the Free Republic. Science isn't always easy to understand. Science doesn't always tell you what you want to hear. Science is, however, our best approximation to reality.1 point

Agree. Probably would have. Ice age, 70s. Overpopulation hysteria, 70s again. No surprise that most overpopulation hysterics always lived in cramped, big cities. They should take a car ride from Fort Worth to El Paso. Hell...Fort Worth to San Diego, for that matter. I'm waiting for the overpopulation alarmist from Pecos, Texas. Anyway, there is always some environmental apocalypse being sold. In the 21st Century, there are many more ways to sell it as well, given the exponential increase in media outlets and methods since the 70s. And, in the 20th Century, taxpayer money was thrown in to underwrite the various hysterias; gotta hide those "bad" research results that jeopardize the same. It is what it is. And, it buys Al Gore many happy endings.1 point

I honestly believe Benford can get it done. Sadly he has not shown this yet. He may be gone next year or the year after but I think if he gets a second chance as a head coach somewhere else he might surprise some of us. He is not as terrible as people make him out to be. He does have some odd subbing patterns but compared to last year he has grown a lot. He does nothing different on the bench during a game then any other coach. It has also been said that his practices are no different then JJs or any other college like George Mason. He can also recruit and is well liked across the nation. There is just someone not clicking. It may very well be his subbing patterns. That is on him. Everything else matches up with other coaches. He is knowledge as well. I guess it's motivation but I do not get what people want. Last year when he pulled them after one mistake they jumped on him. So they do not want him to motivate them to play better by sitting on the bench after a mistake, yet they want him to motivate his players. ODU coached ripped one of his players on the bench twice when we played them. Is he a bad coach? Should Benford do this more, because when he did last year they jumped all over him. When ODU or the MUTS coaches do it they are good coaches... When Benford does it he is clueless or hurting a players moral. It's confusing to me.1 point

Hmm not what I heard but I guess it could be true. It did not seem like that many but maybe since they were with adults it seemed mixed. There was a solid crowd across from me where the benches are located. The students were to my right in one section or two. And then at the top. Either way let's just keep 3k attendance. The kids were loud though. It was a great atmosphere to watch a game. It was very very loud.1 point

If we can go out and win these three road games we have a chance to get a bye. This will be a big 3 game road trip. Each game is very winnable. It does not salvage the season but it could help us in El Paso.1 point

Yes I was just hoping there was still a chance we can get a bye. So many winnable games have passed. What a disappointment. Hopefully we come back home in two weeks on a 4 game win streak...1 point

They had it in last games program. He and Jordan were at like 22 and 24 something like that. What surprised me was that Alzee played 115 guys but the guy sitting at 20th in scoring only played like 51. And it was a time with no three pointers. Maybe teams are to deep nowadays or maybe teams are way more physical. I am unsure. A lot of guys they are passing had just as many points in less then half the games. I found that interesting. That or maybe we were good in the 60s.... I was not around then.1 point
-
Agreed. I was hoping we would beat ODU and start a 5 game win streak. Hopes dashed... Let's just remember anything can happen in the tournament. If we win it and make the tournament I would be relatively pleased.1 point
